Took our dog in on a sunday because her eye was bothering her and we thought maybe she had a foxtail, they kept the dog a few hours, put dye in her eye and said nothing was in there, sent us home with some drops . 5 days later after a lot of pain and a very infected eye , our regular vet pulled a giant foxtail out of my poor dogs eye. We had to go to emergency at 2am for our 16 year old baby girl. We've never used emergency before never needed to. Sage took us in right away. The tech was so sweet and kind to us. We didn't need to wait long at all before our girl was seen. Dr. Jaiyin Liu was awesome! She was extremely thorough and explained everything we needed to do to care for our girl. Empathy, kindness and professional in every way. The price was way less than we expected for an emergency, injection and meds. Thank goodness this is close by. Well done! read more

It took over 3 hours to do an eye pressure test. They kept him in a kennel for 2+ hours of that to do a test that takes 10 minutes to perform. Our dog was stressed and whining the entire time which exacerbated his eye pressure/pain further. Please work on hospitality. Only the front desk was kind, empathetic, and friendly. The vet and techs were very cold unfriendly and worst of all, not helpful. SAGE gave nothing but excuses on next steps and told us to figure it out/do it ourselves. During a time of duress and worry SAGE only added to the stress. If you need an Emergency Vet, please check out VEG. They called UC Davis, sent the information over, and sent us on our way. We are never returning to a SAGE facility. read more

Updated review & removing one star because of lack of communicating important information. Let me start by saying that the staff here is great, they truly care about every animal that comes through their doors and the treatment of their patients is top notch. I would still absolutely recommend them. That being said, I have found that they are so used to caring for animals that they have completely forgotten that the general public is not. I wish they treated every pet parent like they're first time owners, so- this next part is for them. I had to bring my cat back to their facility to have a major surgical procedure done. I have never had an animal that has had anything more than a spay/neuter done before. So when they sent me the aftercare instructions just hours before I was supposed to pick him up, I was not informed or prepared that I would need to somehow keep him in a space with no furniture or low windows to prevent him from jumping up/down. Cue me having to absolutely scrambled to find the XXL dog crate I needed to keep him on bedrest for the next 3-4 weeks. At no point in the THREE days they had him for this surgery did anyone mention the temporary living situation he needed to be in (this includes during the surgery consultation.) I had to drive over 90 minutes each way to go get this kennel day of but had I known I needed it 3 days prior, I would have been able to order a less expensive one and just have it shipped to me. It was already an incredibly stressful situation and this only added on. About 2 weeks later it was time check up and refill a prescription, the bottle says to call 24 hours in advanced but when you call, the menu asks you to go online and do it. So, I go online to their exact location's website and a pop-up appears to refill prescriptions. Turns out- it's through a 3rd party, which I have no issues with BUT that is not communicated on the website and it tells me they actually need up to 72 hours so I rescheduled my cat's check up I order to not have to wait around and stress him out more. At the check up, I opt to mention that I also need to pick up his prescription... they tell me they don't have anything in the system. I inform them that I went online but they tell me I need to tell the surgery department upstairs about the refill because they're the ones that prescribed it. Okay- fine. I go upstairs for his check up and stop at reception before we're seen to relay the message. Now they are looking at me like I'm crazy and tell me it's the downstairs department that refills meds... I politely tell them that I went online, followed all the instructions and I just need his meds filled ASAP because it's a drive to get to their facility and I didn't want to stress out my recovering cat even more by having to wait for the med. She tells me they'll get it figured out and I go into the check up. We're done about 20 minutes later (went great by the way, again- everyone there is awesome) and I check back in for the meds status. They have me go take a seat. I end up being there any extra 30 minutes and my cat is absolutely beginning to come unglued at this point so now *I* am starting to get upset because this was the exact situation I was trying to avoid. Finally get the meds and they want to charge me