Came here with two friends recently, and we were one of the only tables there. Friend #1 ordered two rolls, Friend #2 ordered the Sakura Roll and tamago nigiri and I ordered the Sakura Roll as well. Friend #1's first roll arrived, and at least 5-10 minutes later, our Sakura rolls arrived. Another 5-10 minutes later, Friend #1's second roll arrived. Among all four plates, there was only one small serving of wasabi and ginger, and when we asked for more, the waitress told us to finish what we had first. We were slightly taken aback, but finished, asked again and waited another 5 minutes before she finally brought ginger and wasabi. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants, but after this visit I was sorely disappointed. Portions were significantly smaller, service was slow and the quality of the fish wasn't as good as it used to be. Time to go somewhere else for Japanese food... read more

Very small place that you might miss, even if you grew up around Alameda. I am a prime example. I went to High School down the street and have never knew of this existence before until last night. My friends and I stopped by for Sake bombs (wasn't my idea folks). It was a little ... err... very quiet. So we ended up just drinking sake. And beer. Silently. Between the 4 of us. But hey, who's complaining right? The waitress sure wasn't! She was super friendly, and it seems like the place is family owned. We ordered the Salmon Sushi Pizza to share too, since we weren't planning to order but just wanted something to go along with our drinks. It was about 10 bucks and was absolutely delish! Who even thinks of these food ideas? Salmon Sashimi + Sushi + Pizza? A+ for that one. I did however, also get a sneak peak at the menu and realized how cheap the items were compared to other sushi places around here. Keep in mind there are like 6 sushi places along park street.... so you have options. None of them have sushi pizza though! So Booyah! Bento boxes start at 5.95 for 1 item. 2 items is 7.95. Sushi rolls look to be about 9-11 bucks each. Still not my favorite sushi place in Alameda (I will remain silent about my favorite sushi place to prevent debates), but it's good enough for me to come back one of these days! read more

Even though the majority of my relatives live in SoCal, we hardly ever see each other. Life and other excuses get in the way. My dad and I have cycled through a couple of new jobs in the past few years, and it never seems like the right time to put in for vacation once it has been accrued, and just head down there. My relatives, though, are really great, and one of my aunts has really been pushing for us to be more intentional about making time for family. During the Memorial Day weekend, a number of relatives made the long drive up to the Bay to see us (lola - Tagalog for grandma - aunt, uncle, younger cousin, older cousin, her husband, and their two dogs - Turbo & Subie). We met up at their hotel and decided to have lunch. Most people were craving sushi, but I couldn't for the life of me think of a place that I could recommend (please don't take my Elite badge, lol). My older cousin ended up finding Sakura and she called to secure a table for 12 (all the LA relatives plus my aunt from my dad's side, my parents, my two younger brothers, and myself). Once we had our reservation down, we drove over. The thought of searching for parking in/around Park Street usually gives me chills, but I wasn't driving this time around, haha. As it turns out, Sakura is located across the street from a parking lot where you can pay ahead with a the parking attendant. It might be kind of confusing because it's also a Bank of America parking lot, but there are spots there so no need to drive around and around for metered street parking. This restaurant isn't that large, and it's probably a good thing since we only saw one waitress and one sushi chef/cook. It's pretty amazing that they can "hold down the fort" - while none of the dishes really wowed any of us, the sushi seemed fresh and the portions were quite generous. They also managed to keep all of the tea and water glasses filled throughout the course of our lunch. Some Japanese restaurants don't serve bento boxes during the weekend, but Sakura does. I got one with California rolls (I know, I'm a total Philistine) and beef teriyaki. After partaking of calamari and gyoza appetizers, plus my aunt's caterpillar roll, I barely made it halfway through my bento. It was great to catch-up with my family and share a meal together after such a long time apart. The music isn't intrusive and the lighting is pretty flattering, too, haha. I whipped out my DSLR and had a chance to practice. I'm not in Alameda a lot, but at least I now have a go-to sushi spot! read more

