*CALLING ALL BLONDES* If you are looking for a stylist that has experience with blondes look no further friends!! I just finished my appointment with Jessica and I am beyond happy. First off- I requested an appointment with her via Yelp, and she responded promptly within the hour and I booked my appointment within the same week. Secondly-I am clueless when it comes to telling stylist what I am looking for. I always just says..."meh, highlights?" But would often leave the salon feeling like I wasn't blonde/bright enough. Today, for example- I walked into my appointment and was looking to get highlights that would lighten and brighten (I'm a natural dark shade blonde aka dirty blonde) well, when I showed her the picture of what I was looking for she informed me that the blonde in the picture was a full color bleach blonde (told you, I'm clueless). Jessica took the time to discuss how we could get as close as possible to that look with the expectation that I wouldn't be completely one color blonde all over. This route would be healthier, less expensive and much easier to maintain than full color bleach blonde. I could tell within the first 5 minutes that I wasn't just another appointment to her, she wanted to make sure that I was satisfied with the results. Needless to say, I fully trusted Jessica's vision. I got "1/2 head highlights-with a few extra foils". (1/2 head= level of ears and up). She scheduled plenty of time for my appointment so their was no rush- just perfection. The salon was clean, friendly environment. My appointment lasted about 3 1/2 hours for half head highlight with extra foils, shampoo/conditioner and blow dry. All for well under $200. (Didn't want to disclose exact price just in case it may vary) but she will give you a quote before she gets started. Result- exceeded my expectations! I absolutely love the brightness and my hair feels healthier than ever (see pics for proof) and it didn't cost me what I have paid for at other salons, but less satisfying results. I'm so glad I did my research and found this amazing human. I found my forever Hawaii salon and Highlighting Queen! Thank you Jessica! Dont go here for layers!! Ruined my hairstyle- very choppy haircut - did not blend well at all. Too much volume even after haircut. Weird square shaped hairline when seen from the back. I am in the military, but I hate looking like I just got the old $8 chop up at the exchange. When I moved to Honolulu, I searched high and low for a replacement tonsorial artist. Luckily, I moved into the Imperial building on Cooke and Kapiolani, and my answer resided on the street level. I met Bowie when he was chilling out in front of the place, and asked him if he had any time available for a cut. He brought me right in and I was treated to one of the best all scissor cuts I have ever had. I felt like my head of hair was a bonsai tree, being perfectly trimmed to meet high aesthetic standards. Needless to say, I almost exclusively let Bowie touch my hair, and I recommend him to all of my friends. It might cost a little more than getting a rat bite at the exchange, but I have always felt that your hair is one of the first things that people notice about your appearance. read more

