I don't even like mustard or pickles, but the employee suggested I try it with cheese, and I'm so glad I listened. It was so good 10/10. Friendly staff. I had the veggie mozzarella sandwich and found it to be ok but not great. The bread was very soft, and I find caprese sandwiches are best with bread that has a bit of crunch to it. The tomatoes were colorless and flavorless. It's a pet peeve of mine when restaurants serve unripe tomatoes, but for a sandwich like this it's even more disappointing. The pesto added a great flavor though which helped a lot. I like that they have Stubborn Soda in their machine. read more

The sandwiches are packed to the brim with meat, cheese, and veggies. The roast beef especially has double to triple the amount I usually expect. A local favorite for good reason. Came by with two friends to grab dinner and. let the rain subside. I checked out the meatloaf sub and it was perfect. The soft roll, the hot meatloaf topped with cheese and sauce. Yum. My friends had the lasagna (always good, he always gets that) and the pasta with mushrooms. Two of us purposely left room for the carrot cake which is fabulous with its cream cheese frosting. Not made in house but it's made locally and is to die for. Communication is key. If you do not do any kind of substitutions please just say it. I ordered a sandwich that had three different kinds of meat. I do not like salami so I asked for extra ham instead. The lady politely told me yes and at the same time added a charge for extra meat. I guess she didn't realize I could see the itemized charges on the other side of the register When I saw this, I told her I do not want EXTRA meat. I just want more ham instead of the salami. She asked another lady who was going to make the sandwich and she gave me a total attitude and ended up saying ok. Of course when I get my sandwich there is no salami and nothing in place of it. They even left out the cheese. I also requested NO mayo and she mixed my chopped onion in mayo. I hope you people find your peace in life. Thanks guys. As I lay here in pain with a food baby in my belly in my hotel bed, I must share my experience that I just had at Modica's Deli. Let's jump in, despite my inability to even stand at this moment... Ambiance - You can dine indoors or outdoors. There's room for small and large groups, though the interior is smaller than the outdoor dining area. Food - I'm carrying a food baby, and it's Smokin Joe's! I was hesitant to get a pastrami sandwich that had marinara on it, but it works! I got the 8-inch which was more than enough food. I can't even imagine getting the 16-inch. I also got a piece of cake to-go and holy moly it was a huge slice! I couldn't even get through half of it before having to throw in the towel. The chocolate suicide cake is no joke. Delicious, but bring a few friends if you want to finish it. Service - The guy who I interacted with was very friendly and helpful. Everyone seemed friendly and it was a good vibe overall from the staff. Overall, this was a great, but extremely filling meal. I have no complaints other than I am bed-ridden and can't seem to awake from my food coma. Would highly recommend trying the Smokin Joe's, or one of their other tasty sandwiches! We were STRUGGLING to find a decent, not super expensive nor super lowly rated restaurant near the Long Beach Convention Center that was open for dinner. Thank god for Modica's Restaurant & Deli! In comparison to everything else in the area, super affordable and huge portions too! You can easily order an entree and split it with someone if you're not super hungry. Service was quick and courteous and helpful in answering our questions. We got the: 1) 16" Italian Sausage Sandwich: -It was generously slathered in spicy marinara sauce with cheese on an Italian roll. -Bread was nice, warm, and soft. Sausage had a distinct peppery taste. -It was a ginormous sandwich to be honest and we split it with 2 people and if we had refrigeration or storage at the hotel room, we could have easily taken it back with us instead of scarfing it down there. Way more than enough for 2 portions to be honest. 2) Mediterranean (I think) Dip: -This was on their Happy Hour special menu I believe. -It came with some sundried tomatoes, pesto, grated parmesan, and dip with 8 pieces of garlicky pita chips. -Great appetizer! This place is a must try in Long Beach! I got the spinach tortellini with their homemade pesto sauce - I love their pesto sauce!! Their portions are also very big and it comes with bread for every plate so I always have some to take home. I also got a side of meatball and sausage and everything was so flavorful. You can't beat the price since most of their pasta dishes are under $15. Parking is street parking and metered so might be challenging during weekends but I never had issues. I went on Monday night so it wasn't busy at all but still had a good crowd. There's plenty of seating inside and even more outside. Can't wait to be back and try their sandwiches! read more

Truly by the name (modicas.com), there is a restaurant inside serving a few Italian pasta dishes, but the locals know it as a deli and there were plenty of people ordering takeout. I came in from a walk on a Wednesday afternoon, and decided to get a couple of sandwiches to go. You order and pay at the front counter, and it took about 10 minutes for both sandwiches to be made and nicely wrapped. Meatball sub with provolone (8" 10.95+0.75) - 4 pork meatballs on a decent Italian roll that holds up well to the sauce. The meatballs were good, coarsely ground with not too much bread crumbs. medium size. Heart Attack Jack (8" 9.95) - very neat, well crafted sandwich. I love how they use romaine lettuce leaf to give it a beautiful crunch. The same italian roll is soft enough not to make it too hard to eat, but did start to disintegrate a bit the next day. It's a beautifully crafted sandwich, and tasted good (amount of meat was OK). read more
