The Best Haircut Ever! So, it's hard to put this down in print but - I'm losing my hair. I've tried a bunch of over the counter products and most of them do little to improve the situation. The one thing that does help is a good haircut. Something to help hide the issue!! I can't just go to any old barber for a buzz cut now. I need a clever, talented stylist to work their magic. Sadly I'm so often disappointed. Not this time. I booked an appointment with Jane at Salon J this past weekend. She's a bubbly, fun Russian lady who - when not cutting hair - likes to go hiking and white water rafting in Utah! I told her I'd been looking for a stylist to save me from crisis and she dove in. She is the miracle worker I've always wanted in my hair life. She really gave me the best cut ever. Sadly I'm only in New Haven for another month. But I'm not going too far, New York City, and she's so good I may just have to travel the two hours back to CT for my haircuts from now on... Thanks Jane and Salon J. read more

Came in to get a wash and blow dry for my bday and Erin did an awesome job. Super friendly and thorough and gave me options for how I wanted it to look. She even did a little curling at the end to make it wavy. This was my first blowout and now that I know my hair can look so good for just 35 bucks, I'll definitely be back! read more

I came to Salon J for my first time last year, because I was long overdue for a haircut and I didn't have enough time to go home to my usual place outside of NYC. I am more used to a Japanese salon - their precision is unmatched and every detail is cared for, down to the amazing hair wash. I cannot remember the name of my stylist then, but she was relatively sloppy with the wash, and I left the salon only to realize one side of my hair was slightly longer than the other. Today I went back to Salon J, because I was stuck in the same situation as I was last year, and I wanted to give them another chance because my friend went to Salon J for the three years she was in New Haven. This time, I requested Jane because of all of the fantastic reviews she has on Yelp. She was so friendly, didn't talk too much for me, and did exactly what I asked for. The cut didn't take too long, and it is the same length on both sides! (My hair is very straight, so bad haircuts are really obvious). She even took a few minutes to style it similarly to what I said I like, and she also let me know that if I decide my bangs need to be shorter in a few days, I could drop by any time and get them trimmed shorter, because it is more disastrous to cut them too much rather than too little. I am so glad I decided to give them another try! I usually am very difficult to please, especially when it comes to my haircuts, and I rarely leave feeling good about how it looks. Today is an exception. I don't think I'll be too insistent on going back to my regular salon near home from now on. And who can say no to a Yale student discount?! read more

I am VERY picky about my hairstylist, so when my former hairstylist went to nursing school I tired many different places/sytlists (incl. Bumble and Bumlbe, NYC) until I found Jane at Salon J. She is amazing! She has incredible skill and creative talent as well as a tremendous heart. I've had many people ask me where I get my haircut and many many friends and strangers comment on how gorgeous my hair and the back of my haircut is! Every week someone asks me if I have gotten my haircut, because her cuts are beautiful right away and even as they grow out! It is also super low maintanence, so I really don't need to go back very often... but I do... in part because Jane is also such a wonderful person. One day I went for a haircut and was having such a bad day I was near tears... When I left the salon I was smiling and full of life again. She listens and is respectful, not probing, but kind and uplifting. I work as a chaplain at a hospital. One of my patients was asking and asking for a haircut. She took time out of her day to register at the hospital and volunteered to cut this person's hair. She gave my son his first haircut at 12 months and he loved it! I got a great hair cut for a great price. Jane did a fabulous job. She was recommended by my colleague and from the moment we walked in the door, I felt all the stylists' warm welcome. While we were there, the rain began to pour. When Jane learned that we didn't bring unbrellas, she offered to walk us out the back door which was closer to the car. She waited with my fiance whlle I got the car and they chatted the whole time I was gone. She went above and beyond to care for us. I can't wait to go back. read more

I should start by saying that I got a great haircut here. I was looking for a new place after my previous barber moved. Bella did a great job on my hair, cut it exactly as I wanted it, and was friendly and helpful with suggestions. She really took the time to get things right. What irritated me a little bit, though, was their pricing. Online, their posted price for a men's cut is $22-$25. They also advertise a 10% student discount. I think my haircut's pretty simple -- just machine cut on the sides and trimmed a bit on top -- so I was expecting to pay about $20 after the discount, and before tip. Even though I mentioned the discount and showed my ID, I was handed a credit card slip for a flat $25, before tip, by the woman at the desk. I know it's not *that* much more, but something about it just felt dishonest to me; honor your posted prices and advertised discounts. read more

I took a short trip to New Haven to see my family and really needed a haricut, so my friend recommended Salon J and I got an affordable (which is refreshing coming from someone who lives in NY and pays ALOT for this service) great haircut without an appointment! My hairdressers name was Jenn and she was not only good at her job, but very sweet. I have been going to this salon since 2011 and specifically Jane. Great salon, great service & fantastic haircuts.

