While visiting Asheville my wife and I got a hankering for some good Mexican-style food. We looked at the ample options in the town and settled on Salsa's- it's been there a long time and locals called it a "stand-by". We were kinda blown away. The food and flavors were so fresh, vibrant, and complex. Staples like enchiladas and more interesting dishes from Central America/ Cuba made for some hard choices. The fresh citrus margaritas were delicious and deceptively strong. There may be newer, cheaper, or easier options in town, but don't shy away from this place. One thing to note- the dining room is tiny. We were kinda close to folks during Covid... but they can't help that. Service was friendly and prompt. read more

Spending the weekend in the Asheville area, and heard so much about this place, I figured I would take my friend there for her birthday... We went in for a late lunch / early dinner... Be warned... Very small place... But absolutely worth waiting for a table to open (they do not take reservations)! Got the pork Pom Pom Pom and loved it! The menu was so overwhelming that I didn't know what to order but ended up getting the Pom with no rice and extra veggies. Slow braised pork was soooo flavorful and tender. So flavorful w the pineapple chutney, curry sauce I could not taste at all, kale and veggies added a nice crunch. It was huge and can definitely be shared. You can adjust anything bc everything is made to order!! Super nice about it too:) Friend got quesadilla which he enjoyed and other got the "ultimate" stone lava bowl one. This dish has a broth and super flavorful too. If you like broth, go for this! If you dont like me, get the Pom! Also split the chips w guacamole and it was so good. Chips are drizzled w a "mojo" sauce which is apparently cilantro garlic and olive oil.. Amazing!! Unique food! If I could give it less than 1 star I would. First and foremost had a 630 reservation. They told us to wait. We got seated at 745. My food was over seasoned and oily. Terrible service and incredibly rude waiter. He was pushy with us about ordering. We we asked for water. He brought us 5 water bottles for 10 people. 12 ounce bottles. They are market price ! Who does market price water ? Food sucked, worst food I have ever had in North Carolina. Still in the toilet. Been coming up here for years and I think that I would rather eat my own asshole than go here again. Also watched the owners sun leave with half empty bottles of booze. Very clearly a terribly run restaurant. Go anywhere else. read more

The menu had some great dishes listed, it made it tough to decide. The flavor was better than I expected though. The restaurant is a little limited in space with around 10-14 tables total, but there wasn't a wait on Monday night around dinner time. I started with the chips and salsa, which had a pesto drizzled over the chips. Sad to report that the chips were stale. Not just one, but the whole batch (yes, I kept eating them just to check too). The salsa was fine, but nothing out of the ordinary. Now, for the star of the show: the pom pom pom! Their most popular one is the slow roasted pork. Basically what the dish is comprised of sautéed/roasted vegetables, rice, beans, chunks of avocado, and some sauce which I couldn't identify. It comes in this large wooden container. It's only halfway deep so it's not the full container size, which is still more than enough. You can mix all the ingredients together and man, did it ignite my umami taste sensory system. Like a homecooked meal after living on your own for years, I happily scarfed down the whole dish. All my favorite vegetables combined with the tender pork were a match made in heaven. Terrible service and bad food. Made a reservation for 6:30 and we weren't seated until 7:30. It took forever for them to take our order, and water was a "market price". The food was worth it all. It is definitely on the expensive side, but you get your moneys worth. We came out here for a small vacation and had heard good reviews about this place. We have it a try and we're shocked with how yummy everything looked! The vegan fajitas were so filling and delicious. On behalf of coming here, we had small talk with a couple while waiting in line. After we got the bill, we were told that they paid for our entire dinner/drinks which was such a blessing. I would definitely come back here for a nice date night. read more

The ONLY reason I'm putting a 4 star is because the out door seating situation isn't the best. It's limited and I imagine there are usually lines- but not when I went! Service was wonderful. Tall Beautiful waitress with a hundred braids in her hair- I wish I could remember her name, anyway she was so sweet. It was BUSY when we went and she handled her crazy day with such poise. I hope you get blessed with her energy as your server. I didn't see it in the menu but ASK FOR THE POMEGRANATE ICED TEA! my friend who I came to visit ordered it because he's lived in Asheville for so long it's just the usual to him. I ordered the EL Salvadorian style plate. It was not an easy decision because the menu is packed with amazing options. I don't even know where to begin with this plate. There's so many complementing flavors. I've never tasted beans like this before, and there is this sauce that is an identifiable I want to go back one more time and order this just to taste it again before I leave. I loved the pupusa placed on the bottom. If you don't like yours a bit wet maybe ask for it in the side. I'm not a huge fan of chicken breast. Stopped in for dinner with friends. We started with chips and a trio of salsa the smoked tomato, pineapple and Ranchero. The pineapple salsa was a table favorite. Pretty tasty. Came here during the weekend the American idol parade was running through town. It was super crowded. However the service was great and got seated right away. Everyone was friendly and food was delicious although abundant. It seemed almost like you could share the plates because they were so big. I had to take my left overs. As a local this is our go to place for fun Mexican/Caribbean food. Plates are very generous and always great! I have my Salsa's Burrito and my hubby gets something different every time and is never disappointed. Now that Covid has hit we support by getting take out. I didn't think it would be as good but boy was I wrong! At peak hours they are busy so be patient OR go in the off hours when things are a little more calm. read more

