Deli is very rude and lazy. Definitely the worst safeway deli in the bay area. Asian lady denied making me a all meat sandwich because it "wasn't on the menu" I said every other safeway makes it anyway but she refused and said rudely she would charge me and extra $3 for the sandwich. So I went to get a mac and cheese fried chicken combo instead so she followed me. I asked how long the mac and cheese was the because it was more than half way gone and looked hard. I asked her if they were making more but she ignored me and asked if I wanted it or not. I gladly said no and went somewhere else. Wow, talk about hit or miss with this location, especially with all the reviews. I live closest to this Safeway, but ever since Sprouts opened up across the freeway I've been going there ever since. IMPO, I really don't see anything wrong with this Safeway as I usually find what I need, pay, and leave. Ranking-wise, if you were to compare the newer (Contra Costa Blvd) Pleasant Hill location with the severly infected-wound looking (Willow Pass) Concord location; This Safeway is definitely between them. It's as average as the other (Broadway Blvd) Walnut Creek location, but slightly better. The reason I decided to write up a review was because of one employee working late night. I had leftover Indian food, but no naan to go with it. Jim, who searched the new shipment of boxes in the stockroom as well as the special shipments for the deli, at least made good effort in finding it. I come in here from time to time on my way in to work in the morning. Their giant parking lot in the Countrywood Shopping Center usually has a spot waiting for me up front so that I can runin and grab last minute items for our office parties: like breakfast foods, condiments, and even an occasional dessert. It's as easy to navigate as any grocery store, but if you can't find something, there are usually helpful employees not far away. This morning I encountered a nice young man in produce and asked about chopped nuts. He showed me several bags of sliced nuts (for salads) and then asked another employee where additional bags of nuts for baking would be. With their help, I found all sorts of delicious toppings for our staff's good-morning hot oatmeal-bar. Express line was fast and I was walking back to my car in the least amount of time possible, stopping only briefly to fend off the woman who was following me through the parking lot and babbling about her religious literature. read more

Super friendly great location. I stopped by the bakery yesterday to look at cakes for my co workers bdays. I needed the cake for the next day. I wanted all chocolate. She suggested i buy it at the time because she couldnt promise they would still have it. I thought it was a great idea. The bakery register was closed so i had to run to the front registers get a duplicate receipt and bring it back to her. All this on my lunch hr. I asked if she could write the names on the cake and have it ready for me by 10:30. The older gal said, no problem! I wrote what i wanted it to say on the receipt. She told me 2x i will have it ready for you! I came back the next day and the young man helping could not find the cake. He finally located one that said Happy Bday Kim but not the other name i requested and it was an all white cake not an all chocolate like i picked out! She finally came out from the back same lady but acted like she couldnt remember me or my order! Luckily the cake was still in the cake display and the young man offered to write the names on it for me. He has awesome writing! I have 3 Safeway locations all well within a 2 mile radius of where I live so it's usually just a matter of which one I am passing by first. However, for a planned shopping trip, this is my Safeway of choice. Why? Simply because it's the largest of the 3 locations in Walnut Creek, with the widest aisles, the most inventory and looks and feels like a regular sized safeway. The one downtown on Mt. Diablo/Broadway and the other down on YVR, barely have what I am looking for and have limited varities and brands. This Bancroft Safeway is clean, spacious and has the variety and stock I would expect from Safeways. The other locations are just convenient stops if you're nearby but not good for a large grocery shopping. This location is the real deal. Minus 1 star because there are never enouch lanes open. They have those "self-checkout" lanes but I can't stand waiting to use one of those-the person ahead always has a panic attack on how to use it. I'd like full service please! I had the worst Customer service experience ever in US. Tahara at the customer service office treated me and my wife very rudely, non-gentle and unfriendly. She refused and tried to ski off assisting me sending two wires and told me that she will do only one because she has other things to take care of. when I insist and ask her gently to do the two wires she did but her attitude was very bad to us and also she refused to check out some other items although that is her job. I told her very nicely I will not file a complaint but she need to be nicer with customer she rudely replied "this is my best" The reason why I put this review here because even after I let that experience go and I had forgive her, today I'm surprised that one of my two wires didn't go through, And I have to go back again to get a refund and re-send it I have a feeling that she did that to me. read more

