Today I was a last minute call in client. The salon I was going to was closed today. As a last minute appointment I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I was happily surprised with a warm greeting from Katie who went and let Garrett know I was there. She also asked if I needed a water or anything. The salon is very clean, bright and cheerful with that touch of elegance that a chaise, chandelier and classic black and white decor does. Garrett came and introduced himself and we talked about what I would like to do with my hair. It was a thorough opening consultation. We went to the wash area (which I generally do not get my hair washed at a salon) and that was just as clean and bright. It faces the front of the shop and you aren't blocked by a wall in a dark area. Very communal in layout. So, back to the chair. Garrett is a wonderful artist. I gave him a vague idea sort of and referenced a person who's hair I admire. He went over it with me again to be sure of basics and then went with it. He made some tweaks to it to really fit what I was looking for. He kept me well me informed and asked questions when necessary. He is a talented linguist and listener and really makes sure you are the focus and priority. Once done with the cut I allowed him to blow dry and style it with product. (Again this something that I normally do not allow for.) He absolutely had my full trust in his abilities. I did purchase the product he used to style my hair as he really explained what it was for and how it works. It turned out to be what I was recently looking for but was not aware it existed. At the counter to pay the bill the receptionist (I'm sorry sweetie but your name escapes me at the moment) was very nice and personable and funny. She helped with setting up my next appointment with ease. So in a nutshell: Very friendly and comfortable atmosphere with a nice no judgement attitude. All staff are warm and smileing and friendly. Garrett is a hair artist who knows what he is doing and how to understand his clients wishes no matter how wonky they are explained to him. Like I said, I have an appointment with Garrett for next time so obviously I am going back. read more

This is my second time going to La Mode for hair care & I truly can't say enough great things about this place! I have gone to Garrett both times and I seriously recommend getting an appointment with him. The first time I went in, was to get rid of an awful highlight situation & he took such good care of my hair! I left the salon with soft & healthy hair. This last time, I went in for a simple haircut, but he still took his time & perfected the cut. I swear by him! I have gone to many stylists, but none have taken care of my hair the way he does! I was a little nervous to go in due to the pandemic, but I felt comfortable. They spaced out their chairs & everyone had masks on. This review is way overdue, we came here a few months ago to get my daughter a haircut. We haven't had much good experience with hair stylists so I didn't have high expectations but I have to say Garrett was amazing! My daughter had medium length hair and wanted to get a pixie/bob type cut. She has a lot of hair so I was a bit worried how it will turn out but Garrett really took his time to make sure my daughter was ok with the style and length. So many stylists end up cutting way too much in length but Garrett was really careful to make sure it was the right length and the style that looked good on her. He also styled it at the end and put some really cute curls which she loved. With other stylists we've often noticed flaws and unevenness days after the haircut, but to our amazement, my daughter's hair looked really good days, weeks and even months after! Her hair grows really fast but she still gets compliments on her hair to this day! We will definitely be back to see Garrett and will be referring our friends and family too. When I called to schedule my appt, I asked for someone with a lot of experience working with blonde hair & bleach. I explained that my hair was quite damaged and I had a lot of so I needed someone experienced with this. I was told that I could see Lorena. I assumed I'd get what I asked for. Instead, Lorena is "new to the industry" as I now see on their website, which I should have checked 1st. When I arrived, I was greeted pleasantly. The location is clean. It's kind of plain inside, black & white, but with a few touches to give the feel of a more luxurious space, like a chandelier, etc. It's new, so everything looks new. They give clients a smock to protect their clothes; then they cover it with a cape. I explained what was going on with my hair, what I wanted (a full bleach weave with a little bit of the natural left so to blend the regrowth better & a trim with some shaping). Then the owner came and we discussed it again. I thought it was strange & it reminded me of how the instructors see you at a cosmetology school... probably should have been my 1st clue, but I knew that the owner, Rick, is considered the "creative director for hair", so maybe he does that for everyone? I didn't notice it with anyone else, though. Lorena started foiling the back of my hair at 2:05. 