Darn! I should've brought a suitcase with me to lug all the dried goods back home with me. With my tiny frame, I was amazed that I carried lentils, rice, chickpeas, and other grains with me. I was even tempted to go for some peanuts too, but got rational at the last stretch. Although the bulk items aren't organic, but with quick turnover and cheap prices, who cares sometimes. I have been going to Sahadi's with my mother since the 80's.....it is an amazing place to visit....because you can taste items...smell.....touch so many spices....nuts..and food items that you would normally never have access to...unless you're a gourmet chef or just someone that really enjoy cooking..... and seeks these things out on a regular basis. Every time I visit Sahadi's....I definitely end up picking up things that I had no intentions of buying..but that's the point of visiting this place... to be taken on some sort of world food journey....and leave excited to try them when you get home!!!.... So many sauces, jams, crackers, cheeses, oils, grains....good lord... you just have to see for yourself.... No matter what... we always leave with huge bags of almonds, cashews, apricots, mixed nuts...and cheese....you must take a stroll to Sahadi's....like this weekend...... ;) read more

I really, REALLY wanted to like Sahadis. But my first attempt after going *all* the way out to Brooklyn was abruptly aborted as I approached, realizing that this place is not open on Sundays. NOW I know that it blatantly states on here that it's not open on Sundays, but I thought I'd throw that in there for the other idiots like me who do not care for details. Second attempt was much more fruitful, and I'm so glad I found this place. I came here mainly for the spices, olives, feta, and to check out the other goodies, and they delivered. First, the hummus here is amazing. It's in the back counter where you get the other prepared food, and can ask for a quart or pint of it. I can tell it has much more tahini in it than your run of the mill hummus you usually buy, which is the way my dad makes it and is of course, the best way to make it. The spinach and cheese pies, also at the back counter, are great. I also came here hoping they would have lahmajun, and they did. It's basically a round piece of bread very similar to pita, with spiced ground lamb spread on top and baked. They have it in bags in the frozen section. Spices are plentiful, as are most other kinds of sauces or pastes you'd need for cooking. Dry flavored (tomato and spinach) couscous also, which I had never seen before. Awesome. Fresh pita bread up by the counter. Some REALLY good looking baked goods I had to stop myself from buying- baklava, kanafi, basbousa, maamoul. I love this place. Ive been coming here for years and have no intention of ever stopping. They have everything a good home cook could want or need - bulk grains and beans, exotic spices and condiments, quality cheeses - and all for very low prices. And their prepared foods are killer - excellent falafel, spanikopita, and babaghanoush, among other things. The staff in the bulk goods area is super nice and very efficient (save for the one guy who takes about 4 times as long as everyone else) and if you go there often enough, they make it a point to start striking up a conversation and asking how you're doing and how your family is - a rare thing these days and a welcome, neighborhood-y touch. The only drawback is their hours - they close at 7 and aren't open on Sunday, but if you can't make it on a weeknight, they're open on Saturday and, honestly, the crowds aren't all that bad. Take your number, go a few doors down to Cook's Companion, and come back a few minutes later. Or better yet, peruse the small but packed aisles on the other side of the store and pick out a new product/condiment/snack food to try. (Side note: I always laugh when I see people paying $6 for Al Wadi pomegranate molasses at fancier places in the neighborhood when it's obvious the store owner bought it for $2.50 at Sahadi's!) read more

I love Sahadi's! Their selection of Middle Eastern food is incredible enough, but their prepared foods are out of this world. The baba ghanoush is mouthwateringly tangy, with just the right amount of texture. The hummus is so thick and creamy that I'm tempted to go over there and buy some right now. The vegetarian grape leaves are light without a hint of greasiness. The grilled artichoke hearts are amazing. Tip: After you stock up on dips, olives, cheeses, and nuts, head over to Damascus, a bakery a couple of doors down, for some melt-in-your-mouth pita bread. read more

Whoah, mama! This place is every bit as good as everyone told me it was, and thensome. Fresh hummous for $3.00/lb. Baba ganoush for $3.75/lb. Octopus salad that's all octopus and no filler for $15/lb! A 500g bag of Ceylon black tea for $4! (Okay, so the tea isn't that good for beverages, but if you want to do a tea-smoked chicken, you'll save some money buying it here.) I'm in bulk foods heaven right now. I walked out of there today with the aforementioned treats, tea that's 50% cheaper than in my old 'hood, a half dozen hot sauces, anchovies, capers, pickled cucumber, mangos, okra and delicious pomegranate juice. I even got a licorice root stick for a quarter. I looooove licorice, and haven't seen it in unprocessed form since I lived in the country. Living in walking distance of this place is going to be a one way ticket to a lighter wallet and fatter ass. And I'm totally cool with that. read more

