I'm nervous about this review, because I'm pretty confident I'm not the right person to write this. Let me start by stating up front that I am not now, nor have I ever been, Filipino. This is the first and only Filipino restaurant I've ever eaten at, so I don't claim to have a great frame of reference. Let me also add that I've eaten here five or six times, and to this day I have no idea what I've ordered. But it's soooo good. Everything I've ever had from Salamat Po has been amazing. So I want to speak to people like me who don't know Filipino cuisine- get in there and try it, you'll be glad you did. I generally go there for lunch, which begins with me standing patiently behind several people who clearly know what it is they're ordering, and they're ordering lots of it. While I'm waiting, I stare at everything in the glass case, and usually something new slides out of the kitchen. I might be wrong about this, but I think the food has been different every time I've been there. When I get to the counter, the server always helpfully tells me the name of whatever dish I'm pointing at, but I'm fairly hopeless when it comes to learning these things. The gentleman today was happy to let me sample anything I wanted, but by the time I got up there my heart was already set on something- a beef stew that wound up tasting as good as it looked, tender and flavorful, in an absolutely perfect broth. I also picked up some sort of fried, salted cinnamon plantain dessert that I'll be dreaming about for the next few nights. I found the portion size to be excellent, with a healthy helping of stew on a bed of rice- more than enough to fill me up for lunch and still have a few bites to share with a co-worker. There are still some things I'm looking forward to trying there- the dessert case has some glorious-looking puddings I need to get next time (unless they have those plantain desserts again), and there's a fish entree I've seen a few times that's been calling my name. Just a note for my fellow eaters new to Filipino food- bring your sense of adventure and an open mind. You'll find some flavors, textures and- let's be honest- some parts you're not used to. Cute takeout spot in Libertyville. Clean with two small seat areas. Wouldn't consider it dine in. No bathrooms or trash inside for guests. Service was good. The temp was warm inside the shop, not sure if the AC was out. Mostly meat stew food options. Has some desserts and snacks from outside vendors. We ordered a dozen lumpia shanghai and the one meat and rice combo. My kids wanted the longanisa. It was a very large serving of rice and 3 pieces of longanisa for $12. The lumpia was roughly $7. Total was $22 - food was decent but quite pricey for what you get. read more

First time here and very cute place. Not a restaurant for dining in and definitely a place to order and carry out. They have a little lobby area for waiting but definitely not for dining. I needed to bring something to our family meet up and didn't feel like cooking or baking anything. I went on Yelp to find Filipino empanadas and Salamat Po came up. Perfect! I called the number and a polite gentleman answered. I asked him if they sold empanadas by the dozen and I needed it by the next day and they were able to accommodate. Picked 2 dozen up the next day and the price was reasonable - $2.50/empanada. I had to test one out as soon as I got home and they were perfect! Everyone at the party said they were really good. So will definitely be coming back here to order. Brought my mom with me and she was able to confirm that Salamat Po also caters. They had various Filipino food (Ulam) available when we visited. I guess their menu changes daily. They also had dessert available such as buko pandan, and other rice cake sweet desserts. Restaurant was clean and inviting. I will be back!! read more

Came across this delicious Filipino food spot last year when looking for eats around the dance studio my daughter attends nearby, and the food..Delicious!..And staff..Amazing & so welcoming!! Shot out to Joanna and Lj for making my my recent visit/purchase a pleasant one:) I was only planning to get a few Halo Halo desserts to share with friends, and left with much more, due to my eyes were hungry lol.. and everything looked so yummy for take out! The dinuguan aka chocolate meat is a hearty stew of pork simmered in vinegar, garlic, and pig's blood was rich and earthy. When looking for Filipino food in the northern suburbs there are few and far in between. We always drove by salamat po but had never gone in. We decided to try it for lunch one day. They don't have tables inside so it's just carry out only. They post their menu daily on Facebook. Be sure to check if you are looking for something specific. We got various dishes and desserts. The few outstanding dishes were the bbq steak, and the spaghetti. We also loved all of the desserts. The ube flan is a must try, it's super moist and creamy and not overly sweet. I can't wait to try other menus items like the sinigang and pork adobo if we can catch it on the menu. read more

Decided to check out this new-ish Filipino carry-out place, est. 2023. Located pretty conveniently off of Milwaukee rd, and had plenty of parking in the plaza. They change their menu daily and post on Facebook what they will be serving that day. We came rather late in the day (2pm on a Sunday) so most of the available options are gone. We did two combos, so four meat sides to try. They also offer small samples if you aren't sure what to get and don't want to commit to something new. They gave plenty of white rice, and were generous with the portion sizes probably because it's end of the day. Owners were nice and explained each dish and flavor profile. Flavors were all very good, but definitely heavy on the meats and not a lot of vegetables left. I'd be interested in trying new things given they rotate the menu! read more

Went here for the first time this week and the food was fantastic! We didn't know what anything was and the owner (?) talked us through everything and explained. He was so helpful and nice. Their combo portions are LARGE. And the food was fresh, clearly homemade, and so delicious. I highly recommend trying this place if you haven't. I'll be back soon. Don't forget a dessert! A very welcome addition for Filipino take out food. Service is always courteous, the place is brightly lit, clean and welcoming. Prices are a tod higher but they do use the right cut of meat instead of the off cut that most other places use and the food really taste good, you get what you pay for as they say. Go early as they always runs out. read more

