    failed attempt at cooking rice

Unfortunate miss. First time trying this place, went for lunch, grabbed about 5 dishes off their lunch menu. Price was ok, maybe a little high in general for what you get. Also their dine in sit down menu looks extra pricey. Anyways parts of the food tasted weird. Particularly the rice. How does a Japanese restaurant get rice wrong? It tasted almst like they used soapy water to cook it. It was inedible. Something was also off with the tomato and beef in other dishes. The green beans were the mostly normal tasting part of the meal.

Small restaurant, staff very friendly and attentive, stopped in for lunch, had the Katsu Curry, price with tax and tip was $25.00, portion size was good. Food came quickly, curry had good flavor, not very spicy. Cutlet was cook well and had a nice light breading. Parking may be a bit tight but there is usually some on the street if the lot is full. Will go back for something else from the menu.

Nice little Japanese restaurant that is tucked in between a few businesses. You definitely wouldn't think a restaurant as nice as this one would be located where its at. PARKING can be a little tricky, but you can find some additional parking along the street side. SERVICE was great. They were friendly and attentive. They provided great recommendations. FOOD was on point. Everything tasted great! We ordered quite a few tasty items on the menu. Pictures for reference. Drinks were great. I had the Lucky Dog Ale and ordered a bottle of sake. Looking forward to another trip here.

We'd heard good buzz about this place, hidden in a small strip mall, and had to try it. We opted for a reservation at 5:30 and glad we did, as the place got packed after we arrived. The inviting funky atmosphere, quality menu, and seating in plush, red cushioned chairs made for a nice experience. I loved the asparagus appetizer, crunchy and drenched in yakitori sauce. The bento box we split was great-- savory crab sushi, spicy salad, tuna/salmon/yellowtail nigiri, and tempura. They have a nice variety of sakis, too. I'm no expert on sushi, but it was evident the chef knows his stuff. We'll be back.

Love this place! We've been here a few times and the food has been consistently fresh and well prepared. It's an easy spot for a casual meal, and the service has always been friendly. Definitely one of those places we keep coming back to. #taxcap98

    SEARED BLACK PEPPER TUNA
    Jawana M.

Overall, I would recommend giving this place to try. The ambience is nice, the staff is friendly, and the food was good. I will say some items are pricier than other places, but still enjoyable. Decided to give this place a try and stumbled upon it right as it opened! The ambience was really nice and the waiter told us the menu was brand new, (less than a week old). Everything looked so good, so we didn't hesitate on tasting a variety of items. Appetizer: GARLIC SPICY EDAMAMME $8 This was my least favorite item. The edamame was steamed way too long. As a result it was super soft, stringy, and mushy. The spicy garlic sauce was just coated on the top, but not really cooked into the appetizer. Specialty Cut Roll: EL SEGUNDO $23 (ingredients are... SPICY TUNA - AVOCADO - CUCUMBER - TOPPED WITH TUNA - SASHIMI - JALAPENO DRESSING CILANTRO) This was soooo tasty and flavorful. It had a surprisingly zesty taste to it. I don't know if I'm doing justice to this roll, but it was good! Hand Rolls (choose 3 for $35) - BLUE CRAB (with CUCUMBER - AVOCADO) This was OK. It tasted like crabcake mix (pre patty fried) in a hand roll. A bit dry, but real crab was a plus. - YELLOWTAIL (with AVOCADO - IKURA) This was a little dry as well. Paired well with the soy sauce, but otherwise it was just OK. - TORO (with GREEN ONION) My least favorite of the three. It looked like a very rich and flavorful cut of fish. However, in my opinion, it was quite bland and tasteless. Sashimi Carpaccio Style: SEARED BLACK PEPPER TUNA $25 (served with SPRING MIX - CRISPY ONION - GREEN ONION - YUZU) YES, YES, AND MORE YES! This was so tasty! The tuna was seared perfectly with a nice delicious coating of black pepper. The onion was less crispy and more on the soft side. But if you ignored that, the remainder of the dish was excellent. This I ordered two of. Drink: Green Tea I love me some tea from a sushi house. In this case, my hot green tea arrived in a mason jar with a teabag?!. Not what I expected when I ordered hot green tea. They did offer to refill my glass (using the same teabag), but the leaves were all used up. A little disappointed on this aspect. Condiments: - Wasabi : they use wasabi paste, but provide the option of real wasabi. If you ask for the paste, be advised it is very light in spice and flavor. The actual wasabi is better, but comes with a five or eight-dollar upcharge. - Ginger : nice and fresh

    Beef Udon
    Ivan Lawrence A.