over double ($100 for a 10 day supply) of what it said online it was going to be. Only then am I informed that they are not a prescribing pharmacy and I could have gone through chewy or CVS or a pet pharmacy for the refill at much lower cost... luckily I have 3 days left so I ask for it to be sent to my local Costco, they send it off right in front of me and send me on my way. Not 20 minutes later and I've already crossed the bridge do I get a phone call that I actually need to find a special compounding pharmacy for this med DESPITE THAT I TOLD THEM MULTIPLE TIMES THAT I NEED THE COMPOUNDED TABLET. I spend the next 2 hours calling various pharmacies and vet offices, trying to find ANYONE that can do this. I manage to locate one and thankfully all I have to do is give the Sage staff the phone number of the pharmacy and they call it in. Here's the good bits from my original review because it still stands: Every tech, nurse or dr I spoke with was honest about the process, procedures and potential outcome all while being patient and understanding of my emotional state (ya girl was crying the ENTIRE time). They allowed me to come visit him (he was there for a total of 4 nights), took my notes into consideration (he's noise sensitive and a bit anxious so they kept him where it was most quiet), called every 8-10 hours with updates on his condition and answered every single question I had. The night nurses are absolute SAINTS. They loved on my boy, kept him comfortable and calm, and kept me sane through this whole process. read more

Unfortunately we have been here more times than I'd care to admit but they have taken excellent care of our pets each and every time.

If you are going to advertise as a 24 hour emergency vet hospital - you need to actually have 24 hour care available. My dog had a seizure at 5:00 am - and we had no idea if he was dying or what was happening. I tried to call the phone number listed on the website but got an error message when I pressed the option for "emergency: "sorry, we are experiencing a system error". To be clear - this was not my phone - it was their phone system. I live close, so we drove straight over, since they are a 24 hour EMERGENCY vet hospital. When I got there - the door is locked and it says "Please call this number and follow prompts for emergency". I got the same error message. I then started knocking in desperation on the door - finally, someone came out and said "sorry, our vet does not come in until 8:30 am"??!!! Also, when go to their website, and press the "emergency" button, the phone number which pops up is wrong. I ended up driving to the next nearest place - my dog lived - but they are clearly not competent in how they run their operations so I doubt their care can be trusted. read more

I have been here a couple times now for both my dog and cat; most recently my cat. I am not an easy client as I ask lots of questions, slow to understand, and am always low on funds. This place is amazing start to finish. Starting with the receptionist: I received accurate info i didnt even know to ask for, but needed, so my expectations were realistic. The Dr. and tech went above and beyond in addressing all my hypothetical "what ifs" and treatments and testings for the what ifs. After the bill was paid, the tech was explaining the medication which sounded daunting to me. She sensed my anxiety and offered to give Mr Rita (my cat) his first dose. Top notch all the way. Great people. Our previous visit with my dog, sailor, was also great. Not only are they kind and courteous, but they have the knowledge and expertise to guide me through tricky decisions. Sailor had a follow up with the cardiologist and with everyones help and guidance is still doing amazing at 13 yrs old :) I consider myself lucky to have a clinic with these resources, accessibility (open 24 hrs) and skill so close. My BIGGEST REGRET is putting down our beautiful 10 year old family dog at this apathetic facility. The veterinary doctor we dealt with was calm, collected to us when he informed us our options between surgery and euthanization for our dog. HOWEVER, the front desk staff and the assistants have the most shockingly WORST attitudes with no compassion for the owners of the pets. When deciding between surgery and putting down our dog, the staff coerced and YELLED at my mother, putting us in an uncomfortable situation while dealing with the overwhelming stress and despairing grief over our dog. We could not muster the strength to be upset at the staff in the moment, and the staff took full advantage of that. I really wish I had gotten the female staff names because it was purely disgusting and BEYOND UNPROFESSIONAL(!), and this obscene situation had made me feel disappointed that these type of people work in a veterinary emergency clinic. To those female workers who had yelled at my mother who was struggling