Great sushi! We weren't expecting much, because Healdsburg isn't really a place you'd expect to find much sushi, but it was really good. Reasonably priced, clean, good fast service, and tasty. It looks like a small run family business, which I love supporting. We had the shrimp shumai, really good! My husband ordered the spicy tuna roll, and the philly roll. I ordered the tempura shrimp roll and the California roll. They were all tasty, and the sauce on the spicy tuna roll was so good!! My only critique would be that I prefer a bit more rice on my sushi, but we ordered a side of rice and ate that with our sushi, so it was no big deal. I've been extremely disappointed in this place! I live in Healdsburg and have given this place 3-4 chances. They're service is the WORST!!! The food is ok but you can do so much better! The first time we went I noticed the service was slow but I gave them the benefit of the and tried again. I made the mistake of taking friends and family there twice after and what a mistake that was! Never again! Don't waste your time or your money, good luck getting service, seated or any kind of help! I have ended up walking out! Go to Ume in Windsor,(they give you warm towels to wash your hands!) or to Otoro in Healdsburg . The food is Awesome at both places and the service is unparalleled. First time ordering from here. Considering it was a Friday night take out time was 35 minutes, which was reasonable. I ordered the tropical roll, my husband ordered a chicken dish. The tropical roll was the best mango salmon roll I've have in a long time, packaged with a very LARGE serving of ginger and wasabi. I'll start with the good. They have a nice sake selection. I got 6oz of one of my current favorites, Yoshi-no-gawa, a decent quality junmai ginjo. Unfortunately from there it was downhill. The sashimi that my kids and I shared was fresh but soulless. Very soft, almost to the point of mealy and really lacking in taste and texture. This was true for just about every piece of both the sashimi and nigiri we ordered. My wife had the salmon teriyaki and she had a similar description for her cooked fish. A surprisingly tastey teriyaki glaze really saved the day for that dish. Lastly, the service was difficult. I don't know if they happened to be understaffed that particular evening, but there was the host/waiter and one busboy. There are perhaps 8 small tables inside and maybe 4 outside. It was a challenge to get seated, to get our order, to order extra rice in the middle of the meal, to get our bill and to then pay it. OMG, the freshest fish ever! This is my favorite sushi place outside of my hometown, Petaluma.

Decided to try some Japanese food last night so SakeO was the choice. We started with the Softshell crab which was deep fried and served plain with a rice wine dipping sauce (1 star) and the Martini Shrimp, served with a creamy sauce (4 stars). Our entrees were the full meal Teriyaki Beef (3 stars) and the ala carte BBQ Unagi (3 stars). Service was OK and the food arrived quickly, the place is quiet and decently appointed but overall I came away underwhelmed with the experience and wished I had spent my 70 bucks elsewhere. read more

It was all really excellent but the California roll topped out. The quality, taste and presentation was so completely night and day between the two distinctions that we just couldn't believe it. You could retort that you don't order fish in a steak house, and I would agree to an extent, but this is not touted as a sushi house and by the way; WHY have something on your menu that you are not going to take pride in making?? Spicy Prawn dish was overcooked and had a fake flavor in the sauce. Lemon chicken was so sweet, we compared it to lemon meringue pie. Breaded chicken like you would pull out of a freezer for a child. Severely lacking. Sushi is where it's at here, seafood tastes fresh and is showcased both in presentation and in flavor. My boyfriend and I have been eating at Sake O for over 4 years now and have seen it though the ownership change; once the restaurant manager Frank bought the company from Gary Chu a few years ago, the service went sky high. I think before Frank took charge it wasn't paid much attention to by the previous owner-must have used it as a write off. We always sit at the bar and get service from Roger, the sushi chef-he is AMAZING! When we have family or friends with us, we sit on the floor, and have always received wonderful and prompt service. The fish is exceptionally fresh, the food fantastic. Every time we go, (about 8 times/year) we fill our bellies to the brink of bursting-the food is so damn good. The Martini Prawns are killer, as is the shumai for appetizers, and we also enjoy the Lion King Roll, and all of their raw bar. The fried banana dessert is scrumptious. Great selection of Sake, and also a good choice of Healdsburg/Sonoma County wines. If we could afford it, we would eat here every night-this is my absolute favorite restaurant world wide. read more

