I see Davey at Natural Elements for cut and color, and Jordan does my waxing. Both of them are great. I am in sales, and need to keep my look current and up to date. Davey has great ideas about what to do and he is friendly and fast, and he helps me on how to style my hair at home. I have been working with the salon owner, Edda for years, since she was a stylist at another salon, and now she is the owner. I now see others on the team, who fit more with my budget, and I am very happy with them. I don't want anyone else to do my hair. I can trust the staff at the salon. I not only get great advice on my look, I feel better about myself when I leave! Regarding the location, I can usually find free street parking in the area. I have also had makeovers here, and buy my makeup from them. I am not one to wear a lot of make up, but they have great ideas about a few products that will help me look great. Edda stocks a certain amount of jewelry that I have bought here that have become my favorite pieces. This is also a salon carrying Arrojo hair products, which I have come to love. I contacted the salon through Yelp and Edda responded within the hour. Went into the salon the next day to do a color fix. It was a little hard to tell if my hair was bright enough, so Edda offered to fix it up if I find that it was still a bit too warm for my liking. I haven't gone to the actual salon (yet!!), but the Owner, Edda, was a godsend today while I was poking around the beauty store trying to fix my hair color that had washed out way sooner than I would ever expect it to. She took the time out of her day to offer advice to me, and what she picked out was absolutely perfect! The color came out just the way she said it would, and I'm thrilled because before she said anything I had two different products in hand. I'm so glad I followed her guidance and got what she picked out! She seems to know her stuff, and the sheer nature of her willingness to help a complete stranger really struck me. I adore pedicures. Yeah, that's right. I'm too damn lazy to take care of my own feet and I love it when someone else trims my cuticles and polishes my piggies ... but the best part is the foot rub. Heaven! That being said, I'm also on a budget. Just 'cuz I live in Lincoln Park doesn't mean I'm made of money. I work P/T and I live with my BF who owns his own home. Money is for necessities! And boy, do I need pedicures! I've been going to Colorful Nails on Lincoln Avenue for the convenience because they're the closest nail place to where I live. They have always done decent work in no-frills surroundings. The workers are nice and the Sunday-Thursday mani/pedi special ($28) was in-line with my limited budget. On the weekends the price goes up to $35 ... still a decent price, IMO. [NOTE: I almost feel bad mentioning them in this review since I haven't ever bothered to review them on Yelp! I may still do so.] A couple of months ago the BF and I were strolling down Lincoln Ave. on the way home from lunch when we noticed that one of the vacant stores a block from our home had a work permit in the window and it said a new nail salon was opening there. Joy! An even closer nail spa to the house ... I could hardly wait. Wellness Nail Spa opened about 2 weeks ago and I've been peering inside the place as I take my dog on a daily walk past the spa. The menu in the window showed that they do manis, pedis, no-chips, and massage. They focus mostly on relaxing services. Don't come here expecting a full set of acrylic or nail tips 'cuz it ain't on the menu. The Signature Mani/Pedi is $40, more than I usually like to spend. But I was willing to pay for the convenience and the ambiance at least once just to get a feel for the place. Today I walked in and asked if I needed an appointment and the friendly lady at the front desk said they welcome walk-ins but appointments are accepted as well. The place is new and beautiful. Check out their web site to see their photo gallery (www.wnailspa.com). They were playing a decent mix of music from the 90's, 00's and current stuff (from Depeche Mode and Dr. Dre to The Lumineers). I went in and picked out my colors (Essie "Mesmerized" for my tootsies and Essie "Avenue Maintain" for fingers). I sat in the pedicure chair, set the remote for an invigorating back rub and settled in for my service. The nice girl who did my pedicure was very friendly and informative. She told me that at the end of the pedicure they give each client the small disposable emery board used on their toenails and the small buffing block so they can take them home to reuse or discard. They never use the same emery board or buffing block on anyone else's feet ... ever! Used once and done! I liked that a lot. The tools are all autoclaved for a minimum of 30 minutes after they've been used so that the next client is not being serviced with unsanitized tools. That's another PLUS in my book. They also do something I've never seen at any other salon. When they paint your digits they use a layer of base coat, followed by one layer of color, followed by ANOTHER layer of base coat. They finish off with one final layer of color then the sealing top coat. They claim this makes your color last longer. I hope this is true because I put my fingernails through HELL every day. I never wear gloves to do the housework and my job is murder on my hands. [NOTE: I may edit this review in a few days to let you know how the nail color is holding up.] While I was sitting at the nail dryer I was chatting with the young girl at the reception desk who signed me up for their loyalty program. I earned 2 points for my visit today. If I become a regular (and I think I will) each time I come back I earn points. When I reach 15 points I will receive a free Signature Manicure. In my mind it justifies my spending $40 per visit knowing that I get rewarded for my continued patronage (unlike at the other place I mentioned earlier in this review). Plus, they made note of the colors I used today in my "file" on their computer in case I want to use them again at a later date. They also signed me up for email alerts when they have special promotions. Ironically, after I came home from today's visit to Wellness Nail Spa there was a postcard in my mailbox from them with a list of some of their services and a coupon for $10 off a Mani/Pedi. That just made me guffaw! But I will definitely use it! :) BTW, since this place was not listed on Yelp! this morning I couldn't check in there. read more

