So I go there to get my hair done with my roommate. I am from the mainland and I left a great hairstylist behind. So, I liked it and was happy, my roommate was happy with her haircut. So... why the rating? Because my other roommate wanted to go to get her haircut. She went and the person that did it totally botched her hair, did not listen to her, said he knew what was best, was condescending. So she calls and states she is unhappy after going home, she is told she can get her money back and if she wants her hair fixed by the SAME person. Umm... why would you want to go back to the same person who screwed you the first time???? Dumb. Anyways, we go back to get the money and the owner is there. Or one of the owners, I guess, grey hair, black mustache (or dead squirrel on head, bad dye job on the mustache) man. My roomie goes back in to speak to him, he is totally not understanding. He tells her that he has worked on cancer patients (???) and that her hair is fine. Basically doesn't care and tells her she should go back to where she came from. In front of the whole salon he spoke to her, not in a private room. Totally unprofessional. I made an appt to come back to get my hair done, but promptly cancelled. Not a random rant, if a business owner can speak to a paying customer like that in person imagine what he will say behind your back and to others he works with at the "salon." Never go back there and always will tell everyone how horrible this place is. read more

I spent a lot of time looking at reviews before choosing this salon. When I called I told them I had fine light colored hair and that I would like someone that had experience in my hair type. I wanted a highlighting and cut. My hair damages easily and wanted minimal added damage. I asked for a natural looking blended highlight using small strands of hair. Nearly my whole head of hair is now bleached. She left the chemical on twice as long as needed. She was eating lunch and reset my timer. Three different stylists came over to look at the timer because they were waiting for it and knew I was there too long. Finally when she was done with lunch we had to wait another 10 minutes for a sink. I am devastated. My hair is ruined both due to looking like a totally bleached blond and the damage is terrible. She did offer to put in 'low lights' but I will wait until I get home and find someone that knows how to work on my hair type. I got just the opposite of what I wanted. Price would have been OK if I hadn't gotten my hair destroyed. 4 days later and my hair is breaking off leaving rows of stubs. read more

I called to make an appointment and told the receptionist that I wanted to donate my hair to an organization which meant that to cut my hair, I would need to have it rubberband and placed in a ziplock. When I came in, DEE, male, had no idea what I wanted to do. Poor communication. T hen, he took 3 1/2 hours to cut my hair!!! Extremely slow!!! He looks professional, but cuts like an amateur; very deceiving. He showed me a pic of a hair cut he did, then asked me to take my pic. I think he was just starting to build his portfolio. Yikes!!! Nice talker, but not so great hair stylist. I had to come in again to fix my hair. It was better, but still needed fixing. I ended up purchasing a scissors at Sephora and cut my own hair...for 5 consecutive days!!! After I did my own hair fixing, people said it looked a lot better. $45 was a waste...plus tip! Oh boy...never again. I guess it is the hair stylist that you should beware of when you go to this salon. NOT DEE. read more

I got my haircut by Markie and he was really great. I went with my friend to get her haircut and I was super excited about her hair and so I got my haircut then and there. Best haircut I have had for awhile since I moved here. My roommate not so lucky! She goes there and gets her haircut and she gets a horrible mullet! The person that cut it was horrible and really did not listen to what she wanted. She went back to get her money and she spoke to the owner. He asked her where she was from and when she said where he told her to go back there. WOW! That was really great and totally professional. So glad that these are the people that do Pageant hair supposedly. Don't go there and spend your money, you will wast it. read more

