Last night me and my friend wanted to try a new restaurant and we decided to try out Sake Maru. We went for dinner, and we were instantly greeted. The staff is SOOO sweet, and made sure our dining experience was top tier. As you enter the restaurant you notice the decor, a lot of earth tones for the furniture design with an accent color of red for the art. I found the interior to be calming , which made me feel better because I was definitely about to order a lot of food and comfort is important. For food we ordered the crab rengoons for an appetizer. The dish comes with this sweet but spicy sauce that complimented the crab rengoons very well. For my main entree I ordered the Bento box. It was super filling, and packed with flavor. The Shumai was definitely a standout, and my friend ordered the tuna roll. Everything was well plated and added to the overall experience. The tempura was perfectly fried, and I can't wait to go back for seconds. I can't wait to go back because again the staff was absolutely phenomenal. Sushi, specifically the nigiri was tremendous. They also fly specialty fresh fish in from Japan every Thursday. Not to mention the have fresh Uni (sea urchin) which is not common around here. Great place and great atmosphere! read more

I've had sushi all over the US, and internationally. I can honestly say that this is the best sushi I have ever had. My wife and I were in from Chicago to attend a Colts game and decided on a whim to eat here. Now, we may just make a few trips a year just to visit this sushi spot. It was that amazing. My quest to find the very best sushi restaurant in Indy is over. Sake Maru is better than Blue Sushi, Wasabi, Sushi Bar and Sakura. It just is. I've eaten at other places not worth mentioning. Honestly, Blue Sushi is the only sushi restaurant worth mentioning in the same sentence as Sake Maru. The others aren't bad, but Blue Sushi is the only sushi restaurant that competes with Sake Maru. The others were once better, but are in decline. My advice is to look at Sake Maru's options beyond just sushi rolls... although I recommend the Energy Roll and Lobster Roll. The sashimi is the sweet spot, but their appetizers (ika/squid) and specials are notable mentions. They have a good sake selection as well... although I haven't tried much, but what I have tried is good. The desserts are nice too. We crushed some fried ice cream and fried cheesecake after we already had way too much to eat. read more

Had the $12 lunch teriyaki salmon which consisted of chilled iceberg lettuce, steamed rice, 2 small broccoli florets, 3 raw carrot slices, the smallest, single piece of salmon I have ever been served, on a large bed of sliced raw onions, upon which teriyaki sauce was poured at tableside. read more

Absolutely excellent!! Two of us for a late lunch/early dinner on a Sunday. We were warmly greeted immediately. The decor is a cool modern chic and very fun. The service by not only our main server but other staff was attentive but not nosy. The selections were excellent and the fish was VERY fresh and tasted great! To preface this, I am an athlete so I usually order enough food for 2-3 people just to match my 1. I'm also a huge fan and Japanese cuisine and culture. I ordered the sushi & sashimi combo and the chicken teriyaki. The presentation of the food was great and served in good time. The sushi & sashimi boat came with ice to keep the food chilled and was adorned with lovely flowers and garnishes. I particularly liked the topping of Wasabi on some of the fish. The chicken teriyaki was served on a bed of onions and was still sizzling and steaming when brought to the table. The miso soup was on point as well. The ambiance was very clean and welcoming, the cushions in the booth and on the chairs were very comfortable. The decor was tastefully arranged and was soothing to look at. I am looking forward to coming back and trying more of there dishes. I highly recommend! read more

My friend and me went to Sake Maru for the first time tonight and everything from the ambiance to the service to the food was fantastic! It's located in a small strip mall nestled in between Capriotti's and Verizon and I was expecting more of a to go style restaurant but it is a very nicely decorated full service restaurant. My friend and me both got sushi, the quality of the fish was excellent and we were both very happy with our meals. I will definitely be back soon! read more

My wife and I love sushi and have been dying to try this place. Very unassuming on the outside, but beautifully done on the inside. The waitress was wonderful and made great suggestions. We tried some of the fresh fish flown in from Japan, it was really good. Go on Thursdays, that it is when it arrives. The rolls we selected were great. I am compelled to make this post because I have just had my fifth visit to Saki Maru. I'm overrating myself but I consider myself a connoisseur of sushi. I found this to be by far the best sushi restaurant in Indianapolis. I based this on the variety which is unparalleled, and the freshness which is absolutely paramount. If you're looking for the best sushi in town I promise you this is the place to be. As stated my fifth visit and I am the most critical guy on the planet. Noticed this place just driving by. Stopped for lunch on a Thursday. This is going to be our new favorite sushi place - just wish it was closer to our home. Modern furnishings. Clean tables and dining area. Extremely good selection of fresh fish. We watched the Thursday delivery of fish flown in from Japan arrive. Our waitress said this week they would have Indiana rarities like monkfish liver and gueduck. They had uni on the menu - hard to find around here. Asked her a bit of the history. The third sushi place opened by a Chinese couple - this one open only 4 months. Another in Columbus, IN and the third I can't remember where. They would have gotten 5 stars except for 2 things - bathroom was dirty and looked poorly cleaned compared to the rest of the place. Maybe a good steam cleaning and some polish on the fixtures. Second the prices - a good sized portion of sushi-style Uni was $18.95 (the menu did fairly list "MP"). Three rolls, uni, one eel order, two glasses of wine - $80.00 before tip. But I'm willing to pay for the quality and variety of the fish and a new addition to the meh sushi restaurant selection in Indy. Now all we need is a sushi place Japanese-owned and staffed so I can practice my language skills. read more
