Pupusas were awesome, get them! The curdito was crisp and had a good vinegary bite too. I also got the chicken, asada and chorizo plate, the chicken was tender and the asada delicious. Okay so i was a loyal customer for almost a year here but NO more! Customer service? There is none. All the workers here look miserable to be at work and don't even greet you when you walk in, instead they'll give you a stank face & look at you up & down. When the manager is around they act a little better but as soon as he leaves all they do is talk talk talk and don't attend to customers AT ALL!! Will be finding a new Pupusaria where they actually value their customers. Good Salvadorean spot the pupusas are non greasy, good size, very thick and filling. My mom order a sopa de pata I got to try it, it was pretty tasty. The service was fast and friendly and the prices were very affordable. Food was as mediocre as the atmosphere, the only thing I would come back to get is chicken tacos to go and I'm not going anywhere out the way to get them. This place tried to rip me off and charge me about $12 extra for food we never even ordered they didn't try to give me a receipt so I can see what they had charged me for. A manager had to handle the situation and charge me the actual amount and on top of that the lady told me there was free refills on horchata and there wasn't so they charged me for all the "free refills". El Salsabor is what I term "Gente" Food. Home cooking straight up from someone's abuelita if abuelita cooked like a champ. Yummy pupusas with cheese and loroco. I had a Salvadoran delicacy known as "sopa de pata" or cow foot soup. It's a thick slightly spicy and tangy soup made with yep you guessed it, cow;'s feet. Popular in Carib countries and Belize. If you like things like chicken feet dim sum or headcheese you'll probably like this soup. I know it sounds gross, but much to the chagrin of imperialistic landowners from days gone by it's a hearty yummy soup. Not recommended for finicky librarians enjoy eating in hermetically sealed silence as the juke box plays latin pop, salsa, and mexican oompa music, while an hdtv plays the latest in intternational soccer. read more

This is a fantastic restaurant with authentic, delicious food made by extremely friendly people. Came here with some friends because they wanted me to try pupusas, and because we are saddened by the general dearth of good Mexican/Central American/South American food on the West Side. El Salsabor did not disappoint: despite the simplicity of their menu, the food was extremely tasty and I would definitely come here again. I ordered the carne asada and a revuelta pupusa (beans, pork, and cheese). The pupusa came with a pitcher of sweetish sauce (that didn't have much taste, honestly), and a canister of pickled vegetables that were mighty tasty. My carne asada was probably the tastiest I've ever had. It was tender and juicy, and loaded with flavor. It was slightly sweet, and even though it was cooked through (I'm a die hard rare meat fan), it was so moist and tasty. I also tried the loroco and cheese pupusa--which is supposedly very authentic; loroco is a type of flower--which was full of delicious, savory cheese with a hint of herbs. Another big hit at my table was the garlic shrimp: although they were petite, they were cooked perfectly and generously slathered with chopped garlic and butter. The dishes came with sides of rice, salad, and the best refried beans. Ever. Our table also got a dish of corn flour bread things (sorry, not very familiar with the cuisine of El Salvador!). We finished off the meal with the Salvadoran version of empanadas, which were plantains, stuffed with custard and fried, then rolled in sugar. Mmmmm. To top it off, the staff (some of whom I assume were the owners?) were super friendly and accomodating. They kept checking in on us to make sure we were ok, explained items on the menu, and in general were gracious hosts. read more

WOW! This place not only has a great value, but great taste! We ordered the plantains with beans, and sour cream. How delicious! I love this dish, and it's made with excellence here! The pupusas are also to die for! The thing is they only cost like 2 bucks! The pupusas are crispy, and delicious without being to oil ridden. The service staff is friendly, and efficient. How in the hell have I never had a Pupusa before? In fact, this was my first time ever laying a tongue on El Salvadorian food. WTF? Where has this been all my life? My meal started tastily with a tall glass of some of the best Horchata I've ever had. Not too sweet and hints of a unique flavor absent at many Mexican restaurant. This Central American Horchata gave me a hint at the delights to come! Next up was a deliciously sweet corn soup called Atol de Elote. I loved the whole corn kernals floating around. This was almost too sweet, but not for me! I finished my meal off with my very first... *drum roll* PUPUSA. Despite the name, I was pleasantly surprised to find it did not taste like poopoo at all! Quite the contrary! I had the squash and cheese and it was scrumptious, though perhaps a tad on the greesy side. They were very nice when we came in and answered all of my parents questions about what the various pastries that they had in the front were. Just sat down for a late dinner, let's see how it goes... The lady who greeted me at the door was nice and seated me promptly, but I was after the main dinner hour and the place was nearly empty. I was grateful to have a non-chain restaurant open this late, however.   