Yelp, you never steer me wrong! We were walking by this place last night and the heat of the day made sushi sound great. We looked at the menu. It was limited but had a GREAT price point. Service: Unremarkable, but acceptable. Decor: Hole in the wall, and you are well aware of this fact. For $27 Dollars we got: Ikura (Salmon Roe) and Tobiko (Flying Fish Roe) Nigiri-- Some of the best Ikura and Tobiko I have had in a while (and I get it all the time) The fish eggs were SO fresh. They were SO tasty and not fishy. The rice balance was perfect. The rice itself was the right density and flavor. Mmm! I give this item 5 Stars! 1 Item Bento Box (only $5.95!)-- I had it with the Miso white fish (red snapper? Yellow tail? One of those...) It was quite tasty. A little bit dry but over all a satisfying fish experience. The miso wasn't overpowering. It was a pretty big slice, I didn't really finish every drop. A little extra $ got me seaweed salad instead of regular. Chicken Udon-- Soft fresh noodles and a mild but satisfying taste. read more

I lived in Alameda for most of my life and yet I've never heard or came across this place until now. I wasn't missing out on anything. Didn't think it was anything amazing. If you're just looking for rolls with a ton of sauce this is the place for you. I don't trust these kind of places to have fresh quality raw fish. read more

We got the gyoza, ichiban roll, and golden roll. The gyoza were good and the golden roll was average. The ichiban tasted like the batter was burnt a little, and the cooked salmon inside just tasted strange in the roll. It also barely had any unagi, just a tiny piece inside, but was supposed to have unagi on top. I would have given 4 stars but our service was pretty slow with only 2 other customers inside. The interior of the place is very nice, seems newly updated. The menus are pretty as well, but the restaurant is a little dimly lit for my taste. read more

I really wanted to enjoy my dining experience here as it would add to my list of available places to visit in Alameda. However, I was somewhat disappointed. First of all, I will preface by saying that we went on Labor Day Monday and most other restaurants were closed. So this place may have been impacted by this and perhaps the staff was overwhelmed or the regular staff was not available to work that day. We entered the recently remodeled store and I very much liked the color scheme. Unfortunately, no one greeted us and we stood around waiting for someone to acknowledge our existence to let us know how long the wait would be. After some minutes of standing around, we approached them. (btw, we saw a group of 3 young ladies who seem to have been seated by never got serviced so they left without eating) Our small group finally got seated and it took at least 10 minutes or more to come take our order. I don't want to belabor the point but it then took forever for the food to come out in an order. The one salad did come out 1st but the hot items made it to the table WAY before the sashimi platter. The miso soup was very watered down. The curry for the katsu was really "light" or as my friend said, "bland." I had to agree with him. My teriyaki salmon was fine. Other points, on a hot day the position of the store front puts it in directly heat. They changed the windows to be smoked glass but it was still a bit warm inside. This probably works on usual colder days but it would be nice if the instilled better ventilation or ceiling fans. So the overall dining experience during busy hours was lacking and it may behoove them to hire up during these times. Food wise it was just okay. It may be better at other times when the staff as a whole has more time to devote to patrons. read more

3.5 stars! Small little spot that's easy to miss. Cheap prices, good bento boxes and sushi rolls, mediocre sashimi, good portions and not much for customer service. I ordered a 3 item bento that was $10.99 and asked for sashimi, chicken teriyaki and salmon teriyaki. For sashimi and beef teriyaki they charge an extra $1. The teriyaki was good but the sashimi tasted like it was taken out from the freezer. Not the best sashimi so I wouldn't come here for that. I also had the black dragon roll which was $7.99 and to my surprise was really good. Their rolls were all under $9.99 which the exception of a few specialty rolls that ranged up to $14 each. I want to return and try the other rolls since my friend would only eat cooked food. Bleh! When I visit a Japanese restaurant, my first testing dish is always Chirashi sushi because I get to sample various type of fish, taste the sushi rice in its purest form and how the chef presents the bento box. When my chirashi box came, after I saw two pieces of cooked broccoli, I was a bit worried. Why was I worried? Because from my experience, when the chef put any kind of cooked food in chirashi, the overall quality of the bento box never turned out good. It might be just a coincidence but that's how it has always turned out for me. I tasted the fish first. I was pleased with the quality. It's pretty fresh and kind of melted in the mouth. So I moved onto the rice. Unfortunately, my liking stopped there. The rice was warm/hot as if it's right out of the rice cooker, and completely lacked sushi vinegar. I immediately started to move rest of the fish away from the rice because the warmth would have changed the taste. I am a little bit surprised of all the high remarks here. Maybe other dishes are better but I can't imagine any sushi made with the rice I had would be any good. I'd consider giving it 2 stars just because I think sushi rice is that important but that's probably a bit too harsh considering most of the people don't notice it. read more

