Our family loves Sakura Blue. Amazing food & service. Cozy atmosphere. Can't recommend it enough!

A lovely little spot tucked away in the Trader Joe's strip mall. Service was spot on and very friendly Gyoza - amazing Red Snapper nigiri - had to see what their quality was for this and was definitely pleased to see it matched my expectations. Very fresh and delicious Kentucky roll (Spicy crab, asparagus topped with torched shrimp, scallop, and eel sauce) - I am not a cream-cheese-in-sushi or avocado person, and it seems like so many sushi places in Louisville rely heavily on these ingredients. Happy to see Sakura had a decent amount of choices for their rolls that didnt include them. This roll was big, tasty and satisfying. Definitely recommend this place. read more

The food was good, but unfortunately the service was terrible. My wife and I have visited this restaurant several times by ourselves and had decent experiences, so we decided to bring our family out for dinner. There were six of us, and our bill was $182. For that amount of money, I expected at least basic hospitality and attentive service. While I was placing the order for our table, the waitress repeatedly asked, "Is that it?" after nearly every item instead of allowing me to finish ordering. Since there were six people at the table, the constant interruptions made me feel rushed, uncomfortable, and as though we were bothering her. Throughout the rest of the meal, she remained very standoffish. Several requests were ignored, and we had to remind the staff about things we were still waiting on. No one at our table received a refill from our waitress. I was the only person who eventually received one, and even that took quite a while. The entire interaction felt unfriendly and uncomfortable. Spending $182 to feel ignored, rushed, and treated like an inconvenience is unacceptable. I left a note on the receipt explaining that the food was good but the service was terrible. I also left a small $15 tip, only because my mother insisted. Hopefully management addresses the service issues because the food itself was enjoyable. However, based on this experience, I do not believe we will return. read more

I was hoping I'd like the food from here but it just wasn't the case. We ordered takeout and got the supreme eel roll the sunshine roll and the shumai (can't say what protein bc it didn't specify). The shumai was fine - not the best I've had but certainly good. Sauce that came with it also good. The rolls were a complete miss. The supreme eel has the following description online: "include eel, avo, cucumber, cream cheese, yum yum and crunch". Nowhere does it say anything about it being in a soy wrap nor does it mention Kani salad (crab imitation salad). The roll had the TINIEST portion of eel and was completely overwhelmed with cheap kani salad filler and cream cheese. Gross! To make it worse the soy wrap was literally the worst I've ever had. The second roll had sliced fish on top and this wrap was literally thicker than the meat was. It was like a giant chewy thick tire around the roll. It was so hard to eat, slimy, rubbery and made my stomach turn. I felt like I was trying to chew on a live squid with how tough it was. This roll was a total disappointment - I ate 2 pieces and it went into the trash. The sunshine roll was slightly better but barely. This description was accurate, it said it included fried shrimp, avocados and cucumber and was topped with tuna, salmon and yellowtail. There were a few issues with this roll: first the fried shrimp was almost all fry and no shrimp. The breading was so thick and tasted so strongly of oil. Completely ruined the entire roll. The rice portion was massive it was overwhelming. The balance was not there. Then to the fish on top - it tasted and smelled fine but was a bit too translucent/shiny for my liking. Just didn't seem the freshest. Taste wise was a bit bland. We ended up eating the fish as sashimi and discarding the roll since the shrimp basically ruined it. Overall, we spent almost $60 just for the bulk of it to go in the garbage. I am not impressed with their sushi. If you want fresh fish, look elsewhere. If you're fine with fried cooked or cream cheese rolls, this might be okay for you. read more

Amazing once again! Clean and fast service. Our server was friendly. Food was delicious! We had the Kens roll (its a bit spicy-but yum!)and the crazy dragon -has some spicy hits but Kens roll was more spicy. Our miso soup and house salad was on point. The tempura shrimp and veggies were yummy. The Yellowtail sashimi was very fresh. Our last time here was a while ago and they haven't lost their touch-after 7 years. I went today and got the "best roll" It was extremely mediocre. I asked for the salad but received miso soup and it tasted burnt. Soon as I paid the man wiped the table while I was still sitting and got crumbs on my legs and that felt awful. I would never recommend to anyone or go back. read more

I really wanted to love it. I've heard quite a few good things. Their sushi reviews were all good & we got their hibachi. Our gyoza came out cold but It really had a good flavor. I got their filet & chicken hibachi. The meat was cooked good & also had good flavor. My veggies were still pretty crunchy. I prefer mine more well done. I would ask for well done. The rice didn't have much flavor but I did add their mustard sauce to take it up a notch. Overall it was just okay. Maybe I need to go back for their Sushi menu. read more

i'll start by saying the food tasted good. we shared vegetable tempura, each got a ginger salad and soup, and our meals. I'm not certain if service was bad because they were busy and understaff but it took probably 10 minutes of being sat before a server even looked at us. the food came out without a long wait, but our server didn't really check on us. we had to catch a random employee if we need drinks refilled or even the check. My husband's serving size was reasonable for the price (the stone pot dish) but my dish (the teriyaki beef) was at most 4oz of steak... if you take the sauce off the plate they served very little food despite almost being $20. Other japanese place I have been probably serve twice this for the same price. The restaurant is really beautiful decorated and i enjoyed the vibes, just wish it were better service and better pricing. read more

