I rarely write reviews (this is maybe my second) but I felt I had to write one about Salon J because service like this deserves recognition. First of all and most importantly, they know how to cut hair. You will leave feeling beautiful, shiny and just incredible. Second of all, what makes Salon J so great is that the atmosphere and the attention they give their customers. It's exceptional. The hairdressers are very friendly in the most genuine of ways. Going to Salon J has come to feel like a little vacation, where you meet up with some old friends, and if you fall asleep in the chair in front of your friends because you're senile and lack basic social skills, they don't give you shit for it. How nice is that? SO NICE. Jane in particular is the most wonderful, hilarious and best hairdresser to have graced the streets of New Haven. Jane, you are a goddess among goddesses. Example of Jane's grace: After two years of frequenting Salon J I told Jane I was thinking of getting bangs (hubris: I have a tiny forehead). Jane kindly but firmly told me she would never partake in my own demise and instead she would give me layers that would frame my face. Thank you, Jane. You have saved me from myself. STUDENTS: the prices are reasonable. Go. You will feel stunning and shiny and beautiful. Freshmen, you will have four years reliable, wonderful years of Salon J and having just graduated I envy you. Jane is basically a Russian Goddess. I have been a loyal customer of Salon J since their opening on York Street. I have yet to find a salon with such a positive morale, supportive management, and dedicated staff. When it comes to my hair, I'm very particular. Jane has MASTERED the men's haircut. She is always keeping up with current trends and fashion. Sometimes I sit in the chair after giving her a big hug and say, "make me look like a celebrity". It takes talent to cut hair, but it takes a lot more to be a personal hair STYLIST. Jane has become a great and loyal friend and will go out of her way to make her clients feel more confident in their appearance. I would STRONGLY recommend Jane. Everyone loves her. She's always happy and will make you look like a model. I also love the salon manager, Jen. She's awesome too! Dye jobs here are beyond awful. The stylist had no idea what she was doing. I asked for a pastel pink hair job and she put HOT PINK hair dye in my hair. She also did not evenly bleach my hair so the color faded out a peachy orange, light pink, and purple. Honestly, I could have personally dyed my hair better than a PROFESSIONAL. I showed her picture after picture of what I wanted but its like she heard the word pink and went crazy. Also, I showed her a picture of my hair before I showed up so she could tell how much it would cost and how long it would take. It ended up being double the cost she gave me and took triple the amount of time it would take. By the end the entire salon was running around trying to make it go quicker and it was a horrible experience in general. My girl was Jane and I would never go here again. read more

There is nothing better than the feeling you get when you walk out of a salon looking gorgeous! Every time I leave Salon J, that's exactly how I feel. Jenn is the person that cuts my hair. She and I discuss options for both the cut and the color highlights before we do anything. She always shows me the newest and hottest trends -- I even got a feather extension!! I am still amazed when I look in the mirror at the finished product. The finished product is always perfect. The salon staff is always friendly and very welcoming of my two not-so-quiet children. My 11 year old daughter has also gotten her hair cut at this salon -- her stylist was Sandy -- and she was also thrilled with the results. I would highly recommend this salon -- especially those of you that like to play with different colors and styles!!! read more

I haven't successfully "walked in" to a haircut but yesterday both my boyfriend and I did -- they had room right at the end of the day. The salon is a nice space, with very friendly staff, and most importantly, stylists that listen to what you want! Jane cut my hair, but spent quite a bit of time asking how I normally wear it, whether I blow dry it, what I wanted, etc. She wasn't the only one -- I heard my boyfriend's stylist (Stephanie) asking for clarification on what he wanted, and another guy getting his hair cut was having the same conversation. That's the #1 thing I look for in a stylist or a salon, so I was very impressed & pleased. $60 for a hair cut is comparable to other salons in New Haven... still a lot of money, but worth it if you can swing it! read more

I've loved Salon J since I first walked into their old location on the corner of York and b'way. Their new location is even better and is lit beautifully with some nice chandeliers. The staff is convivial, and Jen the owner is a friendly, smart person who has assembled a great staff. That being said, I would wholly recommend you seek the styling services of Jane Minaeva while you are there. Call for an appt. and ask for her by name. Not only is she a remarkable hairstylist, but she's not afraid to tell you what works and doesn't work for your face and head shape. She is truly a sculptor with scissors. Her men's cuts are always right on point and I love the looks she's given to the ladies I know lucky enough to heed my advice! read more

