Employee wanted to "ban me forever" and called the police... I encountered a homeless man outside of Safeway yesterday and denied his friendly request to buy him some juice. Afterwards I felt bad, he had asked about my day, had a nice demeanor and really just wanted some juice. Tonight, after purchasing my groceries, I found the homeless man outside reading a book, after a friendly hello and an exchange of names I offered to buy Mike some food. After we filled up a hand basket and paid for our food, an employee named Jose confronted us on our way out. Jose proceeded to tell Mike he's not allowed here. Jose was quick to come to conclusions and was surprised when I stopped him from harassing Mike. Jose told me to leave and that he's not talking to me. I told him that Mike was with me. Jose said he's tired of him begging for food. I clarified that I was the one who offered to buy Mike dinner and that he was kindly reading a book outside. I affirmed that the two of us were paying customers, minding our own business. Jose continued to confront us and told me that if I didn't leave he would ban me from the store and call the police. I told him that we wanted to leave but he was the one who stopped us. Jose proceeded to call the police so I stayed to talk with the officer. After Jose told the officer that Mike was pandering, I clarified the situation and the police ended up leaving without citing Mike. I understand how easy it is to judge someone based on their appearance. I get that Jose probably had reason to make those conclusions based on previous experiences, however, there was no reason to escalate the situation and make it an incident. At the end of the night, it was a waste of the officer's time, Jose/Safeway's time, and now they have an upset customer. I hope this was an isolated incident and that it was simply just an employee who deviated from an established training program. read more

I LOVE THIS SAFEWAY. Their signature selections are in the front where you can peruse pre-made salads, sandwiches, snacks and soups. They have a good amount of self checkouts and regular checkouts so that's always AWESOME. Because of that, the line doesn't get too long here. But I do go after the gym around 8-10pm. They also have a seating area on the left side where their Starbucks is located which is cool. LOVE HOW SAFEWAY HAS STARBUCKS. Sad how this Safeway location looks good on the outside, and has nice decorations, but the bathrooms are the worst out of all the Safeways in the area. I would think that I'm in a dirty gas station off the 101 based on the cleanliness of the restrooms. The floors are regularly streaked with dirt, paper towels and toilet paper strewn about the room, and stuff stuck on the drain in the sinks. Yuck. At least I know this to be true for the women's restroom, however I have heard the men's are not much better. Yeah the rest of the store is clean, but come on, not only the customers have to use the bathrooms, the workers have to as well. That's a statement on how much they really care about keeping clean. This review is for the Bakery only. I called to ordered some cupcakes ahead for an event. When the bakery employee answered she asked if I had already ordered them, I said no. I then told her the date for when I needed the order, which would have been 7 days later. The employee said to me I only needed 24 hrs in advance to order. I asked her if it was okay to just place the order since I was already on the phone and she said "call later I'm too busy". I'm not sure if I called at a very busy time but nevertheless that is not a way to respond to someone who is paying and inquiring for a service. I attempted to go grocery shopping the other night during the major rain storm as I had put it off for too long and there weren't many "creative" concoctions I could create with the pantry so bare. So off to Safeway I went, rain slicker and all. On my way to the car I stopped by our garage to grab bags (10) paper & 2 large cloth reusable bags. First I walked through the front doors and immediately saw a cart empty in my path and snapped it up filling it with my bags, purse, list, parka and hat. Off to do big things. Wait a minute...the cart won't work, the wheels are locked and I am just realizing that it seems an alarm is emitting from the cart-with all MY stuff in it! I didn't want to be racially profiled (a middle aged white woman, with her own reusable bags, lol.). I went back in the rain and found a cart, a very wet cart, transferred my personal belongings and once again headed off. I was pleasantly surprised with the service as I was approached several times during my trip asking if I was finding everything I needed. I had a shopping list but the photo I attached was 1/2 way through my shopping trip and had only crossed off 25% of my items, what to do? My trip to the deli always pleasurable as the nice Samoan check out boy is always friendly, smiling and a pleasure to do business with. I got creative with my cart and upon my items being scanned and bagged, I ultimately had 2 full carts. My cashier was a sweet woman who made me feel welcomed when customers were filling in line behind me and huffing when they realized how much stuff I had..It's not like I could go through self check out with 100 items! She said, "you have just as much right to be here and we need customers like you-they can go