with grief, YOU should be ashamed of yourself! If you cannot stay calm, supportive and strong for the families of the pets- then you NEED to go to emotional therapy and counseling to be able to continue in this line of work! None of my dogs will ever go to SAGE Emergency Clinic, and I should have known to avoid this place, just by looking at the other reviews and the low star rating. Took my dog there after a fall off the couch.. The vet did a quick examination maybe 5 minutes came out told me my dog had a fractured jaw and needed to be euthanized.... I have had 2 experiences with Sage in the last 3 months and I haven't even stepped foot in the door. Full disclosure, I thought Sage was more of a 'specialty' vet. According to my first call, the receptionist made sure to make me feel like an idiot by correcting me. They are emergency care. I had the opportunity to inquire about having our bulldog fixed and I was told it would cost $5k-$6k. I think she heard my surprise and followed with (snarky tone) 'well, they are ALL board certified surgeons'. Ok, they are not gods and my last vet was board certified and didn't charge even close to that! (We moved). My 2nd experience was last night. My bully was having what looked to be a seizure. The first experience. I called Sage (I remembered they were emergency care) There was clearly panic in my voice and before I could even finish my sentence, the receptionist said 'we're to capacity, you can't bring her here!' I don't care what area/field of the medical industry one works in, compassion and empathy are super important and the people they have working the phones don't see to have either! My bestest buddy was limping and had a very painful right paw. I couldn't find any place in Napa and beyond that could see him. One place had a 3 to 4 hour wait and wouldn't hold an appointment so I'd have to wait then I called Sage in Concord they had an appointment and fortunately a cancellation created a much earlier appointment. Staff was friendly, professional and helpful on the phone and in person too. Dr. Dunning was fantastic. She obviously knows English Bulldog's very well and their common ailments. She took care of my pal O' mine- Norton like he was her own dog. I wish they did regular care too but I'm super happy I can take him there for any urgent issues. I don't know what has happened to Sage--they used to be so skilled, helpful and professional. The receptionist and technicians were very nice and informative, as was the doctor who called to get our ok to sedate. That's where my satisfaction ends. Our dog had swelling, pus and bleeding in the side of her face. They said "looks like small lacerations." They shaved the affected areas. We we're sent home with a cone and sedatives, and told to use Neosporin. They weren't able to specifically identify the problem. We never saw the vet. We sent a picture to our niece, a nurse, who immediately said,"That looks like a 'classic' bad allergic reaction. Did they give her an injection of steroids? Has she been exposed to tree pollen? Did they start her on antihistamines, and antibiotics?" Sadly, yes to pollen and no to steroids. We called Sage and they prescribed antibiotics for "the wound." We bought some Benadryl and hydrocortisone ointment. She's finally showing improvement. It seems the staffing of vets has changed dramatically and there is a shortage of the experience and areas of expertise. This was one of, if not the best, emergency vet in the area. They helped my cat tofu and me out when I called and explained what was going on and they told me to bring him in right away, they were quick with taking him in and i believe Dr. Beverly was the one to help with my cats urinary obstruction. The staff is very patient as I called a couple of times since I was still worried about my cat and they told me to bring him in again to get checked in case he was obstructed. They sent him back to me without charging me again to just check and make sure he was okay. I'm so happy my baby seems to be returning with some energy and they said if I needed anything else to not hesitate to call. Thank you everyone at Sage vet. This place was referred to us after my cat Pepper did not get better with 2 office visits at her primary vet. I initially had a really bad first impression of this place. I was incredibly disappointed that when I dropped her off to be seen that she was not actually seen by a veterinarian until 2 hours after I dropped her off. She was left to their care in a critical condition. She was hypotensive, febrile and weak. The expectations were not clearly set that when I dropped her off she would still not be seen or given treatment for another 2 hours after I dropped her off. If she wasn't going to be seen I would have preferred to have her wait with me in the car or at home in a more calm environment then the vet hospital. I was