This place does good coloring, but the way this salon billed me was very questionable. I did full foil for shoulder length hair with a final bill of $525. When asked for a itemized receipt, they told me they don't do that, which is absolutely against the Washington State Legislature RCW 36.18.090. Then I asked if they can provide me a general price breakdown, the response was vague and scrappy. 'We used b30 Brazilian on you instead of X.' 'Ok, that is great, but how much does that cost, even approximately?' No straight answer. Then they quickly dropped $10 from the bill to avoid further questioning, great, does that mean you agree you billed me $10 more? What product/service was it deducted from? This is the kind of skepticism when salon don't provide an itemized receipt, even general ballpark estimate would build trust here. Especially when your paying for a half grant bill without having even the slightest degree of visibility on what it's made up of, that's not correct practice. I was a new client, and it's really this little things that breaks the trust. Not to say the service was very average, and I walked away with wet cloth from hair washing. Won't return. read more

First I want to say for the newbies, ASK YOUR QUESTIONS! The only question that I asked was, "will it change the texture of my hair?" I have natural waves/curls when I let my hair air dry. The stylist answer was, "No it won't change it." I regret not asking how damaging this was going to be to my hair! I went from a 1- deep black to an 8/9 blonde/light blonde in 1 EIGHT hour sitting! It came out beautiful. I was ecstatic when it was done! THE FIRST WASH I cried! I cried because my hair was so brittle, it felt like straw. It was so hard to brush! I couldn't even blow dry with my round brush! The second time I washed my hair I let it air dry. The natural waves/curls that I once had, gone! Breakage, frizz, and dryness from then on! I spent so much money on expensive hair products, just trying to make it soft again! They ask you "how your current hair is. Your hair goals and history." Here's the thing, what's the point of a consultation if you can't be honest with your clients? If you know going from dark black hair to a blonde is damaging, say it! If I had known better, I would have asked to do it in two or three sessions. Close to $700 down the drain plus all the hair products I bought after! I don't want anything fixed. The stylists are trendy and it was quite busy when we had out appt. I love 44th Street Salon so much! Kathy is amazing and the first person I've truly trusted with my hair. I've attempted to get to an ash grey at other places before, but it's always been a disaster until I started coming here. I came in with box dyed, brassy orange hair.. and she somehow got it to the perfect ashy grey in one session! Amazing! I literally can't stop looking at my hair. After many years of getting rejected from various salons, I finally found a place that specializes in ashy/grey/blonde balayage. The best part is that these stylists have a huge Asian clientele so they know how to cut and dye Asian hair! Other places don't know how to handle thick hair and I usually get a terrible hair cut or a brassy dye job but Kathy is very knowledgeable and is dedicated to her craft. She took her time with the entire process and didn't cut any corners. She pays attention to your hair texture and asks questions about how you typically wear your hair. I told her that my hair gets poofy and has a wavy texture and because of this info, she gave me a dry cut (which I really appreciate because most places do wet cuts) to make sure it looks good. I've only gotten my hair done one other time professionally by a trusted friend because I've always been so scared of the results. I came in nervous and excited and ended up leaving extremely satisfied with everything here! The service and experience was great from the front desk to my seat in the salon. Everyone is very friendly and attentive, it definitely makes the experience go by faster. My hair took a total of 6 hours or so which was a surprise, I thought it would take way longer! I had a previous balayage and eventually box-dyed over the blonde parts I had because my hair was growing out. I ended up getting a beautiful, ashy blonde, dimensional balayage and only had to cut a couple inches off where the color didn't lift (which I didn't mind at all)! Kathy did a superb job. This hair salon is amazing at balayage, color, cut and especially Asian hair. To lighten Asian hair is tricky if you want cooler tones as we have reds in our undertone. But, the stylists here are experts at lifting and getting the exact color tone you're looking for. They do custom colors and also are all the nicest and friendliest staff. I'm not too chatty so I'm glad Kathy talked to me but didn't force any conversation. I also really appreciated when the salon had a cancellation, they sent me an email asking me if I wanted an earlier appointment since I had to book pretty far out. I am so happy with the balayage I had done by Jenny!! This was my first time having bleach & foils for balayage and I'm so impressed with the results. I had been going to Gene Juarez for years to cover my greys, so I had a lot of dark, permanent dye on my hair. Jenny persisted and took a lot of care and consideration in lifting my hair for the highlights, and what she was able to do in one sitting surprised me. I got my hair done here this week and I couldn't wait to leave review. Because they were so great! The salon was sanitized, clean, and checked temperature of everyone coming into the salon. We were wearing mask the whole session and I felt safe! They also had an employee sanitizing every places every time people sit on or touch. They were maintaining the salon so well during covid. I was walking around with a brassy, orange hair that my previous stylist gave me two months ago (she gave me an ash brown and it faded to this)! I rely on Yelp a lot to find new places to try and was excited to find a hair salon with high reviews. Did my research online (Yelp and IG for photos and reviews) and finally made the leap to schedule an appt to get my hair cut. I had hair to