After my adventures in North Kohala, I found myself hungry and not knowing where to go. Driving around, and searching on Yelp, Sakura popped up. What a great little hidden gem! Freindly greeting, the girl told me to grab any table I wanted. So I took a larger booth...LOL! Ordered a cold Sapporo and the seaweed salad to start. I also ordered some inari, which I thought were a little small compared to other places. Their furikake fried chicken with this delicious coconut mayo was so good! I also had the signature Sakura roll...spicy tuna and crab with avocado in pink paper...great presentation. The staff works together and everything came out in a timely manner. I'd give 3.5 stars if I could. Food was good, service was good. They were able to accomodate our large party in a separate/private room that was great since we had a toddler with us! There were some items only available for takeout so my husband was a little disappointed since what he wanted was on the takeout menu... We were craving sushi one evening last month while on vacation. We were primarily staying in the downtown tourist area, but decided to venture away from there and try this place out. I am glad we did. They restaurant was still busy at 7:30pm, but we obtained seating for the 5 of us fairly quickly. For those who will be happy to read this - they practiced good covid protocol. It was not overburdening or irritating, but should make the more "concerned" feel comfortable. We ordered up some rolls, with two in our party ordering soups and tempura on the side, as well as a couple appetizers. I did not make any notes about what specific rolls I ordered, but I do recall the names of Godzilla Roll, Alaska Roll and I believe the Snow White Roll. I also ordered several separate Nigiri items. All I can tell you is that I enjoyed each and every item on my plate. Not a ton of rice and each one had its own distinct flavor profile. My wife ordered a Volcano Roll and something else. She is not fond of spicy hot foods. She raved about the Volcano Roll. The servers were very Johnny-on-the-spot with us; and from what we observed - with everyone in this packed restaurant.They were running around like chickens with their heads chopped off. On our last night on the Big Island we went to another restaurant in the tourist district that we had already enjoyed eating at before. They were packed and had a 45+ minute wait. We bounced and returned here, to Sakura. We got seated in a timely manner, ordered up and pigged out one last time before our vacation came to an end. Same great service, same good food. I always enjoy eating at Sakura, Nice environment, great food for a good price. But today I was a little upset and couldn't understand why they couldn't honor my request. We had a nice dinner , and I asked to order a to go oyako don buri and requested if they could put the rice in separate container because it wasn't going to be eaten till later. She came back and said we can put the rice in top but not in separate container. I offered to pay to even out the rice separate and she we can't do that. Like you seriously just lost money because you didn't want to separate the rice. Like is it that hard? So I said can I order it with no rice and order a side of rice? Answer still no. Like wow! Sakura is one of the best sushi restaurants in Kona and it's the one we patronize most often. It has both take-out and in-restaurant dining, and is observing all the expected protocols during the pandemic (e.g., take your temperature, all servers wearing masks, patrons wearing masks when not eating, etc.) This was the third time we've dined here during the pandemic, and every time was great. Normally we order one of the boats which are really good values and enough food for the three adults usually in our party. This time, though, we had a gift card and so we splurged on ordering a ton of stuff a la carte. so we got to try some items we hadn't tried before. Almost everything we had was great. In the fantastic category: Beef Tataki (appetizer -- very tender & super tasty), Yellowtail Jalapeno (with Ponzu Sauce -- I never eat here without ordering this), Spicy Tuna Jalapeno (delicious -- fried like a popper with cream cheese and spicy tuna inside), Godzilla Roll (all I can say is yum) and Salmon Sashimi (like butter). In the "very good" category: Shrimp & Veg. Tempura In the "ok" category: Beef Teriyaki (medium rare -- was a little tough), Samurai Roll (Spicy Salmon, Spicy Crab Meat, Avocado & Tempura Crumbs -- truthfully we didn't love this one and wouldn't get it again given that there are so many other super yummy things. This was our dinner on 11/28/2020 at 5:30 pm. We loved it all so much we're going back tomorrow night and I'll try to take some decent pictures. I kept forgetting to take a pic until we'd already decimated whatever we'd ordered. All of that food cost $137 plus tip which I think is a good value for great sushi. The PS for this review is: When I review restaurants here on the Big Island I sort of grade on a curve. There are sushi restaurants on the mainland and a couple on Oahu that are in a whole other category of fantastic. If they were 5 star, Sakura would be 4+. But that's really not a fair comparison. I wholeheartedly recommend Sakura. I'd also advise you to make a reservation for dinner given the social distancing requirements of the COVID situation. read more

