The lady who took my order was so generous and gave me the lowdown on all the exotic flavored ice creams. After many samples, it was difficult to pick one flavor. She recommended going halves for one scoop. I selected the Gulkand (sweet with real rose petals) and the saffron. Creamy!! This perfect after meal snack was less than $3. They are located in a new mini mall with tons of free parking. Saffron Spot hits the sweet spot! There aren't many saffron ice creams around but why not find it in Little India? I recommend starting off with their Ice Cream Falooda. $4.99 four mini ice cream scoops of your choice on a bed of noodles with rose syrup and takmaria (basil seeds). My ice cream choices were: rose, mawa, rajbhag, and sitaphai. Out of the four my tongue recognizes the rose flavor because of the smooth flower flavor. The others tasted milky and sweet. Second choice was the Kulfi Falooda with Saffron flavor $4.99. Kulfi served on a bed of noodles with rose syrup and takmaria. It's the same ingredients like the ice cream but they boil the mixture. So that it makes it smoother than the ice cream. This was my favorite choice because this tasted better. Both Falooda's had that sweet touch to it because it was topped with condense milk. Small joint, bar seating. You sit on these round high tool colored seats. The workers here were friendly and the guy who served us the ice creams, had no problem answering our questions about whats in those unheard of flavors. I have never knew there was such a thing as Indian Ice cream. Who knew?? You learned something every day on Yelp. Earlier this summer, Abby A. organized an ice cream testing where I missed out because of a prior engagement. I only decided to take an another look only after I read Judy H.'s review last month about the place. It was close to some of my favorite dining spots in the city, so I had to make a detour to check it out. The city of Artesia is constantly adding new plazas every chance they can get. I was thrilled when an empty lot that was sitting there for decades finally had a movement of getting the place developed for a brand new shopping plaza. Within walking distances to some of the popular Indian hot spots, this plaza is still trying to catch on with the patrons who visit Little India every weekend. It's slow, but I think with a few more good restaurants, it will be busy. This small ice cream shop...and emphasized on the word "small"... is next door to a kabob place that looked like an Indian fast food joint. Their display counter is a little tricky like Mashati Malone where they have the weird names of the flavor on one side and the normal flavors on the other end. I figured with the normal flavors being too common, I took a risk on two flavors I had never tried before. I took a shot at Kulfi and Chikoo. With a name of like those two for flavors, it was asking for death wish. Abby A. described those flavors very well in her review. Kulfi is like milky cream flavor with a dash of spice that I have not tasted before. There is a Cinnamon-like taste to that flavor. It can get really gingery in my taste buds and had a weird dose of sweet taste to it. Chikoo is a fruit that can be found in many parts of Asia. When I wikipedia the word, apparently it also popped up as "Sapodilla" which was commonly known in other parts of the world. Anyhoo, the flavor of Chikoo was like a brownie or a butterscotch taste, even though it came from a fruit. I don't know how else I can described these two exotic flavors, but they sell them in containers for purchase to take home. There are also servings of shaved ice, juice, and latte drinks that can be ordered here. There was a zing I got before I left with the ice cream, each of those exotic flavors cost around $3 each. So it's not that cheap at all. Don't waste your time on the ordinary flavors or the hookish bright colors of the ice cream. If you really need to spend it, please check out their exotic sections of different flavors. You won't regret it. I would have gladly take home a box or two of their special ice creams, but on a very cold day, it was not wise. I'll have to come back again next time to check out their Rose and Saffron flavors. My first time having Indian ice cream! My friend wanted to try this spot so we stopped by after lunch. Located in a small plaza, this shop is easy to find- and the interior is super colorful! I've never had kulfi before, so my first time left a really good impression. It's thicker in consistency and so delicious! I would definitely recommend it, not exactly sure what flavor it is but it's so damn good! It is more expensive to make, so we were only able to have one scoop in our bowl of four. We ordered a flood which consists of four mini scoops on a bed of noodles with rose syrup and takamaria. We got the kulfi, lychee, rose, and one other flavor. The pistachio was not that good, so I would stay away from that. Other than that, the flavors