I just had an unpleasant experience with the staff. I went to the self checkout to pay. I hit start on the screen and scanned my first item to check the price. It was correct on the price and total price. I was adding more items and out of nowhere some employee barges between me and my bag. He says: "I have to void your item. I was checking items earlier and forgot to clear the screen" (this was clearly a lie as I had been checking the prices diligently of my items the screen). He then proceeds to go through my shopping bag without asking for permission. He then left without even apologizing for the inconvenience as I now have to scan my items again. This was clearly a way for this employee to check if I was stealing at self checkout. I have no idea why they suspected me of stealing. I have never been so insulted to shop for groceries. I would never recommend shopping at this locations due to this poor experience. read more

Prices are insane. Used to come here regularly but now I feel like even Whole Foods is cheaper. I recommend Costco and Trader Joe's and Walmart (Alcosta neighborhood market usually) over Safeway any day. Even if it's 2-3 times longer of a drive from my house in Windemere. I haven't been to Safeway for a long time. If you must go, use the rewards app. I remember there being some decent deals and fair prices only with the app. Otherwise I wouldn't even consider buying 99% of the things here. I'm sure if you looked you could find stuff that wasn't overpriced but the general trend for regular grocery shopping feels like I spend twice as much or more here for the same things I'd get at other places. I don't know how true that is but it feels that way. It's a shame, I had good memories walking here with my friends after school in high school over a decade ago. Like around 2014-2015. It was also convenient having a place open 24/7 (before 2020) that was like a 5 minute drive away. Not like I often go out from 2-5 AM anymore anyway, not like back in my college days, but I got good use from that. I remember having to squeak a squeak toy and talking to Ricardo the cashier. Hope he's doing well, I never come here anymore so I don't know if he still works there but he was my favorite. Also Cal from DVHS was great, I actually knew his brother. The staff here are good, and I strongly believe Cavanaugh should be scheduled back for the morning shift--he's truly like Mr. Sunshine. One of the few Safeways in the area with gas. Earn discounts with points earned from shopping. Lines never too long. Tho they built the pumps too close to the convenience store/cashier building. If you're in the lead pump, be careful not to pull too far forward. Have had several close calls with vehicles trying to exit after pumping. Adding to that chaos are customers walking from their cars into the store to pay for gas or buy snacks, drinks or lottery. In the main store, like all the unusual items they are starting to carry. All the worst sandwiches of my life have come from this Safeway. There's a woman named Kathol who just should not be making sandwiches. I work nearby sometimes, so I've ended up back here a few times, mainly because there's one guy who actually knows how to make a proper sandwich. But if you see Kathol or the older lady named Maji, do yourself a favor and leave. Today I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. For some reason, the grilled chicken isn't kept with the rest of the ingredients. It's stored in a plastic bag inside a pan, down under the microwaves. Kathol pulled the bag out, still sealed and dripping with chicken juice, and dropped the wet piece of chicken directly onto my bread. I asked her to heat the chicken, but not the sandwich. So she picked it up again, and now my bread was soaked with cold meat juice. Completely unappetizing. The gloves she wears are used for everything. She uses them to open the fridge, pull out the pan, open the microwave, hold the knife, and handle my sandwich. All with the same pair of gloves. No changes. Just full cross-contamination the entire time. And they don't even cut the chicken breast. They just stack one whole piece on top of another, like you're supposed to unhinge your jaw like a hyena to bite through it. No slicing, no care for how the sandwich eats. It's just lazy. And it's not just today. One time I asked for red onions and they didn't have any at the sandwich station. Instead of just saying so, maji walked over to the produce section, still wearing the same gloves, grabbed a raw onion, brought it back, and hacked it into cubes. Not slices. Not thin cuts. Just rough, square chunks like she had never made or eaten a sandwich in her life, and dropped them right on top. There have been times where she's made a sandwich for me and asked me to go pay at the front, and I just ditched it on a random shelf and walked out. I couldn't bring myself to eat it. She also asked if I wanted mayo and mustard and then drowned the sandwich in both. At that point, it didn't even matter anymore. This Safeway kinda sucks. Not only are they the only Safeway in the area not open 24 hrs, they're rude about it too. Came in today at 4:30am after two days of caretaking and wanted to grab some berries and some cereal. A lady working there informed me that they were closed but that I could still look for my things but the register wouldn't open for another 30 mins. Not even 2 mins later, a woman is kicking me out of the store and telling me to come back in 20 mins. San Ramon isn't that big. This is consistently one of the worst Safeways around, only convenience is bc I live nearby. Yesterday, I stopped in to