As a long time and frequent customer i am sad to say tonight was the WORST experience I've ever had at Sagano. First, we made it very clear that our 13 month old had a SEVERE egg allergy and that the order of chicken fried rice we ordered him had to be cooked separately and to have absolutely no cross contamination since it was a matter of life or death for our baby. So the waitress did exactly what she was supposed to do. She wrote it on the table ticket AND verbalized this to the cook directly in front of us BEFORE he started cooking. At this point we thought everything was going to be great, no concerns as we've seen this occur many, many times before with other guests over the years. Well, he proceeded to lay out the garlic butter, then the noodles, THEN like 5 eggs all over the grill giving NO concerns or recognition that our son literally has a food allergy. That being said, i walked right up to the waitress and she apologized and made his rice in the back separately. So here's when things got worse. Our son was not liking the fire (which we knew would be a concern considering the type of restaurant Sagano is) however, the cook had ZERO consideration that our baby was screaming his head off. At this point both myself and my wife were standing up with him AWAY from the table. After the first initial flame everything was alright, EXCEPT when the cook said "ohhh baby want more fire" then proceeded to light up the onion and made the flame larger than normal (based on the many times we've visited this restaurant). My wife said to the cook, "I don't think he wants more fire." Our baby continuing to scream due to the scary fire, the cook ONCE AGAIN said "More fire?" And PROCEEDED ONCE AGAIN to flip the onion on its side and lit up a huge flame again! While trying to de-escalate the situation, the cook continued to escalate the situation by continuing to re-light the fire. The chef was laughing at his own actions and my wife told him it wasn't funny. At this point my wife was fed up with the disregard our cook had to our baby screaming and packed up her stuff and took him outside while i waited at the table for the rest of the food to be served so i can pay and leave. Meanwhile, everyone at our table and surrounding tables were staring. I got up and asked the lady at the front desk about how tipping worked and how i wanted none of my tip to go to the cook, but instead to our waitress because she expressed concern to the entire situation. Overall, Sagano is a great place to eat but tonight showed us that they might need to retrain their chefs to be more diligent to customers requests and concerns and understanding social cues (baby crying with fire, so not to continue to escalate the issue) read more

I was craving sushi. So I stoped in Sagano for a a few rolls. I usually go for hibachi so this was my first time on the sushi / restaurant side. I got Sweet Potato Roll w/Avo and an Avocado roll. They have sushi chefs, and the waitress was attentive. My sake tiki was good. Kind of sweet. The sushi was made fresh and delicious. Perfect lunch. read more

It's a in a little shopping mall.. but the food is really good. The only disadvantage is you have to wait a long time for a personal table.. otherwise they sit you at the grill.. they should let you have a choice on whether or not if you want to sit with others. Typical Hibachi place. Dinner and a show. The food I had was a mixed bag. Excellent Pot Stickers served with mediocre dipping sauce. Not sure how that happens. Fried rice was okay if a bit heavy on the oil Steak was cooked perfect, the included dipping sauces were pretty good. Others at the table remarked that their proteins were also cooked really well. Service: The place was obviously jumping so I want to cut the server some slack, but even so would rate it as poor. IIRC the only time they checked for drink refills was when most had finished their meals. I would recommend Sagano for an event because it's dinner and a show, but for casual dining would spend my money elsewhere. read more

We were looking forward to celebrating my daughters 3 year birthday, and have never been treated this bad by our waitress ever here. I have been coming here since it opened as a small sushi bar with owners being the sushi chef and hostess, but today had been the worst experience since. The waitress felt annoyed when I was ordering sushi as she repeated that she didn't know the Japanese names. Then regarding the sake she couldn't tell me the grades. I was looking for junmai ginjo and she just literally threw the drink menu at me and said I have no idea. She then said that she has been here 4 years and nobody told her she needed to know sushi or sake. Nigiri pieces are half the meat and twice the rice I remember when they first opened. Plus they stick a fob of fake wasabi inside that over powers the delicate fish. Came here for dinner last night and it was very sub par. I came specifically for the sushi and I was NOT impressed what so ever.. it was just bland as could be. I had to douse it in eel sauce and spicy mayo to get any kind of flavor and even then it was just ok. I ordered the Sumo roll and Dynimite roll (which was the best of the two) and my friend had the Yummy yummy roll which we split and were both really excited about, however, ended up extremely disappointed and I believe the Spicy California. Decent sushi for the Flint area. There are not many sushi places in the Flint area. Sagano is a huge place near-ish the Genesee Valley Mall and one side of the restaurant is their Hibachi grill experience and the other is for the "normal" restaurant. My friends and I ordered a few things: * Diet Roll - vegetable tempura roll with avocado * Sweet potato roll * Two pieces of tamago (egg nigiri) Overall: the food was great. Prices are a lot cheaper than some sushi places I've been to and we even got an extra roll and also two pieces of sushi we didn't order. We aren't sure why, but we didn't question it! In addition to the rolls, you get soup and salad for free and your choice of miso or clear broth soup (I chose the later) and salad with sesame or ginger dressing (I ordered the former). The service was also great despite her having to repeat herself to confirm our order (just ensured we got everything we ordered). We tried this place for the first time last night. We had a bit of a wait, but were able to snag a table in the bar area and have a drink. Our waitress was great. Super attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Our chef was good, but a little quiet. He did squirt me in the face with water, which was all in good fun, but I really wish he hadn't squirted it right in my face. I wear contacts and getting water in my eyes can be uncomfortable. There aren't many sushi places in Flint, so was happy to find this place in town. One side is sushi and the other side is the steakhouse. I sat at the sushi bar. Ambiance is a bit dated, but I liked the Japanese wooden menu that hung behind the sushi chefs. I also liked that they hung their thank you cards from their customers in the entryway. The place felt a little dirty/sticky. Other than that, the sushi was good and fish fresh. I liked the strong flavored miso soup, too. Service was polite and attentive. I walked into this restaurant tonight and received an unsavory welcoming from what seemed to be the owner or someone of significant authority. She looked my friend and I up and down with an expression of distaste and asked us "how many". We told her two, then she proceeded to claim they'd closed. Meanwhile it was 7:20pm and the front door says they close at 8:30pm on Sunday's. I politely asked her why the door stated 8:30, she shrugged her shoulders, fanned her hand in the direction of the door and said they close earlier because of COVID, whilst again looking us up and down. Our entire interaction with this woman was off putting and to be honest, simply hurtful but then something dawned on me. The distaste on her face resembled some I've seen on people whose candidate just lost. We have faces closer to the new VP. Don't say I didn't warn you. read more

