Gonna say right now, This restaurant has some pretty nice sushi but the service is really quite awful. A group of friends and I called to make a reservation for Sakura after the convention, the lady on the phone told me that since it's full they didn't know unless we go down physically and check. Now that is bizarre, but since we were hungry and because this Sushi is lauded as "the best in Lancaster" we did so. It was so cold outside but we dropped by and As expected it was packed. but not many people were waiting, so I asked them for a time estimate and they said 20 minutes. Because we were yelled at for "keeping the door open" we decided to warm up elsewhere and told them we'd be back and if they needed a name. They waved us away and said "Come back in 20 minutes!" We came back 17 minutes later and there was still no open tables, we decided to wait. Myself and my sister inside and the rest of my group of 5 waited outside in the cold. Another 10 minutes pass and Then a large group we havent seen before was seated before us and I went to inquire. The Waitress yelled at me that they were waiting for 10 Minutes and that they wont seat us unless our whole group was here. And shocked and appalled I retorted that we waited for 20 minutes and my friends were OUTSIDE in the COLD. And HAVE BEEN for 10 minutes. The Lady looked furious, pointed at me accusingly and said "FINE, then THEY wait". Not wanting to deprive this other group (of which its no fault of theirs) I replied that you should let them have it but let my other friends wait inside before they catch something but the Lady once again just yelled at us to get inside or no one gets a seat. We quickly went in. Safe to say she likely chose NOT to be our waittress. The Waitress we did get was polite and nice but not very efficient. We ate the food, enjoyed it, but my younger sis and I were still shaking from being yelled at by a Waitress/Host? who treated us like garbage. Why they dont take names for wait times is an anomoly, Heck even fastfood restaurants give you a number. That Lady is in luck though, The waitress that replaced her was much nicer and the food was better than average. Which is good or else things would have been ugly. I am so incredibly pleased with my experience at Sakura I had to share. If you have a gluten allergy or sugar sensitivity/allergy, this is the spot. The staff is kind, friendly, and takes dietary needs very seriously-- just talk to your server and tell them your needs. I was able to get pad Thai made gluten and sugar free. That may sound boring to some, but for me it was heaven, since I cannot eat sugar. Oh, and they have brown rice! The atmosphere is so incredibly relaxed. Dimly lit, nice soothing smooth jazz music, tea lights... The works. Phenomenal for a date night, a surefire way to impress any classy lady that enjoys Asian food. They have sushi here, but I have yet to try it, so unfortunately cannot review it. I am confident, however, that they would take the same pride in providing sushi to your dietary specifications as they did providing Thai food to me that I could eat without getting sick. So, as sushi options are kind of (well more like severely limited) in the Lancaster area I was a little weary of trying out the only sushi joint in downtown Lancaster. They have no competition so how hard would they have to try? With there website is currently down and having only three reviews on yelp I was little weary of this place. However, once again, my assumptions were wrong. Sakura is a tiny and quaint restaurant located in the heart of downtown Lancaster. The service is friendly and the food is delicious. I go here for lunch during the work week. They have really cheap lunch specials (think a meal, plus a salad or soup, plus rice for around $7.50, or two sushi rolls plus a salad or soup for around $6.50). The food is almost always ready when they say it is, if not, they seat you down and offer you water and speak very nicely to you. The restaurant is BYOB, so take advantage of this lovely restuarant for a nice and cheap date! read more

Great place for tasty sushi with a great atmosphere. Looking for a meal with my friend the other night, I chose to go to Sakura because of two reasons. A) They were still open at 8. B) They have great sushi. We both got two rolls and shared them between us. They have a great selection of rolls from cooked rolls, for those with a little less experience with the Japanese delicacy, to great rolls for those who enjoy the fully raw experience :) The atmosphere is really great, low lights, great place to sit and talk. The service is great, however I would say that it would benefit you to listen closely because some of the service has strong Japanese accents. (Which makes it far more authentic.) One downside is the fact that soft drinks do not have free refills, but I usually just get water anyways so it doesn't really sway my opinion much. read more