pick up a couple things. It was quiet at the time. When I was checking out there was just one register opened. The checker scanned through some items as I placed my bag on the counter while I was paying. She threw in some things in the bag; egg salad on its side, green onions underneath a large can of soup and then she said " can you get that, I can't reach!" In a rude voice, referring to a bag of pasta & a box of cereal that she pushed to the end of the bagging area. Btw, she can clearly reach it. This is by far the worst experience--not because of the hardworking staff or service, but because of the dehumanizing treatment they receive from Safeway corporate visitors. These so-called bosses come in, throw their weight around, and speak terribly to employees who give their all, working tirelessly and often overtime. As a regular customer, I have never once had an issue with the staff. They are always professional and helpful. What's truly infuriating is witnessing the blatant disrespect from corporate people who clearly have little understanding of what it takes to actually run a store. Today, at the Bollinger Canyon Safeway in San Ramon, I witnessed two or three corporate visitors barking orders at the staff to clean up a mess they themselves had made with their pizza lunch boxes. The Safeway employees work for the store, not to pick up after corporate visitors! When I asked who was shouting and speaking so rudely to the staff, I was told it was the corporate visitors. I wasn't expecting much in terms of stock since I was there the day after Christmas, but I was able to find almost everything on my list. Rahman is an outstanding cashier. This place has so much potential. Good location, relatively recent renovation, large store with high ceilings and wide aisles. But the deli here just sucks. I saw another review that talked about their sandwiches, and I agree with that reviewer. There is another Safeway on San Ramon Valley Blvd that of course has the same menu and for some reason, the food at this one is always just a bit worse than at that other Safeway. Their sushi goes bad faster as well. The label would say best by next day's date, but it had already started going bad. Not sure if this has to do with their refrigerated display case (temp not as low as it should be?), or maybe they get the riff-raff fish rejects from that other Safeway. They have the best onigiri in the area, though, but only if consumed the day it's made (they only make it one day a week). The pre-cut fruit is either hard/unripe as hell or soft mush. We came here seeking sandwiches for our lunch. The menu was limited, but the outcome was delicious! I ordered the roasted turkey and I'm still thinking about the combinations of flavors. Hubs ordered roast beef with extra meat. Our boy got the chicken salad. Everyone was very happy and full. The store seems very clean and easy to get around. Departments are labeled above head and so are visible from the entrance. Folks working there were very kind and super helpful. I want to start off by saying I am sorry for my behaviour today at customer service. Young gentlemen was helping me get a money order. This middle age women cut in front of me and two another gentleman that been waiting over 40 mins. My rudness cause me discomfort. At the same token out of all the employees that work at Safeway only one person work for customer service. I see one cashier up front and the rest of them unseen or at lunch or break. I guess short staff. I try my best to avoid this location due to quality of meat they provided. I prefer to go to Dublin Safeway. The only good place in the store is Starbucks. The store is clean. Never once does someone say "I will be with you in one moment", they simply don't acknowledge you. Back about 8 years ago, this Safeway had a full on sushi bar with custom made to order rolls, but unfortunately they no longer anymore. Never seen the sushi bar before at a Safeway, but was really cool while it lasted. Store Itself: Busy. Lots of fully stocked shelves which is nice as many stores shelves are empty. Lots of products, especially the international isle, one full length isles for specialty items compared to other Safeways with just a small section. Service: At the deli counter, kind and friendly. Gave an extra piece of chicken for free. Food: 1. Roasted dark meat chicken 4 thighs 4 legs {4/5 stars, $9.99} - Delicious. Very tender and flavorful. Seasonings taste smokey and sweet with rosemary and thyme. 2. Rainbow roll {4/5 stars, $11} - Very fresh and tasty. Crab inside and an assortment of tuna and salmon on top. Rice was cooked well and not crunchy. Decided to get a unicorn whipped cream birthday cake from this Safeway. Based on my past experience with Safeway cakes, typically their buttercream cakes were too sweet for me, so I opted for the whipped cream for this purchase. And that turned out to be a good decision. Their whipped cream frosting and filling weren't too sweet and it was just perfect. The inside consisted of both yellow and chocolate sponge cakes - I liked both, they were perfectly baked so they were bouncy, slightly firm and still very moist. I could detect the richness of the chocolate in the cake. They were good. The design showed a really good effort. The colors were super cheerful, perfect for kids' birthdays. They used plastic decorations for the horn and the eyelashes, which was fine, but I think the decor would've been a lot more impactful if the eyelashes had been piped with chocolate frosting or the horn had been made of something edible. But it was a cake from a grocery store after all. read more

