Sala Thai Street Food had been on my radar for years and I was in the area around lunchtime. After combing through the menu, I'm not sure I get the street food reference in the name. Sala seems like a high quality standard authentic Thai restaurant with a lovely atmosphere. There were certainly apps and noodle dishes you might find as street food, but no more or less than usual. In any event, I ordered the Sala Noodle Lunch Special, which comes with Tom Yum Soup (along with choice of protein) and fried wontons. My only less than enthusiastic comment concerns the fried wontons. They were room temperature, but they were flavorful. I ordered shrimp with the Tom Yum soup. How cool is it that shrimp is even an option? And it was perfectly tender. The soup had that classic sweet, sour and hot flavor. The Sala Noodles were very good. Wide noodles. Thin pieces of chicken. Carved grilled calamari. Snow peas. Sprouts. I could taste terrific char grill flavor, and that's a rare thing in this type of dish. The noodles and chicken had good flavor. This place is so so good! It certainly reminds me of food from my trips in Thailand. The couple that owns this restaurant are so nice too from the moment you walk in. For food, you can't miss with any option you choose. I had the boat noodle which was flavorful and loaded with a ton of meat. The papaya salad was delicious. A crispy chicken was fried to perfection. My second time visiting this place, I got the duck salad and my taste buds were bursting with flavor. I also got the ginger flounder which was fried to perfection in a savory sauce. Drove there on a Saturday night. Parking lot was fairly full. I was a little worried that we would have to wait. It was of course, Saturday night and we had no reservation. We walked in and I was pretty stunned that the entire place was empty, except for us and the hostess/waitress. That was a red flag. But we forged on. Since we were the only customers, service was pretty quick. Menu was a little different. Thai food and some other items like pho and orange chicken, not typical Thai cuisine items. But hey, I understand owners trying to broaden their appeal to stay in business, but that's not always a great sign either. I've been to Thailand and to other places that advertise "Thai street food." This is a fairly standard Thai restaurant menu. No charcoal grilled items or other street delicacies. Thai iced tea was pretty good, served in a cutesy mug. Chicken wings were pretty good. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. Sweet chili sauce on the side. Dinner was looking good so far. And then our mains. Thai BBQ Pork. Noticed my dining companion picking at their food. Generally they are a food hoovering machine, if the food is good. This was not the typical behavior and I wondered why. I asked to sample the food. The meat, tough and not very tasty. Not very good. My own main. Duck curry. I was looking forward to it and was really disappointed. I had my first mouthful, with the duck, the curry sauce and some rice and something was just off. Well, more than one thing. Too sour and wondered why. It was the pineapple. Usually the pineapple counters the spice and the sourness of the curry with its sweetness. The chunks of pineapple were all tasteless or somewhat sour. Come on, this is summertime, you can find good fresh sweet pineapple or at least get them from a can at a local store or Costco. Secondly, like the pork, the duck was really dry and overcooked. Some of the pieces of duck were really chewy. I suspect that the meat probably wasn't that fresh. It wasn't bad but probably was stored in a fridge or freezer and got dried out. The hostess/waitress came by and asked if we wanted boxes to take home our left overs. We declined. If the food had been good we would have either finished it all or said yes and placed it in our mini fridge for breakfast. Asked if we wanted dessert. I'm a huge fan of mango with sticky rice. So is my dining companion. But at the price point they were charging for it, almost $12/serving, I felt like it would be a huge gamble that it would be worth $24, given how bad the main dishes were. If this place is the "best Thai food in Connecticut" as some reviewers stated, I'd probably would get Thai food in Massachusetts or New York then. read more

