It's not the closest Thai place for us, in the hinterlands of Lake Zurich, but it's well worth a few extra miles. By a wide margin, our favorite Thai place to go, or to pick up. Lunch specials are very reasonable and include soup and (in my opinion, totally unnecessary) two small crab Rangoon. I'm a fan of the Pad Prik Khing, and Lovely Wife likes to order their cashew nut with chicken. You can order Hot or Thai Hot (or more mild). The regular hot is already pretty spicy. Tried Lamoon for the first time on Friday night. We loved the restaurant. First thing I noticed was how clean and bright the restaurant was. Really great feeling when many local eats are more on the dark side. We started with the Crab Rangoon. Despite there being very little if any crab, these were really tasty. Crispy and hot, they had a lot of flavor. For Entrees, we had the Deluxe vegetables with chicken and Roasted Duck. The vegetables with chicken was a decent portion and was very flavorful. Chicken was thinly sliced and fresh. A very good dish. The roasted duck was a little drier but still good. I asked for it on the hot side, and they didn't disappoint. Wasn't too hot either. Service was really good. Food was fresh. A really great dinner. All in all, we will be back. I'd give it 4.5 stars due what seemed like little or no crab. Lampoon Thai is my new favorite Thai spot. The food at lampoon Thai tastes exactly when I had it when was in Thailand! The food quality is fresh and I will agree the jalapeño bombs are legit as good as others have said! And the green tea mochi ice cream is a good dessert. The service was great the waitress checked in often and asked us if we were okay. The ambiance was nice matched the experience. We got Basil Fried rice, Mango curry, and Pad Prik Khing. Our favorite was the Pad Prik Khing as it had a lot of flavor and chicken was nice and tender. Mango curry was interesting mix of sweet and spicy. The basil fried rice, however, felt like it did not have as much flavor. Overall, we enjoyed our Mother's Day lunch here. We ordered pick up from Lamoon for the first time. The food, shrimp pad see ew and pot stickers were both good, the food was ready as promised. Since I picked up the food I had minimal contact with the staff. The restaurant appeared to be clean and comfortable. My only complaint is they do not have a cucumber salad which most Thai restaurants have. We used to get Thai food from Lovely Thai until it was sold and then went to Royal Thai in Gurnee. I thought Lamoon is better than Royal Thai and is closer. I will definitely be going back to Lamoon. read more

It tasted like it was missing some acidity or alcohol to neutralize the "porkiness." I'd stick with their chicken or tofu. I'd give it 8/10 if the meat were better. OK. It is what it is. It's a Thaiesque restaurant in rural Illinois. The atmosphere is meh. It's a shopping strip mall with little to no ambiance. The service was meh. The food? Well, as I said at the onset, it is what it is. The fried tofu was chewy. The sweet and sour sauce with crushed peanuts was the same one one would find in any little burg. The Panang curry was way too filled with Skippy. The peanut butter overtook the sauce. The tofu was lame. Overall, I was in a food desert, but I chose poorly. I ordered the Pad Thai with Beef (extra $3). Usually this is a good dish to start to see if the new Thai restaurant can deliver... I got my order in a brown paper bag so I didn't really know the size of the container until I got home and pulled it out. Missing Lime wedge Round plastic container (clear top & black bottom recycle #1 dishwasher safe) I opened fairly hot container (4 miles home) making sure I stuck my nose close to it so I could smell the flavors dissipate in my nasal passage. The traditional smell of Pad Thai was so far a good sign to eat the $18 dish. Where's the Beef? I was disappointed in the beef that I paid extra for. It sincerely looked like the cheap regular lunch version; NOT WORTH $18 dollars. The sauce incorporated into the noodles tasted like it was bottled or from a gallon size plastic container from Sysco foods. Flavors of a pungent vinegar base. Not really the taste I was looking for being this was a newer addition to restaurants. Service Generic order taker, not expecting the Pepsodent smile, but more of a grunt would have been nice acknowledging some gratefulness of a customer walking thru the door. Ambiance Same as when the angry Chinese man owned the Chinese restaurant two owner prior when the koi pond was there. Pretty good thai place! Came here the night before thanksgiving with some friends, and the restaurant was pretty empty so we were seated immediately. I got the pad see ew with chicken and it was good! A good amount of sweet and salty, tastes exactly like what I expect- a solid pad see ew. I also tried some of the yellow curry, khao soi, and the duck special. The duck was really good, super flavorful and umami! I also liked the khao soi noodles, especially the crispy ones. However nothing was mind blowing, so a solid 4 stars here! My friends loved the Tom Kha. On the plus side: - the food was great - potions were descent - people were nice - the had gluten free food (I think) On the could be improved side : - they didn't really know that much about gluten free and the menu was not marked. (Gluten can hide in spices and all kind of places you don't expect. It is not a synonym for flour ) - the ambience is nice but felt a little more like a lunch place than a dinner place. This spot had been a solid Chinese takeout style place, but it had been less convenient for me for the last few years. I'm liking that this new Thai spot has a nicer dine-in vibe, it's much more clean and comfortable than it's predecessor! I took my time with the menu and I have to say its a little all over the place. Not the most Thai focused menu I've seen, I'll say that. We started with the appetizer sampler so there's a few things to cover starting there. The Chicken Satay, which is usually just ok for me, was really quite good. It seemed to have some curry and other seasoning inside that made it different than your standard chicken on a stick. The Crab Rangoon, while fried very nicely, had no meat in it. They use imitation crab in these anyway despite the fact that other items on the menu use authentic crab. Not a fan of the fake stuff personally, but if you say it's in there then at least put it in there. The Egg Rolls were very tasty. The Spring Rolls were surprisingly good. I don't usually care much for those but I'd get these again. We also had the sesame noodles with chicken (medium heat) and the sweet and sour shrimp (mild). So my biggest issue here was my noodles came with egg. I do not like egg... I can't stand it at all actually. And yes, it's prevalent in lots of Asian dishes of this style. So normally I just avoid dishes that might contain it. Yet every fried rice dish mentioned the egg in the description, lots of other dishes including a different noodle dish mentioned the egg, so it's natural I'd assume I was in the clear when the menu makes no mention of egg... sigh. End rant. After picking all the egg out of my food I found the noodles a bit over done and mushy. The chicken was on the dry side but not bad. It DID have good flavor from the sesame oil and the veggies were a nice variety. The medium heat was just enough to notice but I'd definitely go for hot next time. Sweet and sour shrimp was a bit too sweet. The pineapple was really nice but it needed more balance. The staff were friendly and the food came out quickly. It's also beautifully plated. That said my meal was really hit or miss. I'd split this place evenly at 2.5 stars because of the things I mention and the fact that I'd expect a little better for the price point. I DO want to come back soon and give them another shot, they're still getting their footing. They also have Laab on the menu which is a proper authentic dish I haven't had in years, If it delivers on the flavors I remember I'll update my rating. read more

