Staying at HGVC at Hilton Hawaiian Village and used this location for delivery. Easy to order online and set up a delivery time without issue. Pleasant fellow delivered the items and informed me that there were several substitutions......usually not an issue as I frequently use grocery delivery. The problems: ordered 'chewy' chocolate chip cookies and received 'crispy' cookies Ordered 1 lb of cooked shrimp that were on special and received less than 1/2 lb with a small cup of cocktail sauce!! Poor customer service today. We bought 12 items and stood in line for the 15 items or less. That line was longer than line 10. So we went to that lane. We bought cold and bakery items and had a cold bag and a regular bag. The nagger tried to fit all items in one and asked the cashier if he should do that. She said, "sure, why not." The bagged stuffed my cold bag and gave us back the other. Both made the same mistake: you should have asked us, the customer. I would have directed them to put cold items in the cold bag and bakery (soft) items in the other. They never even asked for help to the car like they normally do. Also, they asked the woman in front of us is she played the Monopoly, she said no. I'm not sure what the cashier did with her game pieces. Shame! read more

I guess I would say that I am moreso rating the ease of finding my groceries, purchasing them, and then leaving. As I entered, I needed to find where the pasta aisle, which was Aisle 12. I need to get some alfredo sauce for our chicken alfredo dinner. Then I went to the friderators between the bakery and pharmacy area because I needed some milk for the house. Lastly, I went to the bakery area to get some garlic bread for tonights dinner. We could not forgot one thing though..dessert! We walked through the cold frozen aisle and originally wanted to get some melona bars, but they did not have any :( We settled with some ice cream sandwich bars instead. As we left the aisle, we got into the line for the self check-out. We waited for under 10 minutes and then we were able to check out our items. They had a new self check-out system, which was interesting. I understand that $5 Fridays can get busy and that the employees may get a little stressed out and under pressure if there are long lines of customers wanting things. This review is about the deli-counter clerks at the Kapahulu Safeway. There were two people ahead of me in line at the deli-counter, so after waiting patiently for about 15 minutes it was my turn. I ask the male clerk for the $5 sub sandwich on sale, he looks at me and flatly says "We are sold out" "We don't have any of the ingredients" with no emotion. So I ask him "How many did you make today"? Before he can answer me the other female clerk pipes in and says "We get the bread from the bakery", "We probably made around 100", "You can always call" she says with a snotty attitude. So I look at the male clerk and tell him "Ridiculous"!!! and walk away shaking my head in disgust. So this is how Safeway management trains their employees in customer service?! So you ran out of the ingredients to make the sub sandwiches, ok I suppose that could happen if whoever was in charge of ordering the supplies wasn't sleeping or busy checking their cell phone instead. I also suppose it is expecting way too much to post a sign somewhere telling customers that the $5 sub sandwich that is advertised is "Sold Out". Oh wait, they can't do that coz that defeats the lost leader effect of falsely advertising products for cheap prices to lure the customers into the store so they will buy other stuff not on sale at full price. Kapahulu Safeway is magical. The parking is plentiful, tip- park upstairs... it's faster! And it has almost everything you need. Now, like any grocery store- go for the deals! Otherwise things can be pricey. The best and worst day to shop on is Friday- $5 Friday where they have weekly deals! The only downfall to the Safeway is the producer is quite expensive.. even on sale, you can find more reasonable deals elsewhere. But, if you're in a pickle.. I recently and needed one avocado, this is the place to go- they have such a wild variety This is a much better place to shop and get ice cream on sale. I recently went to whole foods and none of their ice cream was on sale. (Priorities...) Bring your own bed to Safeway and save $.15 too! Go reusable :) read more

Nicest one so far in Honolulu! Came here for some goodness after guilty pleasure at Leonards Bakery, just a block away but seemed like eternity in this humidity. Loved the seating area when feeding (bottle of course) the princess....long bench wall seating behind the self-checkout. And a major private eating area on far left by the washrooms, away fr the shopping area. Produce on right side, obviously with more local fruits like guava. Horrible service at the Meat/Poke department. Got ignored for 10 minutes, I called the store to ask if the meat department is open-because I was being ignored. I called the store to see if the meat department was closed, the guy that ignored received the call and must have said he was closed because the store clerk said to me it was closed. So I continue to go shopping and about 5-7 minutes later I see a person being served. So I ended up standing line and got my poke. I made a suggestion to at least have a closed sign with time but the person said it wasn't allowed. Anyways I reported it to manager on duty because this happens to often(being ignored). The manager on duty seemed every sincere and I hope she train their employees better on customer service. read more