my waist and sample pictures of a short shoulder length style I was ready to go for. I rarely get my hair cut so this is a big deal and one I don't take lightly. Sure my hair will grow back if i end up hating it but I'm obviously picking a salon with this experience and price point to get an end result that I love. Luckily this place has 2 locations with many stylists of different experience and specialities that i get to choose from which should make this easier. Naturally i book an appt with a stylist in the higher price point because I'm trying to make sure my hair cut is as good as it can be. I book an appt in Bellevue at least 2 weeks out and on the day of, the stylist texts me saying that they're cancelling my appt 2 hrs before my scheduled time because she's running late and won't have time for my cut. Slight sour taste in my mouth but ok, I'll go to the Renton location with a new stylist because the salon still has overall good reviews and by this point i was ready and excited for a new hairstyle. Made an appt with another stylist and got a text from them almost immediately asking if I can change my appt time on that day. Now I'm wondering what kind of ethics this place has because why are you offering times and services your stylists can't fulfill? Told them that I can cancel if the date and time didn't work and they said it was ok. Came in and showed the stylist what I was looking for and she took a good 30 min showing me hair styles completely different than what I had come in with to finally cut my hair kind of how I wanted it. What I wanted was shoulder length hair with bangs and she cut it past my shoulders and no bangs because she didn't want me to have to adjust to short hair AND bangs and because she said the bangs I wanted weren't in season anymore. When she checked me out, she added an extra $15 to my bill for what I assume is consultation which was unsolicited when I came in. High chance of not coming back in after this experience and pricing. found out a friend made an appt here and told her my experience and she had something similar where her stylist tried changing her appt as well. I waited a little bit to do this review because my first experience was... okay but my more recent visits have been great! Here's why -- I came in the first time for a cut and dark-to-light balayage. It had been 2+ years since I last colored my hair so it was near virgin again except for maybe the tips. The cut was great, my stylist was super friendly, she achieved dark to light in one session so I was super pleased! One of the reasons I sought out this place after my hair coloring hiatus was because I did not want to go through the process again of lightening my hair like most stylists do. I just wanted dark-to-light in one appt. The next day when my hair was straight, I noticed the blend being super choppy. It bothered me butttttttttt I live in Shoreline and the salon is in Renton. I also have an extremely busy work schedule so it was inconvenient to come in. I tried to live with it because working in the dental field, my hair is tied up all the time anyway so I thought over time I would just get used to it. Weekend after weekend when my hair would be down, I was almost embarrassed to go out with it. I would point it out before others did. 5 weeks later, I called in to see if there was anything I could do about it and by this point it was too late. The gal I spoke to on the phone said I could come in for a toning appt and they can try to fix it. I wanted to come in ASAP around my work schedule and it just so happened that it couldn't be with the original girl I saw who colored my hair but instead, with Mai. Mai is AMAZING. Unfortunately, she couldn't quite fix the blend with the time allotted for a toning appt but she darkened the blend to help integrate it better in addition to toning my hair color. I set up my next balayage appt with her and she did an amazing job!! She gave me such a beautiful ashy color and added a little hint of purple to help preserve the ashiness for a little longer. She also never assumed to know what I was trying to convey and was patient with my explanations on what type of color I wanted. I never felt like she was rushing her work either. 44th Street Salon is the BEST PLACE I've gotten my hair done. I am so thankful I found this place. I'm not the best with change, so I was VERY PICKY when it came to finding a place. I wanted to find a place where I didn't need multiple sessions to get my hair light while keeping the integrity of my hair. YOU KNOW this place is good when I was recommended by ANOTHER studio to go here, because they know how to go from virgin hair to light hair, while still having amazing results. Covid: When I first entered, they were very cautious about covid. I saw the stylist completely clean their spots where their customers touched. My stylist Tia (also the owner) checked my temperature prior to entering. There was a lot of space between customers (i think only 1-3 at a time) to ensure social distancing inside. When I first entered, I showed her the photos I wanted for my hair, and she completely addressed any concerns I had. I originally wanted a pastel pink blonde color, and Tia informed me that the pink would quickly fade and leave a nice blonde. She also mentioned that I would need to apply a pink solution once a week to keep the pink. I am so thankful she was informative and set my expectations, cause I knew that I wasn't ready for that. I showed her another photo of an ash blonde, and she quickly got to work. My hair had trouble taking in the solution and becoming lighter, so Tia had to apply it multiple times. She took her time to ensure the quality of her work, which I really appreciated. I was there for 5.5 hours, because my hair was quite stubborn, but TIA WAS SO PATIENT. By the end, I was completely IN SHOCK OF HOW BEAUTIFUL MY HAIR was. I only had my hair dyed brown shades before, so the shock from dark brown to ash blonde was AMAZING. PLEASE GO HERE FOR YOUR HAIR. Kayla applied toner all over my hair and ruined the balayage that I just did 3 months ago?! And the hair cut.. what a joke for $75. It's nothing like the pictures that I showed to her.
