What a hidden treasure!!! The only reason this restaurant did not have lines out of the door is because of its off-the-beaten path location! It's located in the courtyard of a residential/commercial building area and proved to be an oasis!!!! We were staying in Long Beach (10/12/2024) to attend the Antojo Hispanic Food show (10/13-14). It was time to have dinner and I turned to Yelp! for a nearby suggestion. Saffron Mediterranean was one of the best recommendations I have found in my many years of using Yelp! This is an unpretentious little, primarily take-out place with a table for six inside and a few tables for 12-16 more, but here you will find some of the BEST and MOST DELICIOUS food if you're in the mood for Mediterranean cuisine. I have never had such flavorful kabobs in my 72 years of life. I chose a double skewer plate with chicken and lamb. Both meats were grilled to perfection, tender and succulent, and each of the five-piece portions of meat weighed well over 8 ounces. Plates come with grilled vegetables ... onion, zucchini, red bell pepper, and carrot ... a helping of white or seasoned brown rice and choice of two additional accompaniments, which includes 10 or 12 different hummuses, salads, dolmas, eggplant, and more. Plus a pita, garlic sauce, and spicy red pepper sauce. All this for just $28.99 (a single chicken kabob skewer plate is $15.99. And worth every penny!! Chef-Owner Kaya took time to come out from the kitchen and chat with us about our meal, his background, and the homemade spice blend he uses to marinate his meats. I have never enjoyed a kabob seasoned with such an amazing combination (which includes the mysterious flavor of lavender). Kaya was kind enough to share a couple of tablespoons of his blend for me to try at home. I also took back to our condo a watermelon salad ($9.99), which is also a MUST HAVE! A very generous serving of chilled melon drizzled with fresh pomegranate juice, sprinkled with a couple of tablespoons of chopped fresh mint, and accented with feta cubes. The combination is a definite 5-stars on its own. Everything about Saffron Mediterranean is worthy of attention. Opening a restaurant in California in the 2020s is a risky venture. Doing it without advertising is an even greater challenge. If you have the occasion to be in Downtown Long Beach, CA, and have the least bit of interest in Mediterranean cuisine, you really need to keep this place in business. Saffron Mediterranean is a genuine treasure that I cannot more strongly recommend. If I could post a bonus points recommendation, believe me, this is one of a select handful of places I would do so. Was shocked that this place didn't show up higher in the list when I searched "lunch" in downtown Long Beach. Hands down some of the most delicious and home cooked style Mediterranean food I've had. Seriously haven't had this kind of comfort food since I went to my buddy's house as a kid and his grandmother made us food from the old country. Got the beef plate and everything from the hummus, to the salad and protein were spiced and cooked to perfection. Even the fries were in that fine state of firm and soft that you could still taste the potato but also have confidence in the dipping strength when submerged into ketchup. Pita bread was initially too thick for my liking but then I started pulled them apart and making little pocket pitas for the beef and covering in the amazing green pesto sauce. Also had to get the stuffed grape leaves and those were very well made with great seasoning and a very tight wrap that kept all the contents inside even after the initial half bite. Hands down will be coming back when visiting downtown Long Beach. Outdoor patio had great seating for us and our dog. Also was a fan of their eggplant dip, zingy zesty and a little smoky. Their mezze platter provides a taste of everything: grape leaves, 2 or 3 different kinds of hummus, eggplant dip, olives, parsley salad, pita ($20) Ambiance: a few tables inside, and patio seating on their small patio, facing a fairly quiet courtyard. Not sure how much interior seating they have. They are tucked away from the street, so not much foot traffic. Service was attentive and excellent. They have some flavored house made lemonades that are nice. No beer/wine. Would like to try the fennel and orange salad next time.
