Aiyana took great care of me today. I almost fell asleep when she was washing my hair. She gave me the best freaking massage to my scalp I ever had!!! Not only that she wasn't scared to get in my hair and scrub my scalp. I have very thick hair which can be tough to get to the root at times. But she got to it with ease with the wash, the blow dry and the flat iron. I've never had a personal stylist to go to before, especially one that really took the time to do my hair, understand my hair, what it needed, and what I wanted for my hair. I've been hearing of Salon 718 for a long time. Friends have told me of it's cool, edgey, and very Brooklyn vibes, I've heard whispers on YouTube of salon 718 (shameless maya), just recently from a Yelp Elite event that I couldn't bring myself to attend because Of how reluctant I was to allow a pair of new hands carve into my thick, straight hair. If Peter D., Yelp's elite community board recommended this place, (so much that they even had a second yelp event that again I didn't attend) then it has to be a solid place. I went through reviews and pictures of gorgeous locks done by these very talented people that appreciate every type of hair. One particular photo stood out done by Christine, and in my heart instantly felt she is the one I'd pour all my trust in. Seriously it's this dramatic for me to trust someone to touch my hair. I called on a Thursday and thankfully was able to make an appt for the following Monday. Conveniently located off the D,R, and Q off dekalb, steps away from LIU. I arrived at 3 on the dot. The place is beautiful, minimal and spotless. As soon as Christine finished with her client she came over and digged in to my hair to get a sense of it, which I really appreciated it that she didn't just give me a generic haircut. But was able to customize it to complement my face shape. I showed her the pic of her client that she had done and I told her I like how this looks if I was to style it like that. The wash was amazing, products used smelled like heaven. and got an awesome massage. With Great coffee. girls that coffee was really good. She's quick but not too quick we're you feel rushed she took time to get to know me and we chatted. She was def busy that day however she still took her time to give me what I wanted. She does an amazing blowout very gently to the head. And then she told of products that would do well with my hair. I left with a Morraccan hair masque that smells divine and leaves my hair so soft. I've been here at the dekalb ave location before almost a year ago to get a haircut and it was pretty bad. The girl did try though and was nice. Today I was in bind and really needed a bang trim and this was the closest location to me with availability, so I thought there's no way to mess up such an easy cut. My hair dresser was the girl with the multi coloured pixie cut. Firstly, she took no care in the cut at all and just kind of grabbed a bunch of my bangs and hacked at it. Didn't check it for even half a second afterwards. The result is patchy and uneven. The worst part was, there was some confusion about the exact type of trim that I wanted and instead talking through it, she snapped at me several times, and when she cut it in a way I asked her not to, she snapped "this is what you asked for" and actually kept doing it though I'd asked her stop. I left feeling awful, and with seriously unfortunate bangs. Please avoid this place if you like having good hair and being treated with basic decency read more

