I'd like to write I loved this place. I just can't seem to. Maybe my expectations were unreasonable going in to the meal. We had five meals between the party. They were all pretty much the same exception a seafood and rice dish. That is not to say we all ordered the same dish, they just looked and tasted that way. The way I see it, there are two types of Mexican food. The first is, simply put, the real deal. By this I mean fresh ingredients, recipes and styles of cooking that have been passed down through the generations, and very little use of cheese-based products. Salsa Latina, on the other hand, reflects a second type of Mexican that most of are familiar with. I'm talking about plates piled high with food, a liberal use of the deep-fryer, and orders that appear within minutes of ordering. Salsa Latina is a totally decent place to grab a plate of standard issue, Americanized Mexican food. The menu is exactly what you'd expect - quesadillas, enchiladas, tacos, and chimichangas. You can order these items, or items like these, in basically any combination you might want. Most of the dishes are served with refried beans and rice, plus they provide chips and salsa for the table throughout your visit. I've had several dishes from Salsa Latina, most recently having the carne asada tacos. There was nothing about the tacos that stood out to me, but they got the job done. Their happy hour is pretty dangerous too, offering $3.00 margaritas until 5pm. I didn't and don't expect to be blown away by my experience at Salsa Latina, or anyplace like it, for that matter. The offerings at this spot are mostly run-of-the-mill, but sometimes that is exactly what you're looking for. Rave reviews meets disappointment on this one! Ordered the Salsa Latina special because it seemed like a sure win -being the signature dish and all. Sadly, there was way too much sauce, over cooked tilapia, cold shrimp and they actually forgot the plantains! Now, who forgets plantanos? When they arrive, after I reminded the friendly staff, they were tough and dry. We probably would have loved it is we were drinkers. on the upside: The staff was very friendly. When this place first open it was amazing. Now the servers are completely rude and disgusting to you especially if they make a mistake on your food and you pointed out they get extremely out of control. Me and my husband just ordered food over the phone he went to pick it up and they made a mistake, he was giving my rice and vice versa all they had to do was fix it instead the young lady (to keep it clean) was so rude and disgusting about the situation and didn't offer to solve our issue at all. The rice is mixed with frozen mixed vegetables and the chile rellenos were made with green bell peppers. We asked for our check and she had us waiting literally 20 minutes while she was flirting and telling jokes with the (2) guys that were sitting behind the bar. She would turn around to stare at the tv and watch music videos on the TV and to sing and dance. Had us waiting for 20 minutes . When we approached her about our check she gave us a nasty attitude. Tried to argue with us when we advised her that she shouldn't talk like that to a customer that's been waiting 20 minutes for their check . I've revised my opinion. Salsa Latina is definitely more Latin American food than pure Mexican. Tjhat means expect plenty of dishes like chicharones (fired pork rinds,) yuca/cassava, tostones, maduros (sweet plaintains,) arepas, and dishes topped with fried eggs. Don't come expecting tex-mex though. Tex-Mex and more traditional Latin American food are worlds apart. And actually, I think at least one of the owners of Salsa Latina is fEcuadoran. I tried the picado paisa, which is basically a sampler dish of sides and apps. It came with chicharones, delicious guacamole, potatoes, roasted yuca with rosemary, Mexican chorizo, plaintains and arepas (which are basically super thick corn mini- tortillas.) The yuca was my favorite. Mexican chorizo is extremely different than its Spanish cousin and while I liked it, it's fattier and a little more gristly than I'd prefer. When it comes to chorizo, I think I'm definitely more a fan of the Spanish style - which is also a little spicier. The arepas were great scoops for the deliciously fresh guac. Very friendly staff and a bright interior decorated with paper lanterns and papel picado make this place seem far more inviting than when I first went soon after they opened. They have a lovely bar and I'm happy to see they now have a liquor license with great prices on margaritas and other drinks. Apparently on weekends in the summer, they may have music and Latin dancing too. I'll definitely be checking that out. read more

Its always nice to have more options for mexican food. This place is a couple doors up from Van's Vietnamese Restaurant. Though the area is a little downtrodden, you can always find a close parking spot on the street, thereby minimizing your chances of getting hit by a stray bullet. The food itself was serviceable, and some aspects of the meal were quite good. I was really happy that they had bottled Mexican Coke. That factor, all by itself, got them an extra star. I think El Mariachi is a little better and Bros Tacos and Mexican Radio are better still. read more

I think that this is the best Mexican / Latin America restaurant in Albany. The service is very courteous, prompt and welcoming. The food is fantastic as it is fresh and seems to be made of good quality ingredients. I appreciated that the menu has some more traditional appearing items on it; one of which I chose tonight, the Sancocho de Gallina. It was very much like something you would be served in someones home - very rustic but ever so flavorful. I also had the fried plantains which I think were also done well. They were sweet and not too greasy. My husband ordered the pork carnitas. The pork was very flavorful and well prepared. After tonight's visit, when I want this style food this is certainly where we will be going. So long are the days of the blase El Loco. read more