This. Place. Is. AMAZING. Jane is incredible!! I called today to make an appointment for the week (secretly hoping I would be able to cut my hair today impulsively) and the stylist I wanted was available today. I went in, showed her pictures of what I wanted, I was a little apprehensive because I had done the same thing at a different salon in January and was unsatisfied, and she knew EXACTLY how to style it. I had Jane and she was so trustworthy, knowledgeable, and made me feel like I would walk out of there with exactly what I wanted. And I did! She even taught me a few things on how to style it. I'm usually more of a Yelp freeloader, reading reviews and not posting them; but this place deserved some stars! Excellent cuts! I moved to New Haven about 3 years ago, and recall reading Yelp reviews to find this place. Well, the high ratings were correct, and I have never had to look anywhere else during my time here. Everyone is very friendly, prices are affordable, and they really know how to cut hair (even if yours is like mine, and grows a bit wild). I usually had my hair cut by Jane, who is excellent and always very friendly. She always ended by saying "That looks good," and she was always right, it did. Just get your hurrs cut here, it's easy and you'll look good. read more

Jane at Salon J has been cutting my hair for three years now. The first two years I was in grad school in New Haven, but for the last year I've travelled all the way from NYC every five weeks just for Jane every because she's so good. I have really thick hair and Jane does a great job of thinning it while maintaining enough body that it keeps its shape when combed. No one else has been able to master it like her. There's always a congenial environment in Salon J, and I like all the windows and light in their new space near the corner of York and Chapel in New Haven. There are great restaurants and theaters nearby which is nice as well. read more

I've been going to Salon J since they opened in March. Even though there is only street parking, I have never had a problem getting a space. The prices are reasonable and service is friendly. Jen colors and cuts my hair and has been doing so for a long time - probably almost 10 years - and I would go no where else. My color and cut are always perfect. So happy she has her own place now. :) She has also cut my VERY picky son's hair since he was a little boy. He won't let anyone else cut his hair! He always knows exactly what he wants but never knows how to communicate it, but somehow it always comes out just right. read more

I started going to Salon J two years ago. As soon as I walked in I felt like a party of the family! Everyone there is so friendly and welcoming. They are very accommodating when it comes to last minute appointments and squeezing in my son and/or daughter. Jane has been cutting my hair and I ALWAYS get compliments on my hair style (from friends and strangers alike). I'm just so happy to have someone who knows what looks good on me. Jane and Jen together KILL IT when it comes to color. Even the hair washing is enjoyable. I live three towns away from New Haven but it's worth the drive. read more

By far the best place to get a men's haircut in New Haven. The only other places under $20 are the various barbershops around town, but you don't get anything near as great as from the stylists here. The haircuts are easily comparable, if not better, than the ones you'll get by spending $30-40 at the other salons around town. I've had the most experience with Marisa and Jane, but most of the stylists I've had cut my hair (I'm usually too lazy to schedule in advance--they're very accommodating of walk-ins) have been amazing. I've been going to Jane at Salon J for cut and color for two years- she's the best! I'm usually pretty nervous about trying new color for my hair, but Jane has a great eye for what will look good and always understands what I'll like (even when I'm not great at explaining it). At this point, I just completely trust whatever color treatment she recommends, and it always looks good. Same with haircuts- she's great at translating whatever picture I've shown her into something that will actually look good with my hair. Definitely can't recommend her highly enough! read more

Jane consistently gives a great haircut, and listens to what I ask for. She takes great pride in her craft and haircuts grow out beautifully! She recently gave my hair a glaze to brighten up my color. I really wanted a natural look and I was thrilled with the results. Not only is her work excellent, her personality is always cheerful and friendly. Coming to get my haircut is a relaxing experience after a stressful day! I am in love with this salon. My hairdresser is Samy! I have had terrible luck finding someone that can make a balayage ombré look from a magazine. She nailed it!!! Not only is she great with her colors but styling my hair has been out of this world. I receive compliments constantly on how young I look because of my hair!