The sushi rolls were very well portioned and the quality was top notch. The crab Rangoon roll was incredible, the Gyoza and Shumi were very good. If you come I 100% recommend the Crab Rangoon and the surf and turf roll. It was incredibly well priced for everything. Without tip it came out to less that 100 bucks for 10 things. Dinner date with my college son, these times can't be beat. He wanted hibachi but Shogun has gotten so run down that we decided on Sakura Blue. I'd eaten here years ago and liked it but forget about it being tucked away in Shelbyville Plaza. We were greeted and quickly seated near a large party. A bit loud as we tried to converse but manageable. My son ordered a crispy shrimp, cream cheese, avocado sushi roll to try and teriyaki steak with vegetables and rice with ginger salad and the broth like soup. I ordered chicken teriyaki with vegetables, rice, and the salad and broth. Our food came in a timely manner and was fresh and delicious! Vibrant colorful veggies, a delicious teriyaki sauce not crazy salty, and tender pieces of chicken. Delicious! Pricing is even better than some other local spots and the food and service very good. No "show" or hibachi table to sit around but the food quality seemed way better and we enjoyed the time catching up without the hoopla of a hibachi performance. Service was a little slow, but we weren't in a hurry and they were busy. We were so impressed with the food we had. We started with Shumai for an appetizer. It was really good, but wish there were a little more that came with them. I had Bibimbap for my meal and it was so filling and delicious. It came with soup and salad as well. They've remodeled and upped their offerings. Highly recommend the new style sashimi special. 9 pieces and you pick three different fish. We had tuna, white tuna and salmon. All super fresh and delicious. No rice. A bed of high quality lettuces with sesame ponzu dressing. Good ginger house salad. My friend suggested this place for dinner since we were all craving sushi. I had always noticed it next to Trader Joe's but never thought about stopping in. My friends ordered wine and hot sake. Love that you can easily share the sake with your table! Each person can take a shot in the small cup they give you. My friends started off with salad with the ginger miso dressing while I opted for miso soup. Loved it! The soup was nice and light and the tofu was cut pretty small. I have issues with soy, so I'm glad they didn't put too much tofu in it! My sister and I split our meal. We got the Yaki tori chicken from the appetizer menu, which was skewered with carrots and onions. We also shared the fish hat specialty roll, which had shrimp, scallops and crab, and a nice kick of heat. It was suggested by our server. My friends also got sushi with shrimp and I think one with tuna? We all enjoyed, although I thought the sushi was just alright. Definitely better than Kroger sushi! We've been here several times since our first visit and it's hands down the best sushi place in L'ville. We've eaten at many of the local and high-end sushi/hibachi restaurants and this place has never failed us on food and pricing. I was not blown away the first time I got take out here. The sushi was not bad but it also was not memorable. However, my husband and I recently came here on a rainy day for lunch and the dine-in experience was much different. The staff is very friendly and though the restaurant is part of a very busy shopping area, the inside feels much cozier and intimate. We had the salmon roll, the pop pop lobster roll, the tuna lover's and Ken's roll. Everything was very fresh. We also got a Bento box with teriyaki chicken and it was all delicious. While it may not compete with some of the fancier sushi places in town, it feels reliable and comforting and that seems just as important. read more

Sakura blue is A sushi establishment located just off Shelbyville road in a shopping center in the Saint Mathews portion of Louisville Kentucky. About a mile or so down the road from the malls off that area. Upon taking my oldest daughter on a sushi daddy daughter date yesterday afternoon after a dr appointment of hers i stumbled upon the sushi place called Sakura blue. My daughter is a big fan of a fern creek sushi and hibachi place called sake blue. So I figured maybe this is there sister site called Sakura. I was wrong. Similar names and both sell sushi but they aren't related. However, it was still a really good sushi place and environment. Much smaller and cozy then other sushi places. The decor is kinda limited but still has an existence. We received very fine service from our waitress on our visit. We decided to just go with 3 sushi rolls. We got a spring roll, a surf and turf and a crazy dragon roll. I will not eat some of the things on the spring roll so that was strictly for my daughter. She said of the three it was her favorite roll. I ate off the other two rolls. To me the surf and turf was very good. Steak was tasty on it and it had a nice crunch and taste for the shrimp portion. The crazy dragon was solid for me. Had a very spicy kick to it. I'm not a huge fan of spice so while it tasted good still I only ate a few and focused my attention more on the yummy surf and turf. Overall me and her had a nIce evening. She has been super into sushi the last few years and she recently got me into trying it to the point where I'm not sure I can say I'm a "sushi sensei" like the yelp badge states. The biggest draw about this place: location. Right next to Trader Joe's, Nordstrom Rack, and the malls. The sushi is...okay. Like it won't blow you away, but you won't be disappointed, either. I've been a handful of times, and each time has been good enough that I've wanted to go back. The service here is stellar. She ordered our drinks before we even sat down! The other lady realized that my 4 year old wouldn't want his soup very hot, so she took the initiative and brought him ice to put in it! The sushi came out quickly, and the two ladies working checked on us numerous times to make sure everything was okay. Only "complaint" is they missed me needing a refill. Wow I LOVE this place!! We were seated immediately at the sushi bar, which was awesome because we could sneak a peak at the chef cutting a fresh salmon! First off, the staff is so nice. We were greeted by anyone we saw and thanked by everyone when we left! We started off with house salads with their ginger dressing. The salad was very fresh, no wilted lettuce to be found. The heart attack appetizer was better than imagined, it was phenomenal! Definitely a spicy dish, but came out hot and full of flavor! I cannot believe how great it was! We also ordered two sushi rolls, one Philadelphia roll with tuna and I believe the deep fried roll we chose was the Happy Sunday roll. It was a salmon and cream cheese deep fried roll. It came out hot and everything was so fresh. Much more fresh than other sushi restaurants I've been to!! The restaurant was rather small but very clean, they had hand sanitizer out all along the sushi bar, which I really appreciated. I went in the restroom and it was also very clean and nicely decorated too. Things like that matter to me, it lets me know that everything is clean and well kept. I cannot wait to return!