I do not think that I could say enough about Sahadi's! I love everything about it. The product is top notch, the store is legendary and the staff is as attentive and fun as it gets. I am super excited that in about 2 weeks a new addition to Sahadi's will be opening up. This means more awesomeness! I have to jump on the five star review train here. Back when I lived in Bklyn (20 years ago) I shopped here. I still make a pilgrimage a couple times a year, if only for a bottle of Lebanese olive oil. If you've never been it's not too difficult to paint a picture of the place: Imagine a very well-stocked Middle-Eastern market. Now imagine a good upscale gourmet shop full of cheeses, cured meats (and fish), bread, coffee, chocolates and some (very good) prepared foods. And more. Put the two together under one roof. Last detail: imagine the prices being reasonable. There you have it. That's Sahadi's. I don't really need to go there anymore. I can get everything I buy there closer to home. But I still make an afternoon out of a trip there, because they are an example of something very right in the world to me - the kind of business I'm compelled to support. Sahadi's reeeeeally does not need me. With 151 reviews (the majority of the quinto-star variety), my 2 cents are worth less than camel's spit. But I'll rustle up this stellar review anyway, because really, this store makes working in downtown Brooklyn par none! On a block full of Middle Eastern delicacies, what makes Sahadi's accessible? It's organized and clean. The staff are friendly. Signs are in English. Prices are well marked. Even the checkout is digitized. It's sorta ridiculous that I didn't really start taking advantage of Sahadi's offerings until about 2 years into this job. The bulk bins alone justify the short walk from my office! Some things, such as the dried veggie chips, cost less than half of how much I normally pay at a discount store! There are so many snacks -- dried fruits, chocolates, candies, nuts, party mixes -- available at such great prices, it's no wonder you have to take a paper number to get served. Don't fear, although nearly everyone in line is requesting multiple items, the abundant Sahadi's guys move quickly! Next up, the deli counter in the back. Here you'll find some of the best kickass hummus you've ever had. Grab a 75c bag of pita near the cashier's and you're good to go. But don't stop there - try some of the many savory pastries - I can vouch for the sundried tomato and cheese, spanokopita, samosas, mushroom and leek, and chicken rolls. A couple of them make a lunch. Soon, I will graduate on to their entree-type dishes and fresh salads. I would tell you about the rest of the place, except that I usually spend so much time browsing the bulk bins and deli counter that I've never actually had a chance to look at the rest. That said, it's pretty clear that when at Sahadi's, there's always too many things you want. But at such low prices for such high quality, you should definitely indulge!! read more

When I lived on Baltic I was here a couple of times a week. Now I'm lucky if I make it a few times a year. For me, the best things are the lentils and rice, zataar bread, spanakopita, and the bulk nuts/fruits. The cheeses are good, but nothing special. They also have a fantastic array of candy from around the world. If you really want a treat, get some of the huge chunks of halvah. Mmmmmm. I love Sahadi's and I don't even typically do the shopping or cooking in my household. My wife loves it too. (For the record, I'm not a misogynist the way that statement might have sounded; I do all the cleaning.) While there are many items that are either imported from the Mediterranean or inspired by Mediterranean cuisine that you can find here, the bulk foods section is the major draw of Sahadi's for me. Among the bulk food, you can get a huge variety of dry foods (seeds, nuts, dried fruits, candies), olives and snack foods by the ounce or pound. If it seems a bit crowded when you walk in the door, make a beeline for the "take a number" machine or else you might get passed in line quickly. That said, even when it is fairly crowded, the folks who bag, measure, weigh and price the bulk foods are exceptionally efficient and move the lines quickly. They're happy to offer you a taste of most anything there before you purchase. Once you've moved past the bulk foods, you'll find what amounts to an excellent mom and pop grocer with a slight emphasis on Mediterranean and/or Middle Eastern fare. It's all very reasonably priced. Despite the fact that we have to ride the subway for a little bit and take a 5 minute walk to get there, we shop at Sahadi's almost every week for many of our groceries. This is a wonderful family shop with an old fashioned flair. The staff is nice and helpful. They have a very wide variety of hard to find items. I would give this place 5 stars but the crowds make it four. I suppose I can't hold it against Sahadi's....they can't help it if they're the ish. :) What first drew me into Sahadi's was my search for sumac. I had some at dinner at a Palestinian friend's house and I had to ask his mom "what was that spice!" This place has everything you could want. Sweets, spices, cheese, hummus, nuts, dried fruit.... This place is amazing!! I'm so lucky to live so close to Sahadi's, but now I have formed an addiction to bulk nuts and dried mango! This place carries in bulk, items that you may never knew existed! Several varieties of almonds, any type of nut you could ever want, a great place to buy coffee; and my personal favorite, the dried mango they carry is better than any I've ever had! Also, make sure to pick up a warm baguette, there is really nothing better! I rave about this place all the time, and make my non-Brooklyn friends jealous that they can't shop here all the time!! This place is popular, so typically you'll have to wait. Having lived in New York for a while and having a surprisingly hard time finding a truly quality Middle Eastern goods store, I am very very satisfied with Sahadi's. They have EVERYTHING I wanted, including: 1. Different sized pita breads 2. All spices for every Mediterranean recipe 3. Lebanese KISHK! 4. The biggest selection of dried fruits and nuts everrrr. I am very happy. Everything is very reasonably priced, too. I live near Sahadi's which is rather dangerous. I'm always dropping by to get some more spicy hummus or baba ghanouj. It's that good!! Seriously, probably the best I've had around here. They have fabulous prices on nuts, dried fruits, olives, teas, spices... all that is necessary for some good eatin'. They have some other delectable eats in the back. The small spanakopita is 3 for $1.25 - perfect for a light lunch. (I try to eat like a bird) And did I mention the "small" pitas package is only 70 cents?!?!?!?!? I was quite fond of Sahardis till a few years ago, it seems that the busier the got the ruder they got, at one time it was a gem where you could get hard to find food items from the Middle East, however there are many more places to get these things now and Sahardi has not moved with the times, I now go a few doors down to The Damascus Bakery to get most things. read more