I feel because the staff is so friendly but the food is pretty bad. We ordered the two item chicken bento dinner, California roll, salmon and shrimp temporal roll, and two Godzilla rolls. Over $70! First off, everything tasted like vinegar. The sushi rice which is probably the most important was made with too much water and it was soft and tasted like vinegar. Such a shame! California roll was just an imitation crab stick with avocado and rice. Tasted like vinegar. I forget the name but the salmon and shrimp tempura again tasted like vinegar. Then tempura was super bland. The two item bento dinner was quite small for the price and consisted of a couple slices of chicken and rice along with the California roll. The rice again, tasted like vinegar. The chicken was pretty tasteless. The Godzilla rolls I'm sorry to say, we're absolutely disgusting. We couldn't eat them. Deep fried canned salmon flakes? I literally think they dumped vinegar in the middle of it. They were gross. On a positive note, the miso soup was very good. Have a foul taste in my mouth while I'm writing this. We heard about this place from friends and had been wanting to try it so since they just re-opened about a week ago after being closed for a few months for remodeling, we decided to go there for lunch. The dining area is spacious but the lighting in the daytime is on the dark side so it was hard to see the menu unless you are under a track light. We ordered the miso tofu bento, 3 item combos of chicken and beef teriyaki and gyoza and beef and salmon teriyaki and sashimi. All in all it was good for a first time there but the beef was not sliced as beef teriyaki should be, which should be in slices as it was a bit stringy. We will have to try some other items on the menu next time. It seems like the sushi is popular here so that's what we will have next time! The sashimi tasted fresh! read more

The S.O. and I were in Alameda and went to this sushi place randomly. We ordered a plethora of rolls - none that really stood out, but the sushi lover's selection was amazing! The chunks of sashimi were good, fresh, and flavorful. My personal favorite was the albacore sashimi and nigiri! I also really enjoyed the salmon carpaccio - definitely recommend! Where do you go when it's a Saturday night and Zen has a half hr wait? Sakura! It's much, much smaller than Zen down the street and La Pinata next door..but the wait will be only half as long. It's the kind of place where as you walk in, the entire staff greets you and they all look genuinely happy to see you. They've got all kinds of rolls here, but I stuck to the simple stuff - spicy tuna and gyoza. My friend had the udon since it was cold out. We also ordered some tempura to start. There's plenty of combos if you're indecisive, with nothing over $15. Despite the full tables, the food came out in a timely manner and the service was awesome. Our teas were constantly refilled and they came by to check up on us twice. With so many sushi/Japanese restaurants in this area, I have to say the quality of the fish is not the best, but the service is. That's enough for me to give it four stars. read more