As a busy hairstylist from San Francisco, I had no time to get my hair done before my trip to Hawaii. So when I got to Honolulu I immediately yelped hair salons and found Salon 808. After reading the consistently good reviews for Angela I decided to book an appointment for highlites and a cut, and I'm sooo glad I did! Angela was amazing!! She listened to everything I requested and did a fantastic job. I'm not a very fussy client, but I am in the same industry so I know great talent when I see it. I was in need of a new a salon after going to same one for many years. So I decided to go to Salon 808. I went once many years ago and I really liked what they did with my hair. So this time around I went to Haugen and he was great. He is a great person all around and is good to have conversation with. The first time I had Haugen, he showed me three different ways on how to style my hair and an alternative to using hairspray. I mean i had the same hair style for years and it was time to change. The cut last received was accomplished most speedily and the result was not accomplished. It was not the calibre that I had received when I first started with Kevin at Salon 808 two years ago. He did marvelous work then but now, with each visit, Kevin seems to race faster to finish "the job". If the end product was stylish, the speed in addressing my hair needs would be great but unfortunately the end product is not great and this time is the last time I will patronize Kevin. GREAT HAIR COLORING AND CUT! I never write reviews. I was in town for a week. Didn't know any hair salons. Took a shot in the dark and ended up at Salon 808 by AlaMoana. Louie did my hair. It was the BEST weave and haircut I've ever gotten. He was articulate, patient and fun to talk to. At Thanksgiving dinner EVERYONE commented on my hair cut. Haugen is super nice and I absolutely LOVE him to death! I got a super bad haircut a long time ago and he fixed it realllly good and he gives super good massages after he washes hair *gush* lol anwyways...He also does good prom/special function hair styles...he got a lot of practice for my cousins pageant and is still learning but he get a good amount of help from Dennis who LOVES hair and he's also VERY VERY good! I first learned about Ryan Sales and Salon 808 in 1994 when I complimented a waitress on her haircut. Her hair was similar to mine...thin with a tendency to fly away. Short, sassy, athletic...but able to style into soft and feminine. When she told me who cut her hair she also pointed out that the other waitress went to Ryan as well. The other waitress had thick, long, and wavy hair. I knew any stylist that could do great cuts on the extremes was the stylist for me. It's now 2012 and I drive 45 miles to still get my haircut here. read more

Haugen. I've been his client now since his Paul Mitchell days. I've watched him grow to become an awesome hairstylist. He always wanted to try something "new" for me and a lot of times, I refused. Saw him recently for a haircolor and trim and I am so happy with the results. A lot of stylist color what they want or think what will look good on you, Haugen colors what he believes will compliment YOU, even if you're an old fuddy duddy grandma like me. Not recommended to all Asians, I went there yesterday and got the worst haircut I ever had. My hair dress was patient and worked really hard but he had absolutely no idea what he was doing. I showed him a picture of what I wanted to look like and the hair cut I got was NOTHING like that, not even a bit. Remember the haircut I got at last was under my step by step supervision for the last 30 minutes, before that my hair looked even worse. I am holidaying in Hawaii from Australia, and needed to get some highlights (partial) and a trim. Marisa was my stylist, I described what colour I liked and she absolutely got it spot on. The colour blended in perfectly with my natural colour and previous highlights. The salon was comfortable, cool and calm (not noisy). Price range was reasonable. I had an appointment with Janet today to do the Japanese straight perm. I have typical hawaiian hair - thick, long and lots of it lol we had estimated $4-500 (at least 4 hrs) which was reasonable to me considering my length. Janet is so welcoming and easy to talk to. And she got it done in less time anticipated, so final cost was $300 plus tip. I was stoked! And I feel so beautiful! If you know, you know - hair can be a big deal in terms of confidence. I'm only visiting for a short time and was trying to hold out till I got back to CA but I had to get some attention paid to my hair...and did I ever make the right decision. To go in "cold" and have someone have such an artistic understanding of what looked good on me is not often found. It'll get a little pricey to come here everything i need a "do" but if I could I would. Since I commute from Tokyo to LA this might become a reason to layover in HI more often. read more

I've been going to Salon 808 for the past year and a half and I always see Janice. She does such a wonderful job. She also has the best shampoo girl, so personable and easy to talk to. I recently recommended my cousin to Janice and she loves her hair too.. Just a pointer: Janice can really blow dry your hair..I walk out looking and feeling wonderful.