to the self check out line, you can't!" I shared it with the cheerful checkout girl that I was disappointed they no longer carried Tillamook Greek yogurt, which had been my favorite until they stop caring it. I was kind of just making conversation but she took this seriously and summoned her boss over to inquire about their stock of Tillamook yogurt. I thought that was very nice for her to care. Anyways, $500 later and two carts which I possibly couldn't push myself and the blustering rain waiting for me outside, the nice bag boy said let's wheel the carts out to the curb go get your car and I will put the groceries in it. After that part of the mission was completed, I tipped the nice young boy and was off to home to put everything away, and make a dinner with my score. Horrible customer service. I understand that we're in the middle of a pandemic, but that is no excuse for poor customer service and disrespecting your customers. I have scheduled grocery pick up on two occasions, and selected specific pickup times, only to have them tell me that the pickup times are only guidelines (not strict reservations). I am a single mother, so my time is limited. Their disregard for these pickup reservation times is not helpful. During one of the pickups, I found a used latex glove in my grocery bag. How is that even sanitary?! Another time I scheduled for delivery, and the DoorDash driver they used left because I didn't answer the door after the first knock (I was putting my kiddo to bed). The driver did not leave the groceries, even though I selected the "leave if no answer" option. Anytime you call the store, their customer service reps interrupt you and don't let you speak. We will be shopping elsewhere after these appalling encounters. Update: I finally picked up my order at 10pm (which was supposed to be ready at noon). Come to find out that over half my order was "out of stock." I drove across the street to the other Safeway, and shockingly found every item on my order. The staff in this store on Jan 31 night does not really know how to be considerate and needs to be properly trained. We have a naughty puppy who usually drags leash and likes to lie/stop on the floor whenever he is curious about things and wants to stay longer. If you've ever had puppy, you will know how common this is. Today we are standing in Safeway chatting, while our puppy lies on the floor again. While we just slowly started to walk for 1 sec without even feeling the leash being pulled, the staff came and told us: "Please don't drag your leash. " He said it in a way like he represents the justice. We were very surprised. Usually when people try to friendly remind you, they will let you know that your dog is on the floor and have you check if he is ok, instead of teaching you how to deal with your dog without really knowing what's going on. People with REAL good will will never say it in a way like you're doing something wrong or make it like you don't even know how to treat your dog. The staff told us to hold our dog instead of having him walk on his own, but come on, can you always hold your baby without having him walk? We expressed how bad we feel about being treated in this way, but the staff keeps finding excuse without really apologising. I'm here to do grocery, not for your "dog lesson". In the future, if you really mean something good, you better show your care and do it in a more polite way that people can better accept. Or you can try to really understand what's going on first, before giving such subjective advice. I understand you may come from good will, but you shall learn to say it in a good way! read more

After having a COVID shot at Safeway on my lunch hour. I went to the deli counter for a sandwich. As I stood at the sandwich counter there was a line of 4 or 5 people by the meats (fried chicken, chicken wings, etc) waiting to be served. Two employees were helping serve them. There were two employees making sushi at the sandwich counter. As I stood right in front of the register waiting to order, no one acknowledged me at all. I waited for quite a while and then asked the sushi makers if someone was going to assist me? One employee snapped at me and pointed to the two employees serving at the chicken counter and said they would come and help me. Stood there waiting a while longer... one of the two employees left the chicken counter and went into the back freezer. He got some nuggets and came back out and around into the kitchen I guess to put them in the fryer. He looked directly at me as he walked back and said nothing. Now all the people who were waiting for chicken when I got there have been served. There are now a handful of more people who have come since I got there and both employees are continuing to serve only them. I asked again to the sushi makers and pointed out that I was here before everyone now being served. The gentleman sushi maker says I told them you were here. At that point I politely left because, they were obviously aware of my presence and not only did they not come over and serve me, but didn't even give a polite indication that they saw me and would be with me shortly. Never even spoke to me. Terrible. I called corporate customer service to complain, she listened and said she would forward the complaint to the manager. I then asked to be contacted by the store and suddenly it became apparent