Service was one of the worst I have had in a long time. The waitress yelled at my mother from the counter area just to take her order. My mom's meal was not cooked how she asked. They said they were busy but there was only two other tables in the restaurant. It took 45 min to get our food. I will not be coming here again. read more

This breakfast and lunch place isn't fancy, but on Salida's main drag, it's practically a place for the town to meet. In over two years, I haven't had much luck getting here before 2 p.m., until now. There are several parking spots in a tiny lot just in front and to the side of the building, off the street. There are a couple of entrances, but apparently, the one to the right is available. This leads to the dining room, just in front of the kitchen and cash register. It's a small place with probably no more than 12 tables in two rooms. I was not greeted but took a seat when I didn't see a sign. I saw someone in the other room cleaning a table, so I figured they had a very casual policy and would let me know if sitting at a certain table wasn't acceptable. The table could have used cleaning. The carpet was gross--almost black--in front of the cash register. The server returned shortly and had a menu in his hand, among other things. Even though his hands were full, he asked me what I wanted to drink. I wasn't sure whether to eat breakfast or lunch, so I told him to wait. The menu sort of reminded me of the Mangy Moose in Manteca. There was a diverse selection of items, including omelets and burgers. I chose an orange juice and the Country Omelet. It came with potatoes (I chose hash browns) and biscuit and gravy (which I chose) or toast. I also asked for an extra stomach to hold it all. Rather quickly, he brought back the tiniest (6 ounces?) glass of juice I'd ever seen at a restaurant anywhere. I should have photographed the bill, as I don't remember the price but it wasn't cheap at $14+ for everything. Then, he brought a dinner roll and the gravy. He didn't say "We didn't have any biscuits." or anything really, so I assume that this is typical. The gravy was thin and only a little spicy. There didn't seem to be any sausage. You're better off at Carl's Jr. The omelet and hash browns came on a large plate. I had to ask for utensils. The server made a joke when he gave me the utensils. Naturally, the hash browns were barely cooked. They were white and soft in the middle and brown and crispy outside. There was apparently no salt used. On the other hand, the omelet was better than good and seemed to contain quite a lot of fresh ingredients. There was plenty of everything in the omelet. With better service, a clean table, and clean carpeting, I would have given it 4 stars. Usually, when I've gone to small town places like this, I'm blown away by the service and cooking. The gravy I had on my chicken fried chicken and biscuits and gravy was watery and flavorless. The chicken was just frozen chicken strips. I have been wanting to try their breakfast for a while. My first impression as I walked is was I am at a doughnut shop. The only server there greeted me with what sounded like, "Find a seat". I did not know if she was actually talking to me because she made no eye contact and was talking as she past by real quickly. I usually have great experiences when I eat out in regards to service. This experience wasn't a good one. I can't say enough about customer service. And this server has NO people skills! This server alone, will drive customers away. As far as the food goes, it wasn't bad. But it wasn't spectacular either. The menu had masking tape over so many choices. I usually look at Google before I go to a new place and look at all the pictures of food. What I wanted they only had in a much smaller portion. I always want to be fair with my reviews. Used to be such a great family place with great home cooked food from scratch and good size portions..... now with the new owners you get a microwaved hash brown paddy and precooked mystery meat sausage paddy that tastes like it was cooked in fish oil. I have been meaning to try this restaurant for awhile now. Known for their chicken fried steak challenge and homemade biscuits and gravy. Located near the sports complex, not a lot of parking in the front and it's easy to pass if your not paying attention. From the outside it looks like a hole in the wall and super small. Once inside there are two rooms with about 12 - 15 tables. There is a lot of old Salida history on the walls and photos of all the victorious participants in the chicken fried steak challenge. We were greeted and sat instantly as it was not too busy that day. Our server was very attentive with a great attitude. The coffee was constantly refilled and the food came out in a timely fashion. I ordered the chicken fried steak, what the heck, I had to try the challenge. I believe it was $18.95, but I knew if I could not finish the whole steak, it would be great to eat later. The steak comes with hash browns or country potatoes and three eggs with toast. In order to win the challenge you have to eat EVERYTHING. The steak was really good, super tender and fried perfectly. The gravy was very tasty, not the best gravy I've had but it tasted good. The hash browns I thought could of been a bit crispier but the eggs over easy came out perfect. My son ordered the chicken fried chicken which he loved and my wife ordered the French toast. The French toast was fantastic, I had to try a bite. They both split the biscuit and gravy. The biscuit was huge and fluffy, they definitely enjoyed it. Sad to say I could not complete the challenge. I didn't even come close but it tasted so good and I had a good time trying. We are home for the holidays and was craving the giant chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy, and pancakes. Driving up, we realized that it has changed, but was hoping that the similar recipes remained. The gravy used to be peppered and this one was a bit bland. The most disappointing aspect is that the $19 chicken fried steak is about half the size it was. The biscuits and pancakes were tasty, but I think we will try other items if we return. The people working are very kind, and I think they are trying to maintain some of the favorites, just keep in mind it's a new cafe. read more

