We made it 1 hour before closing and was able to get sushi! A lot of sushi! We sat at the bar and got the kapolei boat. My husband enjoyed his usual Jack on the rocks and I enjoyed a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon (Kendall jackson). I was going to get sake but there was too many choices to choose from I was being indecisive. A lot of fun and loud commotion in the back of us but we came for the sushi. Very nice restaurant ! Beautiful decor inside and outside of their restaraunt has a great welcoming vibe! Songs being played were popular hits as of today. Wait time from check in/ reservation was additional 30 minutes. My reservation was for 7:30pm and the gentleman told me wait 5-10 minutes as they set it up. We didn't get seated until 8:15! That was horrible my kids was already becoming restless waiting. You think by RSVP everything would be set to go with a few minutes wait, this was a bad wait!!! The RSVP was set up for the hibachi grill side. The restaurant has three seating options, by the grill, booth, or sushi bar area. We sat towards the back of the restaraunt that looks like a private room. That was nice! Inside had two grills and each grill seats for 8 people. Our waiter Neal could've been a better server. He barely checked on us and when I wanted to order rice for my child I couldn't even find him, not even the busboy. Keep in mind they use walkie talkie to communicate so the busboy couldn't even tell me where he was. The chef ended up helping us. I didn't ask the chef first as he was cooking and doing a show for the guests so I didn't want to bother him but glad he offered to help. Our chef was great!!!!!! Didn't catch his name but he said he is from Florida. He did a great show and would include my kids in part of it. Food: our food was okay. Started off good then ended to an ok note. Overall, would go there for the show and sushi, but as for the food cooked on the grill, I am not too sure. All chefs are different so the amount of seasoning and sauce varies, unfortunately our chef was a great entertainer but the steak and salmon I got was disappointing. First, the food is REALLY GOOD! Our teppanyaki chef this time (Colin) was entertaining, considerate, and most importantly, a great cook. Okay, unfortunately this restaurant is run by children who probably don't talk to each other during dinner, so they think nobody else should either. Music was SO LOUD that the server had to come back a third time just to get our drink order (he couldn't hear us). We asked them to turn it down, but each chef comes to the grill with his own boom box, so it's not only loud, there are 6 different sound tracks going at once! We made reservations 1 week in advance. When we arrived at the restaurant they told us they couldn't find our reservation. So we had to wait and wait outside until we received a call from a restaurant employee asking if we were still going to be there for our reservation. We told them our name was not in the reservation list. She then said it was. Fortunately, we did not have to wait because they apparently had our name on a completely different list. There is lack of communication, organization and customer service. On the same topic, while waiting I heard two other parties complaining of the same issue with reservations they made and the restaurant said their name was not on the list. My husband and I had dinner at Sakura Teppanyaki Sushi at Ka Makana Ali'i Mall right before the pandemic hit, and overall had a good experience. Upon walking in, you have the choice to sit by the sushi bar for sushi, donburi bowls, and bento boxes, or the teppanyaki side for Aoki Teppanyaki style grilled food and entertainment by the chefs. I ordered a fancily decorated Chirashi bowl, and my husband got sushi and rolls. The food was decent, and the cocktails were tasty. The staff were courteous and friendly. Unfortunately at the time, our servers kept messing up orders and bringing out the wrong orders. They were apologetic about the mistakes and made up for it by bringing extra goodies. Sakura is a great spot for dates; or nights out with your friends. Dinner time tends to get loud and crowded however, so if you have young children, plan to come early when the restaurant first opens. When we feel comfortable dining at restaurants again post pandemic, we will be back at Sakura again or order takeout. read more

This is not at all a food issue. It is an issue with staff that doesn't know how to estimate a wait time. Walked in and told it would be a 20-30 minute wait. One hour later I asked how much longer of a wait and was told a table is opening up and we were next. Thank goodness because we are hungry, it's now after 8pm. The table opens up and they seat a party of 16 that had reservations. They then proceed to tell me it will be another wait. We left I did try to make reservations earlier in the day and was told no need for a part of two. They don't make reservations for that size party. How low can a place go for food quality? I ordered the 2 combo steak and shrimp and asked for the upgrade to Filet Mignon for $4 more. For $32.00 I got cafeteria quality food served on a big plate almost like a plate lunch. The shrimp was prepared similarly in which it was precooked and then doused with sweet Teri sauce. The dinner salad just consisted of a very simple salad mix, a thinly slice tomato and dressing, nothing else! Even the miso soup was served in an extra shallow bowl and of course it was cold! And they had the audacity to present their bill with a minimum suggested tip of 18%??? Our family was seated almost immediately after checking temperature and signing in for COVID-19 tracking. We went on a rainy Sunday evening around 7 pm. I had a sushi roll and my husband got the teppanyaki and we shared a shrimp and veggie tempura. Service was fast and staff was very friendly. The restaurant was clean and food was decent. We came all the way from town cause this was the halfway point for my mom. It was a going away brunch for my family. My mom was going on her way to Egypt and my aunty is going back to Korea. I made reservations two weeks in advance for 12. Not only were we all separated on different tables, we had to basically either walk or yell to each other. That is how far they put us apart. Was so hopeful to have another good place in Kapolei that we were excited to try Sakura, & sadly we will never go back. The good point: The Service. Service was very good, prompt, not intrusive, & friendly. The bad points: The food. Per my professionally trained sushi chef friends, sampling Tamago is how you assess a sushi chef's prowess, as it is the first thing they learn & it takes the longest to master, plus they are expected to come up with their own spin on it. The Tamago at Sakura was over cooked, rubbery, sliced entirely too thin, & overly sweet - solidly the worst I have had. The same for their Unagi - over cooked, sliced too thin, & drown in overly sweet sauce. Genki Sushi (the "McDonald's" of sushi restaurants) actually does better sushi then we had at Sakura & for a far lower price. The other 3 dishes we had all seemed to be very sweet as well (the agedashi tofu sauce was cloyingly sweet & very thick in consistency). Maybe an attempt to "Americanize" the food? Not sure of the intent, & it is not at all authentic Japanese style. There are so many fantastic sushi & teppanyaki places on island - I could not in good conscience recommend this place to anyone. read more