To be honest I hate the parking lot here. If you hate fighting for a parking space, go straight up the parking ramp next to AT&T and go park upstairs. Lots of parking spaces up there even during prime time shopping hours. You just have to deal with the super slow - double door elevator. Love their deli & bakery section. Enjoy browsing through the cheese section. Hate the fact that everything is always sold out when they have specials going on. Never available. Watch out for the prices. She has a'ole aloha, arrogant, condescending, and attitude for days. I wonder why they keep her? Today I finally complained to Customer Service. The nice Asian lady said 'I always get complaints about Keisha. I feel so bad for you guys having to deal with her. I don't know what's wrong with her. I got hung up so rudely after asking if they have certain items in-stock... before that, I got transferred to Floral Department twice and I'm asking for food item. I have encountered some irate cashiers here. Seriously, if you can't smile and complain about another customer in different dialect, then I think you shouldn't be working in a customer service. At least hold your tongue until no customers are around if you are going to complain about them. Wish I could give this Pharmacy zero stars, or fewer. They've always been a hassle, but tonight takes the cake. Tonight I was told I have to show a state ID to pick up meds I need for my health. What BS. This policy better be in writing when I return because that's how I rolled as a military officer, show me in writing. Otherwise, you're just making it up. MDs have been sending my scripts to this pharmacy for years and for years I've been using my Federal ID to pickup my meds. But tonight, my Federal ID is not good enough. A United States Federal Government Department of Defense (DOD) military photo identification card is not good enough for this almighty Safeway Kapahulu pharmacy and their ignorant staff. Odd, it's good enough for TSA and air travel after Real ID goes into effect. That's a national security issue. This is a health matter. This is not about Oxycodone, or Class A controlled substances, this is about blood pressure and sleep meds I need for my health. My military ID is good enough for Tripler pharmacies, but TAMC is not convenient. Guess I'll check other nearby pharmacies to see what their ID requirements are before transferring my prescriptions to another pharmacy. Why a state ID? Could it be the Federal ID has no address but the addresses on state IDs are often linked to personal credit card info and other financial accounts. If you pay by credit card, which I don't, the pharmacy clerk can take your name, address, date of birth, and all your credit card info and sell it on the dark net. Think about it. Walgreens is closer than Safeway. Longs is even closer, but the line is always so LONG. But maybe that's because they're better? Maybe there's a local pharmacy to patronize. Money spent at Safeway leaves Hawai'i. Longs and Walgreens, too. Buy local. Lastly, I find I don't need any of the other products sold in the Safeway Kapahulu store. The store is organized I'll give them that, maybe one or two of the staff is friendly, but it seems there only "FRIENDLY" to those who they want to be friendly too. When we checked out today there were 2 haole guys in front of us, and the women behind the register (could not stop talking to them) she took her time ringing them up. When it was our turn, she didn't say one word, was it because we weren't haole? I don't know! Then someone behind us puts her groceries on the belt, of course she's haole and the women behind the register starts interacting with her, Mind you we are still at the register and she's bagging our items as shitty as she could, putting the bread with heavy items and not double bagging any of our heavy heavy items. She's completely ignoring us! I want to clarify that I am NOT racist! I have nothing against haole people but apparently she didn't like us or respect us enough to acknowledge us, AND that she was a manager or supervisor or whatever and her name was pandora. For years (ok .. decades) I shopped at the Foodland-Times-Star Market (I miss Star!) troika of Honolulu supermarkets. Safeway? Not so much. The other stores felt better, so be it. But now I'm fan of Safeway Kapahulu. What happened? Was there a lightning strike? Did aliens land in Palolo Valley and hypnotize me? (That happens now and then). No, I think it's simpler than that. Here's what I like about the store. Parking! Omg. Yes, the store front lot is often a mess, but I go to the second level and almost always find a space by the elevator.The distance from car to store is less than if I parked in the crowded lot below. This is great! Store interior: Omg2. It's big and roomy and clean and brand new. The aisles are wideeeee! The roomy store takes all the stress out of shopping. Grocery selection: Even before Safeway built their larger stores, the company always provided a more extensive line of products than their competition. Now the selection is just amazing .. (for Hawaii). Their fresh produce departments are twice as large as their competition. And I would say their organic produce selection is as great if not greater than the local health food stores. There's also a special "Made in Hawaii" aisle. Their meat selection is equally extensive (sorry, vegy people, skip to the next paragraph). You will find many different cuts of meats and specialty products. Seafood? Foodland is still the champ, but Safeway is ok. If you're into cheese or yogurts (vegans and lactose intolerants, look away), this is the store for you. For some strange reason (perhaps it's because of those damn alien invaders in Palolo) cheese is my comfort food. So I am into heaven here. They have two cheese departments .. one dedicated to specialty products. SERVICE: More helpful than many grocery stores. On several occasions stock clerks have interrupted their work to ask if they could help me find an item, and rather than tell me go to such and such an aisle, they led me directly to the item I wanted. All without being asked! I appreciate this, because I hate wasting my time wandering up and down store aisles, and as people who know me will attest, I can't follow directions anyway. What else? There's much more there than I can to squeeze into this review. There's a huge bakery and deli plus a little kitchen that offers plate lunches. A nut department (sorry, this nut is not for sale). Starbucks. A mini post office that sells stamps and has package pick up. A Bank of Hawaii. A large wine and liquor selection. (Glenlevit, Lagavulin Scotch? Yep). Plus an extensive selection of the usual groceries. Ok the negatives (actually I'd call them the less the positives). PRICE. If you shop at Safeway more than a few times a year, you MUST get a Safeway card. Without the card you'll pay 20% more on most products. (Tip: if you forget your card, type in your phone number. If you forget your number, text a friend and have her call you .. that's what I do) But even with the card, their regular prices are higher than other stores. This is the price you pay for the wide aisles and the large product selection. There's no free lunch, especially at Safeway. On the other hand you can overcome some of the higher cost by watching for their in store specials, which are extensive. You can save a lot of money on their "2 for 1" and "50% off if you buy 2" deals on groceries. They're doing a mini-Costco thing here by giving you a price break when you buy in larger quantities. AUTOMATIC CHECKOUT SUCKS: Yes, I know this is the wave of the future and I'm coming to terms with it. But this system often goes berserk. The plastic bags get stuck together. Once I was trying to separate the bags and the damn robot kept saying "Please bag the next item" over and over. I wanted to punch the thing out. So get all your bags ready BEFORE you begin.. that way you won't punch out the machine. Better yet, bring your own bag and help save the planet. The machine will read clear bar codes, but it couldn't (or wouldn't) decipher the code on my potato salad. "Please scan the next item" it kept saying even while I was scanning like mad. I wanted to throw the potato salad at the machine, but I couldn't because that was my lunch. I haven't tried vegetables yet. Scared to, lol. My peeve is that the store keeps their check-out lines a little long in order to encourage people to self-check out. I've got no problem with this if the system wasn't so frustrating to use. Unless I am buying something simple like cat food, I don't even try to use it. It's to Safeway's advantage to fix this. I hope they do. SUMMARY: I don't mind paying a little extra for a nice shopping environment and the large selection of products. (I don't eat much anyway). I hate the self check-out. (You've been warned). read more