My siblings and I tried 3 other sushi spots today, hoping to find the best one and Sakura is the winner!! This is the only spot on island we've found that mashes their tuna, our fave! I am very impressed with this restaurant during COVID. They have taken precautions if you are dining in, as they will take your temperature first. This makes me feel safe and secure knowing they are taking such precautions. I've see them as well wipe down the tables thoroughly and social distance people within their capacity and also sanitize the menus. Will definitely return to this place. read more

I hate to give 1 star, this place felt like a hometown hero. I ordered uni and it was food poisoned. Extremely rank taste and smell. Similar to a honey bucket. The texture was slimy and decomposing. I immediately spat it into my napkin. It did not taste right or feel right. I was not upset, I just felt the workers should be aware. I calmly told the server that I thought the uni was rancid. She seemed very busy and not ready to handle this news. Who could blame her? She was very shocked. When she came back from the kitchen the chef said the uni came in fresh this morning and walked away. It was a little disappointing because they didn't offer to take it off the bill or even acknowledge the problem. The rest of the meal was fine. This was the best experience eating Japanese cuisine that I have ever had. I came in with no real expectations of what I was going to experience. My wife and I are on our honeymoon and thought some teriyaki or katsu would be a refreshing meal for the evening. We found Sakura on Yelp and decided to give it a shot, not knowing what to expect since we are looking for foreign food on an isolated island in the middle of the ocean... and oh boy, the "beef teriyaki" I ordered was divine. It was more fine steak grilled on cast iron atop onions and drenched in a sweet and tangy teriyaki sauce. The first bite was tender and hot, with just the right amount of spice to make me forget that I wasn't on an island just a little bit more west into the Pacific. Good food and service. Waitresses were attentive and responsive whenever we ran out of water and always help take away our cleared plates. We ordered the lava flow roll, eel avo cucumber roll, lover roll, ninja roll, and futomaki. They were all so good and had the perfect amount of rice to fish ratio. We also had the Nabeyaki ramen which had the perfect fried egg on top and delicious shrimp tempura on the side. The ramen was alright. Delicious sushi! Visited on a Thursday night during happy hour. Their happy hour special was a get one chef's special roll, get another 50% off. It wasn't that busy when we visited, less than half of the dining area was occupied. Interior is nicely decorated, and has a nice eastern atmosphere (nice change of pace in Kona!) Everything was very clean also, which is always a big plus. They only accept reservations for parties of 8 or more. Service was very friendly. We had our 5 month old with us and all the workers were doting over him, it was so cute. We were well taken care of the whole night. They checked on us often and there's also a call button at the table in case you need to request service. Food was delicious! We ordered the Sakura boat and it fed the two of us well. Comes with miso soup. We also got the furikake chicken because we heard good things about it and it did not disappoint! This Japanese restaurant is okay. I feel like it's a typical Americanized Japanese restaurant with a lot of sushi rolls. We had an unfortunate incident where flies landed in both of our foods. The staff were nice enough to make new ones for us. I got the udon and thought it was rather mediocre. The noodles were a bit stiff. The soup was a bit bland. Ikura was okay. Sushi Boat!! ONLY $47!!!! If you like any kinds of raw fish, get the sushi boat. The flavors of the fish are extraordinary. You can tell they're fresh off the water and straight to the restaurant. All of the sashimi and nigiri on the boat was delicious. Along with the roll it comes with. I didn't try any of the rolls because I was so in to the boat. The price was great as well. This place is decent. Ordered 6 rolls, they were tiny, 6 pieces of sushi each. They were bland and hardly any fish in them. The tempura was good. Soup was good. The chicken katsu was very underwhelming as well as the chicken teriyaki. I swear they cut two onions into one dish. Overall not impressed with the restaurant. So close to fresh fish I expected better. We have better in Washington. I would recommend going to Safeway and just buying some of the fresh poke if you want fresh ahi.