This is what food dreams are made of. *I am not the only one that dreams of food, right?* The staff is super friendly and offer samplings, which is another reason why you dont want to be hasty here. "Seriously, stop telling me how spectacular Sahadi's is." This is what I said approximately 3 days before I finally was forced to GO to Sahadi's about a month and a half ago. My G/F was rather annoying with her constant proclamations of the Awesome that is Sahadi's. "It's so greeeat." She says. "I looooove it,." She says. It was to the point that I really wanted to give the awesome 7th grade response "If you love it so much why don't you marry it." But I decided against that...and I went with the 3rd grade response "Well, your FACE is great." which really? Didn't have the sting that I thought it might. So I go. And just as she so vehemently implied it was IN fact "Great." Do you know how annoying that is? I didn't need this. I wanted nothing more than to go and say "This place sucks ASS. You have poor tastes in specialty stores." and then dance around doing my Mocky Mock-Mock dance. Sadly I had no such luck. They have a great spread there. The Spanakopita is ridiculous. I will walk out with tons of it, plus at least a pound of the Italian olives. They've literally ruined me for any store bought hummus. Theirs is far superior. One amusing point is one of their front store guys who helps you when you grab a number and want some of the goods they have to measure out, sorta just makes things up. For example when we first bought the Italian olives (On his suggestion) he described it as breakfast olives. I had not heard of such a thing so I googled it and still couldn't locate any usage of these tasty little breakfast olives. Upon returning and receiving a differing guy to help me and asking for said "Breakfast Olives" he laughed at me and said "Don't listen to him, sheesh, he just makes things up." So if the black guy helps you in the front, take whatever he calls things with a grain of salt. They'll be delicious, but totally misnamed ;). read more

Talk about dried foods heaven. I needed pitted and dried dates for a recipe and knew this was the place to go. After picking up a number, I proceeded to stand awkwardly in a spot (you'll be in the way, no matter what) and observe what everyone else was ordering. The low-sugar mango is pretty popular, as is the pineapple and nearly everyone ordered dried papaya. It took MUCH willpower to only order three different items. The staff? Super friendly. I ended up getting the dates, the dried pineapples, the low-sugar mango and some malted milk balls for my husband. Holy crap. I fell in love with dried pineapples, they are AMAZING. The mango I wasn't so in love with, I much prefer it unsweetened altogether, and will have to try that version on my next visit. Their bulk section is where it's at. What an awesome place. I came here just looking for tahini, which is impossible to find in the supermarket, but left with lots more. Cheap flours, spices, nuts, beans...it goes on and on. The prepared food in back is pretty good, too. Other than a stray olive, the falafel sandwich was delicious, and surprisingly filling. Basically, this is the place to come whether you're looking for middle eastern or mediterranean food you can't get anywhere else, or just looking to save money on staples like humus for $3 or pita, which is 80 cents for a pack of 6 (compared to $1.29 for a pack of 4 across the street at the new trader joe's). read more

The rapid turnover means super-fresh nuts, grains, spices, etc, with great prices and selection, and high quality, too. Add that to a good array of prepared foods and I usually walk out with a lot more than I thought I was going to buy! I'm literally in heaven as I write this. When I was in Greece recently, I became slightly infatuated with tzatziki. I'd always been a fan but it hit new levels when I tasted the goodness in Greece - after enjoying it at almost every meal, I was saddened to leave it behind. I wandered to Sahadi's after work this evening and perused the prepared foods counter. I picked up a few items including 1/2 lb of their tzatziki just to try out. Wow. It's literally just as good as in Greece. Heavy on the garlic, dill, and cucumber peels. My husband and I literally ate it in two minutes. Best Feta cheese in all of Brooklyn. Price is amazing too. I buy everything from Fairway on a weekly basis, but refuse to get Feta anywhere but here. They have three kinds of Feta: Greek: I grew up on Greek Feta. Theirs is OK, my least favorite of the 3. French: Creamy, subtle, delicious. Bulgarian: Knock-you-over taste, salty, amazing, incredible texture. Buy 2 pounds. You'll be glad you did. read more

Sure the lines are outrageous on Saturday's but u just can't beat their curry cous cous, spinach spanokopita, lentils and rice, falafel hummus wrap, or their soups. Best of all: TIRAMISU... I made friends after bringing a large tray (located in the freezer section in a black rectangular container) of their TIRAMISU to a dinner party.