She asked questions about what hairstyle I wanted and was very detailed in her recommendation. It's very rare that I write a Yelp review but I needed to let people know about Salon 718. First thing, I was late for my appointment but they got to me right away anyways AND there's a huge snowstorm and Michaela and Sunshine were there still busting out haircuts left and right so they were VERY accommodating. Second thing, I usually cut my hair myself because I get soooo stressed and nervous when anyone touches my LONG thick hair. But, I had really been letting it go and I had some SERIOUS dead ends that could not be ignored any longer. I showed Michaela some pictures of how I style my hair and some other pictures of what I liked. She cut my hair and at first I was in a bit of shock because I thought it looked short, BUT, not to fear. As ridiculous as I sounded trying to explain what I wanted, we ended up with a PERFECT cut in a matter of minutes. Just had to shorten up those top layers and BOOM! There it was. My hair looks SO much better and SO HEALTHY!! Third thing, Sunshine did my blowout! She took her time and it was perfect! I had no idea you could get those curls without a curling iron!!? I have brown, coarse hair still in recovery from blonde highlights, so I'm very sensitive and very picky about where I get my hair cut. I was happy to take Yelp up on its free-haircut offer, so that I could avoid paying for what I feared would be a terrible experience. My fears couldn't have been more unfounded--Cynthia took great care of me from start to finish with a great cut that has held up over the last three weeks and a lot of patience with my pickiness over how I wanted my hair styled after the cut. As a brunette, I loved seeing a salon staffed with so many dark-haired women--I don't want to generalize, but, based on my experience, I find that they're generally less apt to insist that I might want to try a straightening treatment, push color, etc. They get me and my hair--and the fact that I *like* my hair. My only hesitation about going back is that Cynthia only does cuts and doesn't do color. Over the years, I've come to accept paying a lot to have my hair done to my satisfaction, but I'm not sure I want to pay for--and tip--two different people working on my hair. I've been a hair cut client of Michaela for years, in her private salon, and was thrilled when she told me she was opening her salon full time in Prospect Hts. One thing about Michaela - she might just be the fastest hair cutter in Brooklyn. I've been in an out of her chair in like 25 minutes, shampoo, style and all. I'm kind of low maintenance but this isn't corner-cutting - every cut looks great. Even better than that - my cuts are great for weeks. Real life stories - I have been stopped numerous times around NYC -- once in Madison Sq Park, in line at a bar the East Village, at concerts - by people who asked where I got my hair cut. And I'm a wash-and-wear type who spends about 3 minutes on "styling." That never happened to me before Michaela started cutting my hair. So, just saying, she gives slammin' cuts and they LAST. I just want to start off by saying that, I LOVE MY HAIR !! I went to the salon at 80 Dekalb Ave in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Overall, I had a great time at the salon! I wanted to treat myself to a much needed hair cut because my birthday month was coming up and my hair needed some love. When I first entered the salon, I was greeted by Michaela (owner and stylist). She asked if I had an appointment and I told her that I booked an appointment with her. We then had a consultation regarding my plans for my hair. I'm a fairly indecisive person, so at first I told her I wanted to cut off all my relaxed ends, but then, when it came down to it, I wanted a bob with all my dead/colored ends gone. Before I get into this next paragraph, let me just state that I am a black woman who is transitioning to natural. I have about an 1 1/2 of new growth (kinky curly type 4bish hair). So first, I was sent to the chairs for my hair to be washed. The woman (ADONA) who proceeded to wash my hair was, and I am assuming to be, a white woman (non-black). When she washed my hair, she scrubed it back and fourth creating a crazy mess of knots and tangles in my head.. Although my scalp was clean... it was SOOOOO TANGLED! (I washed my hair 3 days prior to my appt and I got about 3 strands of hair from detangling my own hair) She clearly had no idea how to handle my hair. So I politely told her that I usually wash my hair in sections and work on each section individually. She then continued to use her method to shampoo my hair as I cringed in the chair. When she started to condition, she said that my hair felt softer, but I knew it was still tangled because she didnt start to detangle it yet. BUT then she started to detangle. What happened next is the only reason why my review didn't get 5 stars.. Adona started to detangle my TRANSITIONING, tangled hair with a fine tooth comb from root to tip!! I heard the hair ripping in the comb and I nearly shit my pants.. I told her to use a paddle brush in my hair and start from my ends so she wouldnt rip all my hair out. She got the brush and followed my advice and worked in small sections. When she was finished with a section she twisted it and clipped it away. I spent a total of 