I am a regular shopper here. Our regular shopping lists: San Francisco style sourdough bread! Avocados, Bananas, OJ, Jarritos soda, Tortillas and Pete's coffee. You can basically get everything here, large wine selection, and the Deli is not bad at all. After Star Market - Mina Pharmacy is gone, Safeway is a good choice for picking up meds too. Don't forget a punch card if you are a regular. buying meds x5 = $5 money card. next meds x5 = $10. next x5=$15. it is for each visits even when you spend $300 or $7. Tip: A view from the 2nd floor parking lot is pretty. Tip: Check your receipt while you are still in the store. I had found some mistakeS in the past. Sushi is better than Whole Food. Somehow they know how to make rice better. Not the best, but for the price, no complaint. read more

We didn't make it much past the front door but I can still rave about this Safeway... * They have a Starbucks with great service where we got (4) beverages for less than $10 * They have a stuffed animal claw video game machine with cute stuffed animals where we got one small stuffed turtle for about $12 in attempts. We also got about 20 pieces of candy/small toys though because everyone is guaranteed a winner! If you do not pick up a stuffed animal with the claw, you keep trying until you pick up a piece of candy in a separate section of the machine! At least our $12 got us lots of fun entertainment and the candy in addition to the small stuffed turtle...! I also heard that they give a free cookies to all children that I come in which I think is true of most of the Safeway's :) read more