I only have one other favorite Thai place in the world, which is in Las Vegas. They have blown my mind and I will be back here every week. If not every other week, the roti is perfect. Thai restaurants are not that common to find in CT. This one is definitely worth checking out. The food is very tasty and flavorful. The ingredients seem to be simple enough as the menu mixes a blend of vegetables with proteins and a few different choices of sauces that you can combine with various styles of noodles or rice. The inside of the restaurant is decorated nicely with Thai influences notably placed throughout. Our waitress was very nice about service and extremely helpful with recommendations of food items. I must say that i was impressed with the customer service and it was such a warm cozy feeling when I walked in. My sister and I had the japanese beer Sapporo served in a chilled glass. We decided to order some appetizers , the Thai Wings & Spring Rolls. The thai wings were so crispy on the outside and perfect bite and the spring rolls were tasty wish I had 2nd order as my mom devoured them lol!! My mom entree was the Heavenly Duck, the skin was so damn crispy and she gad her fav jasmine rice served in the cutiest silver bowl. My mom loved her dish and I did too lol!!. My sister entree was specially order extra spicy Pad Tai with chicken. My entree was the Cha Cha Salmon, this dish was delicious. I prefer my salmon medium and it was grilled to perfection and the spicy level was top notch and every flavor just meshed well and the presentation of each dish was flawless. We tried this new Thai restaurant - in a long succession of Thai restaurants in this location. I ordered the chicken mango curry dish asking for the minimalist amount of spice. Unfortunately it was still too spicy for me. The woman taking our order -after suggested maybe a change to yellow curry to cut the spice. I am willing to try it again. I returned last night to the restaurant with family. I tried the suggestion of yellow curry with mango added. It did satisfy the no spice taste that I wanted but I will admit it did not have the same sweet flavor of the original mango chicken. The chicken mango was delicious though. The soup with coconut milk and shrimp was delicious. The orange shrimp dish was fabulous- I plan to get this next time!For dessert we had the fried banana and ice cream. We came in last night on a whim with high hopes from the fabulous yelp friends reviews. We bookmarked it to try because of the excited yelpie buzz. This is a new place in quiet, out of the way location. They are a family run authentic Thai restaurant business relocated from California. Perfect for a busy Saturday night when one has neglected to make any reservations. We found the place in a humble small strip mall. We were greeted immediately upon arrival. The place is lovely and well lit. The small bar is to the left with comfy booths or larger tables on the right. Decor is appropriate and not overdone. The staff is fabulous, listening to our requests, asking appropriate questions and mAking helpful suggestions. Now for the actual food...PeRfEcTiOn‼ we started with Thai chicken wings app. They served up eight small wings with side sauce. Loved it! On to the entreés: "superb pad Thai" (chef specialty) and "ginger lovers" stir fry with shrimp & Jasmin rice. The pad Thai was covered with pancake shaped egg and amazing soft shell crab. It was huge! Hubby actually took much of it home. My ginger lovers meal was wonderful! And, The gorgeous plated presentation? WoW! Alas we were too full to try dessert, though we were intrigued by a beautiful mango creation seen at a nearby family celebration table. After the meal, one of the owners came to chat. "Like a door that keeps revolving in a half forgotten dream" (Sting -Windmills of Your Mind) The restaurant door that unlocks 12E Mountain Avenue in Bloomfield seems to be more like a metaphorical revolving door. That door has opened up into more than its share of restaurants in the recent past. Remember Shuman's Deli? Remember Little Mark's Barbecue? Remember Chiang Mai Garden? Remember Bangkok Bistro? Bangkok Bistro was barely there for a year before they closed and sold to a new owner who opened up a new endeavor named Sala Thai Street Food just two days ago. The physical changes to the interior are quite noticeable -the dining room and bar are quite a bit fancier and glitzier. The front of the house has undergone a huge improvement in the person of Alisaya (one of the new owners) who greeted us with a big smile and chatted with us as we waited for the kitchen to whip up our take-out order. Her menu has quite a few intriguing Thai tidbits other than the usual suspects of Pad Thai