Yay! Finally found a Safeway near my place with self check-out - makes all the difference in the world, since for some reason the regular lines take forever to get through. I'm more of the shop-every-day type of girl, and always get stuck behind a huge basket of groceries when I'm holding nothing besides a pack of chicken and loaf of bread. Finally, a solution for the little guy! Otherwise, a clean, well-laid-out Safeway with decent discounts on clearance meat and random things I need at the last minute. The worst experience with a cashier today. The cashiers name is ALEX. I found out his name at my receipt because he didn't introduce himself not wearing a name tag. He didn't tell me his name when I asked him. I spoke to the manager about Alex today and I hope that he will have a talk with him about customer service and the importance of Social distancing / COVID PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES and about being courteous to people especially his customers. I don't even know where to begin. The whole place is a disgrace, management should be ashamed! Period! I stopped by this location after a meeting with a client in the area to pick up a few basic items. First off, the "fresh produce and organic," section literally was completely bare, nothing, no joke. I should have left then, but gave Safeway the benefit of the doubt they had a busy day. Moving forward, employees just casually walk around and do nothing, that is very obvious. And on too the Deli, the highlight, 2 employees, and I understand it was 5:30pm, but Safeway is a billion dollar corporation, hire more people during busy hours. First off, there was a line, which was fine, the man and woman working the counter began arguing as to who to help. Then the man told me when it was my turn he was going on lunch and let some gentleman that just appeared help me. He cut the cheese to paper thin slices, I mean what was the point of wasting 15 minutes in the line to not even receive anything of quality? Lastly the checkout lines were ridiculous, everyone moving at a snail pace, so I decided to use the self checkout, bad idea, again. Chip reader cannot read my card, was "processing" for a few minutes, lady comes over to help, starts to process, then she shuts it off. At this point I pay in cash. Management, I don't EVER write bad reviews nor would I waste my time, but this Safeway needs major work, I understand I am one person, but the reviews are beginning to speak for themselves. This is my local go-to Safeway when I need to make a full shopping trip. While I live within walking distance from the downtown Walnut Creek store that one is on the small side and does not have as many products if you need selection. I popped in on Friday night about 7:30 to buy groceries for a party tomorrow. They had everything I needed and I was able to get in and out with no problems. This review is specifically for Mikayla and Elisa in the bakery department. They provided EXCELLENT customer service and ultimately a beautiful cake for my son's first birthday. I had specific requests since we were having an "Up" theme to our party and Safeway doesn't offer that theme as an option in their cake book. So, I requested a sky blue cake with balloons flying away. And I asked that a spot be left open for my own cake topper. Mikayla had a great can-do attitude and was so helpful. She even rewrote her notes onto a fresh order form and consulted with Elisa. This really showed her attention to detail. Also, Elisa was very attentive when I arrived to pick up the cake a little earlier than scheduled. She decorated our cake beautifully. My guests were raving about our strawberries and whip cream cake. Thank you ladies. You knocked this one out of the park. Brava! read more

I recently attempted to call this Safeway in search of an item based on the suggestion of another Safeway versus driving all over looking for it. I was told by another store they didn't have an inventory system that shows what each store might have in stock and to call around to confirm if another store has it. Great advice seeing how expensive gas is right now!!! Back to the review of this store... I called the store and when what sounded like an older lady with a very strong accent picked up the phone she immediately put me on hold after telling me " I might have customer waiting" which left me very confused... am I not a customer too??? Eventually she picked up the phone again and after stating what I wanted a few times because she couldn't understand Sunkist strawberry lemonade soda in a 12 pack ( I thought it was a simple and direct request) I got extremely frustrated. I simply asked if I could speak to someone else that might understand me better and she proceeded to keep putting me on hold and alternated between telling me no one else can help me and she knows they never carried the item and repeated the wrong item to me and stating " hold I have new customer" over and over. After about 30 minutes of this I gave up and just decided to drive to the store and see for myself. I gave this review two stars because a really nice gentleman walked by when I was in the aisle and offered to help me locate the item. There was a tag for the item on the shelve unfortunately they haven't been restock due to a shortage. Out of curiosity I walked over to the customer service area prior to leaving since I was already in the store. And I'm thankful I hung up the phone because the same lady was at the counter. I didn't see a name because she didn't wear her name tag but she was an older Indian lady with dark hair in a ponytail wearing a sport like vest. AND DEAR SAFEWAY MANAGEMENT OF THIS LOCATION... please remove this lady from interacting with the customers. From what I witnessed. She was placing calls on hold and looking at her phone or the weekly ad I'm assuming versus helping people who calls. She was even more rude to the two ladies I saw waiting for help in person. There is no reason to tell people you know how something is when they are simply asking for your help to see if something is in the store or where the item is located. Not everyone knows your store or policy. If she doesn't want to help people and it isn't my place to tell anyone what they should do but customer service is about wanting to help people and being scolded for simply asking where the location of an item is seems wrong. If she knows something and the person in front of her doesn't, try showing them versus just telling them you know and why don't they know. The answer seems simple... we don't work there so we don't know. Treat someone with kindness please especially if they are lost, confused, older, or unaware. There should never be a reason to treat someone coming to you for help like they're a waste of your time. read more

