Had long hair and wanted to go for shoulder length cut (probably 6 in off) -- started with a rough chop, got hair thoroughly shampooed and washed, then styled for long layers based on a reference photo and explanation I needed to keep it long enough for a pony tail. I have been coming to Salon de Hong Kong for years. It's one of the few places that can cut my Asian hair right and does straight perms. Over the years, I have used all the stylists and they are all well-trained and do a fine job. Some people make appointments with specific stylists, but because I don't care, I frequently walked in without an appointment and always had good service. They are busy, especially around Chinese New Year. However, I am constantly amazed at how efficient they are. The stylists would perm one person's hair and cut another at the same time...and answer the phone at the same time. They are all very good at multi-tasking. Cash only. Came in at 940am for a walk in hair cut. Joy was the one that was available so I had her cut my hair. I usually have Kay cut it but was told that she wouldn't be in until 10:30am and I didn't want to wait. I've had Joy cut my hair in the past as well so I didn't mind having her cut it this time. The haircut was quick and exactly what I wanted. I usually just go for the layered hair look and long enough to tie it but short enough that it actually looks different. I cut off a good pound of hair which is great especially since it's summer. The cost for a haircut for females are now $25 before tip. I've been coming here for years even when the price was only $16. In terms of covid precautions, you have to wear a mask in order to get a haircut. The piece they usually drape over you when getting a haircut is not a plastic piece which is more covid friendly so not everyone is using the same drape for their cut. Although the price increased, I still enjoy coming here because I trust that they will cut it right. Other places I've been to cuts it way too short where I can't tie it and leaves me disappointed because I need to tied for work. As for the business hours, I believe it is 9am to 7pm daily, at least according to google. Julie always gives me what I want so this is what the five stars are for. She doesn't talk too much(which I like), she's fast, and knows what she's doing. I've gotten extremely short, medium, long haircuts, perms, washes, and oil treatments from her and I loved every one of them. However, I would rate this place with 2 stars because it's so outdated. Parking is hard to find on weekends and you have to pay meter when you park close. If there's a wait you can always grab some food nearby and bring it back to eat while you wait. read more

I was feeling adventurous and now I look like a mushroom. I came here because I decided to give other salons a shot instead of going to my usual salon in Chinatown. I come here around 3pm after work and the place is empty. THAT should've been my sign to GTFO of there. 3 ladies are sitting there just chatting and the oldest one gets up and helps me. So I sit down and show her a zoomed up picture of the hair I wanted (straight bangs with slight sweep and fringe) and I even expressed to her in Cantonese, that I was terrified and if I looked bad I would not want to show up for work. She tells me there's nothing to be afraid of. She starts snipping away and layers my hair, which she did terribly, she cut it but only layered it twice, I usually have it layered triple( light on top) so my hair gets volume. HERES THE FUNNY PART. As she was cutting my hair, she was having a bitching convo with the other 2 hair stylst. Basically, they were complaining how people can't bitch at them for giving them bad hair cuts and how they won't stand for that and will bitch right back at them. Then the lady cutting my hair goes, if anyone ever said that to me I'd be like "You can't say I CAN'T cut hair, I have a license." I didn't think much of it during that time. *Comment on the license part* OKAY, I don't know where you got your license from, lady but I don't think you deserve to flaunt that. Maybe people are complaining about you guys for a reason. Next step, she cuts my front bangs, honestly my heart was racing when she did the first snip and faster as she did the rest. She cuts it and I look horrible, she tries to fix it all around but it honestly only made it worse and I told her to stop cutting before it got too short. I got up, tried to fix it a little bit in the mirror and made faces and told her I didn't like it and left without tipping her. HERES my update. I youtubed blunt bangs videos and you are suppose to only cut the bangs not exceeding the end of your eyebrows BUT this lady cut from ALLL THE WAY across so now my bangs are super bulky and makes me look like a mushroom. I also concluded that the hairstyle I wanted was actually just normal straight bangs but styled and straightened sideways with a slight fringe. Overall, I'm super dissatisfied with my haircut and I have to spend wayyy too much time fussing over it in the morning with hair products. Sure it was cheaper than my usual haircuts, but it was not worth a penny. I'm waiting for my hair to grow out so I can go to a better salon and give the hairstyle another shot. Lesson learned from this, Get the f#$% off your seat if you EVER hear your stylist complain about customers saying they can't cut hair. read more