she didn't even know which store. That tells me that she had no intention of forwarding the complaint, and I don't trust that she did or transcribed it accurately. Hence the review. The store itself is clean and well organized, the STAFF...ugh!!!! I thought it was a one-time "having a bad day" I'd run into ... but I've now experienced the consistent RUDENESS of the staff in this location over and over. After several times, I started polling my neighbors who shop there and found they'd had exactly the same experience. It's shockingly bad customer service. I'm talking rolling of the eyes, or audibly sighing, clear impatience when asked a question of any type. On two different occasions, two employees were conversationally joking around with each other and simply ignoring the guests lined up at the check out. When I politely excused myself and mentioned that we all needed to get moving I was met with actual spoken words like "yeah, yeah..okay." WTF!? Honestly, I'm NOT overly sensitive...but clearly there are many staff members in this store who OBVIOUSLY find it a burden to be at work. I'm DONE with this Safeway store. It has a convenient location on El Camino near a lot of apartments. I used to go there a lot until I found out how expensive their goods are. During the Monopoly Game I went in with my Instant Winner tickets. Upon checking out I had one of the worst experiences the checker was rude, short with me, spoke down about me in front of me to customers that were in line with me. Until she sent them off to other lines. Because clearly I was gonna be a while. She told me my token prizes I could not redeem when I asked someone from another store about it. Was told I could. Not only did she deny me that night from getting the items she didnt clear it do my acct shows I got it and could not then even get the items at all. She continuously spoke down to me. Demanded I match up all tickets with items neatly for her to double check if it was correct. Because of her, if at all possible I will never step foot in that store again. Upon getting home that night i did call the store complained to them and sent a letter to corporate. No one should ever leave a store feeling as upset and belittled as I did that night. We've all had months of adjustments, stress, etc. during the pandemic. I have tried very hard to at least be patient if not upbeat at stores as stock and quality fluctuated wildly and the once "normal" rules of shopping changed drastically over time. Recently, to manage life after starting a new job, I have been trying out more online delivery options and decided to give their "Drive up & go" service a chance. Drove over during my work lunch break, pulled into a designated space, and dialed the number. My call went to voice mail so I left a message with my name and parking space number and waited patiently. Nothing. I dialed again in ten mins...back into voice mail. This went on for almost 20 minutes and it became clear that this might go on for 20 more. I had to get back to work so finally got out of my car, walked into the store and went straight to customer service. When I told the manager why I was there, she looked at me and said "Did you call the number on the sign?" UGH! OF COURSE I DID! Long story short: after finally unpacking the bags at home, a number of the items I had ordered weren't even in stock. What a waste of time and money. "Drive up, sit in your hot car & prepare to get annoyed" seems like a better title to rename their service. And, yes, I realize that if this is my biggest problem today, I am a very lucky woman....but it's still disappointing and by writing this, I hope to keep you, dear reader, from trying to de-stress your life by using this service. read more

Pretty clean, well stocked, and decent sized Safeway. It's located in a strip mall together with some other larger stores to accommodate all shopping needs. On the left side of the store next to Starbucks there is a deli counter which has usually a long line during lunch time. There's also a stand with fresh, ready-made soup (around $5) for take-out, which is a nice lunch alternative. Solid store with good lunch options for all of us who want to save some $$$. This place is going down the hill. I've noticed that customer service has gotten alot worse mostly from the checkers/cashiers. There are times when they don't even look at me or say hi or even acknowledge that i'm standing in front of them. Its pretty awkward when they are scanning your food right in front of you and acting like you don't even exist. At times when they give me my receipt they just put their hand out and still don't even look at me or say thank you. So weird. I hate giving my business to a company whose employees are that unhappy. In addition, i have been noticing that the food selection is horrible. There were times where there were rotten tomatoes on the shelves. recently i had purchased celery that comes in the plastic bag and when i took it out at home most of it was rotten. Due to my busy schedule during the week, I am forced to shop on the weekends. I buy most of my produce at Sprouts, and found it super convenient that a Safeway had opened just across the street. However, I have now realized that I pay for that convenience by having to shop an poorly managed store. More often than not, when shopping this Safeway, one of the following, if not all of the following, happens: 1. They are restocking shelves during some of the busiest shopping times of the week. Those restocking the shelves do absolutely nothing to make it convenient for those forced to shop around them. They leave their giant heavy pallets of product in the middle of the aisle, have cardboard boxes laying all over the place, and usually sigh dramatically if you dare ask a question. A couple of weeks ago, there were no two-liter bottles of regular Pepsi left on the shelf. When I asked the person restocking the shelves if there was any Pepsi anywhere else in the store, I got the response of "nope". I later found some on an end cap on the other side of the store. Great customer service there, Pepsi restocking guy. Which leads me to #2... 