Everything looks good on the menu. Breakfast all day!   I ordered a water, hot chocolate and Sabroseria #2 breakfast special with beans (so liquid they look like Mole', maybe they'll taste like it too), eggs (two, I ordered revueltas (sp?) AKA scrambled), plantains (looking like sausage), beef, salad with lettuce and tomato, avocado, what looks like a block of tofu or cheese, sour cream, lime, and a thin large slice of radish, plus 2 pupusas on the side.   Service took about 15 minutes and was worth the wait. The hot chocolate came out piping/scalding hot and has all the complex flavor notes I've come to appreciate in Latin American hot chocolate. The avocado is ripe and like a good avocado. The eggs were small, but amazing. Some nice spices in there, not hot but tasteful. Also, though not mole', the beans also have a lot of flavor that nicely compliment the eggs, they seem to asking to be mixed together.   The salad is OK, it's not fancy but the lettuce and tomato are fresh and crisp.   The meat itself seems a bit on the tougher/chewy side, but not TOO tough, and has its own set of accompanying spices / flavors.   The pupusas themselves have a resilience yet tear-ability that reminds me of some kinds of gingerbread.   *Turns out that the beans and beef DO go well together, as do the eggs. Nice.   Although I'm gluten intolerant, I "took one for the team" by trying the pupusas for the purposes of this review, since after all, this IS a pupuseria. I'll deal with the gut pains and irritability later, and am happy to report that those without gluten problems should find the pupusas delicious. I put my plantains on my second one for a kind of dessert "grand finale", which worked well with the hot chocolate  (they also have "real" dessert, but I'm on an ice cream fast till I pay off all my debt).   Overall, I recommend this place if you're in the area, not in a huge hurry, and looking for pupusas, cheap eats, and breakfast all day.   I'm happy to report that I experienced none of the problems with service reported by other Yelpers. Perhaps they were/are due to some other server I didn't encounter. Thus four stars for what it is.    One minor (major) environmental quibble : the hot chocolate was served to me in a Styrofoam cup, which is nice for impromptu to-go purposes, BUT bad for the environment. I hope in the future they switch to a paper cup w/holder or some other renewable to-go option. As I was hungry and have polished off every scrap of food, I can't comment on the to-go food containers.    The other thing that got me a little bit, was the providing of a straw with every drink, which might seem a nice courtesy, and is certainly intended as same, but in actual practice creates a lot of unnecessary waste, due to #1: the plastic of the straws themselves not usually being of a recyclable variety, #2: not every customer necessarily desiring to use a straw for every drink, or at all, and #3: due to the paper wrapper not being a barrier against germs IF it gets wet, and also due to #2 above, a carefully placed aside unopened straw may or may not be usable by another party, and if wet will likely have to be discarded without actually being used.   These straw-problems are certainly not confined alone to this establishment, but to all of the thousands of  establishments that engage in this practice with these kinds of straws. Thus, I hope that by leaving variations of the above comment on each of my reviews of them, I may, in a small way, help bring about positive change in a few of them. P. S. I'm slightly conflicted here. I had their pupusa which was good. Not the best that I've had but not the worst either. I noticed they also had a type I haven't seen often which is great for a pupusa-lover like myself. Unfortunately my memory of this place is scared by my friend's order. She ordered the deal they had posted in the window of buy one burger get another for $.99. Fortunately the waitress, who was kind I might add, explained that the 2nd burger was smaller than the first. Still the expectation the ad produced compared to getting a slider was a bit deflating. Another complaint I would have is the plastic on the covers felt sticky and dirty which doesn't help a place feel clean but other than that the place seemed okay. I am completely white pale skinned honky, but I have had some really good pupusas before and this place is bomb. I got the combo meat pupusa, very good, and the steak sopes, two large steak sopes for $5 loaded with meat. One is enough for lunch but this bad boy comes with two for five dollars.
