Today was my first and probably last visit to this Safeway. It happens to be the store that provides delivery service to my home. You see, I work all week and we have my mother, a 92 year old Alzheimer's patient living in our home. My daughter, age 25, takes care of her grandmother full time and she suffers from fibromyalgia. We utilize the shopping delivery service out of necessity. It frees up what little time I have left during the week to do other things.
I had some items that needed to be returned. I made the mistake of going into the store without the credit card used for the Safeway.com purchase. I hadn't thought about it when I left the house. In 2011, most stores don't need your card to find your purchase transactions. I was barely greeted by a young man who never cracked a smile or offered anything to indicate that my interaction with him would be pleasant. When I explained what I needed to do, his response started with "I can't.' After expressing my discontent, he went off to talk to someone behind the locked door. When he returned, the response was the same. I am now incensed. He calls for backup.
The assistant manager of the store came up and as he approached the service counter, I indicated that "I can't" would not be an acceptable response. He, however, confirmed that they can't do anything without the credit card. Is this store policy or Safeway (corporate) policy. He indicated that it is company policy. For how long, I ask? Over a year... How odd, I am thinking to myself. I regularly place orders on Safeway.com and the store that once served us (right down the street on El Camino) gave me refunds in the past--in fact, within the past two months. They offered me multiple options for refund by credit card, gift card, or cash back. Usually, all I need to do is replace damaged or unwanted substitutions, and today, I would have appreciated the option of being able to shop later with a gift card.
The assistant manager said if the Safeway/com person were there, they could take care of it easily. He did replace the two packages of fruit cups that were damaged in transit. I had two packaged meats that he said I could shop for and replace at equivalent value, but I was under a time constraint. I truly didn't have time for that today. Shopping for meat is time-consuming and I had other things on my list to accomplish with limited time available before Mom's sitter had to leave. It would have been so simple to issue a gift card since the money would go right back into a Safeway purchase eventually. What is the difference?
What I've learned is that the Safeway.com rep has special hours. I was in the store just before noon on a Sunday and no one could easily resolve my issues. You can't just drop in to return something from a .com purchase. It doesn't matter that they are using this particular Safeway's inventory or building structure to operate their elite business.
The assistant manager of this store clearly has no freedom to make decisions that are in the best interest of the customer and has zero customer service capabilities.
I felt defeated and left the store with two packages of meat priced at just over $20 that I would never use. read more
