This Safeway used to be fine, but recently added a terrible second checkout to get some basic items. The cashiers in the secondary checkout were incredibly slow and added an extra 10 minutes for me to grab some deodorant. Then I nearly rescanned the deodorant at the second checkout. I understand security for stolen items, but why not create more jobs by hiring someone to monitor the aisle rather than building new walls and registers to make the process of shopping more confusing and time consuming. read more

THIS IS A RACIST STORE. I am a racially ambiguous person, but I am perceived as dominantly African American. There has been a recent increase in low-income minorities within the area and stealing has gotten worse here. Thats another issue in itself, but the security at this Safeway has decided to take a lazy solution for this, which has resulted in profiling to the highest degree. I am halted and denied entry unless I remove personal items and leave them with "security" at the side of the main entrance door, next to where everyone has to walk, since this is the only entrance... This is 24/7 while they are open. Being a student, I carry my most valuable possessions I own with me to attend class. Already I am concerned with how safe my stuff could be left here. If you go into the store, you will see a multitude of mainly white women carrying bags similar or bigger than mine in the store at the same time. Why did they not have to take theirs off? When I directly asked the security of this, I was shooed off with "I guess they just slipped right past me." It is not just one or two, there will be a handful of people with bags, all following similar descriptions that would imply that they are targeting certain people they take their bags from. (This is also the only Safeway I have ever been to that has security make people remove items before entry). Other times while dealing with, in particular, a handful of employees who work the self-checkout. There are specific instances that I have in mind, that when I have been blatantly disrespected by other customers, I attempted to have the employee at least correct the foul play (One example is someone walking right in front of me to take a register as I'm putting my stuff down to use it). Being a male of my color, it is not my place to make a commotion about these sorts of things because very rarely go in my favor without the assistance of non-colored people opinions. To my surprise, the employees just look me in the face and tell security on the radio "There's a black male threat in front of me. He won't go back to the end of the line; will someone make sure he leaves." I couldn't do anything but cackle because I was astonished that was their perception of the situation. I understand there can be plenty of misunderstandings, but unfortunately this store has made me a victim to too many of them for it to be considered coincidental anymore. I'm assuming at some point this policy will be reversed, but I'm not going back until then. This Safeway is racist, was trying to buy detergent and was asked to check my bag which I said no because my medication is in my bag and the manager on the weekend told me to shop elsewhere. As a senior with disabilities, I rarely go to this store due to the negative vibes and undue stress. Drug activity and homeless surrounding the outside of the building and being followed around by security guards inside the store, blocking me from putting items in my cart. The place is often mayhem and short of helpful and and checkers. I wrecked my back yesterday because they have a new system in place where the wheels lock on metal floor grids on the way out the doors, forcing me to carry bags a long distance to my car. This is by far one of the worst safe ways I've ever been too. There is a strong odor of urine when you walk in. So strong it burns your nose. I went to get vegetables out of the refrigerator section and it smelt like human feces. The food is way over priced compared to any other Safeway or grocery store near by. There is so much trash outside the store you don't know what you might step on. They must've had a lot of thefts because they now have a guarded section of the store where you buy hygiene products medication and alcohol that you can't even bring a bag into and you have to check out there. In general I would walk or drive to somewhere else. read more

I've been going to this Safeway for around 8 months now, and their COVID "safety" is pretty careless. Almost every time I've gone in here I've seen 4-5 people not wearing masks at all and they do nothing about it. Employees AND management have obviously seen it and they don't care. This has been the case throughout the whole pandemic. Also the self checkout lanes are often times PACKED. In the beginning of the pandemic they separated the lanes so every other self checkout was open, and now they got rid of that and made them all active, making me feel unsafe and exposed to those around me. Safeway-You could at least have people checking at the front door that customers are wearing masks. Shouldn't you care about your customers? Or is it only about making the sale? Im tired of this and today was the last straw. I will be shopping at TJ's now, as they truly show they care about their customers. They limit the amount of customers in their store, require (and check) that customers are wearing masks at the front door (and give to those who might not have one), and they even pay for the bags (although a small gesture it is appreciated). These small things are all what make customers trust your business, and Safeway, you don't do much of that at all. I've only been shopping here because it's closest to my home, but I have realized it's not worth the convenience to support a business that does nothing for a majority of their customers safety and health. read more

