I have been wanting to go here for years! Did so today. The owner "lady in the window" is so charming and friendly. This review is based on delivery, not service or ambience. I haven't visited the restaurant yet and the current reviews scared me a bit. I usually order from another place but that one was understandably closed. After a disastrous Thanksgiving cooking mishap, this place was our saving grace. I ordered from a delivery app. The food arrived hot, tasted good and fresh, and plentiful. Delivery came in the stereotypical Chinese takeout containers that you see in movies from the early 2000s. I was mildly dismayed at the price for a Chinese carryout spot, but the Singapore Rice Noodles I ordered were pretty good. There is not inside here because of COVID, but I think that's now just an excuse to decrease costs and not have to worry about maintaining a place to sit, so I was forced to stand outside in the cold for 10 minutes unfortunately. The General Tso's Chicken was very delicious! Large chunks of white chicken meat, in a fabulous sauce! Did I say fabulous sauce? You select the hotness. Served over their delicious fried rice. Along with a perfectly made Beef Egg Roll. I was so pleasantly surprised and thankful! First time trying this place. The cashier was also very friendly. The chef is perfecto! We ordered delivery and was quoted 35-45 minutes, which is reasonable for dinner. We waited 1 hour and 15 minutes for our food. The food wasn't hot, it was more warm then anything. We ordered General Tso Tofu and Sesame Tofu, both with fried rice, along with egg drop soup and hot and sour soup, and vegetable Spring Rolls. The tofu both were delicious, however the fried rice was not. First it lacked flavor and it wasn't mixed well bc we could see chunks of white rice. Not worth the $1 extra. Soup and spring roll were good. Again, bc we waited so long for delivery they weren't hot. Portion size was very reasonable for the price. We had plenty of tofu for leftover. I don't think I'll be ordering delivery again from here. I'm going to try other places in the area. read more

How I ended up in this dumpster of a cafe.... Had a 2 hour wait to get my state inspection done ony car next door. Other then that I would never have given this place a second look since it looks like it needs to be condemned or out of business. As soon as I opened the door I get a punched in the face with a huge cloud of smoke from burned food, (note to self if the restaurant looks like it's on fire when you open the door don't eat there). But I thought maybe it could be a hidden gem since it has 4 stars on yelp, which they deserve none of. I ordered the Sweet BBQ Pork, general Tso's chicken and Combination Fried Rice. I wish I just would have just gotten a bag of chips and a soda from the gas station while I waited for my car to finish. As I waited for my food to be prepared I was looking around the restaurant. As I grabbed my can of soda out of the fridge I noticed how filthy the place was. On top of both fridges there had to be at least a quarter inch of dust and grim, looked like it wasn't cleaned in years. I wish I would have noticed this before I ordered my food because I would have turned around and WOK'd my self back out the front door. The Sweet BBQ pork was beyond terrible. It tasted like it was dehydrated to be stored and then rehydrated and over cooked leaving it tasting like wet beef jerky, absolutely zero flavor or pork. The general Tso's chicken was ehhhhhhhhhh on its very best day, I think Walmarts frozen tso chicken is better. The best part about it was the white rice that was served with it had real cold chunks of rice in it like it was pulled straight out the fridge. Then the fried rice, I opened it saw the chicken and pieces of pork and shrimp.... Didn't even want to try it. Then there's the good old fortune cookies...... Tasted like they were made back in The Ming Dynasty. Felt like I was chewing on rocks. If you're trying to get your fix of Asian food I'd advise you to WOK right past this place. And as I'm writing this review my stomach just bubbled. You have been warned!!!! read more

Just ordered for the second time. I have been looking for really great Chinese takeout since I moved to Virginia over 5yrs ago and I FINALLY found it! So far I can recommend the Pan Fried Dumplings, Egg Rolls and Spicy Wonton. All the other places I've tried, at least half of a meal was wasted because I didn't like it. I hadn't been here in quite a long time. The place has been there for years and I had stopped going here because I remember the food not being very good, however not opinion has changed. It's still the hole in the wall that it's always been but the food tastes nice and fresh. Usually when it comes to Chinese I tend to order Lo Mein because it's hard to mess that up but some places manage even that. There's really not much to say about this place. It's your standard Chinese affair with the usual Chinese American menu. It's still a pretty good place to go to though. It's small, not a lot of seating but it's quiet and fairly comfortable. It is slightly more pricy than some other area Chinese restaurants but not by that much, really. You can't really go wrong here. They do have their own parking, which is obviously hard to come by here in Old Town and they do have some outdoor seating. Something you rarely find in a Chinese restaurant in this general area. If you've driven to Alexandria, you've probably driven by this quaint little hut right where the GW parkway becomes Washington Street. What's the bar for Chinese takeout? Not high, in my book, and that's part of the attraction. Just give me some tofu cooked in something tasty for cheap. By that standard, I was quite pleased. I enjoyed my two basic tofu dishes over the course of several days, and they were better renditions than average (and I would know; I eat a lot of Chinese takeout), and they did not cost much. They had plenty of decent menu options (plenty for the veg crowd; fake meat entrees as well as tofu and veggies), and the food was ready in fifteen minutes. I rejected the proffered free spring rolls (on account of shrimp), but they threw in a couple of canned sodas for free, which is good by me. It was good enough that I wish I were in DC, but since they are not, I might even visit them again whenever I find my way out to Virginia. read more

