So I took my mom up to Ojai for her birthday this weekend and decided to try this place. Was kind of hesitant thinking that the prices would be outrageous but actually the prices were amazing. And the sushi was probably the best it should be ever had in the entire world. I'm very picky on my Sushi and how fresh it is and we ordered the golden tiger and the incredible roll which is a baked scallop roll. Both in the picture is shown below. The owner even gave us two complementary mini cheesecake bites which were amazing as well. The prices were absolutely amazing the menu was incredibly huge incredibly huge array of different roles and pretty much anything you can order as well as Korean food. This place sucks !!! The first time half my order was gone .. second time the said 20 minutes and took a hour and 10 minutes third time they have my order away to someone else !!! After waiting a hour with a damn pager I go up to front and my order is gone ... wtf was the pager for ??? The service here is very poor. They do not have enough cooks which makes the food come out at different times. Half of our parties food came out at 1 hour and 30 minutes and the other half came out after 2 hours and 15 minutes. There is no management and the service is all over the place. I was craving good authentic sushi and found this hidden gem in Ojai. From the minute you walk in you are greeted by friendly sushi chefs. I sat at the sushi bar. Between my bf and I we ordered the Cherry Blossom, yellowtail neck, salmon skin salad and albacore salad bowl. I would return to try one of their sushi rolls which is extensive on their menu. Sakura has really gone downhill in the last 5 years. I've frequented Sakura for years always hoping they will turn it around. The quality of their food is poor. It honestly makes me feel terribly nauseous after I eat it. The prices have gone up considerably and the quality has gone down. The rolls are mostly rice and barely any fish. The last 5 times I've ordered take out, they always get something wrong. Today, for example, I ordered a hand roll combo and they gave me a cut roll combo (which is more money). I have an avocado allergy and even though I explicitly say this when I order, they always seem to put avocado in the rolls anyway. They've also forgot to put soy sauce, ginger, wasabi, and chopsticks in for my to-go orders. With so few options in Ojai for sushi, I have gone back to sakura time and time again but today reminded me that I've had enough and have to just save my sushi cravings for when I go into Ventura to avoid feeling sick and ripped off. For the price, there are too many other great restaurants in Ojai to spend your money at. read more

Came here on a whim with my brother, and what a good whim it was! The place is cozy, and has an Izakaya feel to it. I ordered a Sexy Spicy Salmon Skin Roll , and Chirashi bowl. The salmon roll blew my mind, and totally rocked my world. It wasn't overly spicy and the tempura topping was crunchy and not one bit soggy; no real need for soy sauce for this one! The chirashi bowl was done like a jewelry box, I was hesitant to actually eat into it because it looked so nice. However, biting into it, it's the best chirashi bowl I've had in over a year since I left Hawaii. My only gripe... the miso soup could of been done a little better, but overall this food and service is great! Stop on in! read more

I stopped in here on a whim today for lunch. I ordered my usual favorites - cucumber salad and a tempura shrimp crunch roll with soy paper. The staff was attentive and friendly and my food came out with average speed. The cucumber salad was fairly boring - fresh slices of cucumber swimming in a clear dressing with a bite to it. The tempura crunch roll was tasty and I'd definitely get it again. One thing that was kind of odd though, usually this roll comes with eel sauce on it. My roll did taste like it had eel sauce on it, but when I asked the female proprietor later for some extra eel sauce, I was brought a small dish of sauce that did not taste like eel sauce. It wasn't as sweet, nor as thick and tasted much more strongly of soy sauce. This was a big enough disappointment to me I would have knocked another star off for it, but then I saw I had somehow not been charged for my bowl of brown rice, so my enjoyment of my visit stands at 4 stars. Oh, it does disappoint me that they only have Pepsi products on tap here. I really don't like them compared to Coke products and that brought my meal down somewhat. read more