I booked an appointment about 3 months ago for a french twist. Explained I would arrive with hair in hot rollers using hot set due to wedding time constraints. Asked what this would cost and told $65 and it would be with Jen, the owner. I called to confirmed these details a week before the wedding and was told the same information by the receptionist. Salon J called and left appointment confirmation voicemail the day before. When I arrived I was surprise at how cramped the salon was...very small. While I waited, I knew something was up. I ended up with Bella...not Jen...who was very nice. I asked for a romantic front and side sweep and said bigger is better. She does not know what a french twist is nor a romantic sweep. I have thick hair with great body that's easy to work with. When she was done I looked like I had a donut on the back of my head and there was no height...my hair was really flat all around except for the donut. Absolutely Awful! When readying to pay $65 I was told it was $85. Rightfully, I left no tip. I was ready to tip very generously and I have a great hair stylist in the area that I live that I've been with for 9 years. Salon's need to have people who know how to style and do simple french twists...a basic 101 skill. I would not recommend Salon J to anyone. read more

The stylist/s at this salon seem to only be able to know how to do this one cut, with the sides outrageously short, even when told otherwise and after being shown a picture displaying a completely different hairstyle. Expect to get their classic mens' cut (which, as you may expect, does not look good on every single person). read more

I went to Salon J for the first time today and had a great experience! I made an appointment, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference for the length of my stay, but I got in the chair right away and was out the door in under an hour! My stylist gave me exactly the cut that I was asking for, was friendly, and really knew what she was doing. I have received so many compliments on my hair. The price was reasonable, especially for the amount of time I was there and the quality of the haircut I received. I will definitely be back and would recommend to anyone in the area! read more

I honestly got a botched haircut at Salon J. I have never written a Yelp review before this. I mean tetris-style chunks. My stylist was unengaged and lazy, beginning the cut by parting my hair on a lopsided angle rather than in the centre and giving me the most uneven and careless cut I have ever had. (I will not mention her name in this review because I believe it is unnecessary to publicly shame somebody. Her name has not been mentioned in any of the other reviews here. I am calling the salon manager to complain discretely with the stylist's name.) The stylist seemed more engaged in talking than in focusing on the hair she was actually cutting. She ignored my instructions for my curly hair, giving me exactly what I did not want - cutting it too short around the face where it bounces up like puppydog ears. I drove home somewhat shocked and had to come back immediately when it had dried more and I realized that the hair was not only cut contrary to my desires, but incredibly uneven and lopsided. One side of my hair was visibly longer than the other by about two inches and the back was in a rough diagonal slant. I was greeted somewhat lazily and brought to the same stylist to correct my hair, which I believe was poor professionalism on the part of the salon. She obviously didn't know what she was doing. There are still visible choppy large chunks of distinct segments of hair. I paid in full for a hack job. I am extremely upset and will have to get a corrective cut elsewhere, which is expensive and frustrating. There are few things worse than a bad haircut. read more

She will listen to all your fears and desires and then somehow give you precisely the haircut you wanted. She is also a phenomenal eyebrow waxer. Great for color. But not always in line with what I ask for. The stylists have formidable skills though, so I wouldn't fault them for that.

Got a haircut and eyebrow wax there back in August for a wedding, and was very happy with the results. Fun, friendly staff listened to what I asked for. My haircut was flattering, and for a hair salon I was pleasantly surprised by the eyebrows; I'm pretty picky with those, but they did a good job. although the staff were all very nice and accommodating and the space is cute, for the money i paid (over $200), i was not satisfied with how my hair dye came out. after getting it dyed the first time almost all of it washed out upon the first wash, and i went back to have it redone. They were very understanding and did the second color for free, but again, it washed out almost completely after about the third week, and i followed specific directions with washing and products. I do not think i would go back there for another color, but maybe for a haircut. read more

First few visits for cut and color with were great, and I'm a polite, appreciative, 20% tipper so I didn't expect that to change. On the last visit for root touch-up plus bang trim, I was made to wait five minutes past my appointment time (absolutely no big deal)....but then was pushed out the door with wet hair on a cold winter day to boot (well, told to leave the chair and go blow dry my hair myself at the station near the door) so that her next client (a guy who didn't exactly look like he was there for a long, expensive job) didn't have to wait the literal 5 minutes (actually less) it would have taken to for her do this for me (I have quite short, thin hair) in the chair so we could both check her work. I would have been happy to pay for this service as an add-on blow out and expected as much (this has been my experience at past salons locally and in NYC), *especially* as this meant my color matching wasn't checked at all when dry (which she usually makes a show of doing) and the bangs were scissored off wet when in the past she's said it's best to look at the cut dry first or at least after to make sure they're cut to where they're supposed to be when dry. (At least I wasn't charged for that--again, I was expecting to do so and would have been happy to do so if it had been done right.) I didn't even get the option. I was too stunned (and too foggy from a very bad week, see below) to push back harder at being hustled out. (When I literally didn't understand she was asking me to get out of the chair and go even though I had wet hair and nothing had been checked she just told me with a big fake smile, "I have to stop now, my other customer just came in.") Please note that I have spent hundreds of dollars at this salon, with this stylist, this year alone. This appointment, as well as all previous ones, was made the week before when she was still open several slots that day: I didn't expect to be squeezed in or accommodated at the last minute. An incredibly crappy experience at a salon (for $60 plus tip) on a long, crappy workday before a holiday after a death in the family. What a mistake. I'm still trying to rub off some of the color that got splattered under my eye and cheek that I had to rub away myself after I was left in the chair while the dye set with not even the usual "can I get you a coffee or magazine" during the 30+ minutes I waited and she socialized with the other stylists (I had left with dark stains on my forehead that lasted days afterwards the time before, and maybe I started looking like a pushover when I didn't complain.) Pretty much the opposite of how you want to leave feeling in that price range--or the kind of service you'd expect anyplace but a bad Supercuts. Won't be going back. I'm happy to go back to paying higher prices elsewhere for professionalism and kindness (and less basic cuts, frankly). Just threw a hat on my head before I completely dried my hair myself because I was very eager to get away from what was supposed to have been a self-care pick-me-up (that I've always been happy to pay and tip generously for). read more
