A bit off the back and that's about it." I got tired of the pricey haircuts everywhere, plus all the fuss to get an appointment - another App to load? More texts? No thanks. He nodded to a nice lady who came over and got me in the chair and a smock - 20 minutes later, I walked out the door with a smile and that fresh feeling you get when you finally get the trim you needed. I will not get another haircut from Salon Familia. It started out with them sending me to get shampooed right away, without wanting to look at my hair dry first. When I got the shampoo, I said I had damaged hair, but was told they use the same shampoo and conditioner on everyone, including the 7 year old next to me. The cut was rough and felt more like a risky trip to a "Super Cuts like" salon...not a salon that charges $70 for a haircut. My guess is they charge a lot because it is in Chevy Chase DC. The stylist seemed inexperienced, and when I pointed things out, she just disagreed with me. Her idea of long layers was to hack at the ends with a pair of zig zag scissors, which left the shape blunt and bulky with little pieces sticking out. Not a good experience at all. read more

My husband took my two sons (4 and 6) here for a haircut and was too nice to say anything, but they got their worst haircut in their lives. (My boys have been still during haircuts for years, so there's really no excuse.) Uneven, choppy, complete with mullet and actual tufts of hair left on their necks. I could not believe both boys' sideburns were uneven (one cut, the other left long). This was not a professional work: it was amateurish at best and definitely not something we should have paid for. We had to take the boys to get a new haircut right away, and the new stylist could not believe what she was seeing. She actually said, "Don't tell people I've cut their hair, because I think I can only clean it up a little, it's so bad." I came in this summer for the first time to have a hair trim and explained I wanted about an inch off and shorter in front than back. I got way too much cut off and the hair was much longer in the front than the back. It has taken 3 months for my hair to be long enough in the back to put in a pony tail which is what I often do in the summer heat. Kim is our mainstay here: she is great with the wee ones - when my son was a tiny, squirmy boy she would give him the cleanest, sharpest cut in record time! She also understands curly hair since she has curls herself. Recommended her to a (curly) friend and now her family comes here too. New space is neatly laid out and freshly painted. I hadn't had my hair cut in awhile because of COVID so I went in with overgrown hair with dry, split ends. After a relaxing shampoo and conditioner from Maria I sat in the chair for a haircut and blow dry with Nini. I asked Nini not to cut my bangs because I am growing then out and she didn't cut them. Nini also checked with me before the first cut to make sure I wanted "this much" off. I appreciated that a lot. I came out with healthy hair and a great style. I love it. Found this salon be searching for salons "near me". I had requested overall hair coloring (no highlights) , brows waxed and colored to match new hair color, and a manicure with just a natural non-gel polish. I showed the employee a photo on my phone with the color I wanted to go back to (medium dark red). I was blonde when I went in, which was obviously not my natural color, as my eyebrows were light brown with graying. I left looking more like a goth girl, and the employee frantically pushed the shop's blinds open to show that there was a small glint of red visible in the sunlight. I came home, looked in the mirror, took a selfie (woman had told me that the color in the photo looked much lighter because of the camera flash) No. Not really a thing. So I cried, and went back for a refund. I explained my issue to the gentleman at the desk, and showed him the same photo I showed my colorist. Next thing I know, a different employee rushed over, said they could "fix it, no problem". So she and yet another employee put me in a chair and did what I assume was a "color correction" process. I only speak English, so have NO idea what the employees were saying as they were scrubbing on my head, but one did finally say how beautiful it looked. It still wasn't what I wanted, but my nerves were shot, and my head was hurting from the frantic scrubbing by 2 employees. 4 days after the manicure, it doesn't look like I even had one. The "vibe" wasn't remotely relaxing, but the good news was that they had an appointment available for the multitude of services within an hour of my call mid-morning. I have been going to Salon Familia for nearly 17 years. They were the first people to cut my daughter's hair when she was a toddler and they did a great job. The original owners sold the business to some of their staff a little more than a year ago. The women that now own it are incredibly friendly and are skilled hair stylists. They renovated and updated the salon last year and it looks great - a very comfortable and relaxing environment. I see more women here than men but I've always been happy with my haircuts there. You get a shampoo and haircut combined. Too bad to see the negative reviews because my guess is that those situations are extreme outliers. This place is worth your time and money. read more

