Amazing food in the heart of Downtown Asheville. My lamb molcajete dish was so rich and full of flavor. The lamb was tender and not gamey. The price is very fair when you consider the huge amount of food served. Everything from the margaritas to the appetizers to the entrees are absolutely delicious. Service was okay food was not great especially for the price. But even if it was 1/2 the price I won't return. There are too many good restaurants in the area to go here. We had the plantain and yucca appetizer with guacamole. It might have had a tablespoon of guacamole, the plants were cold, yucca was good. This was the best part of the meal. I had a trio fajita (chicken, lamb,beef) the beef was charcoaled and extremely dry. Chicken and lamb were okay as were the sides. Some at table ordered tacos and the said they were no better than local Mexican restaurant. A couple ordered a curried shrimp dish and they rated it a 2. My advice find another place to eat. Incredible food, incredible service, fun atmosphere! If we were in Asheville the next night, we would have come here again! There were so many delicious looking options on the menu. We ordered the nachos as an appetizer, and they were huge! After that, we knew we had to split an entree. We ordered off of the specials menu. Our waiter was extremely friendly and welcoming. Ate here on a Saturday night at the recommendation of our Airbnb host. When we arrived it was packed but they sat us rather quickly. Small restaurant, with tables pretty close to each other. Our waiter was busy but she did a good job taking care of us. We ordered margaritas which were excellent. As my entree, I has the vegetable plate which was amazing. I just think you need to update your website and yelp hours if you aren't going to stick to them, or at least clarify "last table sat at..." or "kitchen closes at..". Saturday night closing time is supposedly 9:30, arrived at 8:38 to the "yes we're open sign" only to wait 5 minutes at the hostess stand for someone to notice me and my party standing there, walk over and without acknowledging us flip the sign to closed. 50 minutes before closing time felt like more than enough time to be seated, but to each their own. Food was just ok. I've been here previously and the paella was amazing. This time I got the fish tacos they were meh. I was told the fish would be mahi mahi - it was overcooked tilapia. Also I didn't get to choose the salsas or the way my fish would be cooked (fried,blackened or grilled) as described on the menu. Our experience here was just not good, there was a line outside the door since they were not seating until several minutes after 5 o'clock. We started off with a round of drinks, the margarita for me and the mango mojito for my husband. I also tried the sangria, the drinks were just okay. For food we started off with 3 salsas, the cactus corn, guacamole and pico de gallo, followed by the Jamaican lamb empanadas for my husband and the steak & s.c. shrimp enchiladas for me. Another restaurant in Asheville that you do not want to miss! We got here right when it opened on Sunday morning and it did not disappoint. Our server was kind and attentive and found a way to work around our very specific needs. We started out with the El Nacho Libre (Chicken). I liked that it was topped with cucumber and had a variety of hidden vegetables all throughout the nachos such as zucchini and carrots. To my surprise, there was a limited amount of chicken but I can't complain due to the fact that there was so much flavor to the dish. Out of the three main dishes that we ordered, I absolutely loved the Steak Pom Pom Poms. I've never seen anything like this before. All of the food came in layers which I found to be really interesting. It seemed to be really intricate and prepared in a traditional bowl. This dish could definitely be shared amongst two people (or more!). I ordered The Mountain and my brother ordered The Asheville (without the tortilla). He added the melted cheese and chili sauce ($1) on top of his burrito and it turned out amazing. It wasn't as flavorful as the Pom Pom Poms, but we still enjoyed our food. read more

My wife and I are avid Spanish/Caribbean food lovers so we take every change we get to eat at an authentic restaurant. We came in for dinner as a group of six and had a wait of about 25 minutes. We were served by Maité who was so charismatic and happy. Their menu is very extensive and is mostly Mexican. My wife and I ordered the Cuban Paella and the Seafood Paella, however none of these were authentic Paellas, but rather a modified version with rice and beans, pico de gallo and guacamole. While they opened 15 minutes late I cannot hold that against them. Once opened we were seated promptly in a nice window seat. Our server, Meagan, was excellent throughout the meal. Our drinks came quickly, Patron Margharitas and we started with some chips and the Smoked Salsa. I've seen complaints that the chips aren't free, but the array of salsa's you can choose from more than make up for this. Also, you do pay for your bottled water. We noted it was the same water as used by Modesto (an excellent Italian restaurant). Our mistake was each ordering an entree. These plates are huge! My wife had a chicken enchilada that she said was prepared perfectly. I had the Trifecta Fajita plate. The meat was tender, juicy and hot. We could have shared either plate and been full! This place is not large, reservations may be helpful. Once the initial line was seated there was a wait at the door for additional guests that seemed to go fairly fast. Complex flavors in all the dishes and an excellent trained staff make this a great stop for food. read more