I went to the Safeway last night at 9:30, parked my Lexus directly in front of their security window. There was a very aggressive panhandler accosting people trying to enter their store, which is illegal, and why I thought they have security. I just said I was sorry, which I was, and made my way around him. Twenty minutes later I return to my car window being smashed. I ran back into the store, there are three security guards all standing around inside, directly in front of the window where my car was parked. I told them my car window had been smashed. One of the security guards tells me that they watch it happen, the guy ran away, and we have no cameras out there. I ask if they called the police, he said no, it is not our property. Then he remarks about how bad crime it out there - my only repose was "you're not helping". Safeway watched a shopper's car being violently assaulted - a crime in progress - and they don't even call the police. That is the kind of neighbor that would watch your house burn down and not call the fire department. There is no wonder why that neighborhood has gotten so bad, with neighbors like Safeway's "not my property" attitude, who is left to stand up. read more

Not much of a yelper, but I have had so many horrific experiences at this Safeway I wanted to warn others. DO NOT attempt to utilize any of their "speciality departments" (ie cash services, pharmacy). Both times I have been treated less than human and been made to feel that my presence as a customer was absolutely ruining their day. I attempted to pick up a prescription from there and 10 minutes before 1:00 the pharmacist cut me off from line and refused to serve me because they had lunch coming soon. Also attempted to get a money order at 11:30am and they said they wouldn't have anyone in the store with access to money orders until 12:30pm. Manager basically told me I was SOL, but shouldn't managers be able to issue money orders?? I'm a full time student and full time worker so getting around during business hours is really difficult and each and every time, Safeway has inconvenienced me that much more. I will walk the extra 10 minutes to Fred Meter's on Burnside and carry my groceries that far to avoid this Safeway. read more

Horrible customer service and poorly organized departments. Everything that is "on sale", they've run out of. Every morning, no deli department worker seems capable of working the bar until 7am. Next is the fact that when you finally manage to get someone to take your order, they complain to you like it is your own fault for not going elsewhere. The other departments are lacking as well. Self check out is a joke, better to deal with a cranky cashier then the person overseeing the self check out. I asked if they could fill them up for me and I would pay- they charge the same price for helium as if you were buying their balloons in store..... $50 fucking dollars to blow up 6 small balloons and 2 large. Also, you have to go into a special closed-off area to get medicine or alcohol and the specific checkout line takes forever. I used to shop here for the good member prices. There are never deals anymore and the inflated prices are way over exaggerated. Prices here are now comparable to Whole Foods, minus the pleasant shopping experience. I live a block away from this store, have been shopping here for years, and am never going back. You're better off driving to Trader Joe's. Gayle and I noticed this Safeway from the Streetcar during our first evening in Portland. And like almost every place else in Downtown Portland, it was within easy walking distance from our hotel. The store looks nicely remodeled and layed out. Although I was comfortable with the neighbourhood (and the roving security guards), some caution is advised. But I'm not borderline insane, nearly blind, or troubled by my ex-periences as it relates to just a grocery store. This Safeway has a pretty good wine selection and although we had hits and misses for our hotel consumption, we did manage a nice selection for when we went over to my hometown friend's house on Friday night. We also bought snacks and some heat wraps for sore muscles. read more

This Safeway is awful. Not only are the lines always 10+ people long, but the staff is either nonexistent, rude, or uninformed. What ever happened to going to a grocery store looking for an obscure item and the first person you ask can recite the aisle it's in, what it's next to, and on what shelf? These people never know where anything is. That is, if you can find a staff person. They are usually nowhere to be found! I would write more, but I already wrote a letter to Safeway's corporate office about this location, and I am a little worn out. My house was a food ghost town. I must have been busier than I realized because It hasn't been this pathetic since, well, ever. I'm not sure exactly how it happened since I'm never one to go without my hourly meal. My stomach is quite literally a bottomless pit - a food vortex of sorts, and it basically rules my every waking (and sleeping) moment. But no doubt, I was out of food. This morning? I ate dry toast. Not because I'm on some sort of super-crash diet (let's be real people), but because literally, I have NO FOOD. So as my bread was toasting I went on a "fun food scavenger hunt" to figure out something (anything) to put on my toast. It will be fun, right? Kinda like college. Let's see...no peanut butter or butter of any variety, no jam, no cheese, (again, cream or otherwise)... no meat, tuna, veggies, or chocolate, no beans, (I mean, refried black beans on toast? I was getting desperate.) No soup to dip the bread in, no eggs or potatoes to fry on top, all I have is bread. Oh - and tortillas, garlic cloves, and red wine. I have literally scavenged and picked my way through ALL of the food in my home. And now I'm hungry. I'll go to Zupan's, Whole Foods, TJ's, Freddy's or New Seasons when I need a speciality item or just a few extra nibbles, but when I'm talking about buying two full cart loads of "essentials," I go to Safeway. This specific Safeway has a great selection, much lower prices than the aforementioned options, (oh...plus I'm a sucker for those United miles) parking right in front, and helpful staff that will help you unload your 25+ bags of groceries into your hatchback. It's just too bad they wouldn't come home with me to help unload there too. (I bet they would have if there was an empty seat in my car!) read more

