This place is more like the Twilight Zone than a grocery store. It's the location. Those beach dwellers are an odd sort. Imagine what it takes, emotionally, to withstand the depression session that is the Ocean Beach region. I mean, 98% of the year, this beach doesn't see a ray of sunshine and the temperature rarely climbs past 50 degrees. Factor in sweeping winds, dense fog, and frequent rain and you see where I'm going with this. These strange people have an excuse, don't get me wrong. On any given day at this Safeway, you may find your fellow shoppers mumbling to themselves, batting at imaginary bugs, or getting in your face and telling you to bite it because you brushed up against them on your way through the produce department. Last time I was there, I was yelled at by a woman with a massive gray mane, dressed in various shades of pink, with bright pink lipstick and a pink cane, because I was "reading the magazines for free when [I] should be paying for them like everyone else". She then asked me how it felt to be stealing money out of the pockets of magazine publishers. I actually bought the US Magazine. I was too afraid not to. I also recently had the distinct and rare pleasure of waiting 19 minutes in the deli, holding a number that apparently meant nothing and waiting for the 7 people behind the counter to help 2 customers. You can imagine how badly I was craving barbecued chickens to have waited so unreasonably long. Then I had to walk the meat technician through every last step of her job. When I asked if she was new to this position, she stared blankly and informed me she's worked there for YEARS. Go figure. At least there's never a line and it's almost as entertaining as the crackhead Safeway in my hood. Two solid points. The selection here is fine - nothing to complain about. So why only 3 stars? The clientele! (Kristina R and hubby excluded, of course). I once had my life threatened in this place while stopping by on my way to a friend's bbq in the neighborhood. We were in a bit of a hurry and walking briskly through the store. I suppose this elderly lady didn't like our pace, for she turned around and yelled at my friend (completely unwarranted): Crazy old lady: "You don't just go walking up on a person like that. It's really rude!" My friend: "Uh....(complete shock and disbelief, utter loss for words) Me (trying to let go of my Jersey and embrace my California): "Oh, I'm so sorry if that's what it seemed like. She certainly meant no offense by it. We are so sorry. We're just in a rush and maybe we were walking too quickly" Crazy old lady (pulling a liter of Sprite out of her basket and waving it at me menacingly): "You get away from me right now or I'll bash your head in. Go away!" Me (completely losing every ounce of California and remembering everything I learned in Jersey) "WHAT??? Are you completely out of your fu...(another friend put her hand over my mouth and pulled me into a checkout aisle - she's lucky she's got a good 8 inches on me!)" We got to my friend's house and told him the story. He laughed and said shit like that always happens there. So go, if you must, but you may want to consider packing heat. read more

Maybe it's because I'm from the suburbs that I can't fully appreciate this Safeway, but all the times I've come here, it's been like Costco before Thanksgiving or Christmas. You can barely maneuver yourself through the crowds, lines are WAY long, except Costco has a better layout. Most Safeways have peanut butter in one of the center aisles, closer to the breakfast foods. This one has it next to the bread. PS- This Safeway is near the Nike Women's Marathon finish line, so it's kind of tempting to park in the lot, because there's no parking elsewhere. Don't do it. You'll get towed. read more

What are pp's problems?? It's a grocery store. They have food that is carefully put on the labeled shelves that have sell by dates and calorie content. It's everything you deserve as a consumer and as much as you should expect for a store with 1-2% margins. Plus it's right on the beach. You need firewood to have a huge bonfire with your friends?! They got it. You want beers to wet your thirsty throat?! They got it! And they have parking...which is an anomaly for the city!!! Went here just a few hours ago to get some hot-cooked wings to munch on while watching the waves break on the beach - didn't even know there was a Safeway here. The attention and service I got from the young man who helped me was excellent, even asked if I wanted to wait for hot fresh wings instead of the ones sitting under the hot lamps. I didn't mind at all. About ten minutes later, with new wings being dished out, he assisted me again; I had asked for a mix of the regular and teraki wings. He suggested I try one of the regular ones because it might be a bit dry (which it was). I don't mind waiting when the service is so polite and good. But later, parked on the Great Highway and munching on those wings, I was kinda upset because the wings were quite COLD. Why use hot lamps when they will be cold? It was so cold that my stomach got upset after eating just five wings!!! The fries were much hotter than the wings and they were only inches away under the same hot lamp. They should determine a method of heating and keeping the hot foods hot as they should be. Am sure if a health inspector came by, the "hot food" counter would be closed down.... I go to a lot of Safeways for hot tidbits to eat for lunch: wings, potato wedges, soups, etc. I've never had a problem with food "hot" foods at the Northpoint, Marina or the off-Geary locations. Let me just start off by reading the reviews for this location, people act like they should be treated like celebrities at Safeway with having lights shining on them as they walk to and from their cars, having personal assistants (or servants?), their favorite songs being played, co-op products being sold there, everything should be in stock every single second, the place needs to be reconstructed into a castle, workers rolling out red carpets as people walk, etc; there should be a 1 STAR for the annoying customers then. Give me an effing break and go to Whole Foods!!!!!!!!!!! First world problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This Safeway if open 24 hours and it is close to the beach!!!! When I get the late-night muchies, have no food, and not in the mood for take-out, I head over here. I have also been to this Safeway pharmacy. The pharmacist and the other pharmacy employees are patient and friendly. Surprisingly, a lot of other people get the late muchies in the outer Richmond. I actually didn't know this Safeway was 24/7! I also like the fact that they have a huge parking spot here so it was never a problem finding a spot. Yes, this is in San Francisco! If you don't like this Safeway you're one of two people 1. You're not from around here and don't understand how San Francisco is. That's OK you'll be gone shortly. 