I go to Jessica and she is AMAZING! First of all, I have never met a hairstylist who listens as well as she does. She genuinely wants to make sure her work is not only quality, but is EXACTLY what you want. I first went to her for a haircut and she did such an amazing job I went back to get my hair colored about a month later. A week after getting it colored she texted me asking how my hair was doing, and if I was satisfied with the color. I am no stranger to a hair salon, I almost always color my hair every other month, but I have NEVER had a hairstylist follow up with me after I've left the salon (unless I'm the one doing the follow-up). Bowie has been cutting my hair since I was 17 which means I've been coming here for....uh....2 years. Kidding. We just realized today he's been cutting my hair for 11 years and I'm hoping he'll be cutting it for at least 11 more. I live in LA now and if I had a huge bankroll, I would either fly him out to LA once a month to cut my hair or I'd fly myself out here to get it cut. I've yet to find anyone out in my City Of Angels who can cut hair like Bowie. Actually, he doesn't just cut my hair. Bowie's the person I run/fly over the friggin' Pacific Ocean to see when I'm in tears because someone butchered my hair. He'll take one look at me, silently lift the chopped and massacred mass of what's left of my hair, meet my tearful eyes in the mirror, flash me his trademark smile and say in that super mellow voice "Okay, Bonnie. Don't worry. We're going to fix this. So! Tell me what you've been up to!". In Bowie's hands, scissors become instruments of magic. As I chatter away at him, he effortlessly smooths away the mistakes of others and my anxiety over the state of my hair melts away like a bad dream I've already started to forget. By the time he shows me what my hair looks like, I am in tears again but this time they are ones of joy and gratitude. You might think it's silly to be so fanatical about something you know will grow in time and write off the importance of someone who understands how hair ties into a person's perception of themselves. I used to be like that...until I had someone chop my hair into what looked like an EKG pattern into my bangs AND the back of my head. Salon Capello is amazing!! I just got my hair done today, for the first time in a year and a half. After 3 crappy haircuts, 1 which left me in tears, I was willing to find the best, and thats when I stumbled upon Salon Capello on yelp. I asked for Bowie the store owners and I was impressed. The haircut itself was an hour and a half of meticulous work on Bowie's behalf. He took the time to ask me how I wanted my hair and it was exactly the way I pictured it. My mother has been a client of Jody's (co-owner) since the 90's and through middle and high school I used to follow her to her hair appts. It wasn't till I was in college that I had enough money to afford more than a $10 haircut. Since then, I have not looked back and it's been a good 12 years of hair days! A few years back, I left the corporate world and enrolled in cosmetology school (Paul Mitchell and Aveda) and have had a lot of haircuts along the way...there is no one I trust more than Jody. Let's just say, each time my hair gets messed up because some instructor wants to cut/color it or a classmate wanted to "try" something, I've turned to Jody to fix it. Let's just say I rather pay 10 times more than get another free haircut/color. Lesson repeated and learned the hard way. I now reside in CA and fly back to HI biannually and i defintely find time to squeeze in a haircut/body wave perm! I wish I could fly back frequently since it's best to get a trim every 6 wks and not every 6 months. However, since Jody is such a master "hair" craftsman, my hair grows out perfectly and I retain the shape. I still get compliments months after and from working in salons in the past, I've had coworkers comment on how my hair grows out perfectly without having to get it maintained! A malihini to Honolulu, I was way overdue for a haircut and color. I loved the reviews on Yelp for Salon Capello and decided to give it a try. Anna was my stylist and she sure had her work cut out for her! My mane needed taming and I also asked for highlights in addition to covering roots. She was very thorough, checking in with me at different intervals to decide on how light the highlights would be. The whole process took 4 hours, and the end result was a lighter and more youthful cut and color I could work with with copious amounts of beach and swimming time. Anna has a quiet sensibility, but after a little prodding for conversation, she opened up and I enjoyed her adventurous spirit. It might be the military spouse in me, but when we get to our new destination, making conversation, alliances, and friendships are front and center, running a close second to a great color and style. (which becomes critical right before Military Balls and other formal events, which we have annually.) A delicate balance must be reached when entrusting a new stylist with one's tresses and a great test of trust between both people. My other half referred me to Bowie for my next haircut. I had been in a hair rut and my hairdresser of 7 years had been unable to get me out of it. She had worked with me since my mid-20s, when beauty and youth were still on my side. Bowie was a last resort, so I had low expectations. I didn't know what I wanted him to do, and other than specifying I wanted to keep the shoulder length and that the previous layers were cut to add body to my crown, I spared him the monologue. I sat down to a nice shampoo and intense scalp massage. This thought crossed my mind: If I didn't like how he cuts, I will come back regularly for this. Since he doesn't have nails, he can apply firm pressure without clawing your scalp. I was so relaxed, I nearly fell asleep. Bowie worked in polite silence for the rest of the hour. I looked around at the modest size salon with hair products I mostly never heard of. The moment of truth happened as Bowie was blow-drying my hair with a round brush: Wow, how did he know what to do? The cut was flattering for my face shape, which isn't the easiest to work with (I have prominent features, which make me self-conscious). Yet, the layers looked cool and effortless, unlike the fussy layers my previous hairdresser would give me. Wispy longish side bangs grazed my cheekbones, softening my face. I asked him what kind of cut this was so I can request it again. He chuckled, saying that his cuts don't have names. He looks at the person's face and how her hair is, and he knows what to do. So basically he has both the skills and the artistic talent to cut hair. (Later, I found out he is one of the salon's co-owners.) I went out and bought a large round brush so I can try to duplicate Bowie's style at home. Even though I don't get it right, it still falls right. I have a new lease on life. I will no longer be tying my hair back. Oh, and he charges as much as my previous hairdresser. He's worth every penny. In sum, it's hard to risk what's safe on what's uncertain, but I am glad I did. I thoroughly enjoy my hair cut and the location is great: It's actually a shorter drive, and I enjoy eating pho at the Vietnamese place next door. read more

I LOVE my new haircut! My hair was just flat, boring, dull and weighed down. It was silently screaming for help! I've been contemplating going short... I meant "short" for a really really long time but never mustered up the courage to do so as my hair has always been long. So I said to heck with it, let's chop it all up! Not literally bald though. Thanks to Yelp, and after reading DomR's review I decided to give Bowie a try as my dry kinky curly hair which is too easily butchered by the standard franchised men's hair saloons. I was a bit apprehensive having my hair cut in Honolulu after having my hair cut for years by the excellent owner operator stylist at Odyssey Hair Designs in Stamford, CT by an Italian man who really could compete with Vidal Sassoon. To my pleasure, Bowie spent near an hour on my scalp, washing and trimming my hair to perfection. He was also very personable in making me feel welcomed and comfortable. He took me in for my appointment at 9 AM, which I appreciated, because I don't like having my hair cut in front of women, so I had the place all to myself. First off, I just have to say that Jessica is FANTASTIC! She was warm, friendly, made me feel right at home took the time to find out exactly what I wanted done, before getting started. This is the first cut and highlight that I have had done since moving from the Mainland in February. I was a little nervous because I had a great stylist that I had gone to for the past 4 years back in Missouri, and finding someone new can be a bit of a daunting task. I am so glad that I was able to find Salon Capello and Jessica :o) As far as price is concerned, it was about $50 more expensive for a cut and all-over highlight than I paid on the Mainland, but everything seems to be more expensive on the island, so it was what I expected to pay, and well worth every penny! read more

Although it is on the pricier side it is 100% worth it for quality balayage - I've done consultations for balayage in NY, SF Bay Area, and Oahu and was hard pressed to find someone who is as truly dedicated to making sure you walk out with a smile on your face and loving your hair. After a botched hair cut on Maui, I had to wait 2 months before I went to an island with a decent salon. Based on yelp reviews I visited Capello and saw Jody. I knew nothing about him except that he was highly recommended, but it was great to hear that he was from Hong Kong (where I lived for 2 years) so we had some stuff to chat about. He did a great job on my hair. I'm a guy with a pretty average hair style so it wasn't exactly rocket science, but he didn't treat me like an easy job and took his time and made sure everything was done the right way. Not super cheap for a guy's cut, but for a salon the prices were pretty average. I don't get to Oahu too often, but if I'm there and I need a haircut with some technical precision, then I will head back to Salon Capello and have Jody help me out again. read more