Food I initially ordered the beef curry rice and was excited for my order, but I was informed only after about 10 minutes that they did not have it in stock, which was a shame and I felt it was bad service to inform me only after having waited so long. I ordered the beef udon instead. The beef udon was actually pretty good. Nice and savory broth with good umami that warms you up. Tender beef and some good udon noodles. Service/Ambiance We came in as a pretty large party of 6, so they told us that they could seat us in one table but we'd have to move tables in about 30 minutes since there was a reservation for that table which was fine I guess. We get to ordering and the server was nice but seemed to be a bit lost in knowledge of the menu when we were putting in our orders and had questions on the menu items. The food took a while to arrive.

I came back under the new ownership and the food is still quite good and appears to have improved since last time. I ordered the 2 yellowtail + blue crab bento combo. The tempura was light crispy and satisfying if very very slightly oily. The salad had an appropriate amount of bright zesty yuzu dressing, which complimented the crisp greens well. The blue crab had a nice unami, creamy avocado, and crackles of flavor from the sesame seeds. The yellowtail was less than really fresh but still had excellent flavor and a thick cut. The soy sauce does overwhelm the sushi since its full sodium so be careful with that. All in all a pretty good meal. Minimal complaints.

sweet and spicy shrimp lunch bowl

I ordered the sweet and sour shrimp lunch bowl to go. The amount of shrimp and the size of shrimp used was really disappointing. They were smaller than the cherry tomatoes, which were another thing I found strange about this dish. The flavor wasn't bad but I think it tasted more like a ceviche for some reason. I may still come back as this isn't what I'd normally order from a place like this. But definitely would not order this again.

My girlfriend and I celebrated her birthday at Saloon Osaka off Imperial Ave and had a good experience. Before dinner, we enjoyed some plane watching at Clutter's Park, which set a relaxed tone for the evening. The food was delicious-- we ordered the gyu-don, unagi avocado bowl, four handrolls (two toro and two salmon), and two pieces of aji nigiri. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor. However, when it got busy, service lagged a bit. One server seemed unfamiliar with the menu, and with only one sushi chef handling all tables, our waits stretched longer than expected. In fact, I waited an extra 10-15 minutes for my aji nigiri, though I ordered it in the middle of the meal.

    Salmon Jalapeño Carpaccio
    Emily L.

This place is the trifecta of good food, service, and atmosphere! It has a small parking lot in a plaza but we were lucky to park in the lot. The salmon carpaccio was amazing! I also enjoyed the shrimp tempura roll. Everything was delicious and I would absolutely eat here again!

Cute little spot felt very cozy. Food and service were amazing. It"s a little pricey.

Great find and even better experience. I picked up some of my favorite people from LAX and they were craving sushi. Thank you Yelp for this hidden find! Beautiful ambiance that sure hits the feeling of being in Japan. Cute menu with great amount of choice at a reasonable price. Keep in mind, you're in El Segundo. Food was delicious and abundant. Well displayed. We probably got the largest cut of teriyaki salmon they had and stayed hot as we finished it slowly. Sushi was fresh. But what really made this a special night was the service. Service will always determine how many stars I give. Roberto was our waiter and he was awesome. Full of class, polite, attentive, and accommodating especially with all the questions a newbie would have. I would highly recommend this fine establishment and would return myself.

This is what $14.00 adagashi appetizer looks like. Going straight to the trash.