1 hour later, she finished the back & went for more bleach. After 20 min of more foiling, she checked the foils in back. I was feeling a little stressed because it had been almost 90 minutes with bleach on those 1st foils & I said, "I'm sure it's blonde, let's just get the rest finished". She said they use a lower chemical level on the 1st half of the head so it matches with the 2nd half. I said I understood, but was concerned because 90 minutes was too long & I was freaking out. She asked if I wanted her to remove the foils. I really panicked because she was asking ME after she just said it was fine. I said no, but could she speed it up and finish the other side. (NOTE: 1 thing she did which made me insane while I sat there, but now that it's over makes me laugh, is every foil had to be perfectly folded, up, then using her comb, a little 1/2" fold up, then using her comb, each side to make a perfect smooth little rectangle. Took FOREVER between that and the tiny brush strokes of bleach!) After I asked her to speed it up, I know she was panicking & I felt bad for her. This was clearly a task not in her comfort zone & my being upset didn't help. She decided to take out the foils in the back & I asked how she'd do that; she said she'd pull the bleach with the foils & she wiped each piece with a towel. Now 1/2 my hair had the stronger bleach on it while she did that. Finally she finished & went back to foiling. She finished at 4:18. The final side had to process so she put heat on it. I felt better knowing it would only be a few more minutes until at least I'd get it washed out and at least the hair wash would be relaxing. Not so. Lorena doesn't know how to wash hair. I was frustrated that she only rubbed the shampoo on the top, outside of the hair without using her fingers to get it down to the scalp. She used toner & rinsed it, also without using her fingers, which again had me worried as violet toner will make blonde hair muddy if not rinsed, so I reached back in started rubbing in what I thought was shampoo & she said was conditioner. She wasn't washing the toner with shampoo until I asked her to. She then shampooed and rinsed, but no conditioner AFTER the shampoo! It was awful & I was almost in tears. When she was done & said we could go back to the station, I got my stuff & went to the counter to ask Rick what my cost was because I had to leave. I asked him to throw away my customer card as I didn't want to be called. He asked what happened, so I explained & said I was really upset & wanted to go home & wash my hair. He said there would be no charge & asked me to talk to him outside. I did & went through the whole thing again. He said he wanted to fix the problem, but I said I wanted to leave; I thanked him for not charging me but I did not want to return. That night I received a call from the 2nd owner, Linda. 1st she asked what happened & then tried explaining her view until I asked if she called to argue with me. She said no, she wanted to see if there was anything she could do to fix the problem. I said there wasn't but she offered to do my hair herself. I thanked her but said I wasn't comfortable returning & I didn't have time either. She said that she would do whatever was necessary to fix my hair herself & would come in on her day off if I needed... as long as I gave her 2 weeks' notice-she's fully booked. I thanked her & declined. I hold the salon responsible for not training their staff. As in any job, Lorena should start with easy tasks, with supervision, & she should be taught to wash hair. She seems nice & I wish her luck, but can't recommend her until she gets more training. Can't comment on pricing read more

I would normally never write a negative review toward a business, but I recently got my hair done here by Laura and it was a mess! She performed a Brazilian Blowout treatment on me but did not finish it. She didn't rinse out the solution or apply the masque ( two very important parts; if you want it to last more than one hair wash) I questioned her about this and she told me that I would need to pay more money to get a complete Brazilian Blowout... I had to go to a different salon in order to get this fixed because she didn't have all of the products to complete the treatment. read more

