Honestly- the best bakery in Charleston. Whenever I see that giant magical display case of sweet treats, I just get so happy! Everything always tastes fresh and delicious. And the staff is always friendly. The hiccup comes with the dine-in... if this was just a bakery, I would have given it 5 stars. But the dine-in is just a little lacking. While I've had some things I've enjoyed, others things have been a bit of a let down. Let this be your place to stop for delicious baked goods and desserts. Their pastries just don't look quite right! For example, their baked croissant dough looks more like an Italian-style laminated dough than a French one, which would be fine because I would eat a sfogliatella without complaint, but croissants are French and should look and taste like a croissant. Not what I was expecting. As per the website, I thought it was more Mediterranean. We came for breakfast and it was your typical American menu with smaller choices. We waited a long time for the waiter even to get our coffees and order. I ordered pancakes with a side of sausage. The pancake didn't tasted good. My husband ordered the sandwich croissant and was regular. We had to remind her about our order and drinks. For spending more than $50 for breakfast, I would have expected better. Caveat: we stopped in for pastry and coffee, not a full meal. After our trip out to Fort Sumter we we walked over to Saffron for coffee and bakery. OMG! Wonderful! I had the Napoleon (see photo). It was nice and flaky and the filling was delicious. One of my companions had a decadent chocolate torte (see photo) it was unbelievable. My wife had the chocolate eclair. She didn't want to eat the whole thing, but it was so good! The coffee is wonderful, nice and strong, it kept us going for the rest of the afternoon. This place confused me. I walked in on a Saturday afternoon and for a minute I thought I had entered an establishment that was actually closed. The vast space had terrible lighting. I saw no one. I walked around observing all of the displayed desserts- croissants plain and many flavored ones, mini pies, cakes, cookies, cheesecakes etc etc. When I finally decided on what I wanted I had to actually look for an employee to help me. The strawberry shortcake was OK. The mini pecan pie's crust was rock solid and the filling needed more nuts. The prices were reasonable but the bakery quality just wasn't there. This could have been a three or four star for me. I expected to walk in and be blown away by every dessert. I was not. They are in my opinion comparable to Publix bakery. I don't see a distinct difference. But I did add one star for the variety. I did not want a traditional birthday cake. Very tired of that. The desserts are a great selection, however we found the actual 'cake' parts of our desserts to be dry. I would absolutely recommend the following: - mini amaretto cake - croissants, butter or ham& cheese (only 3.50- O.o woah) - gyro lamb - chicken tenders - good size, good eats - Ruben - crab and lobster salad sandwich- well seasoned served on a good bun with enough meat - parking- yay - large chocolate cookie I did not love but liked the following: - blueberry croissant - lemon cream cake - strawberry shortcake ( needed more toppings but pretty) - hazelnut mini cake/ torte. We walked over from king street and found this cute bakery and restaurant! I loved the outdoor space they made. It had a good breeze and shade as well. We ordered the crab nacho tower, spinach pie, lobster sandwich, and lamb kabobs! It was my first lobster sandwich so I don't have much of a baseline but it was delicious. Very dill heavy which I don't mind at all! The spinach pie also surprised us as well! It wasn't too buttery or too cheesey and the spinach made us feel kinda healthy! I think the only thing I would probably not order again was the lamb kabob it was a touch on the dry side. Ended the meal with hazelnut cake and which was such a lovely treat! You gotta save room for dessert when you come here! Unless the dessert displays convince you to eat dessert first then save room for the entree Also from a logistics standpoint point there was plenty of parking here on a relatively busy Sunday afternoon. I went here for lunch yesterday and decided to order something different. (I always get their kobideh). I ordered the Saffron Chicken and oh boy! It is so delicious and very hearty. You'll taste turmeric, celery and all the other aromatics that is used. The serving is also huge. The egg was hot, cheese was melty and the biscuit was light and fluffy and tasted as though it was prepared with freshly stone ground flour! The presentation was a bit "deconstructed", so eating it in your hands might be a tad messy, but it was SO good. We also shared an order of corned beef hash, prepared exactly how grandma used to make it! Not the best Greek food I've ever had but still good. We also got an almond croissant for dessert. We weren't able to try their other desserts although they looked delicious. The croissant that we got looked amazing but just tasted...fine. Trader Joe's makes a much better almond croissant that I'd recommend over there's. The croissant part was good but the filling wasn't. It had an odd texture and not enough almond flavor. It'd be better if they just used almond paste. Either way, I'd skip it. Otherwise the service was good and the restaurant area was clean. Came here for lunch and had mixed opinions. I was seated right away and the waitress was very nice. I ordered a lamb gyro with a garden salad. I waited about 15 minutes for it to come out. I believe she may have been working alone at the tables. There were several that were covered in dirty dishes and she was doing everything. The gyro was ok, but was dripping in juices out of the bottom of the tin foil it was wrapped in. The salad was very good. I noticed they grow tomatoes outside so I think they were fresh in the salad. I looked at their desserts in the displays but held off on buying. $2.25 for one cookie seemed a bit too much, for me at least. I may go again as there were many dishes I wanted to try. Where can I go for lunch on a Sunday at 3 pm? Not very many options around town. Went skipped around to a few restaurants, but they were either closed at 2 pm, closing at 3 pm, serving only snacks and drinks at 3 pm, or just simply closed. On our way back to our car, I noticed that Saffron was open. We decided that's were we'd have lunch. A huge plus for the restaurant is its ample parking situation! There are parking spots in front of and behind the restaurant. We were warmly greeted by the male host and the servers were prompt and very friendly. The restaurant, itself, could you a makeover. I ordered the chicken and shrimp skewer dish served with saffron rice and grilled veggies. The dish was good and plentiful (very generous portions), rather than exceptional. Hit & Miss Saffron is across the street from the Gaillard, the large performing arts center. The place has a bit of an industrial feel with cement floors and lots of hard surfaces and cooler cases. It doesn't really feel very inviting. There is a pleasant outdoor area as well. Our server was nice. We started with some very nice she-crab soup and a good eggplant mirza which was a little too spicy. We moved on to the very good chicken fesenjoon. We also had a shrimp curry which was only OK. One person in our party of 4 had to wait several minutes for her entree to come out after the rest of us had ours. That's a kitchen glitch that shouldn't happen. I'm not sure if it was home-made or came from a can, but there was nothing wrong with it. The biscuit was ok. It was tender and moist, but no butter or jam was offered with it. I'm just a fan of variety, so this place hit the spot. I ordered the grape leaf appetizer which was huge. There were 8-10 little stuffed guys for me me to try.
