The last few times I've order from Sala Thai, my food was not prepared the way I requested, and the manager wanted me to drive the to return the food so they could remake it, mind you I ordered though Uber eats, my instructions were clearly in the notes and on the receipt so I feel like that is their responsibility to prepare my food correctly, and this has happened more than once so at this point I'm just not going to order from them anymore. read more

I went to get some food to go. I had a lemonade with the lemon in it. I got the shrimp tempura roll and it was delicious. It came with the chopsticks and was a nice little meal before I went out to run errands. It was nice and crunchy I highly recommend this dish. read more

Note: This review is based on a delivery / takeout order, so focused exclusively on the food and not the service / ambiance. Although I was a little hesitant about the less-than-stellar reviews, I was recently desperately craving some Thai food and UberEats had a 30% off deal for this place that was just too good to pass up. And, wow, am I glad I took the risk! I was SUPER happy with everything that I ordered, and it absolutely satisfied my need for a bit of spicy, holy basil-infused comfort in a bowl. I ordered their pad see ew with vegetables and shrimp, papaya salad, and mango sticky rice -- each dish was fantastic, and they had generous portions; this was plenty of food for 2-2.5 meals. I put everything at their "regular" spice level, which didn't seem to be super consistent across their dishes. The pad see ew was hardly spicy, while the papaya salad made me run for a glass of water. The pad see ew was nearly perfect -- it had a great balance of spicy, sweet, and savory flavor profiles, and the noodles were soft but still slightly chewy. The veggies were fresh and crisp, and the shrimp was juicy and plump with a great touch of char from the wok. The noodles were a bit more oily than I generally prefer, but it was still a great dish overall! And the noodles paired perfectly with the light, refreshing papaya salad (requested without peanuts because I'm allergic). The papaya, carrot, and green beans were all super fresh and had a great crunch. They went wonderfully with the salty, sweet, sour, and spicy dressing, and the tomatoes offered a great extra little pop of freshness! This dish takes its spice a bit more seriously than the other items on the menu, so either have a glass of water ready or order it slightly milder level. After a delicious (and slightly spicier than expected) meal, the mango sticky rice was the perfect way to wrap up this comforting dinner. The rice was perfectly sticky but not mushy, and it was sweet, but not overly so, from the coconut milk / sugar. This was all topped with a lovely sliced mango, which was at the perfect level of ripeness to offer a refreshing, natural sweetness as well as a slight sour kick to balance out the rest of the dessert. I also loved the way they arranged the two mango halves to look like a heart -- so cute! All in all, I was thoroughly impressed by Sala Thai! It was not too crowded inside as it was during late lunch timeframe. It's pretty modern inside with seating, a bar, and R&B playing. The menu was extensive and they had lunch specials. I was served by the bartender who was super helpful in helping me select a meal. I settled for the spicy rice/chicken. I opted for very spicy and it delivered to my satisfaction. Just popped by to pick up dinner and was pleasantly impressed with the deliciousness of my food. I started with the fried tofu on the HH menu. These were big triangles of perfectly fried tofu with a soft interior served with a sweet and sour sauce. I loved the panko coating which made these nice and crispy. My review is solely about the food because I haven't actually dined inside but I ordered delivery for dinner. I ordered the dumplings, naked wings, wonton soup, and Goong Krob Kra Prow. The wings and dumplings were the best part of the meal for me. My daughter really liked the dumplings and soup. The Goong Krob description sounded amazing on the app but I found that and the white rice to be very bland. I had to add a lot of seasoning for it to taste halfway decent. I want to start off by saying this is a review for the food only. I did not visit the establishment and sit down to dine. This was delivered to me via Uber eats. It took a total of 25 minutes from the time I ordered it until the time I received it. I live very close. I ordered the Sala Thai dumplings, Wings and the Goong Krob Kra Prow. The items were placed in containers that didn't allow for anything to be soggy as you will see in the photos. I ordered the wings naked, with sweet and sour sauce on the side. It came with six wings, celery and plenty of sauce for the wings. The sweet and sour sauce was really good. I don't know the name of the sauce that came with the dumpling. Frankly, I didn't expect any, but it was a great dipping sauce. They were made primarily of crab, shrimp and pork. Each bite was full of flavor. I would definitely order them again. Lastly, I took a chance with the Goong Kra Prow. I don't usually order shrimp, especially fried shrimp because I'm never sure what I might end up with. I thought this dish was wonderful. The large shrimp were seasoned very well, lightly battered and were cooked to golden, light, juicy perfection. The veggies were fresh and the rice very fluffy. The sauce was excellent and more than enough for both of my meals, because If you look at my plates, you'll notice that I have enough for two. This place is a vibe! Especially happy hour on a Friday. Everybody is friendly and having a good time. They have this fish bowl cocktail drink that is blended so well and so strong for $10. I highly recommend because it will get you on your level. I got the crab Rangoon's which were very appetizing and made with real lump crab meat. For my entree I got the red curry chicken with Thai noodles. I was not expecting it to be fire but low and behold it was!!! Very authentic and full of flavor. This location is located east of the river near the Deanwood Metro. It's in the bottom of a new condition building on a main strip. When you walk in, you'll be greeted by its friendly staff and directed to a table of the bar. It's clean and we'll kept. They offer a great happy hour list of both drinks and food. Their regular menu is big! I ordered that green curry with chicken and it's enough to fill one person. The curry was tasty and the perfect amount of spice. To end, I ordered the sticky rice and mango. It was a good dessert but did have too many coconut crisps on top. Overall, a good experience and fun to explore Deanwood afterwards too! read more