Went for dinner last night (3/10/23), had 5:30 reservation set up a few days prior. Ordered the swordfish habachi and my mom got the shrimp habachi. Have been here multiple times before and loved it...but last night was disappointing. Everything was just not up to par as far as flavor goes. I don't know if it was just that the chef didn't put enough of the sauce/butter/seasoning in, or what but it definitely was lacking. Sad, because I really consider going there a treat...but not this time. The place was not packed by any means, but was EXTREMELY loud. I get it that the chefs try to make the 'show' fun, and for birthdays they sing, but I have to say that a few of them were just plain obnoxiously LOUD. I went to the one in Fenton for NYE, and it was much better. Usually Sagano's is a 4 to 5 star dining experience, however, my latest visit was surprisingly disappointing. To be fair, it was the lunch rush. However, that isn't a very good excuse. I would have rather waited longer than having received rushed sushi. It defiantly tasted rushed, and was crammed in the to go box quite violently it appeared. The Eel Sauce tasted not great, and considering it was on all of my sushi the sushi's flavor was greatly degraded. You could tell the sushi was rushed, as my nigiri was definitely over wasabi-ed, and crammed into the box next to the pickled ginger, making the flavor leech over. Considering the amount of times I've visited Sagano, this was quite a shock. I hope that this was an isolated incident and my next visit will be of the caliber I expect. read more

So I come to Saganos often! The food is good and one of the healthiest places around, despite the HEAVY GARLIC BUTTER! But today is my last day being 25 years old! I decided to treat Myself. I was seated by a lady with purple contacts & black hair and my order was taken! Salmon, no chicken in my fried rice with a shrimp allergy, I added a to-go order similar! The cooks come over to start cooking and says both my orders will be cooked in the back. I said I'm eating in and have a separate order to go. The cook starts laughing & saying he don't know. So I get up and ask the lady who took my order why is both my orders being cooked as to-go's. The lady with the purple contacts! She says To-go orders are cooked in the back. I say, yes, I understand but I'm eating here and the to-go order is another order. She gets rude and says "to go orders are made in the back Idk what you you are talking about" she then steps to the person behind me in line and says "can I help you" just dismisses me and I as I said "ma'am" She said " i don't know what you're talking about take It up with the manager!" So at this point before I lose my cool. I stepped behind the person in line to talk to the manager I explain one time to the manager that I had a to go order and sit in order. She said she put my food on the tray to be cooked and the to go order was cooking in the back. So she goes and ask the cook about my food & now all of a sudden he understands what I was saying. I've been to Sagano a few times and overall the has been okay. The recent service however has been a little less than stellar. The environment is usually clean and well kept. Communication with some of the staff can be strange and uncomfortable. Some of them have made weird homophobic jokes in the past and waiting for a table can be unclear as there sometimes isn't a person there to seat you at times (Last time it took 15 until someone showed up). The food can be a hit or miss. We were there recently and the fish smelled old and had a weird taste to it to the point were I couldn't finish it. The time before that the sushi was fine. It wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible either. Overall, it's a gamble to what you'll get at this place but it will more than likely never be more than exceptional, and that's okay. read more

Visiting from out of town and in all my life I have never met such a rude and undeserving waitress. She is tall heavy set medium brown hair with a leopard print mask. From the start she had an attitude when bringing drinks and utensils and messed that simple order up. Never did she check on us if we needed anything. The chef though was awesome. Good temperament and wonderful entertainment. We tipped him of course as he was well deserving of it. Now we didn't tip the waitress of course. And she had the nerve to say thank you.