Whether you find yourself at the beach in a picnic-less panic, or in town going to the beach for a picnic, this place could prove to be your one stop shop! With Safeway the variety and price make it awesome. This place has almost never failed to accommodate all of my grocery shopping needs. From their wide variety cheeses and other wine pairing appetizers to specific ingredients needed in preparing exotic cuisine. i almost always find everything i need at Safeway. A few specific things this store offers: 1. 24 hour wi-fi section, furnished, in case starbucks further down kapahulu is packed, and you like being surrounded by groceries and odd people late at night instead of ordinary bags of coffee. 2. An in-store Starbucks kiosk, in case being around odd people doesn't keep you awake enough. 3. In-store self serve counter that offers exotic westernized Chinese and Mexican type cuisines 4. Fresh poke. 5.. Many types of meat that claim to be organic. Organic turkey bacon, organic chicken breast, organic hamburger. ORGANIC! 6. Two levels of parking so you don't have to be one of those lazy people that wait and hold up traffic because your too lazy to ride the elevator down from the upper parking lot. 7. This is one of my favorite chain grocery stores in Honolulu! The selection of groceries, ready-made foods, and beverages is hard to beat! My only complaint is the high prices of items that would otherwise be reasonable; it's hard to tell if that's due to the location or brand name. Regardless, this is one of my favorite places to get groceries or dinner. Parking can sometimes be difficult, but just waiting a minute usually reveals a spot (there is also more available on the roof). The store is big and welcoming. Specials, hot foods, and soups are right at the door. The hot food bar, both for ordering and pre-made, is to your left, with the cheese counter and other delicious items. The beer section is straight ahead, needless to say, this is one of my favorite aisles. They have good prices (better elsewhere when buying in bulk), but you have the benefit of being able to try more varieties. They also have lots of seasonal brews that are hard to find in other stores. The poke counter at the back of the store is definitely a hidden gem that I never knew about. You must get here early, as rice is a precious commodity. Prices are excellent for the sheer volume and quality of fish. All the staples and packaged foods are in the middle of the store. Excellent produce and dairy rounds out our trip. They also have an amazing wine selection and bakery, although I don't buy much of either personally. Make sure to use your Safeway card for gas points and discounts. read more

I ordered three platters for a party I was having; sandwiches, fruits, and vegetables. When I went to pick them up, I was shocked. First, the sizes were all wrong. Whoever took my order did not pay close attention, and stuck me with too much of some stuff, and not enough of others. I brought this up to the manager, who changed the prices and apologized profusely. When I got to the checkout line, I saw what I was paying for (they had been handed to me in a stack). The veggie and fruit platters were covered in garnish lettuce, to the point where it looked like there were maybe twenty pieces of fruit or vegetables. The sandwich tray was on the bottom, and certain sandwiches were completely dismantled and just stuck together with toothpicks, others had bread that was ripped in half and just haphazardly thrown back together. There was also no lettuce or anything to try and make this look like it was worth the $50 it cost, but I had guests coming in an hour and had to give them something. When I got home I had to reassemble the sandwiches and throw out several with no meat included, only one piece of bread, or no filling at all...who put these together? Then I removed some of the extraneous lettuce from the veggie tray, only to find several tomatoes were already covered in white mold, and the cap to the bottle of ranch dressing that they had used to fill up the dipping cup made its way ONTO the tray,hidden in the lettuce. Are you kidding? I paid $150 for these, when I should have just served pb&j and canned fruit. I threw all of it out and just ordered pizza. This was reprehensible and it makes me reconsider buying anything that is prepared "in store." read more