For some reason there's a lot of grocery stores and supermarkets in Walnut Creek with completely insufficient parking (I'm looking at you Sprouts). This store in the Countrywood Plaza had the same problem for a while, after the Safeway on Ygnacio closed, but not half as much since the new Ygnacio/Orchards Safeway opened in late 2016. There's now easy parking at all but the busiest times. Once you get inside, this store is a clean, friendly, midsize Safeway. It can feel a little cramped, especially when busy, but it's rarely too busy now (see above). The fruit and veg section is excellent: diverse, plentiful and fresh. Fish and meat sections are fine, but not fantastic (go to Lunardis for a fantastic meat counter with exceptional service). And the wine and beer sections are larger and better stocked than I'd expect for a store this size. Prices are cheaper than the more fancy boutique grocery stores (Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Lunardis) but not as cheap as the discount stores like Grocery Outlet. Check out the "manager's special" section in a tiny corner next to the deli: it has lovely ripe cheeses at half price (perfect to eat that day, but not for keeping much longer). The lines can be long at busy times if you don't use the automatic checkouts, but I've always found the cashiers to be super friendly (my wife loves Doug in particular because he is always super helpful and polite). This is my local store and in the scores of times I've been here I've never had a problem with the staff or service or with other customers. read more

May I recommend not coming here late in the evening. Like I did. It was around 9:30pm and my meeting was over that I was at over at Panera. I needed some milk and fruit for home and figured why not, Safeway is right here. I got my roughly 5 items without any problems. The layout of this store is the same as any other newly upgraded Safeway in the area. This one does have the self check out lanes. I utilize these when I have a small amount of items to purchase. I'm going to guess that this is the funnel for all weirdos who go shopping at night to be pushed together. I was confronted with a woman who pretty much started preaching to me about the dangers of vaccinating my baby. Look, I don't come to Safeway begging for unsolicited terrible medical advice. Just because I have a baby with me doesn't mean I'm nice nor do I care about whatever you have to say. I sadly had to tare this woman a new one for dispensing inaccurate medical advice and that she was doing more of a disservice to the public by spreading false information about vaccinations. Don't come here at night, especially with your baby. As a matter of fact, avoid this store past 8 pm. Come early for all your shopping needs. read more

For the bulk of the Thanksgiving feast grocery shopping (except for the turkey, which was purchased earlier in the week and already is in its brine bath and except for a few things that we bought at County Square and at Trader Joe's), we planned to go to a Safeway. There must be four Safeway's within a mile and a half of us, but we chose to come to this one as it's the most spacious and well-stocked. Incidentally, one of those Safeway's, the one that doesn't carry Nutter Butters, we've nick named "Safeway Lite." I really appreciate the good service at this Safeway. The produce folks are especially nice; though I didn't need any advice this time, in the past, they've taught me how to pick a good watermelon and have even found me some sage in a poultry package. They make it a point to ask if you need help if they see you wandering (though sometimes, I'm wandering because I can't decide what's for dinner). Today, I couldn't find cream of mushroom on the cleaned-out shelves. It was completely my fault for leaving the shopping to last minute; in desperation, I asked a guy who was stocking the shelves if he knew where there were some more cans. He stopped what he was doing to take me to another display. Green bean casserole saved! The check out process was much less a pain than I'd expected (they had extra checkers scheduled to take care of last minute folks like me). In much less time than I'd expected, we were out the door. Three grocery stores in one day. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have to make Thanksgiving dinner. And, come to think of it, it's probably not a good idea to leave massive grocery shopping to last minute, either. read more

I've only come across one or two enthusiastic/above average workers in the past ~20 years. For example, today I came across an inattentive employee. Instead of going to the self checkout lines, I went to the normal lanes. The worker, Jamal, failed to acknowledge me and instead chatted away with his coworker. I don't have very high expectations from employees at stores and a simple "hi/bye" would have sufficed. Even when the cashiers at Safeway are silent, it usually doesn't bother me. However, in this situation I thought it was unprofessional of Jamal to be chatting about non-work related things while ringing up a customer. read more