50 mins in that chair.....All because Adona's shampooing method didn't work for my type of hair. (when I got up and looked in the sink there was so much hair). At this point, I was pretty frustrated, but when I sat in Aiyonna's chair, she made me feel a lot better! She told me that she dealt with natural hair all the time so I didn't worry at all. She basically prep-ed my hair for Michaela to cut it. She worked in sections to blow dry my hair. There was no tugging or burning like I've experienced at the Dominicans. I definitely plan on having Aiyonna deal with my natural hair once I am fully natural. Once my hair was blow dried, I talked to Michaela once more about what I wanted. I told her that no matter what, I wanted to be able to put it up in a ponytail because I play sports. I got a exactly what I wanted! Days later, my hair is still silky, smooth and straight (except for my roots, but that because I train and work out every day) Michaela was SUPER SWEET as well as Aiyonna. I do plan on going back to that salon, maybe when I big chop my hair. Being a Yelp Elite member, I had the pleasure of having my hair cut today at Salon 718. I chose this location since it's the closest to my apartment. Tucked in between cafes, this bright, clean and warm salon was very easy and convenient to get to. As some people might agree, getting your hair cut with a new stylist (at least for me) is always a bit unnerving as I had had some negative experiences in the past and so before arriving, I was not sure what to expect . Upon entrance, I was warmly greeted by the staff and also enjoyed a nice cup of tea as I waited for my stylist to finish work on her client. Since it was my first time at Salon 718 and I didn't know anyone, I was informed that Christine would be my stylist. When she was done with her previous client and upon our consultation, I immediately felt a good vibe and connection. She was very friendly, warm and knowledgeable about all things concerning hair particularly curly hair---my texture. She offered a couple options and we proceeded to get my hair washed. Christine also washed my hair and continued with a great scalp massage. So nice. Once done, and in a matter of no time, my hair was cut and blown dried straight. Since I specified I didn't want anything drastic done, I was very pleased with the end result. In the midst of addressing some personal concerns, I walked out feeling great! I like my new hairstyle and look forward to returning (and perhaps learning a few more tips about managing/styling my hair) to Christine. Michaela did an excellent job on my wavy/curly hair. I am super low-maintenance (read: lazy) about my hair and while I didn't have a specific cut in mind, I told her I wanted something manageable and easy, that I could just put product in and air dry. I said I wanted it thinned out and I didn't want to lose much length because I was growing it out. I left the specifics and the style up to her. I was a little nervous because I've had stylists ignore me in the past and cut too much off or just generally not do that good of a job. But Michaela is a total expert. She gave me EXACTLY what I was looking for and it looks awesome. I've gotten nothing but compliments (from both strangers and friends) since I got it cut yesterday. I purchased a livingsocial deal for a "wash, cut, and blow out." I went in last October and was super excited for a haircut considering I hadn't gotten one in almost a year. I don't remember much about scheduling the appointment and if I had any issues but I'm sure if I had I would remember (it's been 7mo). The reason for a 2 star rating has nothing to do with the actual haircut, which I absolutely loved, or even the stylist (she was awesome and very friendly) but with the way they charge customers using vouchers so much more money to sort of get back what they lost offering the voucher deal in the first place. Now, you may be a little confused with what I mean by this. Let me explain. I paid $30 for a wash, cut, and BLOW OUT. After cutting my hair the stylist told me that it would cost me more money to straighten my hair using a blow dryer. What!? So was she just gonna blow dry it puffy and frizzy?? I have naturally curly hair (3b) and this is not the first salon I've frequented. I've never been told this before! Obviously, I agreed to it because I wasn't gonna leave the salon looking like a hot mess. The "blow out" cost me an extra $35 even though the deal was supposed to include this and nowhere on the voucher did it say there would be an additional fee for it. I believe she also used a flat iron to make my hair a bit straighter and I was also charged extra for it-- $20 more. Although, on the receipt it says "curling iron" I'm not sure it makes a difference. After taxes everything I ended up paying $60.18 on top of the $30 I had already paid for the livingsocial deal. Can you please explain to me in what world is this a deal!?! It's a total ripoff and I'm never coming here again for this reason. Word of advice to the owner of this salon: Don't offer deals on websites such as Living Social, Groupon, etc if you're just gonna end up charging the customer even more money for having a voucher. I wonder how much the haircut would've cost me without the deal...their website advertises $65 for a haircut with blowout but I paid a total of $90.18. read more