Let's get to the "it" factor of this establishment.... you can get cash back with ATM purchases. I have been here several times to purchase groceries just so I could do just that! Next- the world's greatest cashew assortment that I have ever seen. I have had cashews from all of the world, most notably from Thailand.... and these cashews were EVERYTHING. When you visit this Safeway if not for anything else... get the "Furikake Cashews". I am not quite sure what form of LSD they laced these cashews with to cause me to become addicted... but I am love with these babies. The bakery...a fat girls paradise. If you have no sense of calorie intake, haven't seen your ankles in a few years, and/or start your diet on Monday... come to the bakery section for the largest cupcakes I have ever seen in my life. My pants got tighter just looking at them. Unfortunately, I did not divulge because I am saving all my weekend calorie points for Leonard's :/ So I spent $60 in this grocery store... and walked out with one bag, loll. Hey, I have lived in NYC for the last 6 years... the kingdom of EXPENSIVE GROCERIES. $60 in New York will get you a can of soup... maybe... hmmm, loll. Updated from March (I didn't realize it didn't post and was in my draft section for a long time): I love the poke here! So filling and the seafood clerks were so nice!! I HIGHLY recommend getting poke here, especially around 5pm, when they are getting ready to shut down the seafood area. Sometimes you can get lucky and get HEAPS of poke in your poke bowl. YUM! This place is so clean and I love Aloha Friday sales! Even the Safeway brands are not bad. I highly recommend the strong brand (the picture of the Swan) toilet paper that is only $5 on Aloha Fridays (not sure if it's every Friday)! And the $5 Lumberjack subs are HUGE! But my favorite is the $5 8 Piece Fried Chicken deal on Aloha Fridays! Or 2 for $5 Beyer Ice Creams that they sometimes have. There are so many great deals. It may not be the cheapest grocery store, but you can find great deals and everything seems fresh! One time it was the end of the month on the Sunday and all of the chicken packs were only $5, which are normally $10-13!!! We really got lucky that day! The only thing con about this Safeway is that it can have pretty long lines, but they seem to go by pretty quickly. Especially, in the self check out! I absolutely LOVE the new Safeway over on Kapahulu! I used to think that the one on Maui in Kihei was good, but this one is definitely the bomb! I especially LOVE their salad bar. They have a great selection of fresh leafy greens as well as all of the toppings to go with it. Juicy plump olives, thick mushrooms and even soybeans!! One of my favorites!! Plus I like the fact that it all goes by weight, so I don't have to end up with such a hefty salad on the days I want something really light. They also have their tasty sandwiches they make on the spot as well as some hot lunches you can select on the run. Definitely a great spot to pick up lunch on the go!! OK if Safeway put a 1,000,000 HP engine in it, it would be this Safeway. DANG this thing is HUGE! Plus, seriously, it has a NUT BAR, yeah, you heard me, a nut bar. All kinds of nuts in a display that you can buy by the pound. I was IMPRESSED. I really want to spend some time there next time and really check this place out. It really had the hugest produce area ever and the aisles were clean, cool, and do I dare say, Trendy? I like this Safeway because it's big, bright and beautiful. The produce section looks so beautiful and spacious. I can get all of my groceries here including my $3 shitty avocados, arugula and taro leaves. It's seriously one of the larger supermarkets in the area, so if you're ever looking for something unique like canned chipotle peppers or locally made salts and sauces, you should try here before times or foodland. Although Foodland is always named honolulu's best poke bowl, Safeway has the same set up. I like their spicy ahi, garlic ahi and wasabi ahi pokes. Soooo yummy and different from foodland's offerings. I like that this location is in a little shopping area. You can pick up dinner from ninja, Panda Express or good to grill if you want something fast along with your groceries. I also like that there is a Starbucks inside, so I can conveniently get my caffeine fix while shopping. The parking lot can get crowded, but there's additional parking on the roof. read more

As a rule, I always shop at Safeway. However, when deciding WHICH Safeway to go to, I like the Kapahulu location because its newer, larger and has plenty of roof top parking. This one has all the bells and whistles too - deli, bakery, pharmacy, Starbucks, etc. Can't go wrong with this location. Only thing you might have trouble with is getting there, due to construction on Kapahulu. read more

I like the convenience of phone refills, the fact that that they have medications other, bigger pharmacies generally don't carry, and have adequate hours of service. On the downside, Safeway pharmacy is highly inefficient. The line is often short at the times I am often able to make it (evenings after work); however, the wait is extensive. Their system requires signatures in different places (two separate digital screens), they only have a pharmacist and a clerk working, and if one is servicing a customer, the other stands by watching. The parking is terrible at the time I usually go, so picking up a prescription without needing groceries can be quite a hassle. I've called prescriptions in to their automated phone system, only to make he trip to pick up the prescription after more than 48 hours, and still have to wait because it isn't ready. If you are able to get your prescription from a more efficient pharmacy, I'd highly recommend it. read more