"Sala Tea?" Intro: *disclaimer* I am being generous on this 3-star review because this restaurant is fairly new and I want to give it time to work out the kinks. This is an interesting location for a Sala Thai because the area seems like it's attempting to gentrify with new office buildings, condos, and restaurants. However, it's also a prime location for hood shenanigans. I see potential and I have 3 more Groupons to use, so I'll be back later with an updated review (assuming things change). Ambiance: The place has pleasant decor. It's not huge, but it gives off a spacious feel. There were a few patrons and one large gathering for a birthday. They were playing 90's R&B, which I guess is a fair compromise for most folks. Food: So, I make the ballsy decision to order a green tea as my drink. It turns out that they don't have any green tea. No problem. I ask for a regular iced tea instead. They don't have any iced tea! NO TEA...in the entire establishment! It's definitely not a deal breaker, but Asian cuisine is known for tea, so it through me off a little bit. The Sala Thai in Petworth has these great wings. I don't see wings on the menu, so I ask the waitress if they have wings and they do. However, instead of cooking the wings in a sauce, they give you sauce on the side. The wings were alright, but I really think they should adopt the ones from the Petworth location. The other party with me started with some crab thingies and those were good. For my entree', I got the chicken Pad King, which has ginger, onion, scallion, and mushroom in bean sauce. I was satisfied with the flavor and texture of the chicken, but I felt like the portion was less than I got at other Sala Thai locations. Customer Service: There appeared to be 2 workers there. There were not a lot of customers, but I feel like one girl was being asked to be the host, bartender, and waitress at the same time. We didn't get our plates picked up until it was time to go, but we had room on the table, so it's no big deal. The staff was friendly, but maybe understaffed. In Closing: Kudos to Sala Thai for opting to invest in this location along with Popeyes, Duncan Donuts, and Baskin Robbins. I think it can work. Sala Thai is a good all around restaurant that's nice, yet informal; reasonable quality, yet inexpensive. It'll be interesting to see this place hit its stride and find its identity. I have had chicken curry (good flavor and lots of meat), drunken noodles (a bit too oily for my taste and not enough basil), golden triangle (fried tofu - cant go wrong), and wonton soup (has lots of cabbage and very diff from chinese wonton soup). My bestie decided to treat me to a birthday lunch. She insisted on this place on Minnesota Avenue said they have the best crabmeat ragoons. She raved about the shrimp and crabmeat fried rice. Shoot when she Mai Tais I had blanked out. The service was the only negative maybe they don't know about checking on tables because we had to call them for service if we wanted anything. But the food was worth it. Those ragoons was so light and fluffy they almost floated to my mouth. They use string beets for one prettiest diplays and to counterpoint the ragoon. They were so good. For lack of a better (or really, any) option, Sala Thai serves as the neighborhood watering hole for the Minnesota Ave/Benning Heights neighborhood. Consequently, they do a good happy hour with $3.50 Singhas and $5 crab meat steamed dumplings. The whole Sala Thai chain has certainly slipped since the early days of one basement restaurant in Dupont Circle, but it's dependably reliable, and certainly a step up from most of the local Chinese take out joints. This particular branch has a full bar (complete with picture of King Chulalongkorn) and about eight stools. The menu consists of your Thai standards: tom yum goong soup, larb gai, panang curry, pad thai, etc. It won't rock your world, and it's certainly nothing to go out of your way for, but with so few full-service dining options east of the river, it will do in a pinch. read more