***Review is not for Sushi**** We had just the dinner meals. I got the chicken Katsu curry as my wife got the beef teriyaki. Both come with miso soup and salad/broccoli. The good: 1. beef was cooked to a medium and quality was pretty good. Not too chewy and cut up into nice sized pieces. Teriyaki sauce was good too. 2. Service was good, the waiter let us switch out the salad that came with the meal for edamame so that was nice of them and we still got broccoli with our meal 3. Chicken Katsu was cooked well, nicely fried and breaded but without any sauce lacked flavor. The bad: 1. Curry that came with the Katsu! It was bland, watery, and looked like a soup more than a curry. I ended up eating my katsu with the teriyaki sauce from my wife's beef teriyaki plate so that the chicken would taste better... Service was....okay....I guess. I felt like she could've been a bit more attentive. But the dishes were creative, aesthetically pleasing, and good seasoning. Try the salmon sushi pizza! I thought it was pretty awesome. They also have fish liver here! I was so excited since many Japanese restaurants don't carry that dish. Thank you Sakura for being distinct! As for entree I don't really remember what I ordered...cherry blossom? Sakura blossom? Fish was fresh and beautifully wrapped. Although skimping a bit on avocado. Bf got chirashi and he liked it. & He's like chirashi king of bay area, he gets chirashi at every Japanese restaurant we go to. I especially loved the sushi rice. Chef knows how to make yummy sushi rice! But I really appreciate the artwork the chef dedicates to his dishes. It takes skill, patience, and passion to carve a cucumber into a flower and all the other small decorations he puts into his dishes. Personally, I enjoyed my meal a bit more because of that. This tiny little Sushi spot arguably has the best sushi in A-Town. The best place to sit is by the bay window, but tough to get during a busy lunch or dinner since the place is so small. Regardless, the sushi is always fresh even after multiple visits. No dip in quality! 2 item bento box with sashimi is excellent! The interior atmosphere needs more work however. You can smell the old wooden floor and tables, which interferes with the sushi experience. Great place for a take out order! Hopefully the owners can upgrade the interior. They seem to have remodeled inside! Came here on a friday night and the place was completely empty. Word must not be out they're back open. Ordered the chirashi (my staple dish at any sushi restaurant), sakura roll, rock n roll, and tiger roll. The chirashi comes with miso soup and salad. The sashimi in the dish was good. It also came with alotttt of rice, so it would fill even the hungriest person up if they ate the whole thing. I do wish the sushi rice that came with it was a bit more seasoned though. It tasted close to steamed rice. The rolls were standard. The Sakura roll was pretty, but I wasn't a fan of the cilantro in it. This is place is conveniently located down the street from my office. I was craving sushi so I thought I'd give this place a try since I walked past it so many times. It's very modern inside. I heard they just remolded. I was seated right away. I ordered the assorted tempura and the forest roll. The tempura was very good and crispy. I got an onion, squash, potato, broccoli and 2 shrimps served on a bed of cabbage. The forest roll was delightful. Seaweed and rice on the outside. Inside cucumber, avacado and mango. My family's favorite restaurant, hands down. They just finished renovating so it is twice as big and 100 times prettier now. They also have more vegetarian and vegan rolls to choose from. Yay!!! I have been bringing my three kids since the youngest was a baby, so don't be shy about bringing children, since they are great with them. My kids used to get edamame and miso soup and rice, and have eventually branched out to ikura, unagi donburi, cucumber rolls and shrimp tempura. My husband gets the dragon roll and albacore. My favorite is the crazy horse roll, which is vegan. I always get two so I can eat one later because it is THAT yummy. read more

Never again. I was a regular here. But tonight I saw this restaurant in a whole new light. When I walked in every table was covered with filthy dishes and there was a dirty smell in the air. I ordered after convincing the waitress to clean one table for me and my diet coke and edamame came out relatively fast. Then I SAT for 45 minutes in this room with all filthy dishes stacked high on tables with no food. Eventually I got up and said I have to leave. I've got other things I have to do tonight. The waitress said oh it's coming, so when I stepped up to the register and glanced over and saw that some other food was being prepared behind the sushi bar I realized my food was not coming. The waitress actually charged me $5.75 for the Diet Coke and edamame. I started this endeavor at roughly 8:15 and its 9:15 p.m. now. I still haven't eaten dinner but I did pay $5.75 for a Diet Coke and a small bowl of edamame. How this could have gone better: what I found out from the waitress was that the restaurant had run out of rice. A sushi restaurant ran out of rice. Had I been warned when I walked in I would have simply accepted this and found another place to eat. But they ignored the fact that I was a regular customer, so regular that they knew my name. And to make that normal $21.50 off of me they offered to let me sit there for almost an hour without any food. read more