Wowie! I'm upset that my boyfriend and I only discovered this place on our last day in Asheville. The food is fantastically fresh and the staff was super pleasant. I got the pom pom pom with slow roasted pork and it was to die for. The servings were huge and the bill wasn't! We started with smoked tomato salsa and chips. The chips had a green garlic drizzle that I wish I could buy and put on everything. The smoked tomato salsa was garlicky and not too spicy. My boyfriend had the salmon and shrimp burrito. What a fun, delicious, cozy spot in downtown Asheville! It was busy on a Saturday night so we went to the brewery in the basement next door while we waited for a table. After we got seated, we entrusted our waiter to put in an order for us. He selected a handful of apps and the paella for the table. The food was so great! The stuffed peppers and paella were my favorites! The fancy and flavorful drinks perfectly complemented the meal! The atmosphere was so lively and fun on a Saturday night! We came here for lunch around 2pm, so it wasn't very busy, but it gets busy at peak dining times. We got a table right away - we sat outside in the little alley, trying to stay away from people because we're still in the middle of a pandemic. The service was fast and friendly. My husband and I shared the three salsas plate, plantains and the seafood paella. The food was very yummy and the portions generous. The lobster, scallops and shrimp in the paella were so tender and delicious, I just wish they would have given us more pieces of seafood. The prices are good for what you get. We decided to eat here after walking by it the day before and it was a great decision - would highly recommend eating here! Stroller Status: We didn't go inside, so I can't speak to that. The food was honestly gross, it was overly spicy where our Latin friend was sweating so much that he couldn't even finish his food. We came here for drinks based on the recommendation of our Airbnb host. We walked in and there was already a line at 5:45. My fiancé got the perfect margarita and I got the pineapple margarita. Both were really great, tasty AND strong. Because we had already eaten dinner, we just got some chips and salad to accompany our drinks which was very good. This is a foodie's take on Mexican food. It's not typical at all, not what you expect and frankly, it was challenging for me and my two teen daughters to find something that sounded appetizing. If you like unique foods and flavors combined in new ways, you may like this. We didn't. That said, after eating a meal at Salsa's my instinct is to go and hug the cooks. It's that good. The mix of Caribbean and Mexican cuisine is a natural one, with lots of surprising spices and fruits showing up in unexpected and tasty combinations. We brought a party of 16 here. They were great about accommodating us without much difficulty. It is a small place but the food is flavorful and delicious!! Even my puertorican mother enjoyed her pom Pom Pom very much! It was freaking delicious. I had the pork one and there were many layers of amazing flavors. Jason, our waiter, was so attentive and gave us the perfect recommendations based on our tastes and preferences. The food was hot and fresh and the drinks were fantastic. When we went back inside and asked to speak to the manager, he was SO rude to my mother. He proceeded to tell her "you don't know how we do things here! How do YOU know the other groups didn't have reservations??" We knew they didn't because they told us. Excellent experience! We ordered Crab Spliff Rolls as appetizer and I had the carnitas Roasted Pork Molcajete as main course. Everything tasted great! I think they are not currently taking reservations except for big groups, (maybe that is temporary, not sure) so you will need to arrive early because it gets crowded. We only had to wait like 30 minutes, which was very acceptable waiting time, considering the restaurant was very busy. I would definitely come back here If I am near Asheville, NC again. read more

My second time here the the hubby. He had the roasted pork Pom Pom. The pork it self was delicious, very tender and tasty. There was a little plantains and guacamole at the bottom which was also tasty. The rice & berms were good. I just didn't like the lettuce at the bottom. We put in a pickup order for 2 burritos and chips/guac totaling ~$47 and walked in the recommended 20 mins later. The server could not find the order ticket, told me the kitchen is making my order, but that it will be another 30 min wait, and could not admit she never submitted the ticket to begin with. We waited 53 minutes for the order. When we got back to the hotel room, we opened the box and received 2 regular tacos and a tub of queso (with no chips). After calling into the restaurant, we spoke with the manager, Tim (maybe Tom?), who was reluctant to give us a refund. Our original order was almost 3x the price of the food we received. Tim/Tom assured us we will get a refund, then put the phone down, and we listened to him make fun of us on the phone to his coworkers not realizing he was not on mute. It has been over a week and still no refund. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. The taco we had was delicious though. read more