We got here and asked to do teppan...we were being walked to our table when the host stopped to talk to another worker. We got the impression that they didn't want to sit just two people at a teppan table so we asked to be sat at a regular table. We were able to order from the same menu...which is good and bad. Good because I can get what I went there to try, but bad that I had to pay the same price when I clearly was made to feel uncomfortable about going to the teppan table. The style of this restaurant is similar to Tanaka of Tokyo where they cook your food in front of you on a hibachi grill. My friends and I decided to try this place since we love Tanaka of Tokyo and it's way closer to home. We went during dinner time (6pm) on a Monday. It wasn't very busy at all and we were seated right away for our party of 7 (+2 kids). They have a good selection of items on the menu, but we mainly came to try the hibachi entree. I ordered the hibachi combo with chicken and steak. We also all replaced our regular rice, for fried rice (an extra $2.45). It came with a side salad and miso soup. Our meals also included noodles and veggies. Overall it tasted ok...Definitely not like Tanaka of Tokyo. They flavor of the sauce used to cook everything was pretty good, but there was just so much sauce. Our shrimp was a bit overcooked and chewy, and our steak was not cooked medium as we had asked (it was well done). Our miso soup also wasn't very hot, but warm. I did enjoy the fried rice and the salad (it had a light ginger dressing that was yummy). Our meal also came with two dipping sauces. I ended up mainly using one that tasted like it had ginger in it. The entertainment was great. Andy was very funny and we had a great time with him as our chef. He would go a little over the top sometimes on the jokes, but it made our dinner very entertaining. This place just opened up not too long ago at Ka Makana Mall next to Foodland Farms and Pet Smart. Lots of free parking at the mall and it's in a good location. For the price that I paid for dinner ($28), I much rather eat at Tanaka of Tokyo. I may come back to try their sushi and their hibachi for lunch as it's way cheaper than their dinner prices. read more

Went here for an Anniversary Lunch with my wife on Saturday. Food was on point, can't complain about that, Chef was extremely friendly and great at the Tepenaki station. Server did his job as expected, took order, brought out the appetizers and drinks as expected, nothing extra about it. This is when it gets weird and just plain unacceptable. I tipped our Chef Cash for being an awesome entertainer and just a down to earth kind of guy. When we got the Bill we paid with a CC, when it was brought back for the signature- Before even getting to sign it, our waitor is trying to explain to us that he has to tip the chef and if we don't tip him, he has to use his own money out of his own pocket. So I was gonna tip with Cash regardless, while signing he's standing over to watch if I put a CC tip. As I put the pen down and reach for my wallet to get the Cash, he reiterates the whole speech of how if we don't tip him he has to tip the Chef with his own $$. Basically he is telling us he needs needs and wants us to tip, which I was gonna do with Cash, but now that he's basically demanding it. Now he did nothing extra to make our Anniversaryunch anymore special then an ordinary customer, did his job as expected, ut demands a TIP... Let me just say this, TIPS are earned and not guaranteed just because. It's situations like this that makes me hate the while mandatory TIP (Gratuity added)when you have a bigger party. In most case with bigger parties the servers aren't the best cause they "guaranteed " gratuity already... As we were eating Lunch, we were discussing having my daugters 20th bday Dinner there with the same Chef (hosting 20 guest). After this incident, we were like we ain't EVER coming back here. Couldn't decide where to take sis for her Birthday, then the night before ran across Sakura at Ka Makana Ali'i on yelp...could not believe this restaurant was in Kapolei!! My sister had an amazing time. The service was top notch, food amazing, Atmosphere is beautiful, relaxing, classy & very clean. The Chef gave us a compliment seared Ahi appetizer. The shrimp tempura & mix veggies, deep fried Oyster & crab skin are made traditional Japanese style. This place is a hidden jewel and I'm happy it's in my back yard. The only thing I hope they add in the future, is Japanese bento style menu, adding chicken katsu, miso butterfish, tonkatsu. Check them out, you can thank me later. read more