and Drunken Noodle. Want an example? Glad you asked - how about Mee Krob (Sweet Crispy Bites). How about Pina Colada Duck Curry (!). How about Banana Leaves Salmon? How about Thai Krapow? Needless to say, the menu is terrific -17 appetizers, 9 salads, 6 regular soups and 6 BIG noodle soups, plus a ton of noodle or fried rice dishes, duck platters, main course entrees, curries, seafood choices, Chef Specials and an eye popping 27 lunch specials with various protein choices. Our take out dinner was three items: 1) an appetizer of Sweet Crispy Bites (Mee Krob) for $9 (Krispy rice vermicelli noodles, sweet tangy tamarind sauce, tofu, and bean sprouts), 2) a Pho for $10.95 (Choice of beef or chicken-based soup with bean sprouts, onions, and basil served over rice noodles), and 3) Thai Boat Noodle Soup for $11.95 (A savory beef broth with Thai spices, sliced beef, Chinese broccoli, and bean sprouts, served over rice noodles). All three were excellent! The Mee Krob was a thick chewy and crunchy blanket of sauced vermicelli noodles with tofu cubes and more crunch from the bean sprouts. It was ridiculously good. My Thai Boat Noodle Soup was a jewel of a dish! Spicy and beefy with tons of noodles and sprouts. Plenty for two big portions, believe me. I rarely bother to write yelp reviews but I have to give this place its kudos. First, it's nicely decorated inside and I loved the sticky rice baskets as lampshades. Nice touch. I had the som tum (green papaya salad) as a starter. I'm a big fan of this dish no matter who makes it, but this iteration was perfect. I asked for it hot and they didn't dumb it down for the white guy. Perfectly balanced dressing that brought the heat. Set a new bar for this dish that I will continue to chase. The server was clearly one of the owners this night. I asked her what her favorite dish was and she suggested the crispy catfish. It was excellent. Delicate fried fish with a Thai curry light sauce, vegetables, and garnished with fried basil. Nicely presented. If I lived anywhere near here it would be a regular stop for me. This is by far the best Thai food restaurant in CT. Not only is the food delicious, the atmosphere is so relaxing and just beautiful. I used to live nearby and discovered Sala Thai by chance. They have a wide menu and surely something for every taste. The food is so fresh and delicious. I can't say enough good things about it. It's extremely authentic. The presentation of the dishes is beautiful and something you should experience. Order the Shumai Dumplings or Chicken Potstickers as an appetizer and you will see what I'm talking about. I can just tell that the owners are extremely passionate about their business. The restaurant itself is very clean, welcoming and the decor is on point. I am saddened that I live so far from here. Well 30 minutes cause this was some of the best Thai food I have had in a LOOOOONG time. They closed that night at 9 we walked in at 820 but greeted and served with the same hospitality as a dinner rush patron. The lady had the biggest smile on her face I've ever seen. LOVE Sala Thai! I came here a couple weeks ago for a dinner meeting and already can't wait to return. My dining companion and I started by sharing the calamari salad with lemongrass, scallions and mint - so fresh, light, and flavorful! I *should* branch out because it's such an extensive menu and I love every Thai dish I've tried - but yes, I couldn't resist some pad thai with tofu. It's just so good here - next time I'll opt for something more adventurous! My dining companion got some kind of chicken skewers that looked and smelled absolutely fabulous. We have been looking for a good Thai restaurant ever since East and West Grill closed. We finally found it at Sala Thai Street Food in Bloomfield. (We tried the other Thai restaurant in Bloomfield, but Sala Thai is much better!) We ordered the appetizer combination and everything was great. The fried shrimp and calamari was crispy on the outside and chewy inside. We loved the sauce that came with appetizer too. They complemented the food well while not overwhelming. True to the restaurant name, the dishes had the charred flavor that often found in street food. It's a great place to sit down and enjoy Thai food. We will definitely come back. read more

We came during lunch specials so which is $8.95 and comes with soup and wonton! They were super accommodating for our vegan diets and clearly highlighted options for us and even gave us a vegan soup as part of our lunch special!