Aesthetically horrible. Poor stock. Old meat. This place was recommended to me by a friend, so I checked it out. However, when I walked in, I was tempted to walk out. It was a hot day, and it was crazy hot inside Sakura. They have no AC. I sat at the sushi bar, and first noticed that there were empty plates in it, so they weren't fully stocked on fish. Then I noticed worse things-- the lettuce all around the fish area was wilting, there was a browning avocado in there, and the worst thing for me-- lots of fish in plastic wrap. Really? Can't you at least put it on at the end of the night if you absolutely have to? Bleh. Looking through the menu, the prices seemed pretty cheap for the most part. I got to try the seafood salad, beef udon, salmon roll, philadelphia roll, and monkey roll. The monkey roll I ended up with after I felt like I was done ordering, and the waitress suggested one of their most expensive rolls. I said okay at first, and then saw the Monkey Roll and decided to try that instead. I asked about a particular sake they had on their menu, and they said they were out, and pointed out quite a few others they were out of. I said oh okay, no thanks, and then the waitress asked what kind of sake I liked, described what they had, etc. I said no, its okay. Then she asked if I wanted some beer, and named what they had. Again, no thanks. Trying too hard on the upsell for me. The seafood salad wasn't horrible. There wasn't a whole lot of seafood to it, and it seemed to have just a lot of mayo dumped on top, but it tasted fine and was presented well. The worst part about it was the preparation. While it was being made, the sushi bar is thin enough that I could feel each chop of the knife vibrate through where I was resting my arms on the table. Kinda irritating. While waiting for the rest of our food, I noticed that they had a lot of posters of different sushi and sake. They didn't have most of what was depicted in the posters. Boo. The salmon and philly rolls were average. The fish was actually much fresher than I had feared, but still not quality. There was no old fish flavor or anything, but there wasn't much flavor at all. Not even a hint of buttery flavor. Meh. The monkey roll was deep fried, and had i think spicy tuna and maybe scallop. It tasted okay, but it was really just a mushy spicy mess inside. Couldn't really differentiate what was what. The beef udon smelled amazing at first, but lacked much flavor. Also, the beef was poor cuts, with lots of grisle, and it had a distinctly old flavor. Like it had been in the freezer for a while. We had a lot leftover because we didn't really enjoy our food much. The total bill came out to only $33, so that part was nice. I guess. After telling my friend what happened, he felt bad and said I must have come on a really off night. Even so, my experience was bad enough that I don't think I'd come back. First off, Park street off Alameda is poppin' on Friday nights. Alameda is one of those hidden cities that has that small-town kinda vibe. As small as it is, the locals seems to thoroughly enjoy their small town living. =) We were craving for sushi, so my BFFs and I came here for dinner after shopping for some FUR at the Alameda Vintage Faire. Parking is tough around here. Save yourself some time and park at the parking garage. (50 cents an hour! We just about died when we saw that!) Sakura is a hole in the wall restaurant - fits no more than 22-24 people max! A table for 4 is pretty tight. So if there's 4 of you that's kinda rotund, I suggest you separate yourselves into pairs. Menu is limited but it's probably a good thing cuz it cuts down on deciding what you want. Appetizers, bento boxes, and sushi rolls were offered. I had sushi. All I can say is that it was cut clean, bite-sized, and generous in portion. Like, instead of 6 pieces, I got 9-10 pieces. And most importantly the sashimi was fresh! Prices were totally reasonable. Service is slow but there's only one person manning the tables and one sushi-master! I'd definitely come back for more! Infact, I did the next day. =) read more