After so many crappy hair cuts I was on the hunt for a place worth my money. I have been looking for a good hair dresser for over a year now since I've moved to this part of Brooklyn and I'm so happy I found Christine!! She really made me feel as if how I felt and looked after my appointment mattered as much to her as it did to me. She sat down and really got to understand what I wanted to do with my hair color and style, she took the time to answer all of my questions, get my hair color just right (it came out a bit too red at first and she fixed it right up for me) and even gave me tips on how to manage my hair type/make my style last longer. I see some comments saying they recommend hair treatments.... While she did recommend products for me to use I did not feel pressured to buy anything, nor did she sneak in any extra costs even though she used a ton of hair dye on my super long hair. While I got a great deal through Groupon to use here, I would pay regular price for these results. read more

This salon recently opened in my neighborhood and I had been meaning to check it out. When I saw a Google Offer for a cut or color, I jumped on the deal and made my appointment right away, figuring it would be a good way to test out of this can be my new go-to salon. Man am I happy that I didn't pay full price for this place. Here's my main complaint: When I booked my appointment for color, I was asked if I wanted to add a blowout. I said no. When I arrived at the salon, I again informed the receptionist that I was just there for a color. And yet somehow, after spending 2.75 HOURS in the salon for just a single process gloss color, I was charged $39 for a blowout after the stylist hurriedly and haphazardly blow dried my hair after telling me she wanted to "test the color" because I had been uncertain about it. Never once did she inform me that the 10 minutes she spent frying the ends of my hair with her super-powered blow dryer was going to cost me more than the color itself. She also then disappeared and left the very nice shampoo girl to inform me that I had just been charged for a service I never asked for. Also, I noticed the next day that whatever color they used (or perhaps the fact that they left me sitting with it on for over an hour), caused a rash along my hairline that I've never had before and I've had my hair colored plenty of times before. In summary: the color itself was not very good; the products they used caused a rash; the salon is either way overbooked or understaffed because one stylist was "taking care of" 4 of us at a time, which resulted in a lot of waiting around with chemicals on your head; and they employ what seem to me to be sketchy sales practices. Note: I hate it when people just rant on Yelp instead of taking it up with the manager or owner of the business, so I wanted to add that I emailed the owner that night to tell her about my experience, in what I thought was a very reasonable/non-ranting fashion, and I never heard back from her, even to acknowledge she got my email and was sorry about my experience. Edited to add: After I posted this review, I did get a response from the owner. While she didn't agree with me that it was problematic that I was never told a price or told I was getting an additional service, it is true that she offered me a blowout. Which is pretty ironic, since my complaint was about how I was given a blowout when I didn't want one. Also, the rash and uneven color weren't apparent to me until the next morning, so it is true that I did not address that complaint in my initial email to the owner. But given her lack of response to my first complaint, I figured there was no point in adding a second one. read more

I work in the neighborhood and have been passing by ever since this place opened, so I took advantage of a Groupon (which can only be used on certain days and at certain times) and left with a good haircut that was what I wanted. I was unable to show my stylist, Christina, the pictures on my phone, and despite my iffy descriptions, the cut she gave me was exactly what I wanted. Two things didn't sit well with me. First, it was suggested to me that I should use a pre-treatment on my hair when I dry it or use a flat iron. Okay. But at the end of the cut, I'm told, "We'll just go ahead and add it to your tab." Huh. Now, I could have said no, but being that I got a good deal on the cut via Groupon, I didn't. (I'm kind of a sucker for high quality hair and makeup.) But this added $30 to my tab that was otherwise nonexistent, because I had already purchased the Groupon. It felt like they were going to get the full price of a cut (about $60) one way or the other. The second really strange and off-putting thing was that when I inquired about the cost of a bang trim, I was told that it costs the same as a woman's cut. Who in their right mind would pay $65 for a BANG TRIM? It was really bizarre. I've been to other salons in Manhattan that offer free or nominally priced bang trims; I'm willing to pay up to $20 if it means being able to see and still growing out my hair when I'm not ready to get a cut. I really wish that I could've given Salon 718 more stars, especially because it's so close to work. I probably won't go back unless I can get another Groupon. read more

I am curly girl who needs an occasional blow out/press. I have never been in a salon that took great care with curly, kinky, and straight hair on all types of people like Salon 718! The treatments recommended added super moisture to my hair while straight, and the fab cut made my curls looks fantastic! My hair did not smell burnt (like at the Dominican Salons); which is why curly girls should NOT go to those places! Sunshine & crew really took care of my hair and I highly recommend this salon. I went here a while ago on a Groupon, and I'm sorry to say I really wasn't happy with the cut and style I received. Although the stylist was friendly and seemed confident, she spent only a short time with the scissors, which surprised me - I had asked for a proper cut, not just a trim. After she was done cutting, I could barely see any difference in my hair at all. Matters weren't improved by a heavy-handed attempt to get my hastily dried hair to curl using a diffuser. After what seemed an age, she finally gave up, but by then my hair looked like I'd been dragged through a hedge backwards! It was also sticky and stiff with all the product that had been poured on it. I washed it all off as soon as I got home. Also, they charge $30 extra for using a flat iron on your hair after drying. In most establishments this sort of thing is considered to be a finishing element of the overall service, and certainly not something you'd be charged extra for. I declined, although ironically she spent much longer wrestling with my hair trying to get it to curl than if she had just run a straightening iron over it! I wasn't too bothered, since thanks to the Groupon it hadn't cost me much (other than time), but had I paid full whack I'd have been very unhappy indeed. read more