2. Always, without fail, this store will be completely out of an item on my list, and when you ask someone if there are any other items elsewhere, in the back, etc, you are told no. They rarely offer to check in the back, etc. More than once I have happened upon items I had been told were out of stock later on in my shopping trip on an end cap or another aisle. Pure employee laziness. 3. I don't want to bag my own groceries. Does this make me lazy? Perhaps. But if I wanted to bag my own groceries, I would go to a store that gave me a cost break for doing so. When I am buying $150.00 a week, and I am shopping alone, I don't want to have to bag the crap myself. This store, on weekends, NEVER has anybody bagging groceries. It is as if you are expected to do it yourself. Then they ask you if you need help out to your car. One of these days I am going to say yes, just to see what happens. Will they close down the check lane to help me out, or will I be forced to wait for 30 minutes while the one poor woman they have bagging for 5 open lanes gets a second? 4. Almost every week, something I have purchased will not ring up at the correct price. Then you have to go to customer service and wait in line behind the 5 other people who are also having the same problem. Rarely is an apology offered. I am usually given the excuse of "you didn't run your club card quick enough". Seriously? 5. Most of the employees in this store are rude, or just have that "can't be bothered" attitude. I once had to have a price correction done by an assistant manager (male, Hispanic), and he visibly rolled his eyes at me when I told him the "Super Coupons" did not specifically say which Sargento Sliced Cheese was included in the offer, and that made shopping difficult. What a turd that guy was. I once took the time to write an email to the corporate office detailing all of the above. I got a canned response giving me the store manager's contact info, and told to complain to him directly. Really, if this is how badly he runs this store, I am not going to bother speaking to him. Employee behavior typically mirrors to that of management, so I'll pass. There is one young blond supervisor/manager type girl who works most Sunday mornings who is a breath of fresh air in a sea of crap. I wish I had her name, because she deserves some credit for not letting all of that negative energy around her seep in. There are some younger checkers who work Sunday mornings as well that are very nice, but that's about where it ends. So yeah. Not a fan. If I don't have to go to Sprouts, I just go to the other Safeway on El Camino in Sunnyvale. Their parking lot sucks, but their customer service is leaps and bounds better. read more

Went in to use the "FREE WIFI" advertised on the front of the store one evening at 8pm. Before I even sat down I was told to leave. They wanted no one sitting at any of the cafe tables because they were closing the Starbucks bar. Employees spoke among themselves but I could hear - evidently worried that a person sitting using their laptop after they were gone would "steal something." Within ten minutes I was told to leave by two different employees. I asked about the "FREE WIFI" advertised on the front. No one had any answer for me. They were amazingly rude. I like this Safeway I really do. They have a nice produce section with a decent selection of interesting and organic items. The store is large, clean, and has a Starbucks. On top of that the staff who work here tend to be personable and friendly. My issue with this location lies solely with management. Registers are always backed up because they refuse to adequately staff. Tuesday evening and we're talking about 20min waits because only 3 registers are working. Even the self check out lines take forever so don't go thinking you can pop in and out in 10min. I do not recommend Safeway as a grocery store. The Safeway employees do not have customers foremost in mind. They are mostly part time and are not committed to customer service. One example is that they often block the aisles so customers cannot easily pass and they are oblivious to their obstruction. One of them was unhappy when I moved his cart so that I could pass. Once I called to speak to a manager to request a specific Safeway product. This manager said they would order the product and said I should ask for her if it was not available. When I returned a week later, the Safeway product was not available; nor was the manager. Safeway has marketing broadcasts over loudspeakers that I do not care for. I want to shop in peace and quiet; and not to be sold on their sale of the day. When I complained, a top national level official responded (this is a paraphrase) that he did not care what I thought. Consumers Reports ranks Safeway very low - as 58 out of 68 for grocery stores in the United States. Other Yelp consumers evaluate Safeway as very low and I agree. read more