I loved the salon, it was extremely busy with men & women clients, and my haircut was the best haircut I've had in years! Travis is a great stylist and really takes the time to learn about your hair and styling rituals to create a manageable cut. The products they use are local/vegan or high quality (e.g. Bumble & Bumble), the chairs & wash bowls are very comfortable, and the prices are perfect. I would go back here in a heartbeat, and I highly recommend this salon to anyone willing to make the drive from San Diego. This is the BEST SALON!! I am so impressed! I've been driving to the OC to get my hair done, but with three small kids thats not happing anymore. I've been to a few salons in and around the area and have not been satisfied with any of them. I have to say I'm very particular and a bit of a "hair snob." I was starting to worry that I wan't going to find anyone as good as my gal in the OC, but I was so wrong. I called and made an appointment to see Rick and they fit me in for that Saturday. I got a base color, highlights and cut. He really took his time and did an outstanding job. Rick is a perfectionist, a real artist. I was hesitant at first of the price, but after my hair appointment with Katie, she gave me EXACTLY what I wanted and more. This place really EXCEEDED my expectations and FEAR of going to a new salon - which is a big deal because it's been so hard to find someone to get my hair the way I want. From making the appointment to getting to the front desk and meeting my hairstylist, everyone was very WELCOMING, FRIENDLY, and POLITE. Katie was very knowledgable, giving me suggestions/tips as to how she was going to cut my hair as well as making sure I understood the process. I have often had designers cut my hair to their preference only to end up with tears in my eyes...(ladies we all have had the awful haircut experience). I been coming to La Mode Salon for over a year and I couldn't be any happier. Their staff and service is impeccable and very professional. I was seeing a previous stylist at the salon but she was no longer working there. I made my first appointment with Tryna for a root touch up and she gave me a trim. I needed it badly... She did an awesome job and styled my hair beautifully. I followed up with Tryna for another appointment with her 2 weeks later for Balayage. I have black hair and a fair complexion. Tryna suggested a color that would be subtle and that would break up the harshness of the black I've had for a very long time. I've always had the traditional highlights with the foils and this freehand style of Balayage is new to me so I didn't know what to expect. The end result was AMAZING!!!!! Tryna is AMAZING!! The color is warm and I look younger (haha.. that is a bonus!!). Tryna put curls in my hair that actually lasted the entire day. This is a great salon and Tryna is a blessing. read more

She was able to accommodate my need for a late evening appointment; 5/6 p.m., offered me a beverage upon arrival, and MOST importantly, did an outstanding job on my hair color and cut. My review is for Laura at La Mode Salon. I've been going to her for years. She does a fantastic job! Not to mention she's always super friendly and welcoming. I like how she takes the time to talk in detail about what your hair expectations are before she gets started. She takes the time to get to know her clients to better meet their hair needs. I like how she asks how you wear your hair most, so that she can take that into consideration for your cut and style. She's cut both of my kids' hair (3 and 9) as well as my husband's, so that shows how versitile she is. And she really is accommading in scheduling. I have processed hair (chemically straightening and highlighted), and I usually know what I want (and don't want) when I go in for a cut. Laura is always VERY accommodating with my opinions. And she always give me her opinion (which I trust comletely) and points out things that I may need or not need (I do not always know what's best for my hair!). :) And since I live an hour away, there have been MANY times where I get a wild hair and buy a Groupon for another salon that's closer to my house, only to have to go back to Laura to Fix it! This has happened a few times! At a Groupon salon, I asked for layers, only to have my hair unevenly texturized!! I was so upset, Laura fit me in that same day to fix it -and she did it without me having to lose all my length (something I have nightmares about). At another salon (yes, using Groupon), I asked for highlights without bleach, and walked out with 2 bleached strips right next to my face!! Laura once again came to the rescue and conditioned and colored (did her magic) so I walked out of there looking like I had naturally highlighted hair (no artificial white strips anymore!). And as an added bonus, she's always taking classes and learning new techniques to keep up with the latest trends. My hair is more traditional, but cutting chemically straightened hair like mine can be a real challenge for layering, since the ends can't be blunt cut like normal hair. I also like the idea of her knowing the trends in case I want to try something new. Whether it's fixing someone else's work, doing color/highlights, cut, style, kids, men, curly or straight, I highly recommend Laura! And yes, I'll drive the hour from San Diego to see her!! read more