It's located within The plaza at Gale Ranch, has a gas station, and best feature -- 5am to 2am, that's darn near 24 hours. Typically, I shop at the other location on San Ramon Blvd (by the 680), but I wanted to give this location a try. Boy, I'm so glad I did. My eyes have now been opened! Large, clean, lots of sales, beautiful food court (sushi, sandwiches, hot foods), bakery, meat market, deli bar. The shelves are high and very well-stocked. I am duly impressed. I really wish I could leave a better review but all I have to say is DO NOT ORDER CAKES FROM HERE! I preordered a cake for my daughter's birthday. I even went in the day before to confirm the order, time and type of cake. Came to pick it up at the scheduled time (8am) and it wasn't even close to being ready. They rushed the order and we were late to her party because of this. The cake looked wonky, was all lopsided on one side. The one star is that at least the spelling was correct but then again we were right there waiting for it and telling them how to spell it. Horrible experience. Just had a great experience at self checkout. There was a very nice and patience lady overseeing self checkout. She took her time with me, to solve a problem with the personalized deals that it appeared wasn't applying to the items I was trying buy. Gave me a quick lesson on how to use the app, too. She listened to me, realized what the problem might be, and explained it to me in a way I could understand and follow what she was doing to help me out. Not sure why the clipped coupons weren't applying correctly, but she explained each step and pointed it out on the display so I could understand. Even she was confused why the deal wasn't applying. Then she gave me the difference between what it was charging me versus what the deal was. She made it right. On another note, Safeway could do a better job of displaying the deal price at self checkout to avoid confusion and save their employees time from having to explain these issues. Every time I use self checkout I'm left somewhat puzzled by the prices displayed and the breakdown. If you show a specific deal price, in the app, advertisements, etc. just show that deal price at the checkout display. Don't show the details of the different breakdown of the deal, just show the deal price. You can show the break down on the paper receipt. read more

On Saturday, Feb 17th, I went to Safeway as a normal routine. This time, I downloaded the app to get my additional savings for the first time. I collected my items and went to check out aisle #5, Ebony was again my Check Out Clerk. When I asked Ebony how to use my savings and tried to ask how to use this, Ebony rudely interrupted me and said, "what is your question." I told her you must be having a bad day. She got more upset and said "No, this how I am and I am very direct." I said I will pay full price. She said let me see your app and I checked out. It was a true bothersome that one employee can rub you the wrong way, and feel some sort of entitlement to speak to someone inappropriately. For that reason, I am sharing my experience with Ebony. Regardless of Ebony's job position being a Check Out Clerk, I think it would be beneficial for her to have better customer service training and a teaching moment. Lots of gas pumps. On a busy Sunday, I managed to get quick access to a pump and in just a few minutes filled my car with gas. The station is among the lowest prices in the area, although the prices in Walnut Creek are much cheaper. But if you're stuck in San Ramon, this is a good option for gas. They have water and squeegees, but none of the hand sanitizers actually had hand sanitizer inside. read more

Seems like the employee monitoring the self-checkout could be cleaning these on occasion (I'm sure there's windex somewhere in the store). Also, yesterday (12/2/23) all the half-gallon Lucerne fat free milk had an expiration date of 12/2. It all starts with the manager. Hopefully they'll read this and make some changes. Safeway has the best apple pies and bakery section. Every time I buy anything from the bakery here, it's just fantastic quality. Now, this is of no fault to Safeway alone, but the prices need to come down. It is just too expensive to purchase medical items or basic food products such as milk, bread, and canned foods. Darn I've been using this Safeway when it opened up and it just has gone downhill as I feel bad for the people working there. There seems to be alot on them in expectation and not staffed or enough space to what the parent co wants. I felt bad as a checker needed his break as he hadn't had one since he arrived and was told he had to wait till another checker returned (there are employment laws). The Director was there was he helped me with a return as no one came to that back customer service desk as I stood there for at least 5 minutes. Checkers saw me. The liquor mgr was a riot as he had his mask under his nose and the Director saw him. We all have mask fatigue and everything else but we want to get this over with. What else can we do. Safeway has what you need when you go in there so there's consistency there. Checkers are hit or miss. Easier to just do self checkout. It's a chore. read more

A great Safeway - I'm always in here after work before I go home at a late, odd hour. Clean with a good sized parking lot. Palm trees with Mexican Feather Grass at the base gently moving in the breeze. Nice eye candy. One of the nicer flower departments I've ever seen. Fresh, strong and robust roses I found here. Very fat stems just incredible quality - not the low quality type that they use for funerals - and only $10 for a whole bunch of them. Buy some of these for the lady - and she will love you for it. At 1am they close down the registers for 20 minutes I think for accounting purposes. I liked how they gave a 10 minute warning over the PA system... not all Safeways are as efficient. read more