Five stars for my stylist listening carefully to what I want, evaluating my hair (I have a lot but it's very fine), questioning me about my styling routine and giving me the perfect cut and color. She gave me options and made good recommendations-- and that is why I go to a hairstylist. (I've been to far too many places where stylists say, "OK, what are we doing today?" Really --- you're the expert. Tell me what you think). I went to Katie this time, but I'm confident that any styist (they're all certified colorists) would be good. This place is great! Katie did an amazing job on my hair. I came in and told her I wanted a new look, but had no idea what I wanted. She worked with me and gave me an amazing hair cut. I got a manicure a week ago from Ali. This is the longest my nail polish has ever lasted and that's saying a lot because I am very rough on my nails! It still looks amazing, I am very impressed! Ali was super friendly and knows a ton about skin and nails, etc. I felt very comfortable with the cleanliness of this salon and how she took precautions to make sure everything was disinfected. I was a little sad when my "stylist" left. But, today I tried one of the many other hairdressers here and found him to be quite excellent. And hilarious (which is always a bonus!). My hair is in the process of growing out, so nothing too extraordinary was done to it, but my shampoo was amazing. And the cut looks nice even if it is on the boring side (my choice). Only gave it four stars because I would advise against the eyebrow waxer. Went to her for a while and never hated my brows. But I also wasn't in love with them. After trying someone new elsewhere I decided that her wax method is one of extreme torture. Oh, and good news! They just renovated the basement and will soon (or maybe already are?) be offering manicures and pedicures! Can't wait to try it! PS - forgot to mention that the "hook" or "gimmick" at Natural Elements is that ALL (or 5/6) of the hairdressers are certified colorists. I guess this is unusual. They have been featured in many national magazines for this fact - so DEFINITELY a place I would recommend for color. read more

I always thought I had problem hair. Turns out I have had a succession of problem hair-stylists. Now, I don't have problem hair. I have awesome hair. I love Scott; he listens to me and somehow translates all the hair-related gobbledeegook coming out of my mouth into a haircut that not only looks good, but that I can handle doing in the morning. I do have to start off by saying my hair hasn't looked this good in a long time. I've been getting my hair highlighted for over 15 years and have almost always gone to the same stylist. There were times I was satisfied with her work and other times I barely noticed the difference! However, Edda really knows her stuff and she has given me some of the changes I've been wanting for years. Not only was my blonde fixed (there were multiple tones in there from a bad dye job), but the dark hair on the underside was completely brightened! Hello ponytails! I would give five stars but there was a little confusion as to scheduling and pricing that resulted in me having to come on back to back weekends as well as paying almost double what I initially expected. Quoted at $160 for the whole job, but ended up paying $82 the first weekend and $170 the second! Not quite sure what happened there, but regardless I'll be returning. It's pricey but the work done at this salon will keep me coming back as a loyal customer for what I hope to be a very long time! read more

This is the most amazing salon I've ever been to. And there's only a good handful I've been to. Salon Edda truly makes you feel like a princess and how they treat their clients is AMAZING. I walked in and was immediately greeted and took mine and my friend's jacket and offered a drink. Blue was truly a saint. She was the best stylist ever. Cut my hair to PERFECTION!!!
