Asaka is consistently delicious and affordable. Their service is always friendly and it has a welcoming, casual atmosphere. Most recently, I tried their Kitsune Udon which was great for a cold, winter evening. The broth was refreshing but flavorful. The tofu was slightly sweet which did throw me off. I'm not sure if I would try that dish specifically again but my goal is to try all of their vegetarian offerings. In general, I always enjoy dining here. For those who love sushi, the prices and quality are unmatched. My boyfriend loved everything he ordered and you can see how generous those portion sizes are. Really fresh fish for sushi. This is my favorite spot in Indy for nirigiri and hand rolls. Long wait for table unless you line up a few minutes before they open on Friday/Saturday. The food is totally worth it despite being up to an hour for the sushi to come out. I have to get a few appetizers to snack on (the octopus salad and fried squid are my faves!) TL;DR: Great little hole in the wall Japanese restaurant, will 100% go again and would go out of my way to specifically go here. Food: Food was awesome. We ordered the tatsuda-age, three sushi rolls, 2 tamago, a katsu curry, and an extra miso. Tatsuda-age had a nice crispy breading without being oily, tamago was extremely good, and I loved the katsu curry (100% recommend if you like Japanese curry). Cost: Cost was awesome, especially with the happy hour sushi. Two people was $40 and honestly we ordered too much. Ambiance: Bit of a hole on the wall restaurant, but I tend to like this style of place. Nothing fancy and could definitely use a coat of paint. Service: Nothing special but no complaints either. Food seems to be made fresh so it took awhile to get everything, but all the hot things came out hot. Not exactly service related but do be warned that this place can fill up fast. We arrived 10 minutes after opening and there were maybe 2-3 tables empty, by the time we left, there was a line of 3-4 groups out the door waiting for tables to open up. Overall: 100% will go again. I went here to celebrate just booking a plane ticket back to Japan! Asaka came highly recommended from friends and it did not disappoint . I went on a Sunday which meant they didn't have their sushi menu but the offerings on their regular menu were extensive and it wasn't an issue. I ordered a chirashi bowl and my friend and I split the pickled vegetables as well. My dish came with a salad and another small side dish of thinly sliced carrots and cabbage. The chirashi bowl was giant and so tasty! The service was great and our waitress was friendly. The restaurant was full which is always a good sign! Next time I want to try the seafood ramen! I loved the traditional style room, the sushi bar, and how cozy the main seating area felt. I am so excited to go back here and try more items on their menu! I was really annoyed and disappointed that they don't serve Sushi rolls on sundays. I had no idea, and we drove 30 min to try this place for sushi!! What sushi restaurant doesn't serve sushi?!?! The service was not good. Our waitress had no idea what unfiltered sake was, had no idea what the house broth consisted of. She knew really little about the menu which was a huge red flag. And she never came back and asked how we were doing after food was served until we asked for the check. I ordered the tofu ramen which had decent flavor but only 2 tofus... so maybe a 7/10. My husband had the katsau chicken which he rated 6/10. He said the breading was mushy to the chicken and the egg was undercooked. We may come back and give it another chance with sushi. We have been going to this place for years and I have to say it's my favorite in Indy. The fish is "fresh" and the rolls are so well made with the perfect balance of ingredients. We enjoy going there for the happy hour because I eat a lot. Since they are small and have a large demand to attend, they have made a few changes to the logistic of the restaurant that I find to be very annoying. Wanted to do an update since it has been TEN YEARS of me and mine enjoying and celebrating at Asaka. After moving out of Indianapolis, I dream and yearn for Asaka....daily to be honest. When you walk in the door, you are transported into a calming and beautifully decorated environment that prepares you for the wonderful meal ahead. The climate of restaurants has changed so much over the years, but I still believe in the value of a family-owned and cared-for restaurant where the focus on simplicity, deliciousness, and passion is evident in every incredible bite. Every server is prompt and has a work ethic that is incredible. Asaka is so much more than sushi. The epicurean experience of the varied multitude of appetizers and dishes (Try the house-made oshinko pickles! Try the korokke!) show the dedication of the owners to bring a loving and complete experience of Japanese cuisine to Indianapolis. Each broth and stock for ramen or udon is rich and warm. The curry bursts with garlic. The grilled mackerel is crisped perfectly and served with grated daikon to balance the oil in the fish. Did you know they also have a very curated sake and beverage program? If you imbibe, loosen up! Try some shochu. Doesn't make it feel comfortable but ya rather the opposite. There many also is too busy. A lot of the food items have fancy names, but once you read