were so yummy! Great first experience trying Indian ice cream- kulfi is bomb! We went to Saffron spot today and what sad service from Lana. we ordered 8 ice creams one saffron milk. My husband tried the milk but it was sour!!!! He nicely asked lana to change it and she was rude saying its not her problem. Saffron Spot is an Indian style ice-cream place in the Little India Village food court that also hosts Kabab Corner, Tangy Tomato and some more AYCE Indian buffet places in the heart of the Pioneer strip in Artesia. I've passed by Saffron Spot many times when visiting the AYCE buffets here but have not stopped by as I don't have the capacity for ice-cream after stuffing myself silly at the AYCE buffet. A couple of days ago I finally bought a Groupon for Saffron Spot and landed here with a friend to try it out. The ice-cream flavors at Saffron Spot as definitely unique. I'm not sure if I've seen these flavors anywhere else here and even back home you will have to look for these in specialty ice-cream parlors. Some of the unique flavors on offer include sitaphal (sugar-apple), chikoo (sapodilla), lychee, jackfruit, rose, tuti-fruti, rajbhog, gulkand (rose petals) and saffron. Flavors keep rotating so you may not find all these available at the same time but definitely try to get one of these unique flavors when visiting Saffron Spot. During my visit I got the ice-cream falooda ($4.99) which has four mini scoops of ice-cream on a bed of vermicelli noodles and soaked tukmaria (basic seeds) doused in rose syrup. My friend got a scoop of saffron and rajbhog each ($4.75). The serving size is decent. It's not too small nor is it overflowing out of the cup. I was expecting the ice-cream to taste weak, icy and grainy like you get back home but here it is nice and creamy. The texture is a bit gloopy but its way short of the pounded texture of Turkish ice-cream. Flavors are strong but don't expect the intense flavors that you would get at Saffron and Rose the Iranian ice-cream place in Westwood. Overall I liked the ice-cream taste and texture. The ice-cream falooda on the other hand was way too sweet. The rose syrup doused on the noodles and tukmaria completely overpowers the ice-cream taste and all that you get in each bit is this deep sweet taste. Normally I would have not minded this at all but I guess I've started appreciating less sweet deserts so I ended up not liking this very much. I don't think I will get it again, but if you are visiting you should try it at-least once. Price-wise I thought it was pretty reasonable. I guess I will have to keep some space for the ice-cream at Saffron Spot when visiting AYCE buffets at Little Indian Village as I liked what I got and plan to keep coming back periodically. read more

So I went to this place coz I have always been a fan of faloodah ice creams and I have not see it much. I was very clear I ll take one faloodah but just needed to figure out which one they would recommend. They recommended malai kulfi faloodah and so I ordered that. In the picture it was shown a good quantity on a plate but what I got was a smaller one in plastic plate/cup. The noodles in it did not seem fresh as they were hard. I liked their kulfi for sure but for $6 the quantity and taste for kulfi faloodah did not sound right. I might be willing to give this joint another try with another one of their popular one which is in a glass. Wow! I am by no means a connoisseur of Indian desserts, but this place was so delicious. The young lady working at the front desk was very sweet and was so helpful while I was just bombarding her with questions and requests for samples of all of the flavors that I had never heard of. I am not sure how I feel about the Saffron Spot to tell you the truth. It's the combination of, it deserves 3 stars for it's originality and exotic ice cream flavors, but I am giving it 2 because the taste of each didn't really live up to the names of the ice creams, and I didn't even know what half of them meant. Literally, I sampled the entire display, and I only liked maybe 4 flavors which were Pista (pistachio), Lychee, Mango, and Safodil (milk). I am not sure what the hype is about Mawa, but it tasted like cinnamon+spice+milk to me, but not in a good way. I personally would not recommend this flavor to anyone, especially because it costed a little more also. The rose really did taste like real frozen rose petals, and I am not sure if that's a good thing either. The chocolate and strawberry were the two flavors that actually tastes conventional, because even the vanilla, was "Indian vanilla". This place is tucked away in the back of a small shopping centre near Downtown Artesia. Parking was ample on a Friday afternoon though which was nice. When my friend and I walked in there, we didn't get much of a greeting even though there wasn't anyone else in there. The weird thing, was that as soon as we walked in, they were playing some Banda/Mexican type