I hate writing one-star reviews. So much went wrong last night. Their fruit is horrendous. There were about 20 packages of strawberries. Every package had rotten berries in it except one which was only half full. I'm assuming someone opened it, threw away a bunch of rotten berries, then put it back. What earns the one star is the check out process. The store was crowded and only one checkout lane was officially open. (A young guy was checking in another lane with his light off and obviously trying to get people to stop entering his line.) We had tons of vegetables which makes self checkout a non-starter. Our checker was very pleasant but there was absolutely no one bagging. He didn't say a word about it. He just scanned everything until there was no more room on the belt. He didn't try to bag anything and just stared at us. So, my 11-year old, seeing the problem, stepped up and started bagging alongside me even though she had no idea what she was doing. Even after the cashier was done ringing us up and the food was piled all over the checkstand HE STILL wouldn't help bag. We get home, and it turns out my daughter put way too much food in her bag. The handles broke on her and when the bag hit the ground, a large glass bottle of apple cider vinegar broke soaking everything. A huge tub of blueberries fell out and scattered across our lawn. My daughter was extremely upset. I miss Nob Hill. Stuff like this NEVER happened there. read more

This store definitely has the best produce staff of all Safeways, but only the morning employees. Sometimes, if I go in the evening the guy I always see is not very helpful but the staff early in the morning go above and beyond and they will do their best to answer questions if it is outside their department. The long lines are a hassle, but I asked the cashier, and he said they are under staff and very little applications. So I can be patient for the lines because they do give effort. read more

Safeway's Just for U loyalty program failed me. I signed up, clipped coupons and a couple days later, shopped at Safeway. First, my digital loyalty member card would NOT scan at self checkout. Going to a manned checkout, my member card scanned but I discovered NONE of the clipped "deals" were applied. Being a former project manager, I documented the problem. I navigated to the online Safeway site to enter my complaint. After carefully writing everything up, I submitted my comments. An error message popped up indicating the Safeway server was down. And my comments vanished. Unbelievable. read more

I go to this Safeway quite frequently, as it's the closest one to my home. It's your typical newer cookie-cutter Safeway; where the design is all the same, with the self checkouts, with the large deli area where you can purchase your sandwiches, sushi, fried chicken & Chinese food. This is a large Safeway with its own gas station. I would have given this location a higher review.., but they change their payment options at their gas station!!! As of May 2013, they now charge you more if you use your credit card. In other words.., their local cheap prices are still the same.., but ONLY if you pay by cash. You now have to pay 10¢ more per gallon, if you pay by credit. For that reason alone.., I may never get my gas at this Safeway ever again. At least their store is nice with plenty of parking. read more

This store is definitely hit or miss. Honestly, it's definitely more of a miss. The reason I'm giving 3 stars instead of 1.5 stars is because of Karen in the bakery, the other two other nice ladies in the bakery, and Brianna (one of the assistant managers). Otherwise, everyone else is rude. It's frustrating because this Safeway is closest to me; but, I'll drive to the Blackhawk Safeway if I really need something from Safeway because most of the cashiers are nicer. The older lady that works in CS is very rude and loves to argue and almost refuses to believe when prices ring up much higher than my J4U app. Additionally, prices will ring up higher than their sales tags. It's frustrating and I rarely shop at Safeway due to being overcharged nearly every time I shop there. I'm talking about a few dollars! That's crazy. When I'm overcharged, I have to stand in the CS line until someone finally comes out from the back. I always show my items on the app, then, I have to physically walk back to the respective aisles and show them the item(s) on the shelf! It's ridiculous that I have to do that especially with that older lady. So, if you want to wait in an extremely long line to get overcharged, then wait at CS for someone to help you, then walk over to the items in the aisles and physically show the tags of the items that you were overcharged, then walk back to CS; shop here. Otherwise, be prepared ahead of time and know what to expect. read more

This store is in an awesome location. Convenient to access. However the store is managed like your local east bay ghetto town liquor store. Employees walk by you after waving them down for assistance....gaze at you and the line you're standing in....Always just one register open....Then after a 15 minute wait when the line extends back into one of the food aisles then they finally open another register. This store is a 10-15 minute drive from the house but I'd rather drive 10 more minutes to visit the Safeway across the Blackhawk Shopping cent 2/12/19. 5pm...they only have 4 register lanes open....Another long line after long line in the respective aisles beyond the register lanes. You'd think they'd have more registers open during evening prime hours. But no. *sigh read more

