I thought I would try grabbing a salad here instead of my usual Local Foods or Mendocino farms. I didn't expect the same quality as it's more of a fast food place, but I expected the salad of the same size to be less expensive than the other well-known, high quality restaurants. Plus, it's only a three block walk from my home as opposed to about 2 miles to Local Foods and 3/3.5 miles to Mendocino Farms. The ingredients were definitely not as high quality and obviously didn't have the same atmosphere as Mendocino Farms or Local Foods (as per my expectations), but I thought I was making a trade off between quality, atmosphere, and the cost I pay at these other establishments. However, even though the larger Salata salad was about the same size or a little smaller than the other establishments, it was several dollars more expensive. There's "alata" locations of Salata, so each one needs to live up to standards, and this one is far, far below. They get an extra star for having some nice employees, but that's where it ends. Some of the employees here were pretty nice which is about the only good thing I can say about this location. Very disappointing on a lot of levels. Smaller salad than expected and a lot of the stuff was wilted or rotten and definitely not what I was hoping for. We've been here four or five times just because of proximity to where we were working out, and it has been a pretty consistently bad quality salad, with excellent service at times, not so much others, and really disappointing and wilted salad salads to the extent that we now avoid this location. 1 star for salad, 4 for service, averages to 2. Salata is one of my go to places for a quick but healthy meal. I hadn't been in a while, so I'm not sure if it's specific to this location, but I was happy to see more variety of protein in the Heights location. This time, I ordered a cucumber wrap with chipotle shrimp, carrots, cucumbers, chick peas, black beans and honey mustard dressing. My friend ordered a similar wrap with chicken. I believe new worker in training should be with someone helping them to guide them. If they're good to go, set them on the floor without the label. This place was alright for a fast and light meal. I came here for lunch (12:30p-ish) on Saturday with a friend. The line was pretty long, but it moved quickly. I ordered a small salad and filled up the bowl with a lot of items. One thing I wasn't too fond of about this place is that adding protein is way more pricy than I think it should be. My salad ended up being close to $11, and at that point I think I would have rather had a poke bowl (which would have been cheaper and more novel). Great salads... I love, love, love Salata. Their food is always fresh and that is what I look for. The restaurant is clean and they keep their toppings bay clean for the most part (sometimes they over stuff the lettuce and it gets mixed in with the kale, you get a surprise in your kale salad... other times reaching for the topping could cause them to mix- I guess as long as you are not allergic you are fine!). Overall, I can eat salad every day, as I just love salads that much. Suggestions to take into consideration for this store: cute kale smaller, dont water down Ginger Lime dressing, scan each item to ensure that they are not accidently mixing (e.g. no eggs in the cheese). Plenty of parking, and now I think about it, it is probably due to the rude employees. I entered the establishment happy and ready to eat a fresh salad, and the employee at the bar seem like she was busy writing something important. It was so important, she didn't acknowledge me, but the guy all the way at the cash register did. I'm standing here looking like a dumb ass, while the female employee continues to write what seems to be important. Finally, after a minute and a half wait, the lady employee still don't greet me and ask me, "Salad or wrap?" I said hello, how are you? She was really fucking rude!!! I proceed politely to place two orders, and I found myself asking her if she could add more than 5 cucumber bites to a regular salad, more bean sprouts, more carrots...I mean geeesshh, at this point I'm asking myself, "Do I have to do your job for you?" I get to the middle of the salad bar where she was writing her important document, and I noticed it was her personal grocery list. You were rude to me for no reason, and did not greet me because your personal grocery list was more important. At this point, I am not surprised, but they have definitely lost my business, my husband's business, and his colleagues' business. We will never recommend the entire Salata chain to anyone. Salata's began with nice portions for the price, and in recent months, I found customers asking for more toppings just like I was. I did an experiment to see if every Salata location was the same. I dined downtown, West Gray, Greenway, and Heights. Different locations, but they all have the same things in common...angry looking employees, and skimpy on salad toppings. At the end of the day, I can pick up a salad at Whole Foods, Central Market, Salad Extravaganza, Cheesecake Factory, Oceanaires, or Phoenician Specialty Market. If Salata is planning on staying for years to come, they sure better go back to the basics of nice employees, great customer service, and decent topping portions. read more

Let me start off by saying that I frequent Salata. I go there at least once per week and up to 3 times per week. I do like the food. They have a plethora of fresh toppings and allow you to build your own salad. What I'm annoyed by is how much I spent today for such a relatively small portion. This is my second time at this particular location and because I wanted to avoid the lunch traffic, I decided to order ahead for pick-up. That was a big mistake! I ordered a regular salad (which is their larger salad). I usually eat this salad over a 2 day period, but definitely not today. When I typically go in and place my order to go, my to go box is usually pretty full. Today I feel as a result of ordering beforehand, they really cut down their servings. I started working in the area recently and I love salata so I've been many times over the last two weeks and in every visit a large salad results in a different portion. I don't understand why there is no system to gauge the amount of greens you get. The employees eyeball the amount and give an attitude when you question it. I understand English is not everyone's first language but the employee gave me the wrong topping more than once and was not able to understand what I was asking for, she seemed very frustrated with me. I was a Salata virgin until today -- a wrong turn took me into this shopping center -- but I'm glad I found it. Fast, filling and flavorful -- you can't lose! This is a fast-casual salad chain. I'd almost call it "gourmet" salads, because the ingredients go above and beyond. When I got there around noon, the line was LONG. But the staff there kept it moving super quickly. It was my turn in maybe three to five minutes. (I should add that this is not a "buffet" -- servers put your salad together for you, so this works a lot like a cafeteria.) You can get a wrap, but I ordered a salad bowl. (The small is good for you is you eat normal size lunches. The regular for $8 is monstrous, which is of course what I got!). YOu get your choice of different types of greens... then tons and tons of veggies. You've got your basics (cucumbers, carrots, etc.) but then here come the goodies (sun-dried tomatoes, jicama, artichoke hearts, etc.)... Then we get to the proteins (what kind of meat (or tofu/quinoa/falafel/seafood) would you like?) There's a charge, but it's well worth it. And of course, there are tons of dressings. I saw two kinds of ranch, but I got ginger-lime. Want it topped? Are you a crouton person? Maybe pumpkin seeds? it's all there. And then, you can order a side of soup if you like, or some bread, but trust me -- that huge salad will be more than enough! Expect to spend around $10, depending on options and drinks. I had never been so I was very appreciative of the young lady that assisted me by preparing my salad bowl and explaining how things work. Heights area outpost of the preeminent Houston area salad bar chain - very consistent with all other locations. Not as cheap as other quick stop food options (i.e. Subway, etc.) but the portion sizes are large and the ingredients are always very fresh. At lunch, they have plenty of employees to keep the line moving. At dinner, you may have to wait a few minutes as they typically only have 2-3 employees working. My biggest complaint about this location is that parking in the evenings is sometimes near impossible. A popular seafood restaurant (Star Fish) opened in this strip center last year and their customers tend to monopolize availabile parking (and for long periods of time, as Star Fish is a sit down, waiter-service restaurant). Final note: the Kroger at 1440 Studemont offers coupons for this location on the back of store receipts. For the longest time, they were offering $2 off a salad, reducing the cost of large salad from $12 to $10 (great deal). More recently, this offer has changed to free soup with salad (not as great). read more