I can't recommend Salon 718 highly enough! I had my hair cut, colored and styled by Christine. Wow is all I can say I felt so amazing when I left, I dont think Ive ever been so pleased with my hair. From the moment I walked in she was taking care of me. I had an idea of what I wanted from pictures but Christine made it work for me, she didn't rush me and took her time to listen to my ideas. We added beautiful rose gold highlights all throughout my dirty blonde hair and it came out so stunning and natural. But beyond my hair I was just so impressed with the vibe of the place. As a manager, Christine was so full of joy, completely professional and so kind to everyone else working; the salon felt relaxed and comfortable and not uptight or stuffy at all like other salons. This was my first time here but all the other clients around me clearly had great relationships with other hairdressers and stylists. The entire staff is extremely warm, friendly, and attentive. Prices are extremely fair for the area and the location is conveniently accessible by almost every train in Brooklyn. I have been intimidated in the past by salons that try too hard to present an upscale atmosphere (silk robes and other unnecessary accoutrements that up the price) but 718-Dekalb is not like that at all! Though they do carry luxury products and the space is spotless and beautiful, you feel like you're just hanging out in a hometown no-frills salon. I cannot rave enough about Christine Valentin! If you are a natural curly girl you need to make an appointment with her YESTERDAY because she hooked. me. up. I've had the Devacut before and though the result is always great, I find that the appointment takes forever and I always struggle with upkeep and maintenance. Christine is fast, thorough, and you can tell that she loves what she does and pours herself into her work. She was extremely responsive to my questions and concerns and thoroughly went over a personal routine for me to maintain my natural curls and keep them healthy in a way that I've never experienced with the Devacut. I am thrilled that I found her and she is the only stylist I will go to from now on! After YEARS of blunt force salon Trauma, I tried 718 after finding a groupon and reading some great Yelp reviews. They were incredibly flexible and accommodating of my last minute schedule changes, which was such a relief. Everyone is fun, polite, and totally down to earth- great for post-tomboy like myself. Atmosphere was great, complete with white wine (or a delicious chai, in my case) Also, everyone here seems completely comfortable with natural hair: Curly Girls of all colors and creeds, look no further! Christine is an incredible stylist! Loved her vision for my super short dreams, and gave me some great advice about how to look great and keep it low maintenance. She's also a great colorist, and my highlights were perfect! The only tiny downside for me was the cost of a few added extras- the ladies let me know I'd need a glaze to go with my highlights- but the $65 price tag, in addition to a $35 product purchase and the tip, came close to breaking the bank after the Groupon. I wish that had been clearer before i booked the appointment, but it was still worth it. In short: spend the money if you have it, get the Groupon I'd you don't: this salon is the real deal, and worth every penny!! read more