Beautiful resturant, certainly an upgrade from their resturant before the renovation. I love their dark hardwood floors and tables and the atmosphere is friendly for family and children. The service was agreeable. However, I was not entirely satisified with my lion king roll. It just was wasn't what I expected and tasted overpowering to me. I've been here twice and have only tried a few items, but of the few I've tried, I really enjoyed. The sashimi plate was generous and the fish was fresh. From what I recall, it was made up of decent portions of maguro, shiro maguro, hamachi, and sake. The Salmon Pizza was the most interesting and my favorite so far. Don't let the name scare you. There'll be no doughy crust, marinara, or mozzarella on this pizza. Just fresh slices of sashimi prettily arranged over a crispy rice cake drizzled with spicy sauce and sprinkled with tobiko. The Lion King roll was good, as it it is in most sushi places. It would be difficult to ruin a baked california roll with salmon and rich sauces on top. The Lion King is pleasantly spicy here, so it packs a bit of a bite which sets it apart from others I've had before. I usually go during a weekday, which is quiet. But service is always prompt and attentive. My teacup never goes empty, which is a big plus. :) read more

This little sushi restaurant on Santa Clara is a place to try. Compared to the other overprice sushi places in alameda, this place has unique rolls for a decent price. My two favorite items to order are: Seafood salad-variety of little pieces of sashimi with a homemade spicy dressing over pickled cucumbers. Light and refreshing. Salmon Sushi Pizza(roll)- salmon topped with tobiko over a deep fried rice patty. The different textures are phenomenal. read more

Absolutely wonderful in every level. This has been my "GO-TO!" sushi joint for 12yrs, it's simply amazing! It's the freshest, creative, tastiest sushi on the island. Consistently the best sushi I've had on the island, or anywhere! THE SERVICE AND HOSPITALITY IS THE BEST! My family and I came here for dinner on a Monday night. We've been here many times so the lady pretty much know what we order. After about 20 min, some of our foods started coming out. Mainly the appetizers like fried squids, raw oysters, and seafood udon. 10 min later, my dad's sashimi came out. Another 10 min later, my sister's lion king roll came out. Like I said we've been here before and all their sushi rolls does take a little bit longer to arrive. Plus, there were only one server and one chef with a full house. I asked the lady if my roll was still coming and she said yes. Honestly I think she forgot about it, because it's been over 40 mins. But my family insist I should just wait a couple more minute before cancelling it. YES! My golden roll finally came out, but it wasn't what I expected and not worth that 40+ min wait. Now on to the foods: - Their sashimi's aren't the freshest, but OK quality. - All their sushi rolls are a bit smaller than any sushi place I've been too. - Golden roll was plain. - Lion king roll was OK, had better ones. - Avocado bomb was tasty. - Seafood udon was a bit too salty. - Raw oysters were to our liking. - Fried squid tasted like how it's suppose too. All in all, I give this place a 3 stars for food, another 1 star for the lady. If you're looking for a quick sushi fix, then this is your go to spot. Just don't come when it's busy, or else you'll be waiting for a while. I will be back Sakura. read more

The Bento box lunch prices hit the spot! I enjoyed the chicken teriyaki bento box and spider roll. The restaurant met my expectations and did not disappoint. Parking in downtown Alameda is a challenge. I would eat out there more if it was easier the find parking and if parking was always free. I think that is why the restaurant was pretty quiet for a weekend afternoon. I would like to try the teriyaki salmon Bento box item next time. read more

This is my go to sushi spot. The sushi chef, Sunny, is super nice and is great at remembering names. Not that that's relevant to how the sushi tastes, but it's definitely welcoming. I always get the sunny roll and sweet shrimp. Others that I've gone with have always liked what they ordered: Sashimi, veggie rolls, etc. If your a sushi snob, maybe not the place for you. The waitress is not the type to constantly check on you. So if you want more food or the check, flag her down. Otherwise, she will let you eat and talk to your friends in piece haha. Our usual sushi place was temporarily closed, so we walked around until we wandered here. Didn't have too much expectations, but immediately felt like a Chinese restaraunt with sticky tables and cheap prices. And cheap prices they were! We each ordered two special rolls, huge portions, but all in all paid comfortably under 20 each. Definitely get the godzilla, because its delicious and fried and you never know what exactly you'll get! We also tried the Sakura roll, Lion King and one of spicy tuna specials (maybe kamikaze?) And they were all decent and pretty, but not satisfying. Finished the meal with (very) full stomachs but knew w could have had better sushi elsewhere. No issues with service. read more