Salida's Kountry Kitchen is located in the older part of Salida... the West Side of Hwy 99 (versus the East Side with more modern establishments). You can easily drive right by this place if you're not attentive... then you'd be near the City Limits pretty quick. SKK is a just a two-room restaurant which serves ONLY Breakfast and Lunch and closes at 2:00 in the afternoon. The walls are decorated with "Country" knick-knacks... historical Photos of Salida (important residences, historical structures, a group photo of the 1940 Salida Baseball Team, etc, etc, etc). Every customer was a local today... no one exiting from Hwy 99. Farmer Guys in their Dusty Boots and Blue Jeans driving Pickups. In fact, a group of 4 Farmer Boys ordered the Chicken Fried Steak - and just as the Yelp reviews described - it was HUGE (emphasis in CAPS). None of the three who ordered the Chicken Fried Steak finished it. (And only two took left-overs back with them.) First of all, I asked the owner, whosd with his wife, has owned SKK for about five years, what his most popular Breakfast Entrees were... The special today was a BBQ Beef Tri-Tip Sandwich - not interested. Of course, I had to ask about the Chicken Fried Steak - when I heard it was over a POUND... WHOA! Can't eat that much meat and make it back on a Bike Ride back to Lodi - No Way! ($13.95) Linguica & Eggs - not interested. I decided on the following... Refrigerator Omelet (** 1/2 $9.95) The owner, who is a Pastor, described the RO as a 4-Egg Omelet with a little bit of everything, but was basically an Omelet with Green and Red Bell Peppers. You can have Hash Browns or what SKK describes as Home Fries (but from his description... why not call it Kountry Potatoes?), with Toast, or Biscuits and Gravy in a separate bowl (ahem... 1 Biscuit & Gravy). The RO came out on an Oval 9 inch wide plate... the Omelet itself took up more than half of the plate by itself, with the rest of the space taken up by the Home Fries. This is just a variation on the Denver Omelet... mainly because of the Bell Peppers and quite a bit of diced Ham. The recipe was enhanced by the addition of Mushrooms, Onions, and what looked and tasted like the Daily Special - diced BBQ Beef Tri-Tip. Quite a bit over-priced for a modified Denver Omelet, though. Home Fries (**** 1/2) Very good concoction - Potato Chunks fried with Green and Red Bell Peppers with some Onions. Biscuit & Gravy (** 1/2) Would have been pretty good - except that the Chef over-salted the Gravy considerably. Almost ruined it. The Biscuit itself was pretty big - about 4-inches square - and had a bread-like consistency. Coffee (**** 1/2 $1.50) Pretty inexpensive for a cup of Strong Coffee! The Owner, who was also the server today, I guess, was not used to this position... had to ask for every refill. Cinnamon Roll (*** 1/2 $2.00) Home-made. About 4 inches wide and about a couple of inches high... I ordered this after Breakfast because of the sprinkling of crushed Nuts on the Cinnamon Roll. Pretty good - but was a little off-put by the puddle of Oil surrounding the Roll after it had been Zapped in the Microwave. Note to Owner - Ask the customer next time whether they want the Cinnamon Roll warmed up! Interested in Chicken Fried Steak? Came here over the weekend because my foolish Husband thought he could take on the Chicken Fried Steak challenge - I blame Man Vs Food that show makes peeps like my Husband think they can all of a sudden be the next Chestnut or Adam Richman. The challenge consists of the MASSIVE chicken fried steak, 3 eggs, hashbrowns and either toast, biscuit and gravy or english muffin. If you choose to do this challenge go with the english muffin, it is the smallest of the 3 choices. Do NOT, I repeat do NOT go with the Biscuit and gravy - it's good but freakin humongous on its own. I think you see where I'm going here, clearly my Husband didn't finish his plate - maybe ate a quarter of the whole thing, but seriously I don't know anyone who would have. The people on their "Wall of Fame" must be freaks of nature or something because it was HUGE, the pictures here really do not do the size justice. I went with a more modest biscuit and gravy with a side of bacon and hashbrowns. I was stuffed half way through my biscuit. It was very good and tasted very homey. The prices here are very reasonable considering the portion sizes. Here's a tip if you are dining with someone who also wants the CFS, ask them to split the dish. You get a big half portion that you still probably won't be able to finish and it ends up only being like $7 bucks per person. Overall we had a good experience, it's pretty far for us to make this a regular stop (About 75 miles), but if we are ever driving through the area we will definitely stop by again. read more

My fiance and I were debating on where to have brunch before heading back to the bay area. We saw this little family owned spot and decided to give it a try. Right before we walked in, there was another family who had an elderly women needing assistance to walk in. The owner of the shop (Jacky) immediately came out to assist and opened the door for them. When we walked in, we were greeted with a big smile and a warm welcome. We sat ourselves and chose the smaller table because we wanted to leave the bigger tables for larger parties. When the wife came to take our order she insisted that we move to a bigger table so we have more room. Jacky insisted as well so we did end up moving. We ordered the chicken fried steak and a pork Vietnamese sandwich. The bread of the sandwich was super warm with a nice crust. Sandwich was delicious, chicken fried steak was great as well. However, the biggest highlight is the hospitality of Jacky. He respectfully asked if he can conversate with us and I said, sure. Our conversation was super nice; talking about family and our history. He is super easy to talk to. I can tell Jacky is man of high character and respect for everyone. During our conversation, Jacky was talking about how there were other donut shops and Mexican bakery down the street. Instead of saying that he has to compete with them, he said that we all share the customers. This statement here is what really did it for me when it comes to figuring out what kind of person Jacky is. Such a humble and genuine guy. I wish nothing but success for Jacky and his family restaurant. Jacky really deserves for his business to thrive, so I highly recommend the local community and travelers to come here to try the amazing food and perhaps get to know a really great guy. Let me tell you the gravy was amazing. Big pieces of sausage! The omelette was cooked to perfection and the veggies were super fresh. The owner gave my kids a extra donut hole when we purchased donuts for later. They have the biggest cinnamon rolls and apple fritters I've ever seen. A few regulars came in while we were there and seeing how the customers are with the owners was awesome. We definitely found our new breakfast place.