This is an exceptionally horrible grocery store. At all hours of the day there are cardboard boxes strewn across the store in the aisle, and numerous sticky patches on the floor. Not to mention that this Safeway has been downgraded, and no longer carries many premium items. There are at maximum 3 registers open at a time. Every single time I come here the lines from the registers are overflowing into the aisles. There is also the self check-out area which I believe to be the 10th circle of hell. Everyone there seems to have 20+ pieces of unmarked produce, which they must key in the code for, a total lack of computer literacy (or just literacy period), and an overwhelming urge to remove items from the bagging area. They should really consider a basic self-checkout literacy test, as well as enforcing a strict 15 item limit. On the bright side of things, it seems like they have collaborated with Imperfect Produce, because all of the tomatoes here are pale pink, not red. read more

I honestly don't get it.... I really don't! Why are there never more than two cashiers checking customers out at this specific Safeway? No matter what time of the day, or what day of the week it is, you will be waiting FOREVER to check out. Checkout lines literally grow into the grocery aisles. It's absolutely frustrating because it's the closest grocery store to our home... literally 3 blocks away. But we'd rather drive to Nob Hill or Safeway in Blackhawk because they definitely know when to open up more registers in order to get the shoppers out fast. Unless you have plenty of time to kill.... This store should be aware that it's customers don't want to be accosted by groups you allow to solicit customers there. Nor do we appreciate when a beggar woman begs you the way into the store and then follows you out to their car. Yesterday there was a woman who had a toddler who was crawling out of her stroller that she left behind so she could follow me. Safeway should have called child protective services. Safeway is already doing enough to separate their customers from their money. They don't need the customer to support anything else including the question on the keypad allowing Safeway to solicit money for a charity they will take credit for supporting when it is being done at the expense of their customers. read more

I went to the deli to get a sandwich but could not decide. So I was looking at the menu, Then this women came and asked me what I would like, told her not sure. Large selection and very well laid out store. I would definitely drive the extra mile to come here the over Knob Hill directly across the street from my house. Open 24/7 and has a Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Redbox and full gas station. Tip: You do need a Safeway club card in order to get the sale prices. read more

Probably one of the Worst experience I've had at Safeway. First of all there was only one line to checkout. (Not including the Express line or Self Check) The cashier not too experienced, no baggers. The customer in front of us questioned the price of an item. In the meantime the line behind us has grown all the way down the freezer section. No call from the cashier for help backup etc. Waited 15-20 minutes to check out! Come on Safeway!! No apologies for the long wait or thank you for bagging my own groceries!! This is my most frequently shopped Safeway store as it is closest to my home. I am generally able to find exactly what I am looking for, but if I can't there is always someone working there who is willing to help me. The only thing that I would want to see improvement upon at this store is the amount of cashiers. I'm not a fan of Safeway but the some of the ones out in Contra Costa County close to Safeway HQ are much nicer than any of the ones in SF, Alameda County or San Mateo County. The Dublin Safeway by Blush lets you order a sandwich at a kiosk and pick it up when called! While this San Ramon Safeway doesn't have the sandwich kiosk, it does have its own gas station where Safeway Card holders get discounted gas. It's also nicer/newer than the other Safeway location in San Ramon on San Ramon Valley Blvd. Inside the store you'll find a huge sushi bar with seats, pizza baking in ovens, Starbucks, olive bar, hot food bar, health food area and the option to make your own nut butter. The aisles are spacious and wide. The interior is clean and inviting. They make a decent sandwich, better than Nob Hill San Ramon. There's a $4.99 sandwich of the day special and Thursday is Panini Day. * Chicago South Sider ($5.49). This made to order sandwich featured Safeway brand roast beef, thick slices of horseradish cheese, ample amounts of a creamy horseradish sauce, chewy sweet Italian roll, leaf of lettuce, and tomato. Everything about the sandwich was fresh and generous. It had too much sauce (next time I'll have to ask for less) and the ingredients weren't the best but it was solid three stars. I used to go here with my High School crush for lunch ha ha wayyyy back when 10 years ago! haha They have a Starbucks inside and they used to have a sushi spot but I think it has now changed into something else. He probably doesn't even work there anymore but there used to be a Filipino dude working at Starbucks who would give me free drinks ha ha I hadn't been here in a long time but I was home in San Ramon this past weekend staying with my sister and we came here to get RedBox. I remember one time I think maybe 8 years ago I went here with my friend who at the time drove an SUV and OMFG her gas total for premium at the Safeway pump came out to $110!!! Why only 3 stars? Coming from our Local Safeway in Rodeo this location is HIGH CLASS! LOL. Reminds me much of Whole Foods. This place is FANCY ! Its quite clean and very organized, does anyone shop here because its that clean and organized lol. No dust on their food! They have a large array of organic food and beverages as well. I used to love shopping this safeway since it has the cleanest set up in san ramon, but the rude blond(gray) haired lady at the customer service desk has got to be a damn joke. i was shopping a few days earlier and my notebook had fallen from my cart. It was hard cover, magnet shut and from my mother in law. I had an employee call me the day of and say she found it, that it would be waiting for me at the customer service desk. i let her know i will come the next day. WELL. i show up the next day to pick it up. What's her name with the short chopped grey hair at the desk is telling me she must have thrown it out and she's "sorry". i'm outraged that someone would call and tell me my book was there just to have some incompetent employee throw it out. i work in customer service as well and safeway has done nothing to make this right. Tucked deeply in San Ramon's suburban neighborhood, this Safeway has to be the most complete of them all. It's larger and very much more organized than the others. However, their inventory pricing still having problems as they do at all locations. Review your receipt carefully and you won't have a problem other than a visit to customer service. The deli department includes sushi, Chinese food, and American favorites. In certain hours, you will find a sushi chef on site. The sushi is not bad at all. Anyone can get away with standard sushi these days and they do a great job doing that here. From experience, the deli service is excellent. While ordering Chinese food, they customized my order with no questions asked. Also, they have a gas station on site. Although the alliance between Safeway and Chevron solved the lack of gas stations on some locations, I find this is still beneficial and very convenient. read more