I don't recommend ordering food for delivery from Sakura, and absolutely do not use their online ordering service--it's not reliable. (The website faxes the order to the restaurant, but Sakura's fax machine wasn't working when we ordered. Heaven knows where your credit card info ends up.) After calling the restaurant to check on our order one hour later and discovering it was never received, we re-placed our order on the phone and were told it would be about 20 minutes. It was just over an hour before it arrived. The delivery girl (and her driver/boyfriend?) claimed they had some other stops to make before delivering our dinner, and thus, our hot food was sadly cold. When we called to complain, we were told the order should have come directly to us, and we were promised a discount on the bill, but that didn't happen. That being said, the food was tasty. We had sashimi, sushi (nigiri and maki), an avocado salad, crab rangoon, and miso soup. I was strongly tempted to order one of their Thai curries or soups, but that will have to wait for a visit to the restaurant--if I ever feel up to risking more poor service. read more

Hands down the best sushi and Japanese food I've ever tried! Not only is the food AMAZING and the sushi is so fresh but the service is incredible. The workers there are so friendly whether you are just ordering take out or sitting down to eat. First a caveat -- I ordered online, and the order was placed with them having 50 minutes still 'open for delivery' -- possibly that influenced things. That said, I will not be ordering from them again. The Pad Thai had clearly been made quite some time ago, and had the broken noodle consistency you see from a large batch that has been stirred up a few too many times. It was actually rather tasty, but was clearly the dregs of a batch, and nowhere close to fresh. The sushi was... ok. It was nothing impressive, but, this far from the ocean, that's not unusual, and for sushi from this area, it was about normal. Not very well assembled, and not very flavorful, but at least it was normal sized. And then there was the Wonton soup. The Pad Thai had clearly sat, but that's nothing to the Wonton soup; before I even decanted it, I could see thru the container that not a single noodle was intact, the chunks of meat were congregating in the bottom. The consistency of the noodles was best described as 'Slimy.' And there was about a 3 inch long gray hair I encountered near the end of the container. I'm guessing they've moved from a previous location, as it looks like I reviewed them 2 years ago, and was not impressed. (Had I recognized that this was the same place, just at a new location, I would likely have NOT tried it.) Delivery times have been increasing to over an hour and I live 4 minutes away. I have communicated the frustration and nothing has been done on there side to remedy the situation. Since moving to Lancaster from NJ, we have not been able to find great sushi. Hands down this place makes great sushi, Kani salad, and rice. They made sure to get our orders correct and things we wanted substituted they did it without a problem. The only thing I could complain about is paying a dollar and some change for each spicy mayo. My roommate had ordered from this restaurant previously and really really loved the food, the quality, and the value for the prices. But this review is about the delivery experience..... Coming from a house full of people who have ALL worked in the service industry, this was a pretty ridiculous experience. When the delivery man arrived, he called my roommate's phone and asked him to come down 2 flights of stairs to get his own food because he had "other deliveries" to make that night. This guy complained about the distance of our apartment from the restaurant; though we obviously felt bad our housing isn't our fault. He said he would complain to his boss and refrain from delivering to our complex again... unless we could "hook him up" monetarily. Yes, he asked for his own tips before my friend even had a chance to pull out his wallet. My friend tipped this guy over 20% (which I personally would not have done at that point). He looked at it smugly, and basically scoffed at my friend. Either this guy was too dull to calculate percentages, or he expected a Rolex for being such a saintly messenger of food. After that charming exchange, my roommate heads back up the stairs and bumps into one of our neighbors. But the Sakura delivery guy decided to literally interrupt their conversation, because somehow he magically has enough time to buy a cigarette off of our neighbor, despite his alleged "other deliveries" begging his prompt attention. So you tell me..... exactly how important would you feel, as a customer, to be spoken to that way by a high school dropout lazy motherfucker pushing 30, who prefers to spend his barely-earned tips on cigarettes, while on the clock? 1 star for this place. Just having back surgery two weeks ago, i needed to get out of the house. My friend Kevin and I had been talking and sushi came up. I was having a Friday night movie night alone and was craving sushi.So i got some sushi and came home and watched Finding Nemo.....yes....thats messed up...funny,but messed up....So anyway,we went online and picked out what we wanted and then proceeded to walk down the street to pick it up. Two Kevin's....$72.00 worth of sushi...the sushi didn't stand a chance!!! I was extremely impressed with the remodel of Sakura. Very chic and beautiful, but not overly obnoxious. The sushi was really good! My only complaint was the sushi wasn't rolled really tight. I noticed when we picked it up, they had a younger man rolling at the sushi bar. He's young and ya gotta start somewhere i guess. Other than the slightly sloppy construction of the sushi, i had no other complaints.The fish to rice ratio was on point. I had 2 spicy salmon rolls....decent heat,good flavor,i also had 2 Philadelphia rolls...again good ratio between salmon to cream cheese.I also had gotten the Valentine roll which was good,but the one at another sushi restaurant i go to makes the best one. my husband and i were staying in intercourse last weekend and couldn't stomach another butter-soaked "home cooked" meal. it was kind of late (8ish) and everything was closed anyway, so we decided to drive into lancaster, joking that some japanese would really hit the spot. as soon as we arrived in downtown, we were amazed to find a japanese place that was still open and looked pretty darn good. the menu has everything from japanese to chinese to thai, which is usually a bad sign. we both ordered japanese so i can't vouch for the other stuff one way or the other. the service was more than pleasant (a bit slow, but we were in no rush and the waiter kept coming out and apologizing) and the food was great. fresh fish, good tofu and veggies, great salad, good soup. average prices. no complaints at all. solid 4-star food, plus a star for being open when we needed it. thanks sakura! read more