also receiving infrequent updates regarding her care. What really redeemed this place was Dr. Wong. He texted me after he wasn't able to explain everything over voicemail. He went over her plan of care with Pepper potentially seeing a specialist to test for FIP. However, with further discussion we went over all the possibilities for Pepper's care and treatment and decided that we did everything we could for her. FIP is a deadly disease that she was battling for the past month (FIP only became differential diagnosis 2 days prior). When I asked for a vet to perform an at home euthanasia he gave me three different doctors to chose from. He did an amazing job explaining my options and treatment plan. THANK YOU DR. My 15 year old kitty woke us up at 2 AM with loud, labored breathing and was getting worse through the day. With Covid affecting things so much I didn't want to take a chance she'd be better by nightfall, and hit the phones. Our usual ER go-to in Berkeley was full, same for the next ER go-to. Kitty's regular vet couldn't help because they may have their own Covid exposure to deal with (whoa...) So I took a few minutes out to have a private melt-down, called Sage, and they said they'd get her in. These guys did an absolutely terrific job. They were upbeat and kind and not at all frazzled. They communicated well: made sure I knew how long it may be until kitty was seen, then low long it may be until she was treated, then how long it would be until kitty could go home with me. This took place from about noon to 7:30 PM. It was up to me to go home (about 30 minute drive each way) or find bathrooms (passed time in nearby shopping center I knew had clean ones) but they made sure I knew that in advance, too. It was a bit weird not to talk to the vet in person -- harder to follow -- but the vet was patient and explained the options clearly. He did not push anything on me, gave a low and high estimate and explained the range. I selected the option most likely to help right then and there; which could still be expensive but hey...it's our kitty. As it turned out, kitty needed the lower-end stuff. And when I saw the final bill it was even lower than I expected. Vets and staff are under lots of stress these days. The whole team at Sage did an absolutely wonderful job of not showing it. I don't even know where to start. First of all, this was the worst experience I've had a vet so far. I have two dogs and have been to many vets in the past. One of my dogs had an emergency and I called all my usual vets, ER places I take my dogs to and they were all at full capacity. I was desperate to find a place that could see my dog immediately. And was willing to drive out of my city to do so. The way I was treated by one of the vet techs/assistants was awful. I don't understand how they think it's acceptable to treat paying customers (ones that are spending thousands on their pets) the way the vet tech did. Waited 3 hours to be seen by the vet. The vet was great and knowledgeable. She informed me to leave my dog there to run further exams. So I did. 4 hours went by after I left and I hadn't heard a thing (no call, no text, no way of getting an update about my dog). So I decided to go back to the vet and ask if I could have an update on my dog. The front desk staff was very nice and said they sent a request and someone would come out shortly to give me an update. I sat in the lobby, and about 5 mins later the vet assistant/tech comes out asking for my dog's owner. She's on her cell phone, texting, and has an angry look on her face. She proceeds to tell me that me asking for an update on my dog is taking away from the care of other dogs. That at their ER, they don't call anyone with updates because they don't have the staff to do that. She then tells me my dog is fine and no call or news means good news. I explained to her that it was never communicated to me that I wouldn't get any call/text or news about my dog or that no news means good news. At other ER/ED vets I've visited in the past, they at least call or send a text with an update. She was upset and left. I was not only humiliated (because there were many people sitting in the lobby that heard this) but also felt that my dog was not worthy enough of giving its owner an update after 4 hours. I felt like speaking to the manager right away, but didn't do so in fear that they would rush my dog's care and treat him badly if I did. This happened last week and it's taken me time to process how that day went and how unacceptable the way that vet tech/assistant treated me. I've already began telling everyone I know not to bring their pets here. Why pay to be treated like garbage? I do want to point out that the young man that brought out my dog when he was ready to be picked up was very sweet and caring. I think that was the only reason I managed to feel calm after the horrible experience I had. read more