They need to shut this store down. The foods always molded & meats expired. I purchased some fish that had an expiration date of 6 days later. The next day the fish smelled awful in my fridge. I went to return the fish and was told I had to exchange it. I tried to find fish similar in weight, quality, and price and couldn't. I found some fish that was a bit cheaper. Instead of offering my money back or store credit the lady returned the cheaper fish I hadn't purchased and then rung the cheaper fish up as if I purchased the cheaper fish to begin with to balance it out as an even exchange. It wasn't or shouldn't have been treated as an even exchange because I paid $35 for one package of fish and $28 for another package which was $63 dollars. The packages I found were $17 and $22 which totaled $39. That was the only fish that was left in which I purchased the last remaining two packages. I had my receipt and was so upset and how she tried to cheat me out of my money. She was a heavy set white lady with glasses and blonde hair older in age. I think her name was Michelle but don't quote me. She kept licking her finger touching stuff after i witnessed her smoking cigarettes outside of the store as I arrived. She came straight in to help me. Didn't wash her hands or anything. As I shopped I witnessed I group of Indian teenagers shoplifting. No one batted an eye. Went down another isle witnessed another Asian guy filling a backpack up with food. I was appalled. I couldn't believe my eyes. As I exited the store there was an older white man pushing a shopping cart full of items out the store he hadn't paid for. I was really surprised at how no one caught any of these shoplifters. Maybe because they weren't black. This is where it gets interesting and yes this was in one visit. A young black woman paid for her items and was met outside the store by SRPD for suspected shoplifting. I stood by and watched because I witnessed three different shoplifting incidents and they weren't met by police at all. The police searched the black lady checked her receipts and she had in fact paid for all of her items so they allowed her to leave. I couldn't believe my eyes! This store is not only has poor customer service, and terrible food, but racially biased. I will not ever return to this store. If my phone wasn't dead I would've recorded it all. The manager who called on the black lady name is Alex. I mean he was beyond happy to call on someone who was his race and innocent. Black people will never learn. read more

Bollinger Safeway is THE BEST (there's a Danville one which is hit & miss on the customer service). To start off SAFEWAY employees have GREAT customer service and GREAT ATTITUDES. UNLIKE KFC SAN RAMON, they happily customized our request AND the cost of their fried chicken is THREE TIMES a better COST for the value and the flavor is ten times that of KFC. KFC is mostly skin and Safeway is mostly meat. read more

Had a very bad interaction with a staff member on 9/11/2019. Came in with my service animal to get 2 energy drinks. Staff member (did not get his name but he was collecting carts around 11:00). He was very rude saying no pets allowed and then when I told him its a service animal he said "wheres its vest?" I informed him it didnt need a vest. He then asked if I had paperwork to prove it was a service animal and I told him I didnt need that either. To which he said "well you need something" and that he was going to go get a manager. this made me feel very uncomfortable and embarrassed about having a service animal. this is very wrong. The ADA does not require either of those things and your employees need to be trained on the scope of the ADA so this doesnt happen in the future. read more
