My family and I came for dinner tonight to celebrate a birthday. We came with two babies and the restaurant accommodated us with high chairs and great seating for our hibachi dinner. There were only 3 cooks and we feel that we got his full attention when he cooked for us and he was so playful with the babies. The food was tasty and flavorful and generous portions. We have tired a couple hibachi places and this place is my favorite now. I think pricing is fair for the entertainment and food we receive. I was very surprised that Sakura sprang up where the 'ol Sizzler used to be oh-so-long ago! Sakura is a Japanese Benihana-style restaurant where your dinner can be part dining experience and part culinary show. It's a large restaurant and that has plenty of table cooking areas. I came in for lunch so I was seated at the side area where the regular tables and booths are. Sakura has a nice lunch special menu with prices that don't break the bank, so I went with that. For lunch there are a selection of bento box style combinations. There's the traditional teriyaki chicken and beef, but you can also get Panda Express style Orange Chicken too. I wanted to see how they handled the orange chicken and so I ordered it. The combo lunch comes with the main entree as well as 6 pieces of California rolls and 3 gyoza alongside salad and rice. I would say the best of the bunch was the salad. It was crisp and fresh with a nice dressing. The orange chicken looked nicely cooked, but I wasn't a fan of the actual chicken inside. It tasted a little rubbery (a common thing I find at some Japanese and Chinese restaurants). The gyoza were a little strange as they were more like puff balls than traditional pot stickers. And the California rolls were of the quality you may find at a grocery store. For the price it was a decent amount of food. And if this was 15 years ago, I think Sakura would be a big hit. But Japanese food has come a long way and I want more quality when it comes down to it. Sakura is okay but definitely not great. Since there isn't much sushi selection in this part of Woodland, I think it might be an ok choice, but step a little outside the area and there are some much better options for Japanese cuisine. read more

We eat at Sakura about once per month and I definitely recommend this place! It's a really good value. The hibachi experience is fun, engaging, and very yummy. The hibachi chefs are charismatic and social. I like hibachi once in a while or for a special occasion. Big portion sizes with hibachi. We tend to get a regular table and either get a few sushi rolls or a bento box. One reason I like this place is the prices and portion sizes are pretty reasonable for what you get. Sushi rolls are (4 star) quality, and you get really big portions with the bento boxes. My beau likes the NY steak teriyaki bento box, which is $24. Staff are kind and helpful, but every once in a while a little slow to check on us. Specifically, ~5 mins after serving us, we wish they checked in with a "how is everything." This is my first time here. We made reservations online and received a confirmation in our email. We arrived and eere told they didn't have our reservation, we showed them our email. The place wasn't busy so they got us in. A nice waitress took our drink orders, then returned and took our orders. My wife and I split our meal because there is so much food. Soup and salad were served right away. (The waitress dropped the tray with our salad on it...ooops) We had the "Spiderman" roll which was very tasty! Since I don't care for seaweed, I asked for a different wrap, they did it with Soyo. It cost $1 extra, okay. We ordered the Folet and scallop hibachi dinner, a beer and an iced tea. It was fun watching the chef do his fancy samurai imitation while cooking. The steak was cooked just right, the scallops were tasty but chewy (over-cooked). They added too much soy sauce to the veggies while cooking. Here is the surprise: Dinner was $86. They didn't tell us that they charged $6.95 to split the plate. They automatically add in the gratuity, in this case it was $12. (They lost out because I was going to leave a $20 tip.) Overall, it was okay. The service was good, the food was average. The sashimi was delicious- it melted in my mouth. My husband had the Sakura teriyaki with steak and lobster and found it absolutely delicious. Stopped for dinner at Sakura Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi in Woodland. I ordered the tonkatsu pork cutlet dinner. The pork was very thin and not thick and juicy like how most Japanese restaurants prepare the dish. The salad had a tasty dressing, but unfortunately the lettuce In the dish was sitting in some water. The white rice was long grain and served in a soup bowl and not a rice bowl. I've never seen long grain rice served in a Japanese restaurant. All the Japanese restaurants I've been to serve Japanese short/medium grain in a rice bowl. My husband ordered the shrimp tempura and udon. The tempura was just okay, but the udon was really bad. The photo in the menu showed a bowl of udon with what appeared to be a traditional clear soy sauce-based soup. The soup that was served with the udon was cloudy and yellow did not resemble the dish in the photo. The bowl contained mostly napa cabbage with some udon noodles and a few slices of paper-thin fishcake. The service is pretty poor. We had to ask for chopsticks. We weren't asked if we wanted green tea or anything other than water. When we left, the gal at the cash register was busy looking down at her phone and didn't even raise her head to acknowledge us or thank us for coming in. While driving to Sacramento to get my weekly ramen fix with my family, we decided to drive by Court Street and Cottonwood to check to see if Sakura has opened yet...and we were happy to find it that it was indeed open. It turns out that today is the third day of their unadvertised opening. Sakura is located where Sizzler had been many years ago. The location isn't prime in that it's not on Main Street and it's quite a way down from "downtown" Woodland but access is easy and there is ample parking. The restaurant was busy but we were warmly greeted when we entered. Within a couple minutes, we were seated. Since we weren't going to eat grilled foods, we opted for a table in a section that doesn't have the big table grills a la Benihana. The restaurant has distinct sections. There is a bar front and center when you walk in. There is a small sushi bar behind it. To your left is the open hibachi area and to your right, separated by glass is a seating area with regular tables. There was a bit of disorganization evident as multiple servers asked us if we had been helped. Since it's only the third day of operations, that's completely forgivable. My first draft Kirin Ichiban was warm. That's not forgivable. Haha. All of the food was decent and what should have been hot was hot and what should have been cold was cold. BTW, my second beer was cold. Nothing was outstanding but nothing was bad. Again, it's only the third day of operations, so they get a pass. The BMW roll was tasty but a bit soggy. The salmon was good. The NY Steak Teriyaki was very good. The California rolls average. The bottom line: It's great to have another good restaurant in Woodland. I recommend trying Sakura. I'll be back. I hope the restaurant gets even better as it matures. read more