I do not recommend SAGE in an emergency situation. We were not given adequate information to make an informed decision about our cat. We were told she was dying and we could leave her to be euthanized or take her home. I NEVER wanted my beloved cat to be alone when she died. We thought having her home surrounded by her blankets and toys would be best for her. The security of home may lessen her anxiety and ours. I asked if she was in pain and the attendant said she was not. We were in shock and crying. No other information was given. We could not make an INFORMED DECISION. The people working there should offer to provide ALL information knowing the pet guardians are in shock. SAGE is VERY expensive. Given their price point ($$$$$), they must know people who bring their pets there love their pets and are deeply committed. That was the worst night of my life. We took her home not knowing the tumor would burst and she would be in excruciating pain. Her screams will haunt me my entire life. I wrapped her in her favorite blanket and we rushed her back. Things quickly turned ugly. The doctor on duty blamed us and said to me I should have brought her in sooner. We were in earlier. We are not veterinarians. How dare that woman place blame on us? She showed no empathy or even a minuscule amount of sympathy. She set about killing our beloved cat before our eyes. While that is standard practice, normally the vet allows for a goodbye. She was indifferent. We wanted a piece of her fur. Instead of gently clipping a piece, she grabbed a razor and shaved the fur off her beautiful tail without regard to mutilating her dead body. Would you do that to a human? Cut off the person's hair down to the scalp randomly? No. Our cat was FAMILY. SAGE emergency does not respect that. SENSITIVITY TRAINING is needed and should be required. In case anyone wonders why we did not have her euthanized earlier, we thought they were going to take her away in her carrier and we would not be there to say goodbye and hold her in our arms. We both cry daily over this unnecessarily traumatic death of a loved one. Yes, the sympathy card was a nice gesture. I shudder to think the woman who killed her signed it. I do NOT want her sympathy for causing us such tramna. Their team signed it and I only recognized the veterinarian's signature who had been treating her. In all fairness, he did all he could. He was not on duty the night she died. The woman who helped us select her urn was sympathetic and professional. I appreciated her. We came later as it was not possible to select it that night. We will never forget that night and continue to have nightmares about it. Insensitive people should leave the profession. The team at Sage took great care of our sick kitty. The vet techs were all SO nice and kind to our old man kitty. When we arrived at the emergency the receptionist told us about a 20 minute wait... 2 hours later I was able to secure an urgent care appointment for that evening. I wish that had been recommended from the get-go. Maybe when I called prior to going... maybe when I checked in after an hour of waiting... Only after I heard the the gal mention it to a different Clint did I know they offered those appointments. Downside was there prices are high... but fair for the amazing care they provide. read more

Front desk calling their customers stupid, bitches, etc. One of the front desk ladies said "this one customer was so annoying I wanted to trip her by the door" while I'm waiting in the lobby. Very unprofessional. I'm waiting for my dog in the waiting room feeling uneasy. That is the last thing I need to hear. Please find another emergency center for your pets. read more

My dog Sandy was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure by my vet. At the end of August she had some respiratory distress which SAGE in Concord treated and she returned home. Over the next two months she had periods of great normalcy in function and I had hopes she could go on for some time that way but she then developed more respiratory symptoms on several occasions and was treated again. She seemed to recover from those episodes However on November 1 she was again seen there and euthanasia was advised., I loved the care at SAGE. All of he people were so kind and the vets so skilled. However I wanted her to die at home so they gave me a list of vets that would come to the home. The one we contacted said to text him when we left SAGE and he would meet us at my home. Sandy came home on my lap with her nose out the window of my friends car, When we arrived at home she ran down the stairs and went to her water bowl and drank. The vet arrived and explained the procedure. He then placed her on my lap, On Novembert 1 Sandy crossed the rainbow bridge and she died lying on my lap while I was able to hold and pet her and tell her I loved her.