the description... there's only like one difference between it and another item if any difference at all. I'll be honest, I've had some meh experiences at Asaka. And in the back of my mind its tough to go somewhere, have a poor or mid experience, and still blow a good chunk of change. But my last few times at Asaka have been great and I'm so glad for it. Ramen is flavorful and warm, with a healthy portion size. Takoyaki is just as good as ever. Sashimi, which has been a sore point before, has been top notch. I particularly enjoyed the grilled salmon, which is just slightly cooked to give it a bit of a crispy bite. This place is still very small and I would recommend coming after happy hour, where its much less hectic. Went on a ramen date for my niece's 14th birthday! She loves ramen and Manga art. So what better choice then to go to Asaka Japanese Restaurant. This space was a lot larger then I expected but still rather intimate and pleasantly quiet and not too noisy. Introvert Approved. When we entered around 7 PM we had to write our name down and party size on the waiting list and then they recommended that you stay nearby or in your car outside to wait to be called. Just a tip: there are no same day reservations, so call for reservations a day ahead. It wasn't an issue for us however to wait, gave me more time to visit and catch up with my oldest niece and talk about the menu. She is way more adventurous at food then I am! So she explored a few things. The fried oysters, fried squid tentacles, and California sushi rolls were her choices for appetizers. Then she selected a chilled ramen entree that included shrimp as the main protein (my niece doesn't eat pork). Most of the ramen or noodles include pork and pork broth, and no substitutions can be made on meat for these items. I selected the Miso Ramen with the help of our hostess' recommendation for a more savory broth. And I personally eat pork on occasion. I added spicy paste on the side to add the amount of spice I wanted to it gradually. Overall, it was a nice setting, we were able to take our time enjoying our meal, after being seated (overall wait time was around 40-45 min) on a Saturday night for our party of 2, walk-ins. We were seated at a longer table available in the back of restaurant. Once again, great for small talk and not too much noise. The food was rather tasty. Ample portions and even better prices. My niece liked her fried squid tentacles the most. Of all things lol! Love her adventurous nature. The menu prices were extremely reasonable compared to other comparable restaurants and service was good too. Make sure to support and tip these special local gems that bring such true Japanese culture and flavor. Asaka has my vote for best sushi in Indy. The fish was fresh and high quality and the rolls were amazing. They have happy hour Thursday - Saturday from 5-7 PM which makes everything very affordable. Highly recommend the takoyaki as an appetizer - fresh, crunchy and super flavorful. From the happy hour menu you can't go wrong, you are limited to two happy hour rolls per customer though. Highlights were the funky shrimp fry roll and the spicy salmon roll. Off the regular sushi menu, the fire fire roll was fantastic. Our favorite roll of the night and would highly recommend. They are located off of 82nd, I got there at 530 on a Friday and they are slammed which I am glad to see. I had to wait about 15 minutes, then I was seated in one of the side rooms. The menu set up is great, you just check off the rolls you would like, they have sashamni and nigiri options as well. I started with miso soup which is delicious, and savory, and I also had a Sapporo beer which I love to have when I get sushi. I'm usually pretty picky on sushi and eating at Asaka is no exception on how particular I am. I was extremely impressed, especially for Indianapolis. I have found myself a new favorite sushi spot. Me and a group of friends came for happy hour. The deals were pretty good. I was expecting subpar sushi, with being in Indianapolis and all but this was the best I've tasted in awhile! You have to get here early, we got here at 5:30 and after we sat down there was already a wait! Servers were quick and friendly. The sushi chefs do not skimp on portions. The sashimi and sushi were thick cut just how I like it. Miso soup was the tonkatsu Panko chicken was good. Not a fan of the salad dressing on the salad but it's probably just me. It's easy to find an average sushi spot, so when a co-worker told me check out Asaka, and described it as "hole in the wall", I was in. It is located in a pretty plain mall area, not in an area where you would expect to get *good* sushi, but I was game. Especially when said coworker told me about their happy hour and I already saw a line forming, despite me arriving 20 minutes before opening. Seating was done very efficiently, and those that weren't seated in the first wave, their numbers were taken to call when seats were ready. Menus were given out rapidly. However, if you do not know what you want to order initially, be patient for the staff to come around again. The beer I got was cold and crisp and just what I needed to accompany what I ordered. The fish was fresh, rice was seasoned excellently. Additionally, the size of the sashimi slices were very generous. I was pleasantly surprised to find true amaebi