After being too crowded at our first attempt at eating at a hibachi table, we made reservations for a Saturday night. We were seated at a table immediately with a family who had been there before (pretty good endorsement for a new business) Our orders were all taken together and all the food is cooked on the one big flat top (which makes me wonder how shellfish allergies are accommodated) and then expertly portioned out to the correct person. Our hibachi chef was very young. He was wearing a black chef's hat. I noticed that the other chefs had red hats. I'm assuming he's new at it but he put on a fun show with his utensil twirling and other antics while cooking our food. I had the salmon, my husband had the shrimp and New York steak combination. He said the beef was overcooked, he had asked for medium and will ask for medium-rare if we return. My salmon had a garlic teriyaki glaze made right on the cook top. Portion size was good, we both took home leftovers. The cost was more than we usually spend on a dinner out but our meal came with entertainment so it was a good value for an evening out. My only quibble is that there was no trash can near the door in the restroom. I don't like touching bathroom doors on exiting after washing my hands. read more

The rice is so simply but beautifully seasoned with egg and soya / sesame ? - super tasty We asked for the steak medium rare and it was cooked perfectly - super tender for the cut it was, they serve a couple sauces with it. The veggies that were served were also super tasty, carrots, onions, mushrooms and zucchini. The chicken was also perfect! To start they served us a salad and mushroom soup as part of the hibachi deal. Both were tasty and the salad had a lovely dressing. We also ordered a side of spicy Edamame it was plenty full and well seasoned. Aside from the excellent food the entertainment from the chef was first class throwing zucchini for us to catch and pouring stuff in your mouth ( don't worry if you're shy they don't pressure you to do it ) it was overall a fantastic experience. Teriyaki chicken in bento box tends to be dry and without the traditional soy sauce mix of soy, honey, sugar etc.. It tastes like it's cooked with a dusting of paprika and a touch of cayenne pepper. There are A LOT of plastic and styrofoam containers used in to go orders (4-5/person). Hoping Sakura seeks other containers that are recyclable and compostable. read more

I like Sakura a lot, which is kind of strange, considering I'm s non-fish-eating vegetarian. My husband (omni) loves it, too. I usually get the veggie tempura roll with soy wrapper, which is really good. I also sometimes get the lunch special with avocado and cucumber rolls, also with soy wrapper. My husband is a big sashimi eater and he really likes Sakura's ahi sashimi. He's also had bento boxes with sesame or teriyaki chicken, which he also really enjoys. We didn't choose the show seating option, it's just not our thing. I want to enjoy my food while eating, not having to make sure my entertainment feels "seen" or appreciated. Anyway, the non-show seating area is tucked away by the bar and kitchen. We ordered from the lunch menu which was recommended to us by other Yelpers. Great recommendation. I had the hibachi scallops which came with a small soup, small salad, amazing rice, and sautéed veggies. Everything was tasty. I especially loved the rice. My husband ordered the chicken katsu lunch which came with steamed rice, small salad, decent sized CA roll, and three shumai. My husband loved the crunchy shumai. Ordered a NY Steak for pick-up, but was served raw steak. When I called to tell them it's "inedible, you literally served me raw meat. I cannot eat this," they offered me a 10% discount. After haggling with them for a while, they agreed to "cook me a new one, just bring the old one back." What they actually did was throw the old one back on the grill (mind you, this piece of undercooked, raw meat has been sitting in the to-go container for nearly an hour), and then threw it back into the same to-go container. Cross-contamination at it's finest, and also, I wouldn't have drove back a half-hour each way just for them to throw it back on the grill. I could've done that from home. This was my first visit in months after I was previously very upset with them for dishonest business practices by having incorrect prices on their menu. They would always claim that they had to raise prices due to the pandemic, but they just had not updated their menu. Displaying incorrect prices on all menus within the restaurant is against the law and I will be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau as well as the Yolo County Department of Public Health. They deserve to be shut down for dishonest business practices and absolutely filthy sanitation standards. They seem to have NO CONCEPT OF CROSS-CONTAMINATION.