Ordered delivery from Asian Wok just the other day and am now a big fan. From the time I ordered to receipt of my food, it took 15 or 20 minutes. Their menu offers vegetarian meat dishes, i.e. veggie general tso's chicken, and also has a healthy section. This time, we opted for the non-healthy dishes. The cabbage and cucumber appetizer: a pickled dish with the vegetables in an orange vinegar brine. It was different and great. Spicy and tangy wontons: wontons in a spicy soy sauce - awesome. Pork chow mein: contained fresh vegetables and tender pork Szechuan noodles: a sweet, spicy sauce with a mix of meats. Delicious. Everything tasted fresh and the prices were all under $10. The coupons read as follow: 1.) free general tso's chicken with 35$ or more purchase 2.) free 2 spring rolls with $15 purchase 3.) free crab Rangoon with $20 purchase 4.) free chicken fried rice with $30 purchase The delivery is pretty fast. They usually say it will take 45 minutes but it does not take that long. It usually takes about 30 minutes. There are about a bijillion place in Alexandria to get Chinese food and Asian Wok is not the best but it certainly isn't the worst either. Many of the reviews seem to really slam this place for its sketchy delivery;it is true that delivery here is often not of the speed of a Dominoes Pizza, but the food does deserve a better rating than its delivery. However, takeout is much better, and in the summer you can use some of the cute benches outside this little hut-like restaurant. It really is something out of the 60s, and you almost expect the Brady Bunch to round the corner any minute. "Jan, give this egg roll to Marsha." "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!" The great thing about this place is that they have wise selection of menu options, and some of my favorites include the combination fried rice, Moo Shu Vegetables, and Pad Thai. All of these dishes are pretty yummy, spotty delivery time or no. So, I would give Asain Wok a try, for you really could do far worse. Finally, a five star nod must be given to Asian Wok's online ordering website, for It is without a doubt, one of the best I have ever seen. You just click on the menu item and place it in your little Asian Wok shopping cart. With each item, it confabulates your total and even gives you the option to add extra sauces and specify weather you wish to pick it up, dine in, or get delivery. Why, there is even a spot for the tip, but it must be noted that they charge a $1 delivery fee which I am not sure if most places do, All and All, the online ordering page is a great little feature. read more

Amongst the more traditional yet modern looking brick buildings in the Alexandria area literally stands this shack that caters excellent Chinese food for the budget-minded patron. I'm assuming the cafe specializes in takeout orders since they've done away with the menu board inside. The lunch specials won't set you back more than $5-6 and it also comes with a can of soda. I ordered sweet and sour pork and my wife ordered sesame chicken with your choice of steamed or fried rice. Your food is made upon order so you know it's fresh and not sitting under a heat lamp all day (a la Panda Express). The portion sizes were amazingly huge (your stomach will thank you for coming here), piping hot, and superbly delicious. The seseme sauce was so good I just started dipping my sweet and sour pork in that sauce. There is a small sit-down area for patrons and we noticed a few tables outside. Suprisingly, there were a mens and women's bathroom in such a small building. Lastly, you know it's ghetto when they use dish washing liquid instead of hand soap in the men's bathroom sink. read more

Really affordable and delicious! I walked over from my hotel for lunch and checked out their lunch specials. Unfortunately they didn't cater to vegetarian needs on the lunch menu, so I dug through the menu. So many veggie and vegan options!! I ordered veggie lo mein to go at the same price of the lunch specials. It was a ton of food for $6.49! My only gripe is the spice level... While I didn't specify, it was a 2 on the scale and I love a little kick. Mostly my fault as I should've specified. It does not indicate "spicy" for that dish on the menu. They use no MSG and have quite the extensive menu. There are 2 tables inside but I took it to go since they provided me a plate and utensils in the bag with my takeout container! I was so disappointed after finally trying this place after reading all of the positive reviews. I am vegetarian, so I was excited when I saw all of the vegetarian options on their menu. I ordered the vegetarian version of the General Tso's Chicken and Shrimp Pad Thai. I figured I couldn't go wrong with those 2 classics. The General Tso's Vegetarian Chicken had an odd, strange taste to it, not like your typical General Tso's sauce. The texture of the vegetarian chicken was the biggest turn off. It was really stringy, think of a pulled pork consistency. I could only eat about 1/3 of it before trashing it. As for the Shrimp Pad Thai - I've never had bad pad Thai before. It's pretty impossible to mess that up - but it just had a really strange taste, it was almost like a curry flavor or something. Aside from the food not being good, it was pretty pricey. I don't mind paying a little more if the quality is good, but my bill was approximately $50 for Vegetarian General Tso's Chicken and Shrimp Pad Thai. read more