music. Which is strange, considering this place is in little India and their ice cream flavored caters to many Indian clientele. Who knows? Maybe the people working there are latino... But anyways, the girl gave us samples to try. The ones I tried were good. Can't remember the first one but I know I tried mango and liked it. I need to try all the rest of them. The one thing that bothered us the most was the fact that the older lady in the back was staring at us most of the time. Went to an Indian Ice Cream and Shaved Ice tasting at Saffron Spot today. Thank you Abby A for organizing the event ...Paul and I had a great time. Up until today I hadn't tasted Indian Ice Cream or Shaved Ice....it was great! Very flavorful and great texture. I tried the saffron, lycee, rose, banana cardamom, and mango flavors....WOW, they were all so good! We also sampled the rose falooda which was fantastic but a bit too sweet for me. (My own preference though, I am sure most folks would just love it!) Rose falooda is rose milk served with noodles, basil seeds and ice cream and it is really great. We also sampled small bits of various kulfi flavors which were my favorite of the day....mango, pistachio, plain, and saffron i think....all were awesome. Finally we sampled the Malai Gola which is shaved ice served with syrup, nuts, and cream....WOW, so fantastic. Everything was so good.....sweet, savory, bold flavors and beautiful presentation. We loved everything. The owner loves what she does and it was obvious by how detailed her explanations of everything were. I really want to go back to Saffron Spot soon! read more

[i.e. jackfruit, mango, rose, saffron, etc.]. Patient staff, took the time to explain the flavors to me. i was able to try a bunch of samples without feeling rushed and limited. there was probably about 20 flavors. like I mentioned I tried a bunch of flavors but what I liked most was mango and coconut. the coconut actually had shredded coconut inside and let me tell you this generally people put like the shredded coconut flakes but I honestly think they used a real coconut and then shaved out the coconut meat! it was thicker in texture and looked like real coconut which was a real surprise and made me praise the quality of their ice cream. I got one scoop of ice cream but they were willing to do half a scoop of each. Good little spot to stop by for a quick dessert. Would recommend after a heavy meal because it has the flowery taste and tastes much lighter than the normal ice cream. They have a bunch of flavors that are unique so you can ask for all the samples you want. I think I seriously sampled every one of them. I would recommend the Saffron as my default which has hints of lavender and other flowery goodness and I also got the paan (green color). all of them basically taste flowery but in different ways? haha can't really pinpoint differences. We probably sampled more than half of their ice creams and these were our favorites: 1. Saffron Silk (Saffron, Rose and Pistachios) 2. Gulkand- Rose with rose petals. This has a stronger flavor than their plain Rose. 3. Pista Saffron Kulfi- Saffron Ice cream with condensed milk, chopped pistachios chopped into cubes. To me, this was only a so-so experience. I tried a few flavors and none of them really wow-ed me -- to the point that I wasn't even sure of what I was going to order. I got two flavors -- one that was a burnt caramel-like taste and a unique fruit one. The caramel one was really rice and I couldn't finish it. The other was better. Found out about this place a while ago. Today I was craving ice cream and decided to give it a try. After sampling several ice cream flavors I finally decided. Gulkand ice cream: - no idea what Gulkand was until I looked it up. It is a "sweet preserve of rose petals from Pakistan and North India" (yay for Wiki) - pretty sweet - never knew rose petals could be so tasty - occasional sugar crunch Inside bar seating. Two tables outside for high stool seating. The inside can get stuffy. Outside can get rowdy with the plaza music. There is no equilibrium. It only comes in the joy in each bite of ice cream. If you check-in with Yelp it's 10% off your purchase. There is currently a Yelp Deal of pay $5 for $10 worth of Saffron Spot goods. The latter is ideal with 2-3 people. Overall, great place to try for unique ice cream flavors. Just note that the ice cream isn't as smooth as other places. I don't think they make it fresh everyday but at least it didn't have those icicles that form on old ice cream. It's a great way to end your Indian meal in Little India. Why am I all about atmosphere lately? Well, I don't know, but I am. And I loved the style of this little ice cream shop. So colorful and bright and comfortable. My favorites were the mango chili and the fig walnut. But, seriously, they were all good. The owner is very nice and house-proud. And I can't wait to go back and check out the new flavors. read more