I really wanted to like this place, for my sake more than anything. I've had terrible, nightmarish experiences with hair stylists for years, and I enter every salon with trepidation. I recently moved to NYC from Los Angeles, where I had found my dream stylist who ALWAYS left me leaving her chair with an excellent cut. And then I moved to NY, and I was forced to begin anew in my search for a good stylist. Given my background with hair salons, I did not enter Salon 718 on a whim. I did some serious research and decided in the end that this could be what I was looking for. Or at least a place that would give me a decent cut. Enter Sunshine and Salon 718. Oh how I WISH I would have gotten a Groupon and NOT paid full price for this place. I am now sitting not-so-pretty with a horrible cut that I could have gone to a beauty school and paid $20 for a student to give me a comparable look. I booked my appointment online, which went smoothly. I scheduled a consultation 30minutes before the actual cut, because I wanted to ensure that I would have plenty of time to discuss with my stylist what I wanted, what I didn't want, etc. I had pictures. Many pictures. I showed her, not just described, what I wanted. I wanted layers and some bangs, and I really don't know how, at this point, that is something so difficult to do. My hair looks terrible. The layers are not blended, the cut all around has no shape, when it dries it just looks like a square with poorly done bangs... I mean, come on!! Really?!! I have had GOOD cuts in the past from my stylist in LA, and I know a good cut should be wash and go ready. A good cut should look great without doing anything to it. I have tasted the sweet nectar of an excellent cut, and now, NOW, I can never be satisfied with mediocrity. I am generally a positive person, a hopeful person. I wanted to convince myself that I could work with this cut. That it wasn't as bad as I thought when I first saw myself in the salon. I have tried MANY different looks with my hair since I went to the salon (about a week and half ago), but this is just not working out. This was a terrible mediocre cut, at best. And now I have to wait until I can hopefully find another place that will in fact provide me with a good hair cut. I must say, that the folks here are very nice, not snobby at all. The atmosphere is laid back and welcoming. But oh how I would trade a friendly atmosphere for a skilled stylist any day... I'm sorry Salon 718 and Sunshine, but I would not recommend people go here to get their hair cut. I know there are so many mixed reviews here so if in the end you decide to give it a go, all I can say is, proceed with caution.. read more

First off I did a lot of yelp research to find a salon to get a hair cut. Just about everyone said have Sunshine cut your hair, so I booked an appointment with her. You definitely get a true salon experience here. Sunshine did a great job on my cut. I showed her multiple pictures and we agreed on a look that would fit me. Now here is where I get a little turned off. Their website shows a range of prices for different services. So its hard to estimate how much you will be spending. My total was over $100, I was actually shocked, but I said hey, this is a one time thing. SIDENOTE: I find it funny that there is now a discount you get for mentioning yelp, I wish that deal was going on when I wanted to get my hair cut. Besides the great cut, I didn't like that my hair smelled like a flat iron. They need to get a new flat iron if their going to charge $20 to press your hair after they blow dry it. read more

I went in for my first hair color treatment with Kegan at Salon 718 and I am so happy I did. Sometimes being a hair color student it can be nerve-racking b/c you're someone's tester essential...however, the carefulness of the staff made me feel comfortable. Kegan really listened to me and my needs, told me exactly what she was doing while a senior stylist came over to check in my progress through the 2.5 hour appointment. That shows how much they care about you whether you're a client or a model. The entire staff is very warm and friendly, they made sure I had my jacket hung up and tea during my wait. The location is very convenient and it's very clean. I am definitely coming back on a regular basis and would highly recommend Kegan! read more

I would not recommend this salon if you have curly hair. The stylist , Sunshine, kept insisting that I get layers even though it's never worked for me. Eventually we settled on "long layers" ..... she cut my hair too short and didn't account for shrinkage. I now look like a poodle ... with a mullet. PS . Salons are seeking business on living social and other discount sites for a reason .... read more

I wish I could give this place more stars. The salon is clean and comfortable. The staff is friendly and the customer service is fantastic. They always do their best to accommodate my schedule. The first time I visited, the stylist I would see was running behind so the owner offered for me to have my make up done for free and it looked incredible. Michaella has styled my hair a couple of times for special events. I am a low maintenance gal with my hair and makeup but when I want to go for it, I go for it and I have such fun having my hair styled. Michaella makes my hair look amazing. I leave there feeling beautiful. If every service business operated like 718, Yelp would be full of 5 star reviews. I wouldn't go anywhere else for hair and/or makeup. The salon owner and head stylist Michaela is the most amazing hair stylist to ever touch my hair. I am not new to getting my hair done. I've been doing it since I was about 11 years old (relaxers every 6 weeks). Michaela helped get my hair to a healthy and manageable state by showing me how to style my hair without a relaxer. My hair is healthier than it's ever been & everytime I visit the salon everyone greets me with a smile . Don't wait to go see her - go see her now. read more