My wife and I were excited for awhile when we found out that a new Thai place was opening up close to the Jewel that we often get groceries from. Prior to their opening, my favorite local Thai place was Thai Noodle Cafe in Libertyville but was really hoping that Lamoon could match the quality of their food so that I wouldn't have to travel as far to get good Thai food. Since opening, I have been there 3 times and have tried something different each time to get a fuller representation of the quality of the different dishes that they offer. I will caveat that I have gotten take-out each time and can only speak to that. From looking at pictures of their dishes for dine-in, it's quite possible that portion sizes are a bit larger when you go there in-person (but that's pure conjecture and not something I've verified). Here is a list of the dishes/drinks that I've tried: Orange Chicken Basil Fried Rice w/Pork Pad See Eiew w/Beef (lunch special w/crab rangoons) Mango Salmon with Red Curry Roasted Duck Pineapple Curry Thai Iced Tea Thai Iced Coffee I loved the pineapple and mango chunks in the corresponding dishes above. The mango felt especially different than what I'm used to in curry, especially with the deep fried salmon. It's on the pricier end of their menu items but was interesting enough that I didn't mind getting it at least once. Roasted duck was also not dry, so I was happy about that. The drinks were pretty standard so nothing particular to comment about there. I was a bit disappointed in the portion sizes of the take-out dishes relative to the price. Since I have a comparison point with the place in Libertyville, the prices here are a bit more expensive for less food. On top of that, the beef was a tad dry (whereas in comparison, the beef at Thai Noodle has consistently always been tender and delicious). The lunch special with the crab rangoons was also a bit of a let-down in that the crab rangoons are pretty small. Each can be consumed in essentially one bite. I'm also not sure if there is a portion size difference between the lunch special vs getting it as a regular entree (I believe they are virtually the same price). If there's no portion-size difference, then I guess it's a better deal because you get two small freebies. But if there is a portion-size difference, then it doesn't feel worth it. Regarding spiciness levels - I love spicy foods so I always opt for the hottest available, which for Lamoon is "Thai Hot". For me, it ranged from a very mild kick to a moderate kick, depending on the dish (not sure if it's b/c the ingredients of different dishes would mask the spiciness more or if it was inconsistent application), but nothing that made me sweat like some places do. If you enjoy spicy at all and have some level of tolerance, I think "Thai Hot" would be fine for you. At the end of the day, I would say that the food averages out to be on the decent end, with some above average selections and some sub-par ones. It's nearby and convenient for me so I would likely get it again but not a place I would say to travel out of your way for. My wife tells me that her in-person experience was excellent and so I may come back and update this if that makes enough of a difference for me to change my review. read more

I used to live in Laos and visited Thailand frequently and I have had some Excellent Thai food over the years. I have tried all of the Thai places in this area and they're fine, but so far none of them had the magical trio of quality, price and service. This place absolutely has all three. We ordered Tom Kha (beautifully well balanced, nuanced broth. Fresh veg. Well cooked chicken) and two of the lunch specials (that are an excellent deal for this area): massaman curry (not just dumped out of a curry paste can, but well blended with the other ingredients. Excellent complexity.) and pad Thai (not too sweet! So much American pad Thai is wayyyyy too sweet). Went here on a whim. Place is bright and clean. Tables nicely spaced so your not back to back with others. There are lots of asian choices on the menu to choose from for a variety of diets.