Opossums Say "No Thanks!" to Safeway Hamburger Opossums are not known for their epicurean sensitivities, rather they'll eat pretty much anything put in front of them. In graduate school, I temporarily had several in captivity and they would eagerly approach and scarf down whatever I put in their food bowls. There was one exception -- Safeway hamburger. After one or two sniffs, they would give a look of disdain (at least as much as possible for an opossum) and move away. Although I thought this would be a treat for them, they reacted the same way every time I offered the hamburger. Some people are prejudiced against opossums, but they are natural cleaners, removing roadkill and other carrion. And, like the French, they are aficionados of snails (and slugs), so they are the gardener's friend. read more

Yeah people, it's a post-Covid metropolitan downtown area and some of us didn't thrive post Covid; doesn't mean we're criminals! There is always a clear pathway in and out and an evident FRIENDLY security person present. The quality and prices of the food are no different from the Safeways in other "nicer" (read, more affluent!) areas and it's a friendlier experience than many. read more

First off, this is a Safeway, so calm down on the judgement. There is a house less community in Portland. Not all of which are healthy physically or mentally. To appease our capitalist society, Safeway has security dogging anyone who looks "less than". I find the produce to be perfectly acceptable and the store itself has what you need. In comparison to other Safeway locations, this one close to the Portland State University campus is actually more kept in line than others. In fact, despite homeless people at the front entrance begging for money from customers, most of what you want in this location is easy to find despite the high prices. When I was at the Jefferson location getting a bite to eat from the deli, the people running the deli kept asking me if I had a Club Card with me. I said no and the person ringing up my order said if I didn't get myself a Club Card, I would have to stay away from the Jefferson store for who knows how long. The person ringing up my order may have been joking, but it was rude and uncalled for nonetheless. read more

I've shopped at this Safeway on SW Jefferson since 2003 before the high rises went in. The staff has always been helpful and they tried their hardest to comply with recommended Covid protocols. Ever since Compass Security took over, the shopping experience has improved IMMENSELY!! There's no longer any loitering/camping at the store entrances, and the shoplifting has gone down to essentially zero. Before Compass Security took over, literally anyone could walk into this Safeway and take anything, knowing that security guards couldn't even touch them. So, the atmosphere wasn't exactly the greatest back then. :) So, it's quite the joy to be shopping for food, ingredients, etc with other honest shoppers now! :) read more

The management in this place is ridiculous!!! I came in today to shop with my family after Sunday Brunch. Prior to tackling our shopping list, I needed to relieve myself so I could shop comfortably. I approached three employees and each one of them lacked the empowerment to give me a bathroom code so I could pee. Each of them timidly referred me to the customer service desk at the front of the store; keep in mind we already had a partially full grocery cart at this point. I approached the customer service desk where there was a line of customers waiting for other services. I waited patiently only to be told "you need a receipt to prove you're a paying customer before I can give you the code". REALLY?!? Needless to say I was not happy and voiced my frustration as she reluctantly gave me the WRONG CODE! Safeway in downtown Portland on SW Jefferson is a poor reflection of your brand and customer service. This store is clearly riddled with a social problem that is being projected onto your paying customers! I will never step foot in a Safeway grocery store again! Frankly, I've been treated better and given greater customer service in a WALMART store. read more

This Safeway store is really trying to turn things around. They've hired more security folks and they're attempting to cut down on the number of people just hanging around outside. In addition, they've begun to remodel, so there's hope that it will soon be a better place to shop. read more