2. It doesn't have the organic selection that TJ's or Whole Foods has. Why should it? It's not a small TJ's or overpriced Whole Foods. If you want that drive there. The homeless complaints are overblown. I don't go there regularly but once a month at least and I'm lucky to see 1 maybe 2 homeless people. There are people who live out here that moved here from somewhere else and don't have the money they need to live here and they start to resemble homeless people quickly because they're spending all their money on top dollar organic, artisanal, homemade stuff and not shopping realistically. This place is always a breeze to shop at on the weekends which is when I usually go there because every other grocery store is packed on the weekends. The parking lot is great. If I need to go shopping at night that's just means I've done bad planning for that day. I honestly would rather spend 5 minutes in line to have 2 items checked out with a slow chatty checker than 30 in line with a fast checker and long lines. You don't have the lines here on weekends during the day. I won't comment on the bathroom because it's a grocery store bathroom. How nice do you expect it to be? I've never even opened the door so I'll just take your word for it. I pee before I leave the house. Bonfire! Totally the place to load up on 30 packs of beer, JD Lynchburg Lemonades & individual bottles of Gallo wine for your evening getting completely wasted on the beach. Anyway, this Safeway has the dirtiest public bathroom I have ever used. EVER. I had to hold my breath or I would've lost my dinner. And who wants to go to the bonfire with vomit breath? The best was when I asked where the bathroom was and the young, african security guard told me that the bathroom was "just for me" and then immediately asked me how old I was. Worst experience I've ever had. I was with my wife and I wanted to order sandwich they made me wait because they said that I was with my wife and that was considered one party! I really don't know how you can have a Safeway on Ocean Beach in San Francisco and have such crappy employees and poor attitudes. I spoke to the manager about the dirty bathrooms and he said they would get to it probably within a half an hour I explained to him that I was discouraged and disappointed by the fact that I had to wait to have my sandwich made by a person who did not speak English. this is a most convenient Safeway to ever exist. The place is 24hrs. and it is close enough to the beach that you can come here, get fire wood and lighter fluid which someone has dubbed "go juice" and go have a good time on the beach. And I have the pleasure of admitting that this place has saved my life; For while on one of my late night bike rides my blood sugar dropped to a deathly level. I rode my bike into the store got my Sobe and proceeded to save my life while some homeless man was throwing up in a corner of the store. I like this safeway, it is abundant. Just an odd thing that happened that also happened at the safeway up on bay st...that I guess shows how it is hard to find good (meaning attentive) workers these days--ie cashiers that are scanning your groceries while looking away, talking to coworkers and otherwise not paying attention. Twice at the two safeways i have had two orders so I put the divider between the two groups of items and inexplicably they just scanned EVERYTHING TOGETHER, so quickly i did not have time to say..."these are two orders that is why i have the dividers between the two groups of items"...and trust me, it is hard to say that without sounding beeyatchy! Another thing at various stores is workers texting at the check/out areas. I had to get an emergency contribution to this pot luck at my work. I wanted something healthy so I bought a tub of hummus, some roasted red peppers, some deli meat slices and olives. It all came to over $30 bucks and when I finally got it to work and started setting it up on the tray, I discovered all the pita breads to be green and moldy. So now what are they going to dip in the hummus? That was the foundation, dammit. Stupid Safeway. Word of warning, check all expiration dates before buying. (not just milk, my mistake I guess. This review is mainly to correct the old reviews about the bathroom. Yes this is a fine Safeway. Standard. Has everything you might need. However, I came here specifically as an Uber driver looking for a bathroom and was surprised. The reviews prepared me for a mess. However that's not what I found. It was as clean as a free unlocked public restroom can be(in my opinion). It has plenty of TP and soap. And the bathroom was overall clean. This is MY safeway since I live a few blocks from here so I guess I am a little biased. True it is smaller in size, but not selection, and always seems to be very busy, but they always have enough cashiers on to make things run smooth. I have been in many a safeway and waited forever (even in the suburbs) but I swear I have never waited more than 5 minutes in any line here at any time of day. What else is there to say? It's a Safeway...you know what they have. This one just happens to be right next to a beach and golden gate park so it kicks the other safeways butts. Today