This Safeway is clean and we'll stocked. However, it does get busy, very busy. They're is a gym, toy store and other shops in the same shopping center so people tend to take care of many things here. I would shop here when I would leave the gym or after a toys r us run but it wouldn't be my first pick. The store has friendly and efficient staff but the area is heavily populated. The produce section is clean and well stocked. The entire store is very clean and well stocked. If you go here early in the morning you should be fine. In the evening its busy here too! if i could give zero stars i would. im usually a very kind and patient person and i shop at this safeway quite often and today was the worst experience i've ever received. long story short my uncle needed groceries so i helped him get his groceries when it came to payment he used is EBT card my uncle went into the store KNOWING 100% that he had $170+ on his card but for some reason the cashier (Maria) kept saying his card had no money on it, instead of trying to help and figure out the reason why it kept saying that she kept saying, "sir there's no money on this card, nope there's no money it's saying $0 is the balance i'm going to void the transaction" she proceeded to void the transaction she seemed to be in a rush to get her line down rather than helping a guest who was already in front of her! we then got introduced to BRANDI, she's the "customer service" manage and .. pardon my french but... she doesn't know SHIT about customer service with her awful attitude! off the bat she had an attitude with my uncle, she basically accused him of lying about having any money on his account even though this has happened before AT THIS SAME LOCATION and was assisted by another manager and BRANDI told my uncle, "no, no they didn't do that" again.. accusing my uncle of lying he even went out of his way to call the EBT customer service center to get his balance ... what do you know HE HAS MONEY $170+ on his card and yet continued to have an attitude. i made the mistake of not seeing the social distancing label on the floor and slightly leaned on the counter of the customer service desk and Brandi rudely said, "uh yeah i'm gonna have to ask you to not lean in the counter that's why there's red markings on the ground for SOCIAL DISTANCING" SHE WANTS TO SPEAK ABOUT SOCIAL DISTANCING YET DIDNT HAVE HER MASK ON PROPERLY!!! her nose clearly exposed!! once i confronted her about her attitude she SLIGHTLY and i mean SLIGHTLY toned it down. I work in customer service, for the love of god i work at a lucky supermarket and a target and deal with guests on a daily basis !! never would i ever talk to another human the way she spoke to us! it's beyond me how she got the position of a customer service manager with that poor of an excuse of "customer service" i am disgusted by her as a human. the gentleman who helped us after the devil lady brandi was i believe to be named Brandon?? something of the sort... honestly flew over my head because of how frustrated and uncomfortable i was about the whole situation... anyways, HE. Well they get three stars because the store looks nice and clean! i do agree with the other reviews on here that they are a bit pricey! when i want some things i go to walmart cause they sell it cheaper but there to you have to watch prices i have notices even walmart prices are going up so got to keep your eyes open!.. cashiers here all seem to be pretty friendly for the most part! sometimes the deli department is hard to get someone there wish they would slice there lunch meats a little thicker sometimes it shredded.. anyways for the most part the store is pretty nice! as to the review about there bathroom i really wouldn't no i try to avoid public bathrooms lol!! read more

WORMS in the produce! Seriously, I've bought brussel sprouts, artichokes, broccoli, cauliflower, and many other things. Never all at once, but they've almost always had gross worms in them and I've had to throw them out. Plus, the veggies are crazy expensive here. The only thing I can really say is alright is the deli. Otherwise, Sprout's is right across the street and is better and cheaper in every way. read more

Wow, this is a fairly new Safeway and I love it!! I was here last night & there were many produce vegetable items that were either $.88 each or $.88 a pound. 6 self checkout stations! US Bank located inside StarBucks located inside. Rest rooms located directly next to the Starbucks. Well lit, sparkly, shiney, well stocked new store! This might become my Safeway of choice. read more

Just what this area needed was another. Safeway. That makes 3 Safeways within 1 mile of eachother. Along with a Trader Joes, Sprouts, and a Luckys, this area is polluted with grocery store chains! Nevertheless, I still visited this Safeway to check it out during grand opening week. The store is well stocked, fresh produce, self-checkout, there's plenty of parking too, however, it does get crowded. There's a large Starbucks with plenty of seating and WiFi as well as a US bank inside. read more
