I arrived seeking a vegan bun hue, a spicy lemongrass soup. I was told this was not available, but the vegetarian menu nonetheless had some worthwhile selections on it. My lemongrass tofu arrived sizzling in a hot bowl, and possessed an abundance of flavor. It came with a size of aromatic jasmine rice and separate vegetables, some of which I liked and some I did not want, but at least having them separated gave me the ability to choose. My green Thai tea was strongly flavored and something sweet gave me a bigger charge than I anticipated. As I was hungry, adding some rolls was not a bad decision. There is a great vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant in the suburbs, but for anyone who wants to be in downtown Alexandria, this place has some quality to offer. read more

I popped into this Vietnamese spot for a quick lunch outing. It's a smaller spot hidden between the various rows of establishments in old town Alexandria. On the inside there's a few small wooden tables and chairs that populate the fairly plain but clean space, as well as a bar with several seats and a couple of TV's located towards the back of the restaurant. Their menu features the typical Vietnamese fair with appetizers like summer rolls, a variety of protein options for banh mi sandwiches, about 10 different pho options, and rice and protein dish combinations with prices ranging from $10-$20. I decided on the vermicelli dish with grilled pork and the crisp spring roll, and a Thai iced tea. The service was solid and the food came out in a timely manner. The Thai iced tea was really good a little less sweet than I'm accustomed too but I found that to be a positive. As for the vermicelli dish it was excellent: good presentation, the pickled carrots, cucumbers, and bean sprouts were fresh, the spring roll was crunch with a nice combination of ingredients inside, and I found the grilled pork to be flavorful and fairly tender. All in all zero complaints about this experience and I'd highly recommend giving them a try. read more

Really good Vietnamese restaurant option in Old Town Alexandria! If you're seeing a show at the Little Theater of Alexandria, this place is a convenient 6-minute walk away. Lots of pluses - first, the interior decor is pleasant and spacious but also informal and welcoming. Second, the pho here is very good. I tried the Bun Bo Hue which was hearty and infused with pork broth. The only minor blemish was the dessert which took nearly 15 minutes to prepare and was not very satisfying. Now called, Saigon Rolls...Just re-opened one month+ ago with new owner, manager, cook, and waiter. I've had several solid 4* visits for this quality choice in the heart of Old Town. I've been three times now. I had to try my "usual" with my first time visit post reopening: Grilled Pork Vermicelli and Crispy Spring Roll (Bún Thit Nuong Cha Gio). It was very good both times I had it. Loved the crunch and flavors of the eggroll. I asked for some extra veggies and wow, homerun. I also tried the Banh Mi Pork on a seperate visit. It was really good. Lots of veggies and good flavors with the chicken. Spice hack: If you like a little spicy they are happy to bring jalapeños on the side. So good! My husband and I love to eat here. We come often and just hosted a party for 12 here to celebrate Chinese New Year. Place recently got "rebranded". They updated their menu with newer items and everything is now 20% or more higher. Pho is one size only and the meat is good but the portions are rather small for the hefty updated price. For these prices they need to be large, not all size are the same. Broth is really good though and not too sweet or heavy on star anise/cinnamon. Do ask for the chilli oil as it does not sit in a jar at your table. I'm so happy to have such a wonderful pho place close to where I live! I've ordered takeout from here many times and most recently dined in, about a month ago. Their pho is a generous portion and their broth is so hearty and delicious. They are also generous with their portion of meats in the pho (I usually order the beef pho with several types/cuts of beef, including slices of eye-of-round steak, well-done brisket, well-done flank, soft tendon, and bible tripe. The servings are large and taste is flavorful and rich. We had the Grilled Pork Summer Rolls, Eye Round Steak Pho, and Grilled Pork Vermicelli. The peanut sauces that came with the Summer Rolls were very unique and the Broth for the Pho was one of the most rich flavors we have tasted. The food has always been consistently great here, however we were surprised by how bad the service was. It began fine but then the young man proceeded to pour my boyfriend water first when I was the one who specifically asked for it. So while he was also out of water, I was the one who needed it at that moment. Secondly, when he brought my boxes I asked for, he proceeded to mansplain to me which containers were for what food item (it was obvious) and then took my cash I used for the bill and didn't give it back to me on his own.
