I never review. If I have a problem I generally speak with the manager... today the manager refused to tell me his name! Sag Pizza is an allegorical name for this three week old disaster. It has the ghost of a fantastic pizza joint to compete with, but it has the know-how of LT Burger (very good) to navigate its launch... Let me set the scene: It is 11:39am on a sweltering August Monday and I am bolting through town to grab a bite for my son before I have to drop him at camp at 12:30. We made a special trip into town to grab a slice. On the door it states the restaurant hours - opens at 11:30am. When I arrive, there are a half dozen folks cued up. No problem, I think, these guys just opened a few weeks ago, they are stressed by the short summer season and they want to get it right...By 11:50am, after two employees have stuck there heads out to say 2 minutes, 5 minutes, finally, the "chef" offers the "crowd" garlic knots. One would think that this was an obvious crowd pleaser, but they were cold. While I am antsy to get my kid to camp, I have now spent 10-15 minutes on line, I'm committed. At 12:01pm the door is opened. I notice that the woman (from LT Burger,) who must be the GM, scurries across the restaurant eating a pastry or garlic knot - I hope hers wasn't cold, but what is she doing eating before the first customer is served? My son and I got a couple of slices and we ate mediocre re-heated pizza. No one was offered a free slice, no apology and, certainly, no magic... 24 hours later, as if suffering the Stockholm Syndrome, I am back at 11:45am with my son and, this time, with my daughter too. No line, doors must've opened on time - good sign... We are third on line at the counter to buy slices. As I am waiting, I scan the huge staff and maybe I am being overly critical, but these folks don't have the snap and rhythm of Pizza pros. It seems that most of the staff have been selected from a book of glum people with little service experience (read no customer sercive skill). Ok, too critical, and we got our Pizza with only the hiccup of a rapidly growing line and the chaos caused by no leadership by the restaurant workers. Also, to be fair we only interacted with a few folks. Finally the chef (the garlic knot guy) jumped out to try to organize the crowd. In front of the restaurant is a 6 person table and chairs, though there are no settings. Perhaps it was presumptuous, but my two kids and I sat down at the table with our order. The kids had 4 slices, a water and sprite between them ($23.) Like a hawk the manager flapped a path to us and said we could not sit at this clean empty table. My kids popped up and I apologized, but it "looked like" a "community" table for to-go folks eating a slice - us! He said NO, they are awaitng a permit from the town. This is strange. Why didn't this manager invite us to sit at the counter or at a table? There were about 3-4 small parties seated inside the restaurant. Plenty of empty tables. I told him we are loyal customers! I told him we waited for almost 30 minutes for 3 slices yesterday and we came back again with another family member, even after we weren't offered more than a cold knot (no I don't cruise new restaurants looking for free crumbs!) He told me, "I simply told you cannot sit at the outdoor table." I asked him his name, after all, I am gunning for customer of the week, but he would not divulge... I urge any entrepreneur to visit Sag Pizza, it is a classic example of "yours to loose..." There is huge demand for a good pizza in Sag Harbor. Guess, I am heading back to Baby Moon or La Parmigiana... read more