5 of us went here for lunch on a weekend, the nachos were fresh and so was the salsa, I don't know if it is all home-made or not, but I'd hope so because it tasted very very fresh. The rest of the food was great also, you get A LOT for the price. But the best part was the waitress and the staff. Smiling, warm, friendly and very attentive. I'd go back just for the customer service. I would've asked her out on a date if I was single ( I know I'll get in trouble for this but whatevs). Last minute take out for dinner and we (I) wanted something healthier than Chinese. We chose Salsa Latina because 1) they deliver, 2) decent rating, 3) I love traditional Mexican and this seemed pretty legit. Ordering online was a pain because the site is glitchy and it took me 6 minutes of trying to order to give up and give them a call. The food came within the 45 minute time frame estimate (at just about 45mins) and was mostly hot (tortillas for fajitas got cold - no big deal!). My fajitas were delicious. Maybe it was because I was so hungry at 9:00 at night, but I downed 2 fajita style tacos in 10 minutes flat! Jeff's chimichanga was soggy because it wasn't separated from the guac, rice, referee beans, etc. He said it tasted good but it was very soggy. So maybe that would be better wrapped on the side. Pico de gallo was tasty! As for the guacamole - it's not true guac to me if it is lacking tomato, onion, and some spice. We haven't found a really good guac place yet in Albany - thankfully we make our own extremely tasty guacamole! I will never understand why restaurants with fabulous pico de gallo don't just add some into the avocado. That said, the chips were fresh and the avocado dip was salted and had some cilantro so it tasted good and was well balanced. I definitely think we will order from Salsa Latina again, but we may try dining in the restaurant instead of takeout. Reasons: 1) margaritas! and 2) avoiding soggy good. read more

Lovely place! The pork is done really well here -- tender, juicy, well-seasoned, and lightly crispy on the outside. The chicken is also tender. Everything else are sides for the meat. Cheap margaritas -- $20 for a pitcher. They have nicer stuff, too, if you're looking for a grown-up drink. The staff are very nice. They looked after me and were charming. read more

This is my go-to place for Mexican main dishes. For tacos, it's El Mariachi but that's another review. The carnitas (gently fried pork) is what I get here. It is the essence of the pig. It's a generous portion of very tender pork, infused with just the right amount of fat with great rice and beans for a side. A big plus here is the salsa and chips. The chips are not salted, a good thing since salsa is pretty high in sodium anyway. The salsa comes in a little jar which you pour into a small bowl. You can then add the hot sauces on the table to jazz it up to your liking. If you over do it, you can just add more salsa. Service has always been good as well as friendly. No negatives at all here so 5 stars it is. read more

Food was outstanding. In particular, the chicken nachos were great. So great. I couldn't stop eating them and came close to licking the plate. Really. Like they had crack in them or something. Burritos and enchiladas were good. I also enjoyed the salsa very much. It didn't have a lot of heat, but had a really good flavor. Portions were big and we ended up taking a bunch home. Service was a little slow - it seemed like they were shortstaffed by a person, as the place was only 1/2 full and it was difficult to get our server's attention. Big disappointment! Was in Albany for the weekend. We ordered "On the border fajitas" and "Mexican stew". Both tasted bland; tasteless! If you've ever been hungry, ordered food, but when it was delivered you could hardly eat it but you had to because you were hungry; had just got into town; tired; its late at night; this is it! Got takeout from this place after my daughter and her husband told me how much they enjoyed it. The best Mexican food I think I ever had and all for a $20 bill. My wife had chicken enchiladas which were three huge ones smothered and salsa and just unbelievably delicious. I think hers was 899. We recently got more take out. my wife got linguine frutos Del Mar which tasted like it was from an Italian restaurant unbelievably good & lasted three meals. This food was soooooooooo good. The presentation was great (see attached picture). This food definitely tasted how it looked. It was very filling. Just writing this makes me want to go back. I had their Brochetas of the sea. It was a little pricy but it's to be expected it was Large shrimp grilled w/sliced chicken breast, onions and bell peppers served with Mexican rice, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, guacamole and cheese. Did I mention I don't eat guacamole!!! Well I ate it in this dish and even ate all of it. Oh and they also deliver within 3 miles of the restaurant. This restaurant was punctual with their delivery however I have some problems with the food. Their Quesadilla was soggy and broke in my hand. Their nachos were soggy and disappointing. A great Mexican restaurant! Pleasant, comfortable & fast table service. I ordered the Bandeja Tipica, ($17.95), which was: Grilled steak, beans, white rice, fried egg, pork rind, chorizo, avocado, fried plantain and small grilled corn cake... Quite interesting and delicious...never have I had such an assortment of different things on my plate and everything was delicious! The grilled steak was extremely tender and the Pork Rind was something I have never had before and I look forward to having it again! For the amount of food provided, the price is reasonable...I couldn't finish everything and brought some home. Parking is on the street and if during parking meter hours, you have to feed the meter. We found this place about 6 months ago by chance when our other dinner plans fell through, and we could not be happier! This place deserves a million stars. Never once have we had a bad experience. The food is out of this world, authentic, and dirt cheap. we've never left with our bill costing more than $30 (that's with 2 bar drinks) and with full bellies. The staff is friendly and accommodating; we don't eat meat and one of the waitresses is also vegetarian and she is very quick to make any of the meals fit our needs. The service is crazy fast and the food is always excellent, no matter the day and time. they have great kids meal deals on certain days of the week as well as an all you can eat buffet.