What a fantastic experience! Each item we ordered we loved. We started out with a salsa sampler ($14) with Pico De Gallo, Holy Guacamole, and Mango-Poppy Seed. We enjoyed all of them - and the Mango had a little kick to it. For entrees, my bride went all out with the Lava Bowl Rock Molcajestes with Salmon ($23) - she asked for no shrimp. It was delectable and really a unique dish. Comes out piping hot.....so you will need to take your time to enjoy this one. I went with the Pom, Pom, Pom's with Rico Roasted Pork ($18) and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. Our server recommended Hector's Smokin Haberno on a side plate as a dipping sauce and it really enhanced the pork. This place isn't for everyone as it can be a tight setting and may be a chilly (or warm) since it's small venue and the door is open constantly with people coming/entering. With that said, our server James was excellent. He was so warm and inviting and gave a detailed overview of the items and was so cognizant to ensure we were enjoying our meals. If you like the ordinary....this isn't for you. After sitting for a while, our server approached our table and said "do you have any questions about our menu?".... not a strong start. As someone with many food allergies, I always take the time to look over the menu to make sure everything is good. I ordered the gypsy paella which was described as "saffron risotto, mushoroom, artichoke heart, plantain, black bean, avocado". There was no mushrooms on the plate, but there was also many ingredients on the plate that was not listed. The plate did have carrots and celery all over it which I am very allergic to. There was also plantains on the plate when I asked specifically for them to be removed. I had to get another servers help with my meal because our server disappeared. When the server came over to put our appetizer in a box (since the appetizer came out 5 minutes before our entrees) he asked my friend if he could use the knife she was using to eat to scoop the food into the box... gross. One of my coworkers RAVED about Salsa's and every time she's in Asheville makes a point to stop there, so we had to try it and I'm so happy we did! We had one of the best meals. Everything was so flavorful (I truly cannot understand any of the reviews that say the food was lacking flavor). We shared the fire roasted tomato salsa (THE BEST SALSA I've ever had - store bought will never compare) and chips. The server recommended the cubano papusa, (slow roasted pork, cheese, roasted vegetables, rice & beans, plantains, pico de gallo, chipotle aioli) and it was phenomenal. For the price, you get a heaping pile of food that I couldn't finish and had to take home! I have an allergy to garlic and they have never hesitated to make accommodations. My office is in Asheville but I live in Ohio. This is a small fun little restaurant in the heart of downtown Asheville. My husband saw it as we were exploring and suggested we stop in for dinner. We were seated right away and our waitress was very helpful in helping us choose cocktails. I had the Presidente margarita and my husband had the ginger mojito. Both were very good. We were intrigued by the eclectic menu and with our waitress's guidance I chose a dish from the special menu ( I can't remember the name, but the dish was unforgettable ) that had fish, shrimp and mussels cooked in half a pineapple. It was delicious. My husband chose curried goat and it was delicious as well! The accompanying beans and rice were excellent. The portions were huge and everything was fresh and made to order. My wife and I are in town for our anniversary. We walked around downtown for a little while and chose Salsa's for dinner. You would think that a place called Salsa's would have a variety of salsa. Nope...none. For drinks - expensive...a can of Diet Coke was $3! Their homemade limeade was $4 for a small glass! We ordered shrimp ceviche for a "starter". DELICIOUS! ($16) The chips that came with the ceviche were VERY hard-crunchy. I ordered the shredded steak plate ($24) and my wife ordered the jerk chicken plate ($25). There was so much different stuff on my plate I said to my wife , "I hope everything on this plate is edible." Both dishes tasted good but all the food was lukewarm which was very disappointing. To make up to us our waitress brought us out a plate of plantains and yucca. Honestly, this place was too expensive and hipster for us. I'm sure this is other people's type of place but not for us. Drove up in the morning and wanted to grab a good lunch before heading out to brewery hop. I highly recommend this place, our server Tom was really knowledgeable and personable. Everything is locally sourced which makes you feel full without a heavy feeling and it was all so flavorful. My boyfriend got the Paisa and I got the chicken tacos. I really recommend both. The cucumber jalapeño marg was one of my favorite margaritas I've had to date, very refreshing. The papaya marg was good too, just a little sweet for me.