Definitely a hidden gem!! This place is so delicious and completely unassuming. We could tell almost immediately how good it would be based on the continuous carry out orders that occurred while we were there. People love Sakura! The gyoza (potstickers) and softshell crab were wonderful. The softshell crab was lightly battered and not heavy like most places. And the sauce was really unique. The tuna on fire appetizer was excellent and also unique. Our favorite, however, was the hamachi Kama (yellowfish collar). I love Kama and I'm always looking for a place that has it on the menu. Sakura not only exceeded my expectations but it was priced way below other kamas I've tried (with loads of meat). I would come back and have the Kama frequently if I lived in the area. The rolls are lovely and presented nicely. I love the variety of tempura rolls and the staple rolls. We absolutely love this place for quality sushi and unique plates. I ordered an Ojai roll (requested for it not to be fried) and was very satisfied with the flavors, presentation, and quality of fish in the roll. We also ordered a Mango Tango Roll which proved to be surprisingly refreshing. The mango complimented the salmon wonderfully! There were also complimentary cheesecake bites offered at the end of the meal. Good sushi for a decent price. I plan on going back next time I'm in Ojai and craving sushi. read more

The food was fine and the price was great, especially during the lunch deals. BUT the service was abysmal. From having four people in our party be told that they had terrible fakes (they were all real) to the orders all being wrong. I have never had service this weird. We were asked if we got drunk and smoked weed. Haven't had such bold claims thrown my way ever. Also the dishes were dirty and still had lipstick on the rim of the soup bowls. Originally I marked for 3 stars but have now changed it to 4. It seems that service has improved by a lot since the last time I wrote my review. So good job to the Sakura team! Food has always been alright. It's not a fancy restaurant, and price is pretty modest for what you get. Sushi is pretty good, I love the incredible roll! It truly lives up to its name. Combos are huge however, you guys can save some money by cutting back on the hibachi portions, too many veggies!! It's fun to stop by on the weekends when the place is at it's peak and people are laughing and sharing sake, it's like another family!! That was my new review of the establishment. From here on is my opinion of how servers are being "robbed". On a recent visit after finishing my meal and about to head out, my server was in the back or off the clock or something. So I asked another employee if I left a tip, would it go to my server? They told me a mixed answer and stated that "technically yes, but our tips are pooled." I've worked in the restaurant business before in my college days and hated how tips worked, so I decided to prod more being the nosey person I am. I found out that they not only pool their tips, but the sushi guys are also in the pool? And they told me they get MORE from the pot? Now that does not seem right to me. Surely tips are meant for the service, right? I get you prep food before opening and make the food, but come on. You have a bigger hourly salary. (At least you should, talk to your boss if you don't.) And like stated before, tips are for the SERVICE, you have no business taking more tips than servers for tables you didn't even bat an eye at. I honestly feel like your servers deserve better. However, like I said, this is all my opinion. By all means, their food is good and the service is great! read more

Sakura is my go to sushi place. They have the best tasting sushi and everyone there is so friendly. One server that stood out in particular was Ryan. He is great at his job and makes sure his customers are taken care of. He works as quickly as he can when it's busy and he does a great job handling multiple tables at once. Sakura recently redid their interior and menu and it looks so lovely ! The atmosphere is a lot more inviting and they seem to have more of a direction for their food. They also have a specials menu which is delicious stuff for a discount which is nice ! Their wait staff is attentive and kind, they are able to answer all questions which is nice. Well, we left our once favorite sushi restaurant, Sakura in Ojai. For months, we stayed away, hoping that they would become the great place we once knew. We went back to Sakura tonight and quickly became very disappointed. #1 The place is way too loud. The restaurant wasn't even full, and it was hard to hear the person on the other side of the table. Something needs to be done to correct the sound volume. #2 Turn the A/C on. There is no reason your costumers need to be dripping in sweat. #3 The staff. Hire people that will listen and look at the tables every now and then. Less talking with employees. Maybe they were too busy I don't know, but are unable to provide the customer care this place once had. Personality, smiles, friendliness - we don't see this anymore. The food is amazing. Very tasty & for the most part, the food was at the table in a timely manner. For the above reasons, we will continue to stay away. Maybe in a few months we will try again. read more