Our second time but first time to get something, the first nothing good was left. Today we got the pancit palabok, it taste really good versus how it looks, doesn't look enticing but taste okay. The service could be improved, the lady doesn't really know what is being offered and the gent was not as friendly as I expected for a Filipino restaurant. Inside looks like a cafe/lounge so was a bit confused. A menu board w price will be appreciated. I posted a Google review on this restaurant two weekends ago. My mom and I went to this place to have a Mother's Day lunch two weeks ago. We ordered our food from their hot, small buffet. As the restaurant was nearing closing time, the lady at the cashier asked us if we would like to take some food home free of charge. We delightfully agreed and so we took some dishes such as the kare-kare, apritada, pancit palabok, pancit bihon, sinigang, bistek, and pineapple chicken. My mom ate her leftovers from lunch and had some kare-kare later on that evening. The following day, the food did not agree with her system and as a result, she had nausea, diarrhea, and chills leaving her very weak and dehydrated. She is still recovering to this day. I brought some of my leftovers to share with my co-workers and they said that when they brought it home to reheat, the food smelled rancid and just ended up throwing it away. My suspicion is that their food on display was more than a day old. The meat dishes need to be cooked thoroughly and safely. My understanding is that those meat dishes are usually slow cooked on a low fire. Any unused food needs to be stored properly. The food needs to be fresh and newly cooked. The exterior and interior of the restaurant look nice, clean, and deceiving so you would not think that their food was of less quality. They had a nice display of their snacks and desserts. We had the Spanish bread and halo-halo and it tasted good, but the experience that my mom had and the effects afterwards overshadowed the positive aspects of this restaurant. They should have the dishes that their menu displays. We initially wanted to order topsilog, which was the first item listed on their menu. The lady cashier said that they were out of that dish. In addition, it looks like more help is needed as I noticed that the lady cashier was going in and out of the kitchen while customers were waiting in line to place their order. To the owners of this restaurant, if you want this establishment to thrive, the food needs to be handled and cooked properly. Otherwise, the food currently displayed will drive customers away. I had friends and co-workers who were interested in trying this place out, but after my mom's experience, I notified them about the food and unfortunately, they will not be going to this place. Update (5/27/2024): The food that my mom ate made her very sick to the point where she has been and is currently receiving aggressive, urgent, and intensive medical care and treatment. We regret coming to this restaurant in the first place. Prior to our lunch, she was doing fine. To Joanna, the owner, PLEASE do not allow this to happen to another customer. As I mentioned in the Google Review recently, a complaint will be filed against this restaurant with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. I attended the soft opening today and was really pleased with the service. Everyone was really nice. The restaurant is really clean. Sadly I got there too late too late as most of the food got taken already. I haven't ever seen the parking lot so full. I'm excited to attend the grand opening. read more

I was excited to see another Filipino business open up within the Lake County area. I am a big believer in supporting my fellow countrymen small business owners. The location is not ideal because of the parking situation, small parking area shared with many other businesses next to it. I thought it was a dine in restaurant at first because I've read they have sittings provided and something about having a karaoke or band playing. To my surprise when I walked in, it was a small space and no dine in. It is a place where food is already cooked and you just choose which one you want to buy, a turo-turo style meaning point point. The decor is nice and modern but they didn't really have much to choose from. I saw shelf area filled with a few items and saw they have pan de sals so I grabbed two of them with one being the Ube pan de sal. Been so long I have had fresh pan de sal so I was excited to see they have them. The staff were nice and friendly. The elderly lady was so cute but she seemed confused at what things were and kept apologizing she was new. The cashier lady was very friendly and also kept apologizing for the wait as they have a register malfunction as their credit card machine wasn't working and kept saying hope I come back again. One disappointment I had was that I didn't realize the pan de sal they sold were not their own product, when I got home my family pointed out that it was from Valerios Bakery. I just grabbed two bags right away thinking I'm buying and supporting their own products. I do hope they will provide their very own made bake goods not outsourced ones as I'm not a big fan of Valerios bake goods here in Chicago. I prefer the ones in San Diego as they taste different. The Ube French Macarons were good but again they are mass produced outsourced from another company, would be better if they freshly made their own. I am also a bit confused to their branding of their business, is it Authentic Filipino food or are they a fusion? One last thing, it would be nice to have gotten a receipt for my purchases as I didn't know how much each one of the items cost me. I know the total amount I paid just didn't have a way to see how much each item cost. I will come back and try more of their items when I'm in the area the next time. I encourage everyone to support their fellow kababayans small businesses and be honest about their experiences so the business owners can correct and improve on them to provide better quality products and customer service experience for their customers. Been there a couple of times and food are great! They changes the menu mostly everyday which give you more choices which I like. I think some misunderstood the tipping option there. They don't ask you for a tip - its written there-it's optional. I believe wherever you go to a food establishment even Starbucks, you see a tipping container which is optional. Honest opinion.. The food tastes ok, not better compared to other Filipino restaurants here in LC (Kaibigan, Lola Adang & Pampanga Express). The serving size was the main concern, not enough for the price you pay. Also, they will still ask for gratuity even for a carryout which most Filipino stores don't do. read more