The drinks and food as well as the setting of the restaurant gives ultra chill vibes - one of the better izakayas I've been to re drinks and food variety and quality. They have some premium wines here too, including Opus One and Kenzo. What would have made this a top notch experience would be once of those semi-private booths with the lower seating that some places have, but this felt like some places we've been to in Japan as well. The only thing I didn't love was that I spent around $400 here (LOL), but we all had a great time so that was fine. Food-wise, we tried the following - Gobo Chips - a friend recommended these to us. He said eating these when drinking will prevent hangovers, headaches, any negative effects, etc. I thought it was cap, but all that beer and sake, I felt great the rest of the evening and morning despite just a few hours of sleep. Large serving of these chips, nicely seasoned, thin sliced, great texture. Even my daughter enjoyed these. Uni & US Wagyu Beef Sashimi - how decadent! Very flavorful. A bit too much sauce for me, but otherwise good. Salmon Truffle Carpaccio - this was one of my fave small plates. Fresh sashimi with ikura. YUM!! Chicken & Green Onion Skewers - Pretty good chicken. My daughter even ate the onions without realizing. Amazing. Chicken Karaage - the daughter's favorite! Goes very well with the beer too. Assorted Tempura - nice assortment of shrimp and veggies, with the tempura dipping sauce. Ribeye Ponzu Steak - beautifully cooked and flavorful. We started with the above, and the food came at various times, but the waits weren't long so we appreciated that. We were still hungry, so we ordered some more stuff - Premium Sashimi - min of 2 orders so we did that. It was good, but I expected a lot more for premium sashimi. It looked more of a single portion, but beautifully presented. Chazuke - we got some for us all - both salmon and mentaiko. Best dish to end a meal at an izakaya. Warm dashi with the riceball in there, seaweed, topped with either the salmon or mentaiko. Subtle flavors, but really delicious. We then looked at a dessert menu and decided to go elsewhere for some sweets. Would def come back to try their pressed sushi, and if we weren't all picky eaters, we'd try their set meal as well.

The atmosphere is colorful, lively, unstuffy, and private enough to enjoy good convo but not awko quiet. You order everything via an iPad, which is dangerous because when pictures of gyoza are staring you in the face, your impulse control vanishes. We ordered "a little bit of everything," which is code for "the table was structurally compromised by the weight of our dinner." * The Highlights: The pickled cucumbers (crisp enough to hear in the next county), the pork bowl, and sushi that actually tasted like it came from the ocean. Unfortunately, the food told a very different story. We ordered a wide variety of yakitori since the glowing reviews repeatedly highlighted it as the restaurant's specialty. Instead, what arrived was surprisingly inconsistent. Nearly every skewer had a heavily charred exterior that crossed the line from smoky to bitter. Good yakitori should showcase careful grilling that enhances the ingredients, not mask them with burnt flavors. The proteins themselves didn't taste particularly fresh, and the seasoning was all over the place. Some skewers were so lightly seasoned they tasted unfinished, while others were aggressively salty. Consistency is one of the fundamentals of good yakitori and it was noticeably lacking here. Having visited plenty of izakayas and eaten more than my fair share of yakitori, I'm not claiming Michelin-level expectations. I simply know the difference between properly grilled, well-balanced skewers and ones that miss the mark. Based on this visit, the food was below average and failed to live up to the hype. With the volume of positive reviews, I expected a memorable yakitori experience. Instead, I left wondering if I had visited the same restaurant everyone else was raving about.

We walked in buzzing from the games, and the staff matched our energy perfectly. The service here is always attentive and friendly. We kicked off the celebration with a round of their premium chilled sake and an order of their spicy garlic edamame. Do yourself a favor and do not skip the edamame--the hot spice blend is dangerously addictive and pairs perfectly with the sake. But let's talk about the main event. Sugarfish has been my hubby and my Friday lunch date spot for quite a while now. Service is…read moreusually great, especially if you're lucky enough to get Cristiana (I hope I spelled her name right). She's awesome, remembers our orders, and is attentive. I love getting the Trust Me, swapping out the crab hand roll for the scallop, and adding a Hokkaido scallop nigiri--this is the perfect lunch. The fish is fresh, ponzu is the perfect complement for certain cuts of sushi, and the rice is the right temp with just the appropriate amount of tang from the vinegar. Parking is easy in any of the adjacent lots or meters. We usually arrive when they open, and rarely have to wait.

I'm going to do my best to review this place without swearing. I'm not a huge sashimi guy I'm a…read moreroll guy so take that into my review and I'm not a huge lover of fish. Now that we got that out of the way. Shit damn was this place good! We ordered the Don't think just eat trust me. I think it's like 60$ per. Start with cold edamame and I've never had them cold but they were good. Then sliced tuna with some tangy soy sauce that started the meal off with a bang. And I don't mean just any bang like the kind you tell your friends about. Next was a plate with 6 pieces of sashimi and to be honest I know one was salmon which I normally don't like but this was like butter in my mouth. Freaked awesome. The other two also were great. Then a hand rolled crab I think which also hit the spot followed by my sashimi. It was all great except like fish 5 of 6 or 6 of 7 who knows. It looked like mini lobsters on rice. And it wasn't that I didn't like it it was more the texture that I didn't care for. Just too chewy for sushi. There was also some sort of tuna with mint leave under it and some skin on the fish that wasn't my favorite. But over all this place kicks ass. If you live sushi this is a much for sure. Love to go back.