I love Sakura. I really do. The spicy roll combo is perfect if you're requiring an entire mountain of sushi. "Asian Fusion" means if you're not in a sushi mood, there's always pad thai or hibachi. I dine here quite often and there's always something new and different to try. The only thing keeping me from 5 stars is that service is hit or miss sometimes. Portion sizes and presentation seem to fluctuate. I have been brought the wrong dish on occasion, special requests can go unhonored. The atmosphere is perfect, except for the odd choices in stations on satellite radio that always cuts in and out and can be kind of annoying. Three people ate all agreeing on a three star rating. Ambiance ok, the red lights were neat but it was very dim and hard to read the menus and freezing when the door opens. Chicken habachi, basil duck and the green curry were all excellent. The wine must have been kept in the back alley, our bottle was brought out to us freezing. Not good. As for the service, they tried. There was a language barrier but when they tried to make up for it they came off as pretty aggressive. from the moment we entered we received attentive service. the restaurant was not very full for 7pm on a weeknight but we enjoyed the quick service which was great. husband ordered gyoza to start and then golden phoenix and spicy yellowtail sushi rolls. i had a california roll, shrimp tempura and TNT roll. husband reports that all of the raw fish in his rolls was exceptionally fresh tasting and he enjoyed everything, as did i. sushi was nicely presented on the plate and the atmosphere was relaxing. we used a $25 gift certificate from restaurant.com and the server knew what it was and how to handle -- and the service did not suffer for it, like i have encountered at some other businesses. only weird thing/slight criticism is the charge for doing BYOB. they have their own bar which makes me question why they would allow byob at all, but they also charge a $10 cork fee for wine and $1/beer fee if you byob. these fees seem really out of place in lancaster and i've never encountered that type of thing except at really fine dining. we'll definitely be back to try other kinds of sushi and we'll also be armed with another restaurant.com coupon! read more

This is a nice restaurant. The menu can be a bit confusing with Chinese, Japanese and Thai cuisine all together. The sushi was 3 out of 5 - standard. If you want good but basic this is your place. I would recommend for lunch, better bang for your buck. read more