was our middle school class reunion so I thought that getting some sliders for everyone would be a great idea. I did some research and found that safeway did catering so I gave them a call to place the order. My order was complete and a confirmation email was sent to me. When I arrived to safeway and asked a worker about the order, they said they didn't have one. So i decided to show them my email confirmation with the details. However, they said they didn't get it. This used to be my primary grocery store when I lived out way on 44th Ave for 3 years. I'd hop on the 18 and arrive 10 minutes later to do my shopping. I like that is has a Wells Fargo inside and they're open on Sundays if you need to make a deposit or had a question about your account. I stopped here today because I had my Zipcar and figured I'd pick up my groceries whlie I had a car. I could have gone to the Safeway on Taraval or on Noriega down the street from my house, but it's Sunday and I did't have the patience for the lines at the smaller Safeways. I was able to walk in, pick up what I needed which made up 2 bags and check out within about a half hour or so. On a Sunday. At 5pm. Shocking? Maybe. I was just happy all the check out stands were open. I hate when I go to Safeway and all the check out stands aren't open and it's a weekend. If I had a car, I'd probably still make this my regular grocery store but I'm stuck with the one on Noriega. My only complaint though is I wish they had an organics section like they do at the one on King. I do recall one time I went here and I walked in the door while grabbing a basket and I totally slipped and fell on my ass. I don't remember what made me slip, but it was the most embarrassing thing slipping onto my ass in front of every single person waiting to check out. Oh well. I still like ya anyway, Safeway by the beach! And yes, it does get cold here if you're outside waiting for the bus. I froze my ass off many a times over the course of 3 years ... Points off for not being Trader Joe's, but as the closest one to me is on Masonic, closes relatively early in the evening, and has a 40 minute queue for the parking lot alone, Safeway is my best bet for late night hummus, pork chops, or kiwi fruit. Also as someone new to the city I still drive up Great Highway to Point Lobos to Geary to afford myself the most scenic supermarket-run driving experience. I detest the Deli. I live a block away, sometimes I want to come in for some chicken tenders and a coke, I've NEVER had a quick in and out experience. The line is the same whether you want a baggie of MSG'd chicken protien or 3 sandwitches. You always have to wait for the sandwiches to be made. Try to sneak in at a slow hour, they got you beat, they've already pulled the one guy that works it to do random tasks! Staffing at this Safeway is a major issue in general, I try to steer clear after 6 as the lines tend to be horrendous. It could really benefit from some self-service options. read more

This location is in a great area and has to be busy all the time since it's next to the beach and the golden gate park. I came here just because I'm working and had to use the restroom since I can go on my lunch break. It just became a mission to even get to the restroom. It's in the middle of the store but I'm used to others at the end. Not a big deal but I asked a lady who was coming out from the flower area to take a plant into the back. I asked her nicely since I'm still in work uniform for Amazon if they had restrooms. She said something so fast and cannot understand her. Find she repeated herself for me but in a rude tone say other side. That doesn't explain much so I just took off to the other side. Did find it because they have great signs. Had to wait in a line to use a one person/family restroom. It was so dirty inside I didn't even want to touch anything. It had urine all over the flower and toilet. Nothing looked cleaned at all. Finally finish as fast as I can just to get out of there. Notice it took 15 minutes for me to find the restroom wait in line and then get out. So I thought i will hit the deli just for a quick corn dog since my 30 minute lunch was about done. That's when I had to wait in line again because there was only 2 workers at a busy deli section. I don't get up to San Francisco nearly as much these days, but this is a convenient location right near Ocean Beach and Cliff House. There's usually plenty of parking and I hear it's open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's one of the older Safeway stores that is really due for an interior renovation sooner or later. Service seems to be okay for the most part at the checkout lanes, but still no self-checkout kiosks like the majority of today's stores. read more

Ugh. In a word: gross. Lucky for you I'm more than a one-word woman! Aside from being the most disgusting and ghetto store I've been in in a while, the produce is old and gross, the fruit is either green or moldy, and the selection pretty much sucks. To top it all off, I asked the chick at the deli if there was any low sodium ham and the obvious nutritionist proceeded to educate me (for a good 5 minutes!) about how neither ham nor turkey has sodium. Ham is sugar-based.... Yeah. They obviously require a semblance of food knowledge to work around food. Since I live a few blocks away I was going to this store pretty often, but after going today to try to save some time I remember clearly why I typically go wwwaaaaayyyy out of my way to another safeway, or even better, to an Albertson's! Update 11-5-07 OK, so I have to add to my review of the ugh-ness of this store. I neglected to mention that on at least 4 or 5 separate occassions (before I learned to NOT go there) the food I bought was bad (even though the expiration date was a week away). I still am forced to go there if I need something in a pinch since it's so close. In the past month or so I bought buttermilk there twice and BOTH TIMES IT WAS BAD. I mean, chunky style the day it was bought. I think the problem is that they do not store things properly.