Oh where do I start??? Well first off, the bakery seriously needs to give their employees spelling lessons. I went in one day to order 2 huge cakes for a musical cast and crew party. It was 4:45pm and they were closed. I came back the next day to order the cakes for that afternoon. One was to say "Rock and Roll Alice in Wonderland - Congratulations Cast and Crew". Now I'm not sure if maybe their decorator was hanging out smoking stuff with the Caterpillar from Alice or just plain stupid but when I got the cake to rehearsals it read "Rock and Roll Alice in WOUNDERLAND". WOUNDERLAND???? Is this a German version?!?! Who can't spell "wonder"? I am at a loss for words... Also, be prepared when shopping and make sure you have a lot of time on your hands. This Safeway is Geriatric Night of the Living Dead! Old people everywhere blocking isles and of course moving extremely slow. Don't bother to say "excuse me" because they can't hear you. I'm just waiting to turn down an isle one day and see Someones dentures just laying right smack dab in the middle of the floor! Clean up on isle 5!!!! Most Checkers are very friendly. My wife and I ordered a cake from the bakery here to celebrate our daughter's birth at church coffee hour. Because of timing, the cake had to be in our car by 8 am so we would have time to get to church. My wife stopped by the Safeway the night before, to double-check that they would be able to have the cake ready in time. No problem, she was assured. Next morning, we arrive. We are a bit late (8:20), but that should be no problem - we'll pick up the cake and be on our merry way, right? No such luck. My wife's sister is taking waaaay too long in the store, so I come in to see what the problem is. I see our cake, half-completed. It looks hideous. There is a baker slowly waddling around, taking her time as she works on the cake. I ask how long it will be and am told 5 minutes. 5 minutes pass, then 10. This baker apparently has no conception of time. I say that the hideous piece of sweetened bread on the table, far from complete, will have to do. Baker replies "but I'm almost done..." I lose my shit,, and, nearly yelling, explain that we needed this cake half an hour ago, my wife double checked to make sure it would be ready by then, and they have no excuses. Felt good, but still no recompense for an ugly cake that was way too late. read more

If I could give them no stars, I would. I have been coming to this location since I moved out here and it wasn't too bad. But my last few visits (including the visit I made today) was absolutly disgraceful. The last time I went there, the manager had told me that kids my age dont know how to make change even though both my mom and I had complimented him on the store. I'm not sure how he got me not being able to make change, even though I do. I guess since I am 24, that means I am brat and don't care about school, etc-I have my masters and actually liked school! I also have common sense-which is rare. Now to today's visit! I had checked out in the self service portion of the store. Of course, there was someone looking over the stations. When it was my turn, I went up and put my jamba juice cup where the bags are and I began checking out. The screen prompted me that help was needed even though it had nothing to do with my cup being where it was. Instead of the lady just letting me know to make sure to not put anything extra there, she tells me "you are making harder for yourself and you can't put your garbage where it doesn't belong." I wish I was joking, but I'm not. This place makes me want to go back to Berkeley where it isn't stuffy and I won't be typecasted due to my age. read more

All the Safeways in our area are bad. Management is not present to deal with issues, the checkers don't seem to be very happy, or good at what they do. Half the time when I ask where an item is located, I'm directed to the wrong aisle. It is a negative experience each time I go to one, so I've crossed them off my list as a possible choice for grocery shopping. This review is about the deli, as Safeway groceries are way overpriced for the most part. Anyway, between Abraham and Carminda the deli department really sucks. Three sandwiches last night took over 30 minutes because of a simple mistake that would have been easily corrected had Abraham actually come back to the counter from the back. WTF? The line is five people, including me so th other workers are moving on to other customers after Abraham had to put something up that he couldn't find originally for my sammich. When he puts it up, another worker came up and starts assisting the next person, which was the right thing to do. Except, apparently stupid ass had meant for him to come help us... So, Abraham is nowhere to be seen and doesn't come out again except to help another customer at the other deli counter five minutes later. AGAIN, WTF??? So, I start complaining. Carminda tries to call him over, but he refuses. As soon as that happens, she pretends she didn't see what happened. And when my husband asked for her supervisors name, she just sort of shrugs and looks at us confused. She gave me a free sandwich coupon (which we won't be usin'), I'm pretty sure I hadn't purchased enough to earn it. So, she KNEW I was ticked. Anyway, I called this morning and spoke to the deli manager, Liz who expressed her disgust and apologized--apparently she has ALOT of problems out of the evening deli crew. Another checker yells out sarcastically that the floral department is closed. Real funny... Been standing here for 15 minutes. No one in sight. If you shop at this Safeway, check the expiration dates on everything you buy. Over the last year, this Safeway has become *much* less diligent about keeping expired product off the shelves. It's a problem in every aisle. This evening, in the pre-packaged cold cut section, every package of O Organics turkey had a use or freeze by date of September 10 2010. Today is October 13 2010. I took all the packages, left them at Customer Service with a note (because of course there was no one available at Customer Service.) Safeway was my grocery store for a year when I lived in Concord. I went there once a week. It had everything unlike Trader Joe across the street from my apartment. One day I had a craving for strawberry rhubarb crumble. I went with my friend to Safeway to see if they had any rhubarb. When I couldn't find it, I asked the produce guy and he directed me to a booklet which stated which fruit/vegetables were in stock and when. Turns out that rhubarb is only in season from April to September. I think I was looking for it in the month of February. We ended up going home empty handed. And now I'm craving that sweet and tart red staining crumble. Rhubarb is really good. It's so much better than celery. You can't make dessert out of celery. Celery is rhubarb's evil twin. read more