I guess I'm not that surprised to see negative reviews here - it's a super inexpensive Chinese salon. I don't know why anyone on Yelp seems to expect quality when they are paying basement prices. And I actually don't know what their prices even are anymore. They charged me 14 last year for a cut, and ever since then, I've slipped them a $20 bill and went on my way. These ladies are nice. As others have said, the place is dirty. But they get the job done and honestly remember what I want cut every 4-5 weeks I come in. My requests are very simple for a man's do: super short on the sides and just a little off the top. I get the impression at a lot of places that the stylist thinks they know better than I do. The place needs to be renovated and I was a bit bothered finding chopsticks & other utensils on the counter in front of me right next to the combs soaking in the see-through disinfectant container. I go in, get my white hairs colored, get blow dried, & I'm on my merry way. Plus - they do organic, ammonia-free hair coloring and Kay was the one who did this for me. I always ask for Kay as I would like to say that I am a loyal customer to a specific stylist. Since I came, they have increased the price by $2 to a total of $16 for men's haircut. Even after moving downtown, I'm still willing to make the trek to inner Sunset to get my hair cut by Joy. She's consistent, attentive, and conversational-all great characteristics of a worthy hairdresser. And most importantly, she actually listens to you. Most encounters I've had with other Chinese hairdressers are that they don't listen to what you want and end up cutting your hair to a fashion THEY think is best for you. Then you're just looking like a fool for the next three months. I go to Joy because I found a good thing. That's what smart people do. I must admit, it's not the bougiest hair salon. When in SF this is my go to spot for a trim. It's conveniently located on Irving, next to a bunch of great spots to grab a bite. I usually try to come on the weekdays to avoid traffic and find parking easily. If you try to come on the weekends, don't drive. I originally started coming here because it was one of the cheapest cuts around. Back then it was only $10 for a men's cut. Now it's around $12. Normally I would just walk in and take the first available stylist. Recently I've been going to Kay for my cut. She's very friendly, and gives me a consistent trim without me having to explain much. I moved away from SF to another state about a year ago but I still wait until I come back to visit to get my haircut. So after I have my tantrum, I get on net and look for any salon in the Haight. Found one. Bladerunners. And look Brandy has an opening the very next day. So I go to her still tender from evil hair monger's butcher job and explain what happened to me and beg her to help me fix what's left of my hair. I walk out smiling. This place has been open for years now. I am a loyal customer of Salon de Hong Kong, and 20 years later they still remember me as the girl who comes to get haircuts with her mom. They still fondly ask how school is going as if time stood still, and I let them know I graduated and am working now as if it all happened last week. The decor also hasn't changed since they opened, and some of the ladies were there since the beginning. I like that this salon allows for drop-ins and rarely if ever has a wait time of more than 10 minutes. I have done perms, highlights, and haircuts here and it is the cheapest place in the area. For $16, I can get a decent haircut without them washing my hair. I took off 1 star because each haircut is always different. And only after many years of coming here have I learned that when I ask to trim 1 inch, somehow 2-3 inches will be cut. If I ask for 1/2 inch trim, then it will barely look like anything was done to my hair. It takes time to get the length right, but it's fast and cheap! read more

I have been going here for over 10 years. (I remember because they give a free ice cream cone to children 10 years old and younger.. Smart ploy, getting us young.) I used to go to April but she left and tried someone new. Ended up with david. My whole family 5 ladies, daddy, aunt, and cousins all get our hair done by David and DAVID only and no we are not related at all to him. He is just a hair magician. He will tell you directly what will compliment your facial shape and which will cause you regret if you ask. His tips are really helpful and his prices are even moe unbelievable. I may be price sensitive but my family is definitely not. They are willing to pay $80 for a haircut as long as it is good. A female hair cut is $15.00 and we give him $5 for tip cause I feel bad giving him any less. Can you believe it , a quality hair cut for $20!!! I got my hair straightened and it was 150$ plus tip. He was so careful and put so much effort into it. He has a great technique, cool tricks, and a great demeanor. Other services we've tried coloring. Good work. He is always really busy with lots of customers so be prepared to wait. Parking is available but they are metered. Street parking is available but you need to walk further. JOY! She is my hairstylist. I've been going to her for the past 3-4 years and she knows my hair like no other. Before Joy, I dreaded going to hair salons. First of all, it was hard to decide which salon to go to, and then you have to know which stylist is the best. And then I found Joy. She's really good at listening to what you want. And she's also very talkative so you never feel awkward sitting there. And since we're such good friends now, if she's doing something that I don't like, I won't feel weird telling her. Like the other day, she gave me a trim, and when she was done and showed me the mirror to look at the finished result, I didn't hesitate to ask her if I could get shorter layers. And she's totally cool about it. And Joy is also suuuuper popular. She has so many customers. And people come in always asking for her, and of course she's always busy.