We've been bring our 2.5-year-old here since he was one. He's had 4 or 5 haircuts and they've all been great. Now that he is older, he sits by himself in the chair and they explain every step to him making him enjoy the haircut. He also knows he'll get a sucker at the end. We don't even live in this part of town but make a special trip when it's haircut time! My husband also recently had a haircut there and had a very good experience. Where shall I begin....? My pretty wife has been going to Salon Familia for a while but is determined to find a better salon (wont be difficult). "Nini" consistently cuts too much hair off and tries to give my wife a senior citizen haircut. Maybe that is all she knows but she needs to listen to what her clients want. The owner is absolutely consumed with squeezing every red cent out of his customers that he can. I understand he is running a business but he takes it to the point of being offensive. They use inferior coloring products that require too-frequent trips back to the salon. Another disturbing thing is the number of men who frequent this place, which is clearly geared toward elderly women. Why arent these men in barber shops where they belong? I'm surprised by some of the poor reviews. We took our 1-year-old daughter here for her first haircut and it could not have gone better. The stylist, Ann, was patient and flexible, and very comfortable cutting toddlers' hair. She had no problem letting us take pictures and provide frequent guidance. The front desk even provided us with an envelope so we could save a lock of our daughter's baby hair. And they also take appointments. We will definitely be back. read more

I have only praise for Salon Familia. It astounds me that anyone would leave a bad review. The people are very good at what they do, and everyone is very friendly and welcoming. They even have a space where children can play while their parents are getting their hair and nails done. Do not come here for a child's haircut. Despite what the name would imply, this is not a family friendly establishment. We took our 2 year old for her first haircut. The staff was extremely unkind that she was nervous to get her hair washed and then told us if she took any longer (only a few minutes had passed) they didn't have time for us. I just got home from getting our three children's hair cut here. They charged me $70 for my daughters hair trim as she is 12 and she has "long" hair. They took 1/2" off, and it took 10 minutes. I have been here twice, trying to support a business in my neighborhood. I received a fairly good haircut from Nini. When I returned, Nini was off so I had Rosa, cut my hair. The cut was blunt, uninspired, dreadful and expensive for the price. I should have gone to Hair Cuttery! the manicure was not much better and didn't last three days. I've finally found the neighborhood hair salon I've been looking for. No pretense, no hard sell of unwanted services. Just a pleasant, happy place where I can get a great hair cut for $55. Nini is always on time and does a consistently terrific job. They offer pedicures and manicures as well but I haven't tried them yet. The only downside is that parking is tight, but if you get a meter the boss will go out and put quarters in for you. Honest, it's that kind of place. read more

This place bills itself as a "family" haircut place. They have some work to do. We have been here before, in fall 2016, and got a decent haircut for my 3 year old son. He cried a little at the beginning, but then calmed down and the haircut was fine. This past weekend (3/4/17) however, we did not have such a pleasant experience. My son again got in the chair and cried, but while the stylist was willing to calm him down, and even start with clippers, the lady at the front desk (her boss) stepped in and refused to allow her stylist to continue. My son actually did begin to calm down, but the lady informed us now that she could not take him because she had "another appointment" (after just 10 minutes). Any hair salon that bills itself as a family place must have the technique and patience to deal with children and get them accustomed to sitting in the chair. Many other hair salons in the area are great at this. Sadly, Salon Familia has considerable work to do before they can be counted among those. read more

I have tried two of the stylists (Rosa and Kim) and have to say that I will unlikely go back for a haircut or styling again. I have long hair and even if I go in for a trim, they always end up cutting my hair way shorter than what I had suggested and give me a hairstyle from the 1980s. So the last time I was there, I decided to bring a picture of Tina Fey's layered cut, since my hair and skin tone is similar to hers. The end result did not look like the picture at all and when I told the stylist, she just tried to fix it by cutting my hair that had already been blow dried. I used to bring my daughter in but after my past experiences, I will take her to the hairdresser that fixed the Salon Familia's interpretation of Tina Fey's cut. I think it is sad because the place has a lot of potential and it is in a neighborhood with many women who would love to have a good salon nearby. Salon Familia is a wonderful place! It recently changed ownership and I was thrilled to hear that Kim, the awesome stylist we've been seeing for years, is now one of the owners. The salon has undergone a complete facelift and is gorgeous. We first started going there at the suggestion of several friends who raved about how excellent the stylists are with children. My friends did not steer me wrong. My son loved his first professional haircut at Salon Familia and we've been going ever since. And I now get my hair cut there too. I can always find parking on the block and their prices are reasonable. Our stylist is always on time. And we can usually book an appointment within a few days of calling - unlike other places where you have to plan weeks in advance. You won't be sorry if you give Salon Familia a try! read more

I took my 15 year old daughter here for a half inch trim. No layers. We were in the salon for 17 minutes. $70. That is insane. Worse yet, the trim is uneven. I never write negative reviews but this was just too awful to disregard. The haircut I received was so bad it compares to the time I did one myself when I was 4. Clippers straight up the side of my head, no blending, no fading, didn't square it up, just a solid buzz cut stopping just below the crown. This was followed by sloppy scissor cuts on top leaving my bangs different lengths and now impossible to comb neatly. A sub-five minute haircut with no mirror to view the back should be a strong indicator that professionalism is not valued here. read more
