The options at this grocery store is overwhelming but it's kind of a treat also. There is lots of merchandise that you can't get at any run of the mill grocery store. This grocery store is mainly tuned into Asian shoppers and so you get a lot of merchandise that you don't see in just any everyday place. I heard coming here you can get all kinds of different flavors of Kit Kats and indeed I did find a lot of different ones. I purchased a flavor though that I haven't tried before which made it fun. It was a dark chocolate Kit Kat. But what I unexpectedly found was different Pocky flavors also. The sweet tasting pretzel stick I have had plenty of times with chocolate and strawberry flavors but I found one with fruit (mango) chunks that was a part of the flavor. It was good! Perhaps not my favorite but I'm glad I got to try something new! In addition to that there is something similar to Pocky called Pretz. This is a more savory version of Pocky. I found a toasted sugar flavor which I never came across before and that was good too! So it definitely was a hit coming back again. In addition to the grocery store itself at this location there is a connecting bookstore and a food court. So you could definitely spend a considerable amount of time here! I enjoy the bookstore but haven't tried the food court so that will be yet another visit for another time.

The store's far larger than I'd imagined and carries far more stuff. The produce dept. got me right away when I found GREEN lemongrass (almost impossible to find in my county), black garlic, large fresh ginger--and garlic scapes (they call it spring garlic). I was especially hoping to find garlic scapes since I just discovered them and have already found a great stir-fry recipe for them. A also bought some soy sauces along with an XO sauce that are hard to find in regular supermarkets. Yes, I already have stir-fry plans for all of them. There's far more food stuff I could've bought but the question that decided me against it was "Who else in the house will eat it other than me?" The meats pre-sliced for Korean/Japanese dishes tempted me but were pricey. Besides I own a meat slicer. The one thing I didn't find which was my sole disappoint was Shaoxing wine, a Chinese rice win. They carried the cooking version but not the drinking one. Contrast that with shelves filled with Japanese sakes. I prefer Shaoxing for stir-fry dishes and already have some at home so the disappoint wasn't too great. We rarely get to Seattle so it'll be a while until we re-visit the store. The good news is that a new Uwajimaya will open in Tacoma next year. We plan to shop there a lot more often. Definitely a store worth visiting even if you don't cook Asian dishes. they carry all kinds of cooking stuff--including woks, rice makers, and lots of gadgets. Our son's friend even bought travel chopsticks. I told him he'll be required to whip those out at our next Chinese stir-fry dinner. He better like black garlic and garlic scapes.

While checking out, I used two paper bags and was confronted by an employee who essentially forced me to add the bag charges to my bill. While I understand there is a Washington state bag law, the employee's approach felt completely aggressive and unnecessary for a 24-cent issue. Metropolitan Market already charges premium prices, and being policed over paper bags at a self-checkout is an incredibly uninviting customer experience. I will definitely think twice before coming back to this location.

It's always stocked, super easy to navigate, and the staff are always ridiculously helpful and friendly. Thats the secret sauce. Even with they're busy, the employees never change their attitude. Always super kind, approachable, and make you feel welcome instead of like a burden. *Cough Qfc, Cough* There are two places that just do not know how to disappoint. Trader Joes and Costco. On this visit, I got one of those viral canvas tote bags... they're so popular overseas and are selling for around $40 when the original price is just $4.99, plus tax! The limit for the new green handled tote bag is 4 per customer. I also got some mini totes in the original colors of red, yellow, navy, and green handles. They're just $3.99, plus tax. The limit is 2 of each color. As usual, I looked at freshly cut flowers, greeting cards, and snacks. Everything is reasonably priced and the employees are very friendly and helpful! We found the mascot (a plushie monkey) and got free stickers as our reward (instead of a lollipop). It was a fun shopping experience!