to be offered as well, which I ordered. Everything was delicious and I wished I had someone else with me to enjoy the additional dishes I saw other tables ordered around me. Pros: - Great sushi with high quality, fresh fish. These were rolls were stuffed with fish! For the happy hour price, it's hard to beat. Each roll which came with 8 pieces was anywhere between $2-$5 depending on the filling. The portion size for the sashimi was also very generous/ They also had sashimi, nigiri, and hand rolls on the happy hour menu. - Friendly service. Even though it was very busy, service was very friendly and good. - Reasonable prices. The menu items were very reasonably priced. Ramen for $10?! Hard to find those prices anymore in this economy. Cons: - Long wait times. This was my biggest complaint. We got there at 5pm which is when it opens and there was already a line to get into the door. I would also highly suggest making a reservation. We were quoted 40 minutes one time to get seated. I would also suggest ordering the sushi right as you get seated because the wait time for sushi can be up to an hour. I would also suggest ordering other entrees and appetizers from the regular menu so that you're not starving while waiting for the sushi. Overall, great sushi for a very affordable price. There's only a few places in Indiana where you can have authentic Japanese food that's run by a Japanese family and that's Asaka, and one or two restaurants in Carmel Indiana. Theirs also the grocery store one world. Out of all those asaka is the best. This restaurant is run by a father and daughter duo and the daughter is a fantastic sushi chef! They've got a much broader selection of food and the best sushi in Indiana. Let me tell you what my standards are, I haven't been able to eat sushi ever since I left Japan outside of California so the fact that I like this place says a lot. The atmosphere is very authentic as it reminds me of Japan. Service was great, but I will say they really practice Japanese business because just like in Japan, you will sometimes see a one hour line. Reservations can be made, but they must be made ahead of time and you better be there on time for your reservation or else they will give it to a walk-in. they're closed three days out of the week which I'm assuming has a lot to do with making sure everyone has the same amount of days off, but also probably has to do with their food vendor. I was shocked with how fresh and delicious their Sashimi. Gyoza, and Takoyaki dishes were. If I had more stomach space I would have used it to try out their Katsudon and Shio Koji dishes. Everything is so fresh and mouth-watering delicious. My friends and I ordered some sushi to split, and I don't think there was one roll that I didn't like - all of the flavors and textures go so well together. I've been about three or four times now, and I've noticed that the service can be a little slow when the restaurant is crowded (usually there's a little wait for a table and you have to give them your phone number). However, even when the restaurant is crowded, it's always pretty quiet inside which makes the overall experience super pleasant and gives it a peaceful ambiance. Happy hour has maki rolls, hand rolls, sashimi and nigiri for $2-3 each! You can order as much as you'd like and you can take home the extras. However, I recommend you order everything right away as they are fairly slow. You may be waiting 45-60mins for sushi. The sashimi and nigiri is very fresh and they give really big pieces! I need my sushi every once in a while, especially on special occasions. I'm typically a dine-in sushi eater, but this pandemic has me changing all of my habits, including getting sushi to go. Fortunately, Asaka has BOMB sushi, even if you have to take it home to enjoy. Speaking of changing habits: I'm old, so I'm used to calling up a restaurant on the phone and placing a carryout order. But Asaka has this thing where, if it's before 4 p.m., they want you to place an order by sending them a DM on Instagram. OK! How thoroughly modern. Is this what the kids are talking about when they say they are "sliding into your DMs"? So I slid into Asaka's DMs and placed my order, only half believing that ordering in this fashion would actually work. But you know what? They DM'ed me right back to confirm, and I was able to pick up my food a couple of hours later! Time keeps on slipping into the future, and the future is now, apparently. Our order included a California roll, tuna nigiri, shrimp nigiri, mackerel nigiri, a tempura hand roll and a salmon/cucumber/avocado hand roll (temaki), a New York roll, a Demon roll (spicy) and a bowl of miso soup. We also got Rice Puppies, which are balls of rice with seaweed dog faces on them. We loved every single thing, but my favorite was the Demon roll because it was just a bit spicy. All of the sushi was fresh and well made. And I loved that they offered rice puppies -- they are so cute and our kids loved them. They looked like something from a Japanese bento box lunch. I visit Asaka every time when I visit Indianapolis. The foods and atmosphere are very nice and the owner and the staffs are very kind and friendly. Shime Saba and is my favorite dish but other appetizers, donburi, curry, noodles are great as well. Friday was busy bit it was worth visiting there and waiting for 15 minutes.