The restaurant is immaculate without feeling sterile. Everything is sooooo fresh! I brought my son up for a day trip and pictured are the lunch bento boxes and a chefs special Dragon Roll. I went with my friend and her family for a Sunday lunch. Living in town, I had never tried this restaurant, but sushi sounded good. Service was practically non existant, with the bare minimum spoken to us, did not ask if we wanted any thing extra to drink.....Restaurant not crowded, but waiter seemed non interested in making our meal enjoyable. I have been to Sake-O before and just love it. I did this "Dine around Healdsburg" with my favorite PIC, talk about a night of indulgences. The people are very nice, though, don't ask many questions becasue they do not all understand what you are saying.. Tiger prawns smothered in a sweet and spicey aioli served in a martini glass. Ahi rolled in seaweed topped with guacamole and a thinly sliced jalepeno- yes, it was interesting and delicious. Unfiltered sake for toasting to a great start of the evening. Sake Oh My Goodness There's a Japanese Restaurant in Healdsburg! (You mean I don't have to drive all the way to Santa Rosa now?!) My family and I have eaten here a few times now - most of the time we have eaten outside, but last night we decided it was just a bit too chilly to brave the outdoors. The food has been consistently good and the sushi chef is great about customizing rolls. As for the sushi itself - it's been great. I also like their appetizers and complete dinners. Oh geez - that means I like everything! Last night we had the shumai (shrimp dumplings) and the chicken teriyaki dinner, which comes with miso soup, white rice, and a house salad. All excellent. The customer service has been okay, the prices have recently gone up, and sometimes the restaurant seems a little small when there's a lively group dining also. I was really spectacle on trying this place. It's in a plaza and the only sushi place for miles, but I was wrong! It's a very nice restaurant and a place outside to sit in the back which I've never seen before at a sushi restaurant. Of course the sushi is priced like every sushi spot in the city, I was hoping for a discount since we were far up north. The one roll I distinctly remember was the marilyn monroe, pretty expensive but so delicious! We ordered about 5 rolls for the three of us and were very full by the end of the meal. Service was nice and we weren't the only ones in the restaurant so it must be good. Don't be fooled by the location of this place..go and try it. Had hankering for Sushi and decided to give this place another try. Wrong thing to do. The place was filled with about a dozen people which is about 10 people too many for any decent service. The service was lame to say the least. That was the issue before when we tried it, about 4 years ago. Never came back, understood that they have new owners so decided to give it another shot. From the time the order person took our order to the time the first plate arrived was over 30 minutes. Not acceptable just sitting there looking at each other. My maguro came out dry without the sheen that fresh tuna has. Rice on the sushi was falling apart so there was some issue there, all in all, I can safely say we won't be back. The food itself was bland and lifeless. The entrees tasted like a reheated TV dinner. When it was time to pay and end our misery we still had to search the location for someone to take our bill. Good but not the best. I would return here again, and there were some things that I did enjoy. This is an interesting sushi spot given that it is not run by Japanese. I believe the main lady is a Chinese woman. She works at the sushi bar but is regularly barking orders at the rest of the kitchen and wait-staff. Friendly and stern woman. She clearly runs the show. While there for lunch we ordered the following items: Hawaiian roll, carburetor roll, hamachi crudo with jalapeno, salmon and mango roll, and spicy California hand roll. Of the food we had, I would recommend the hamachi as the best dish. The fish was of a higher quality, the sauce was very tasty and fresh. Yummmm. The hawaiin roll was ok, nothing special. I would say their sushi rice could be improved (a little bit). Their salmon and mango roll was ok but I wasn't a huge fan of the salmon. The salmon tasted ok but it definitely wasn't super fresh or of the highest quality. The carburetor was good but not the best that I have every had. They do not have fresh real crab for the "crab salad" portion of the roll. While their imitation may be "good" it still isn't the same as having a fresh crab salad. Two places come to mind that do a better version of the carburetor (Jojo sushi in Santa Rosa and Sushi Hana in Sebastopol). Overall, I would go back if it was convenient but I wouldn't go out of my way to return here. I would give it a 6 out of 10 rating for sushi bars in the area. No question that Hana Sushi in Rohnert Park is the best. Jojo Sushi in Santa Rosa is second. Ume in Windsor is Third. Sushi Hana in Sebatopol would be next and rated fourth. I would then possibly rank Sake O next up on the list. Pros: open all day, quick service at the sushi bar, extensive sake list, some tasty items on the menu. Cons: fish is of decent quality but not comparable to the "best of the best" fish quality. This is a good spot for local sushi....maybe more of a lunch occasion. read more

Sake O -- oh, soo good! I've been to Sake O several times, but the latest was last Saturday night. Damn is the sushi good! That night I decided to sit at the bar with my friends. . .we ordered a few things off the menu and they were superb. Make sure you try the shrimp cocktail---no, it's not your average shrimp coctail--TRY IT!!! It's wonderfullly decadent. After a few rolls, I just asked the sushi chef to start making whatever he thought was good. Wow! What a treat. I highly recommend you do that----he made some great stuff. I live in Healdsburg and have been to Sake O many times. I usually start with the Wakame (seaweed) salad. It is yummy. The rolls are wonderful. Service has always been prompt and friendly. Sake NO! My family and I relocated to Healdsburg last Fall and have been to this restaurant at least 2 dozen times b/c we love sushi and it's convenient. The food is mediocre including the martini prawns, which are fried shrimp served in a martini glass with a heavy mayo-based sauce. It's nothing special. Willi's has a better shrimp options. There are only 2 wait staff for the entire restaurant and bar, one of which is the owner. The service is terrible, food is less than adequate and the biggest issue is they sincerely don't care about customers. Do not patronize this place! For the past 5 months, every time we have walked in to this restaurant, we stand at the door waiting to be acknowledged, the owner is always fixated at the front counter, obsessed with his calculator adding up the tickets and could care less how many people are standing in front of him waiting to be acknowledged. Last night I counted 10. You are just another transaction on another night. Locals do not come here, only tourists. It's worth your while driving to Windsor and going to Ume... where the locals go.
